The contact owns a 2019 Toyota Sienna. The contact stated that the liftgate failed to lower while using the remote. While reversing, the back-up camera became inoperable. The air bag warning light was illuminated. The vehicle was taken to the local dealer who stated the failure was due to the remote start feature that was installed. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The contact stated that she noticed the mirrors were fractured. While driving at an undisclosed speed, several unknown safety features became inoperable. There was a burning odor detected inside the vehicle. The manufacturer was contacted and offered to pay a nominal portion of the repair for the mirrors and referred her to the NHTSA hotline for assistance. The approximate failure mileage was 72,000.

In very cold weather (approximately 20 degrees or colder), the automatic tailgate on the back of the minivan malfunctions while parked. It will go up but as soon as it gets to the full open position, it comes back down and will not stop, even if you have your hand or body in the path of the tailgate door. This has happened to me numerous times over the last seven years (the last time being on the evening of 2/12/16 in bloomington IL) and the first time I barely was able to pull back before the tailgate would have crushed me. In summary, the tailgate door malfunctions in very cold weather (as it won't stay open) and it appears the sensor that detects something in the path of the tailgate door also is malfunctioning since it will not stop if something is in its path. I have submitted this to Toyota via occasional user panel email surveys they send, but I don't know if they are looking into it. This needs to be investigated before someone gets crushed, injured, or killed.

Regarding NHTSA id# 08v244000 aloha I have a 2005 Toyota Sienna which had the gas struts recall for my power tailgate which was done on 04/13/2009 work order# 656115 from servco Toyota in hawaii. However its been only 3 years and the gas struts are failing again. It seems to need a new pair every 3 years. I hope you can have Toyota recall the newly designed struts because according to Toyota they are supposed to have a longer life than the original but after reading some comments online I noticed I am not the only one who has the same problem with new struts failing again. Mahalo for your time.

The tailgate fails to stay open either immediately or randomly closes without warning. The van had the 2008 recall performed and now the replacement part has completely failed. The part number for the replacement is 04008011ae.
The rear tailgate struts suddenly failed and the tailgate fell and hit a passenger in the read cutting the head open and resulting in stitches to close a cut on the head .

Toyota safety recall for liftgate support replacement completed. Since then, liftgate does not work consistently. Works better during cooler weather. Tailgate will start to close, go halfway, then reopen fully. After 2 or 3 attempts tailgate flies open quickly and could injure someone if they were in the arc of the tailgate swing. Taken to the dealer 3 times to repair this- last time, dealer reprogrammed the tailgate motor, and told me if this continued the liftgate motor would need to be replaced for about $1000. Had no (0) problems with the liftgate prior to the safety recall, and dealer is trying to tell me the liftgate motor is going bad (and has nothing to do with replacing the liftgate struts. ) I think Toyota needs to replace the liftgate motors, as they are unable to overcome the liftgate strut pressures.
Opened tail gate on 03 Toyota Sienna van. Reached in to get something and gate suddenly came down striking me on the top of my head causing a concussion. Gas struts were replaced at a cost of over $300. Old parts not available.

The powered rear liftgate struts were replaced as part of the NHTSA recall campaign on 12/18/2008. The new struts no longer lift the tailgate to its previous height. The tailgate now opens about 2" to 3" lower than the maximum extension. The tailgate must be manually pushed to its full extension. At its lower height, it is easy to get bumped in the head as you assume the door will open fully. The dealer states that the tailgate cannot be adjusted for greater travel to open all the way.

The contact owns a 2004 Toyota Sienna. The contact stated that there were several failures with the vehicle, including the tailgate. The tailgate has been repaired four times. The failure only occurs in 32 degree weather or below. When opened, the tailgate starts closing automatically and without warning. The contact has struck his head several times. During the most recent failure, his shoulder got stuck and popped due to the tailgate closing automatically. He stated that this was a safety issue because individuals could get closed in by the tailgate. The failure persists. The current and failure mileages were 62,000.
2004 Toyota Sienna power rear lift tailgate malfunction. Tailgate lifted normally then suddenly and without warning began powered closing, striking my wife in the back. I was able to reproduce the malfunction repeatedly. The malfunction occurs constantly. The consequence should a child or elderly person be struck by the rear gate. It has not been repaired yet.
Automatic rear tailgate door sometimes closes by itself after opening, causing potential injuries to people who are leaning into the vehicle to unload the van. This happens often, mostly in the winter on cold days.
My Toyota Sienna with power lift gate has become unreliable and will initiate closure without warning or initiation. Replacing the hydraulic support struts has not corrected this problem. When I search the internet I found that this was a common complaint. It could cause injury or death if the door initiates closure when a person is not expecting it and vulnerable.
2004 Toyota Sienna opened back door dropped unexpectedly causing minor head injury and property damage.
The contact owns a 2004 Toyota Sienna. The tailgate had the same failure as noted in defect investigation # ea06020 concerning the liftgate. The only exception was that the tailgate was not power operated. When the tailgate was lifted it fell down immediately. The dealer stated that the struts failed. The current and failure mileages were 48,000. Updated 05/23/07.
The liftgate on my 2004 Toyota Sienna minivan, which is equipped with a automatic opening and closing feature, will sometimes start to close when it is in the open position. Although I reported it as one incident date per your form below, the problem really occurs intermittently throughout the winter season. The problem seems to always occur only when the temperature is below freezing. Both my wife and I have hit our head on numerous times when we are unpacking the car from the rear and the liftgate starts to close without any prompting from us. I reported the car to the dealer once and they took a look at it and could find no problems. Once again, the problem seems to be triggered by the cold weather. Toyota needs to be responsible and fix the problem before someone looses and eye or potentially gets killed by walking full speed into the closing liftgate.
