When pressing the brake the engine revs suddenly and to very high rpms and you have to press down on the brake and/or throw car into neutral/drive and then eventually the issue resolves. Happened yesterday when reversing very slowly out of driveway--was pressing brake (not accelerator) and suddenly the engine got very loud and was revving up. Pressed brake hard and thru the car into park and pressed the accelerator and the engine went back to normal. Very scary. Has happened several times before and fortunately we have not run into anything and the car has not taken off at high speed.

Occasionally when from a stop or after slowing down and then accelerating rapidly, the car does not do anything and almost gets rear ended. I have told the dealer and they said it is no unusual with Toyota's. . . . . Dallas corporate says see dealer. I just quite complaining after a couple years, but was told to check with you. Most every thing else I like about Toyota. . .

Tl- the contact owns a 2018 Toyota Sienna. The contact stated that after coming to a complete stop, the vehicle hesitated without warning as the gas pedal was depressed. Upon investigation, the contact discovered NHTSA campaign number: 20v012000(fuel system, gasoline) however, the parts to do the repair were unavailable. The dealer nor the manufacturer have been notified about the failure. The contact stated that the manufacturer exceeded a reasonable amount of time for the recall repair. The failure mileage was 35,000. The VIN tool confirms that parts not available. Jo.
When the car is at idle speed, such as waiting for traffic to clear for a left turn, the car will just die without warning. It will usually restart right away, but this has nearly caused a collision. The dealership in bellevue, wa says that's a normal thing if the car isn't properly maintained. I have brought the car to that dealership for all but one of the maintenance intervals, and the only other time was for maintenance when we were in ohio. Having the throttle body cleaned is not on the routine maintenance schedule. When the car does die there are no codes or other symbols that come up on the display, other than to say that the car died.

I was driving my minivan getting in the highway when it just stop running period in the middle of the road. I could have been dead by now specially in a highway. Luckily, I was able to pull to the side very quick when car died on me. I had to pay a tow truck to take my vehicle home now Toyota does not want to fix it. Also, sliding door won't close. When pressing door button to close, door slides right back. It does not make it all the way to be able to lock the door. This happened while passenger was getting in the vehicle was we were not able to lock the door. I was parked on the street. Unfortunately, I did not take any pictures.
Our 2016 Toyota Sienna spontaneously caught fire while parked in our driveway after returning from a short drive. After pulling into our driveway and shutting off the ignition, my wife smelled smoke as she was exiting the parked vehicle. This smoke intensified and quickly accelerated becoming an engine compartment fire. She called for me & then called 911; but in the brief moments it took me to grab a fire extinguisher, the fire further intensified with sizable flames erupting out from around the hood, front grill & underneath the vehicle. I used up 2 fire extinguishers without any significant effect. I did not have any protective safety gear so after hearing several small explosions coming from under the hood & fearing more exposure to noxious fumes, I decided to abandon my attempts to extinguish the fire. The fire dept. Arrived within a few minutes and were able to put the fire out; however, the fire progressed through the initial attack and entered the passenger compartment causing severe damage to the entire vehicle (see attached photos). The Sienna is completely destroyed. Fortunately, there were no injuries. I have been made aware of multiple incidents of engine fires in Toyota Siennas in this & other closely related model years (2014-2017). See: NHTSA id number: 11010601. I can also supply you with some additional media accounts of other Toyota Sienna engine fire reports. Our Sienna was routinely maintained as per manufacturer's recommendations & was last serviced on 9/13/2019 (see attached service receipt). The vehicle had approx. 35k miles on it & exhibited no prior signs of trouble, change in performance or warning indicator lights. We did have an unresolved problem with automatic side doors not operating properly after a recall repair; however, the local Toyota dealer service dept. Could not identify a problem after multiple service complaints.

Car was recalled for fuel pump and I repaired in 8/2020 with approximately 11,190 miles. I had complained that car, since time of purchase and had 4662 miles when I insisted Toyota fix this, (hunted for gears, hesitated, lagged when accelerator pushed, and had poorer gas mileage than expected). The car now has 34,875 miles on it and is doing the same thing, hesitating, lunging between gears. Our mechanic confirmed this and stated worse when using a. C. Called Toyota customer service and they said the car was out of warranty for the pump repair, but perhaps not the power train, transmission, etc. Have not gotten back to me yet, but has not been one working day after spending 2. 5 hours on the phone with them yesterday. This is a safety issue, I press on the gas to make a turn and it lags leaving me in traffic. My 2007 Sienna, which is still running for my daughter, never did this and has full power when called upon. Toyota needs to repair the entire fuel system, transmission, if they cannot fix this. There are no warning lights when this happens & it is happening more frequently. Dealership told me they could not put another pump on car and to contact Toyota customer service and gave me the number. When we had the car for about a month, dealership said we were just not used to driving a car with this type of transmission and car was low on oil, we added oil and dealership said we used the wrong type, but we figured some oil was better than no oil. We are boomers and have been driving cars for decades, with clutches and without and we know how to drive a vehicle.
I pulled onto a highway and reaching about 25 mph the 2019 Sienna hesitated for at least 10 seconds as if it was not getting gas. I pressed the gas wanting to get out of the way of traffic and it jumped slightly but would not go. Then it kicked in with a few hesitations and took off. Another 100' or so, it did it again. Prior to this I had already brought it to Toyota complaining that there is a hesitation when the van is not warmed up yet between 20-40 mph. It is only slight, but noticeable and feels like it is not getting gas. The van does this every time after it has been sitting long enough to cool down. The long hesitation only happened twice so far (dangerous enough!), there have been a few shorter ones, and then there is the every time slight hesitation. Toyota has told me nothing shows in their diagnostics and they do not know what is wrong. They tried cutting the power to the computer to reset the memory, but this did not change anything.
When vehicle is in motion and I take my foot off the accelerator to coast to yield to oncoming traffic, but then see my way clear to accelerate into traffic and put my foot on the gas to enter the traffic flow, my vehicle stalls and won't accelerate. Where normal acceleration and "pick up" would enable me to enter traffic safely, there have been numerous occasions when I have almost been hit by other vehicles. My vehicle has been in motion on city streets or entry ramps, slowing, then attempting to join traffic when I seemed to have plenty of room to accelerate, except my vehicle has stalled. . Engine didn't quit running, just couldn't "get gas" to go. Have taken it to my local dealer twice and was told they could find nothing wrong; it was a computer "matter" trying to adjust to my driving habits. This did not seem to be a transmission linkage, there was no jerking. Vehicle just wouldn't accelerate. Happened on numerous occasions.

Interior of van was consumed with fuel vapors. Exterior front of van engine compartment also smells like a fuel leak. Problem taken to dealer and they could not find the source of leak. Van was released to me in a unsafe condition. Intermittent fuel smell became more progressive to the point the van was not able to be driven to to saftey concern of fire. Second trip to dealer they could not find source of fuel leak. Description of problem. When van was driven with or without ac fuel vapors would be noticed on the exterior of the van. This progressed to the interior while driving. I also tested the van with the engine on and both ac on/off with the van in the parked position and still notice a very strong order of fuel vapors. The van is unsafe for transportation on public roads and unsafe to drive in with my family. The problem was noticed when the van was stationary or in motion on city/highways.
Takata recall. My 2014 Toyota Sienna was in motion on the highway going a steady 75 mph. And the trac off light went on and we tried turning it off like we usually do whenever we turn it on on accident. And after a mile down the highway it started fuming intensely so we stopped at a gas station.
The vsc and tract light stay on all the time. The Ford dealer I purchased the van from said they had it fixed. I took it back and I was told to buy a new gas cap which I did from a Toyota dealer in my area. The light came on again. I took it back and was told it had an exhaust leak and it won't hurt the van. But I could bring it back for starting at $ 200. 00 and have a leak test done on the van, but it would take hours. Since then I've had cleaner run thru the system but the lights stay on all the time. Is this a safety hazard because its an exhaust leak? can you please assist in the repair information before I spend hundreds of dollars chasing the problem. Thank you so much. . . . . The top hinge of the fuel filler door broke at 82000 miles. It now does not allow the automatic sliding door on the drivers side to open because of the safety mechanism. The hinge broke when I opened the door during refueling.
Immediately after purchasing this new 2019 Toyota Sienna I became aware of the vehicle having acceleration problems while attempting to accelerate gradually in a low speed/low torque setting. This occurs at what could be described as parking lot speeds, 5 to 25 mph, primarily, although the vehicle hesitates and then lurches also at higher speeds when downshifting to gain torque in a 30-50 mph range also. This hesitation, balking, and then rapid lurching forward at low speeds has caused passengers to comment about "whiplash" and being pushed back into their seats when the vehicle does engage with unexpected forward motion. This vehicle was purchased on 2-18-2019. After driving the vehicle for a reasonable amount of time and miles I contacted our sales agent who set a service appointment for Monday Feb 25, 2019. On 2-25-2019 I drove the vehicle to the dealer's service dept with "mileage in" of 250 mi. And "mileage out" of 251. Service invoice number 784852 states that the ecu was calibrated and reset. Upon driving the vehicle it became obvious that the problems were no different and perhaps worse. On March 1, 2019 I returned the vehicle to the dealer and took the service manager and a tech-expert for a ride. The tech acknowledged the stall and lurch phenomenon and said he "has dealt with this before". The tech and the service manager told me they were opening a case with Toyota for possible input to resolve this problem. I believe this a serious potential safety issue as the forward lurching of the vehicle could result in serious injury as a result vehicle design and engineering. Other Toyota owners have discussed this problem via internet forums. It would appear to affect 2018 & 2019 Siennas with "throttle by wire" design and their 8 speed transmission.
Tl the contact owns a 2014 Toyota Sienna. While driving various speeds, the fuel door opened without warning. The vehicle was taken to mac haik Toyota (2112 gulf fwy s, league city, TX 77573, (281)-884-3744), but was not diagnosed or repaired. The failure recurred. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure and informed the contact that there were no recalls or warranties for the vehicle. The failure mileage was 73,000.
Fuel door latch hinge is broken at the top of the hinge. Possibly, it caused by the door latch safety with excessive tension. It disabled the driver side sliding door. Driver's side sliding door could not be opened and it caused exiting issue for children and occupants in the car. Car's mileage is at 27,000 miles. Fuel door opened during in motion and/or stationary.
Nov 16,2017 oil cooler pipe and lines burst on highway while driving thru no break down lane tunnel. Van all motor oil within minutes, resulting in loss of engine power. Extended service warranty from Toyota "ze2" had been given to Toyota dealers nation wide but despite dealer service done in July 2017 no mention of a problem mentioned. No notification was sent to owners of a potential problem. It created a safety issue that could have been life threatening.
Car stalls when accelerating from a stop. Happens on highway stop and go and when entering a junction after a stop sign. After the stall the car jerks as it suddenly lacks torque and goes to a lower gear. Toyota technician said that traction control shuts off fuel. This is dangerous since it leaves you stalled after going into a junction. They issued a TSB 0197-17 that didn't solve the problem and they claim that there is no problem and that it is a driving style issue.
My 2008 Toyota Sienna began to create a smoke screen impairing me from having a clear visual of the road. I had to immediately pull to the side of the freeway and check if my vehicle was on fire. Once I inspected the outside and open the hood to make sure nothing was on fire I notice a puddle of oil under the vehicle an upon further look my engine motor oil cooling hose had burst, spraying the motor and everything inside with motor oil. This was the 3rd time this vehicle has done the same problem.
Defective oil cooling hose ruptured suddenly when parked, spilling oil in grocery store parking lot and leaving the family stranded. We had to tow car to capitol Toyota in san jose. The car started leaking oil on the way to the grocery store as evidenced by a trail of oil leading up to parking lot. The car has now been at capitol Toyota since 7/17 (about 4 weeks) with no eta for new improved metal replacement hose. The service department at capitol Toyota admitted this is a design defect. Apparently the better replacement hose is on national back order, again with no eta, and so no line of sight on when the car will be fixed. In the mean time my wife has no car to drive, and Toyota refuses to supply a loaner. I have escalated this with Toyota head quarters and they also will not provide a loaner. This situation is very frustrating, as the car is at the dealer, and no timeline for when the part will come in and repair will be done. I have never experienced this sort of situation before, with the many cars I've owned in the past.
Body- at 112,000 miles, driver's side sliding door wire snapped from normal use. Inferior material and or design alleged. Fuel item charcoal canister, oil control valve, and oxygen sensor failure at 116,000 miles.

Car smelled of gas from the time I bought it (new) after it was started and it was driven for a few miles. Sitting overnight, the smell would dissipate, but the same thing happened each day -- strong gas smell after a few miles of driving . Colder weather, the smell was more pronounced. Dealer didn't see any dripping gas, so sent me home twice without repairs being done. After they kept it overnight, they smelled the smell in the morning and only then decided to call Toyota who said there has been a few problems with injector seals. It was repaired and is fine now. My daughter's friend had the same 2017 Sienna and it caught fire on the highway and exploded --- my guess is that there is a very serious issue here that needs to be addressed.
Yesterday afternoon, I was driving on a semi busy road in tucson, arizona at about 40 mph and the van suddenly began to accelerate. I immediately thought I had hit the cruise control button but the dash showed no indication that this was case. I repeatedly pushed the cruise control button and jiggled the lever arm hoping to toggle something off but it had no effect. I began to push the breaks but they were not capable of slowing the car below about 25. I threw the van into neutral and the engine revved up to about 7000 rpm. That sound concerned me so I threw it back into gear and the van began to accelerate again. I pushed the emergency breaks, and with my pedal break fully compressed I could get the car to 5-10 mph but there was absolutely no way to stop the van. After narrowly missing a pedestrian, I turned right, found a place to pull off to the side of the road, threw the van into neutral and quickly turned the van off. With the engine turned off the breaks were as effective as the should have been so the the van came to a stop. After a brief period I turned the key, started the van and, again, the engine again revved to 7000 rpm. I turned it off again. I pumped the accelerator several times before starting it again and it started up fine. I had the van towed after this and I'm not likely to drive it again.

Sometimes the car stalls upon acceleration. Then it surges forward. When driving, it will accelerate at random. Had vehicle to dealer, evans Toyota in fort wayne, in. On 12/21 & 12/23/2016. They say it's fine. I disagree. It's not right.
My car is revving uncontrollably and lurching forward when braking. The engine does not decrease its revolutions in lone with braking. Its either a transmission dropping to a lower gear and lurching forward ir the accelerator pedal us sticking. It happens all of the time and is unsafe coming to stops near croas traffic.
Loss of acceleration after braking. Vehicle will cease responding to the accelerator pedal after braking, will continue to go slowly (~20 mph) for 3-5 seconds, then accelaration will resume. Happens at any time in any situation; brakes just have to be tapped to lose acceleration, has been happening since vehicle new.
Our 2010 Toyota Sienna recently had a cel go on. No codes were found by local repair shop so took the car to Toyota dealer. Dealer gave us error code u0123, u0124, u0126 and said we would have to replace the abs actuator pump which will cost $3600+. I searched online and many have/had the same problem. Also read that Toyota has already covered a extension warranty for the camry hybrid with the same problem part. One of the code was for the yaw rate sensor which was also part of a recall on some Toyota and Lexus cars.
