Hi, I’d like to report a serious issue with my 2018 Toyota Sienna related to the recent fuel system recall. Since the repair, the vehicle has leaked all of its gasoline not once, but three separate times. One of those times, my family was inside the vehicle, and the smell of gas was overwhelming. The car wouldn’t start, and it was clearly an unsafe situation. Now the dealership is charging me $1,400 to replace the fuel pressure hose and clamp, which, after thorough research and review, appears to be directly related to the process they followed when replacing the recalled fuel pump. I’ve also tried contacting the service manager, but I haven’t received a call back. That’s why I’m now requesting that Toyota open a formal case to investigate this properly. I believe this repair should be covered, and I’m asking for support from Toyota directly.

There are no messages/warnings. The vehicle will surge at very low speeds such as when I am coming to a stop, trying to avoid a person in a parking lot etc. It was so scary this evening as I accelerated into a very very busy intersection. . . I pressed on my brakes harder and it was instant - but about 1 second (which is a lot in this scenario) later it then slowed instead of accelerated. I have owned the vehicle almost a year. I will be bringing in for inspection this week and let the dealer know. I have put on about 11k in miles and would say this has happened a dozen times thus far with this evening being the scariest one yet. I figured it was just something normal for a hybrid but as I researched online - many people have this issue. Too scary for me and dont want to hurt anyone or myself.

Persistent smell of gas in cabin, took into Toyota dealership to assess issue. Service department could not resolve/locate the issue.
Was driving on highway at 60-65 mph. The car continued to accelerate. Pressed on brake and wasn't slowing the vehicle. The driver was weaving in and out of cars as the van started to creek up to 92 mph. The driver and passengers thought they were going to crash and possible die. The driver tried the brake multiple times and nothing. The driver said the accelerator pedal wasn't pressed all the way down to the floor. It was half way and driver had to go down and pull up on the pedal while driving. The van then started to slow and driver was able to pull over to have the van evaluated . The throttle body was reached and cleaned of carbon because it said that this may have been part of the issue. Never has this van taken off like this. The throttle body cable wasnt loose or disconnected either. So far we havent been able to recreate but 3 people could have been killed.

October of 2024 my van stalled while I was driving. The van was towed to an auto shop. The shop suspected a battery & alternator so replaced it. Later that same week I filled my tank at delta sonic and immediately proceeded to the car wash. My van stalled in the car wash. Once I was pushed out I had it towed again. I drove it for a few weeks and filled up the tank at delta sonic but this time the van didn’t start at all. Towed the van again. Shop thinks my issue is resolved- did a complete check of everything & returned my van to me. A week or so goes by and I filled my tank late at night and it wouldn’t start after fill up. A tow was not available. Scared and frustrated I called multiple people for help. Two hours pass, before I try to start the van again. It starts. Now I am starting to correlate a fuel fill up with my van not starting after re-fueling. My safety and my grandchild’s safety was jeopardized when my van stalled while driving in an extremely busy roadway. The next time, multiple people had to push me out of the car wash and the last time I was forced to sit at gas pumps waiting for help. I stop filling my tank to full and take the van to Toyota. They confirmed the fuel pump was the issue and fixed it.

When engaging the cruise control, the vehicle continued to accelerate even after I let off the button. During a trip with this vehicle on September 14, 2024, this vehicle did this twice. I have never driven another vehicle where this occurs. If this is supposed to be a "feature", it's unsafe and should not be legal. If it remains legal, there should at least be some kind of safety sticker.

Check engine light came on - taken to dealer, diagnosed following 2 codes : p24517f and p14502a both of these codes are known problems to Toyota, and as such a service buliten for the evap emission system switch valve has been issued per NHTSA. This problem should be a recall, not a known service issue - it is obviously a common problem with Toyota in the hybrid engines.
There has been several incidents when I step on the brakes and the vehicle seems to accelerate forward after what feels like an attempt to find the right gear when decelerating. This occurs infrequently but usually when decelerating along with an external factor. I was able to consistently replicate when I’m coming off the highway onto a service road then have to make quick turn at a corner. It feels as if the vehicle is trying to search for a gear and once it finds it there’s a momentarily acceleration forward.
For about five months now, when we completely fill our gas tank (2017 Toyota Sienna) even to the point of overflowing bit, the dashboard fuel indicator red arrow no longer goes all the way over to the right and the "distance until empty" mileage is much less than what it should be (ie 306 miles vs approx 440 miles). We have tried the resets, which don't work. We only use good-grade gasoline.
There is an evap emission leak and the p0456 error states the gas cap is faulty. I had it replaced and replaced again. So I am waiting for another brand new gas cap-3rd brand new one. So 4th overall for this van. A smoke test was done and there is no leaks per the test. So if this continues after the brand new gas cap, then there should be a recall as the gas cap is an issue. Started to happen after 95,000 miles. The awd is shut off and goes to 2 wheel drive, traction control is turned off, check engine light comes on and message check awd system comes up on the screen. Any recommendations.

About 25% of the time when I come to a stop and I am breaking, the car surges forward slightly. At first, I thought it was the way I was driving or the fact that it is an ev vehicle, which I had not driven before, but overtime it seems it is just the way the car operates. Others in the car have felt it happen as well as I have come to a stop sign or stoplight. I have not bumped into another car or anything but feel that that could happen if this is not corrected.
Our 2022 Toyota Sienna would not start after arriving at a doctor’s appointment. Contacted active Toyotacare for towing - no one showed up. Called a friend to jump start van; consulted the owners’ manual and performed jump. Van started but could only be driven about 100 yds in parking lot. Van stopped; multiple error codes showed up when trying to jump start again. Toyotacare didn’t call again or show up so we ended up paying for tow service to the dealership - haley Toyota of richmond. Dealership checked vehicle; concluded the battery had an internal weld problem but that the jump start was not performed properly even though the manual was followed. There are no jump start instructions in the engine compartment. We were given a tech bulletin instruction sheet with more accurate information. We were advised the engine control unit was burned out, causing all the error codes and would not be covered under warranty because “we” did not perform the jump start correctly. The cost of repair is almost $1100. 00 but the battery, which started all the issues, is covered under warranty. The tech instruction sheet indicates to me that Toyota was aware of the inadequate jump start instructions and failed to inform customers of the possible issues. The tech instruction sheet we were given is dated April 6, 2022 - one month before we purchased the vehicle. The sheet lists all Toyota hybrid models as affected.
While traveling at a high speed, van's power train jerked hard and rapidly slowed on its own, not allowing me to excelerate. Almost rear ended by following vehicle that managed to swerve around to avoid my rapid deceleration. Check engine light came on and was hard to start. Had to allow the van to sit a while before I was able to start. Van acted like it was in limp mode. This malfunction has occurred several times. Mechanic code shows p0087 fault code. Low fuel pressure. Toyota has recalled many of these vehicles in this year for this issue, but mine seems to not be one of them. Very dangerous.
Over the past 18 months, this vehicle has exhibited the following actions approximately 30-40 times. When slowing the vehicle, with brake pressure applied, the vehicle reacts appropriately until, at the slow speed( approximately 5-10 mph) it suddenly accelerates or surges ahead for approximately 1-2 seconds. The has occurred while in the process of turning as well as moving straight ahead. I have taken the vehicle to the dealer of the original sale, shepard's Toyota, thomaston maine, and they have attempted to replicate this action. They were unable to do so. The reported to me that they contacted Toyota engineering and was told, I paraphrase, that when the drive battery is fully charged and the dynamic braking system is still creating a charge, the current is directed to the drive motors, despite the fact that the brake is applied to slow and stop the vehicle. These events have occurred inn the middle of turns, when attempting to stop at crosswalks, and stopping prior to entering a traffic stream. If I had not continued to apply the brake, the vehicle would have, in several case, collided with objects.
Today 4/7/23 my 2017 Toyota Sienna accelerated on its own. I was driving my 4 children to school and we were at a stop light. When I took my foot of the brake to start making a turn the car gunned it around the corner. It scared everyone in the car half to death. Thankfully no one was hurt but it looks like others on here haven't been so lucky with this issue. I hope Toyota does the right thing a d fixes this issue before more people die.
The 2gr-fe engine on my Sienna has experienced a front timing cover leak. It's slowly leaking oil out of my vehicle and I'm afraid it will get worst over time. My vehicle has less than 100k miles and if the leak persists, I down want my vehicle breaking down and leaving me stranded.

The fuel line under the intake ruptured when I started my car on 2/21/23. The repair shop said they had never seen one fail like this. I do not have the parts. I was fortunate to be at home and that the engine wasn't hot when this happened so there was no fire. I had an issue starting the car ~ 1 month before that, but I don't know if the issue was fuel related. The car had been sitting for 1 week prior to that issue.
On a warm day after driving the van about 15 minutes then stop for 15 minutes or more. It is taking longer than usual to crank the van. I have search around online. It seems like a common problem Sienna's fuel pump. . Read more...
The van has been periodically hesitating, rough idles, and when parked the rpm revs. On 9/13/22, the van was shaking, hesitating, and would not accelerate. It was undrivable and had to be towed. We took it to Toyota of irving where they charged us $725 to flush the gas and clean the fuel injection system. Despite this, it is still hard idling and hesitating.

Fule & oil change signs.
Car stalled, sputtered and died. At first, I thought I was out of gas. After several tries, the car started and went 3 miles to gas station. After getting gas, the car wouldn’t start several times and that same day the check engine light came on. We took it to autozone to check the code and they said it was showing fuel pump failure. Today I’m taking it in to the dealer for service. It has started and run twice since the initial episode.
I my Sienna had its 12 volt battery depleted over night with no reason. After it was jump started, literally every single piece of equipment was malfunctioning and producing an alert (hybrid system, brake pressure, rcta, bsm, awd, tire pressure and so on). After several restarts of the engine (about 15 min after running engine), all systems went to normal except hybrid drive system, that still asked for maintenance and the tire pressure sensor was still on alert. However I drove the vehicle to a dealership in maine after the parking brake finally decided to get loose again. These guys told me, they had just the same problem with another 2022 Sienna a week before. However, they reseted the errors, and everything worked fine. They had no explanation why two Sienna in one week come to their lot with a depleted battery and as a consequence with a malfunctioning hybrid systen. That's very unsatisfying.
The fuel pump has an issue leading to a check engine light and compromised engine performance. It has been inspected by an independent service center.
Safety issue: can't open gas door, can't open sliding door gas door cover on the driver's side will not completely latch (faulty hinge issue? ) which prevents the sliding door from opening. Sliding door has issues in moving back and forth. Apparently there was a recall for this issue and I was never notified. When I researched the issue, I found that there was a recall but because my recall is just out of the 10 year time frame, Toyota states they won't pay for the repair of the faulty mechanism and that I have to pay for it out of pocket. Considering there has been a pandemic for the since March 2020, it's hard to believe that they wouldn't honor the repair when I called about it in December. I made a phone complaint to Toyota at the end of December 2021 and no one has returned my call.

When accelerating, both from a stop and/or at speed, there is a definite hesitation. When gas pedal is pressed down, there is a noticeable pause before acceleration begins. This causes safety issues especially when accelerating to merge with moving traffic. Have owned this van since oct 2021, and it has always been an issue. Possible fuel filter problem. Have not reported issue to dealer. Currently under extended warranty.
On 10/14/2021, as my wife was pulling into our attached garage, the vehicle suddenly accelerated, hitting a metal storage shelf located at the back wall of the garage. The impact of the crash caused the vehicle and the shelf to extensively damage the dry wall of that area of the garage, as well as to damage the pedestal supporting the house water heater, which resulted in the water heater detaching away from the wall and being destroyed. There was, of course, also major damage to the front bumper area of the vehicle. It is my contention that the cause of the accident lies in some component of the vehicle acceleration system. I believe this to be true because of two prior incidents which occurred within the month before this happened. On 09/16/2021, I was driving this vehicle and wanted to make a u-turn. I was traveling at approximately 10 mph, but as I began the turn, suddenly, the vehicle accelerated to about 25 mph, even though my foot was off the accelerator. My wife and granddaughter were in the vehicle at the time and both expressed alarm, somehow thinking I had purposely made this maneuver, which I assured them that I had not. Then, approximately 7-10 days later (I am unsure of the date), I was driving, alone, in this vehicle and went to make a left-hand turn. The vehicle again accelerated, even though I had removed my foot from the accelerator pedal and was applying the brakes. I estimate that as I began the turn, my speed was 10-15 mph, but the vehicle accelerated to 25-30 mph. I dismissed both of these prior incidents as not too important and attributed them to some unknown anomaly on the road. However, after the latest incident involving the damage to my garage and vehicle, research showed that several Toyota models and specifically the Sienna have had similar issues in the past. I am reporting this incident to Toyota for their evaluation, but wanted to make your agency aware, also.

On June 3, 2021 I experienced a drastic loss in power and all warning light illuminated on the dash , was able to get of the highway to a safe area and vehicle ceased to function . This happened after the fuel pump recall was performed at ed morse Toyota in delray beach around February. It had been functioning perfectly up until this massive failure. When tow truck operator arrived and tried to start, is caught fire and was severely damaged.
Vehicle began running harshly, then stalled. Check engine light came on. Upon inspection at Toyota dealership, found to have leaked fuel into charcoal canister. Vehicle owner does not overfill gas tank.
Drivers side seat belt broke and was replaced. Fuel sensor not replaced causes vehicle to hesitate at times at freeway speed.
Mobility works sold me a car, that had a recall, designed for special needs, they knew avout it plus the ramp wasnt working properly, made me pay for an expensive warranty that doesnt cover the problem that already has, they are blaming me for misuse I got it 4 months ago my son doesnt weight more than 100 pounds.
I was driving from toronto to virginia on 23 Dec 2020 and refilled gas in springfield NY walmart gas station to refill the gas. When I entered bedford PA turnpike, the car sounded with different sounds from engine on the ramp when entering the 70/76 freeway. When entered to virginia from maryland border after potomac river crossing on highway 15 , the car suddenly stopped while driving at 30 mph and pulled the car to the side of the road slowly and when I restarted the car, it started normal and drove till chantilly virginia without any stopping. But the engine gave me different noises.
