1 Car Accelerates On Its Own problem of the 2014 Toyota Tacoma

Failure Date: 01/07/2018

While in reverse, idling slowly to a stop to pick up a hot water heater, the vehicle suddenly accelerated independently. The vehicle did not respond when the brake pedal was depressed. As a result the vehicle crashed into plumbing supply warehouse, sending it through a overhead door and through expensive hot water heaters and spas, the truck continued into the warehouse until it hit an immovable object and stopped. The throttle continued to highly rev the engine and the vehicle was shifted into drive to get out of the interior of the warehouse. The vehicle crashed at high speed, into plumbing debris on the way out, through a parking lot and onto the street. Brakes did not stop the vehicle. The vehicle was was eventually shifted into neutral and the throttle eventually resumed normal engine speed operation. Next day, Toyota dealer could not the diagnose the problem, a failed throttle position sensor because, being a 2004, it did not "throw" computer failure code. Entire throttle assembly was replaced by independent garage. Mileage 62,700. Miles. Earlier in the same week, throttle stuck open temporarily while backing up at low speed, but I didn't think anything about it or realize the seriousness of a failing throttle position sensor. The truck is now operating ok after body repairs.

2 Car Accelerates On Its Own problem of the 2010 Toyota Tacoma

Failure Date: 01/02/2018

On 1/2/18 I was driving into a parking lot going slow getting ready to put my truck into reverse to back up into a spot when suddenly without warning an unintended acceleration took place. My truck would not stop accelerating forward with my right foot pressed all the way down on the brake my truck continued to rev up and jump forward with tires rubber burning due to me having my foot on break trying to stop the truck. I missed hitting a car barely and still not sure how I missed it. My foot was clearly on the brake the entire time and finally I put my truck in park and the truck came to a stop, since I was not going down a highway. I reported to Toyota and got no where. I have no floor mat in my truck so cant blame it on floor mat. They are claiming it was misapplication of pedal. This is a total lie. I would of hit that car had my foot been on wrong pedal. My foot was on the brake so hard and putting in park stopped the truck. Again could hear the engine rev as if stuck in acceleration and my tires burning rubber as I continued to engage brake and truck was jumping forward. Toyota has opened a case but again refuse to admit to any problem blaming it on misapplication of pedal. Kerry Toyota florence ky insists they did inspection but refuse to show me any results from inspection just say they inspected pedal and floor mat, which there is no floor mat. I am not convinced they ran a diagnostic on it. Toyota corporation again aware of other cases but still refuse to acknowledge a problem. I am scared now driving wondering when or if will happen again.

Independent garage diagnosed the problem as a failed throttle position sensor. Earlier in the same week, the throttle stuck open when backing up at low speed, but I didn't think anything about it or the seriousness of a failing throttle. The truck is now operating after repairs.

4 Car Accelerates On Its Own problem of the 2006 Toyota Tacoma

Failure Date: 03/27/2017

Accelerated by itself. Unintended acceleration. My wife was driving our 2006 4x4 Toyota Tacoma on a 55mph road with or 3 year old and 1 year old children on March 2017 at around 12:00 noon, when she started to decelerate to turn onto side road she depressed the brakes but they didn't work, she pressed harder and there was no change; then the truck accelerated on its own while she still only applied the brake pedal, the brakes finally worked and she was able to navigate the turn, yet much too fast. Overt the next two miles to our house on a 35mph road, she stopped the truck fine (once at a stop sign, and once at our mailbox). However, as she pulled into our garage she stepped on the brake pedal and again the brakes did not work, and the truck again accelerated on its own and hit a tool cabinet which hit the garage wall. Thankfully she and the kids were ok. The truck has a push-bar on the front and that was pushed into the front bumper and grill, the Tacoma's front bumper is concaved in the middle and the ends are broken from where the join the front fenders, the lower grill area also broke. I immediately called three different Toyota dealerships to explain what had happened and ask if there was a recall. Two claimed to never have heard of this, and one of those told me to make sure a floor mat wasn't in the way (which it wasn't). One service advisor stated that this was similar symptoms to a national recall that had been issued for other Toyota models, but not our Tacoma was not one of those. I took to the internet and instantly found thousands of similar complaints by Tacoma owners, and even verbiage that nhsta has had thousands, maybe tens of thousands, of similar complaints for this generation Tacoma. I tested the truck later in the day and it worked as it should, however it's clear that Toyota, and this Tacoma, have unintended acceleration issues.

5 Car Accelerates On Its Own problem of the 2011 Toyota Tacoma

Failure Date: 03/05/2017

I started my Tacoma in park, with my foot on the brake I put it into reverse, the engine and then started to accelerate very fast, spinning the tires, it was on asphalt with some sand. I pressed down harder on the brake to keep it in place and shifted back to park, at which point the engine rpms went back to idle. When I returned to reverse everything was behaving normally. The truck had been in my heated garage for a week, I drove it 3-4 miles in dry sunny cold weather(32), shut if off for a few minutes before this happened. In the five years I have owned the truck this is the second time something like this happened. The last time was a couple of years ago while in dive it suddenly accelerated. Both cases were quite alarming but fortunately did not result in an accident. The prior incident was reported to Toyota and NHTSA.

6 Car Accelerates On Its Own problem of the 2005 Toyota Tacoma

Failure Date: 01/26/2017

I was pulling into a parking spot in front of a building. I was going approx. 1-3 mph due to the lot being wet & had my foot on the brake. When I was almost to the concrete curb, the truck suddenly accelerated, jumped the curb and hit the building. I still had my foot on the brake & shifted into neutral. The engine was reving full throttle, so I turned off the engine. Before moving, I checked to make sure nothing was touching the accelerator, which was the case. The airbags did'nt deploy but that was because of the angle at which I hit the building. I then restarted the engine an backed off the building.

The air bags failed to deploy. A police report was not filed. There were two injuries that required medical attention. The vehicle was towed to the dealer. The contact referenced NHTSA campaign number: 13v014000 (air bags, seats). The VIN was unknown. The approximate failure mileage was 63,000. The manufacturer was not notified.

8 Car Accelerates On Its Own problem of the 2016 Toyota Tacoma

Failure Date: 03/02/2016

Car hesitates when needing to accelerate rapidly. While slowing down the car feels like it is pushing ,not down shifting fast enough. The differential bang at time when coming to a stop, it seems like it is not disengaging. I think there is a programming issue that Toyota is not admitting to. I also heard that there is a blower issue. The transmission disengages at different speeds when you go to accelerate then don't and then do. Car goes into neurtal hunting for a gear.

14 Car Accelerates On Its Own problem of the 2011 Toyota Tacoma

Failure Date: 01/06/2015

I am writing about a sudden acceleration problem I had with my 2011 4x4 Tacoma. On January 6th, I was returning from an appointment. I left the parking lot going about 10-20mph, I drove 1/10th of a mile down the access road when I went to brake at the intersection. As soon as I touched the brake the engine dramatically increased its speed and the truck started to accelerate. I immediately applied full pressure to the brake to stop the truck but the engine was still highly rev'd and I could feel the truck trying to accelerate. As soon as I shifted the transmission into neutral the engine revs went back to normal idle speed and the truck stopped trying to move forward. Other details are that the outside temperature was between 10-20f, roads were clear and dry and the truck was in 2wd. After I checked the accelerator pedal, it was free and clear of any obstruction that could have made it stick. The truck was purchased new in oct 2011 and currently had about 24k miles on it. The truck had been driven about 5 miles to the appointment, sat for about an hour before the return trip home. It was fortunate that this did not cause an accident. Being aware of the prior sudden acceleration problems in the news with Toyotas this seems to be a case where it has occurred on a 2011 model. The following week I submitted this same information to Toyota.

15 Car Accelerates On Its Own problem of the 2005 Toyota Tacoma

Failure Date: 12/20/2014

I was slowly turning into my driveway when there was a sudden acceleration of the gas pedal. My truck shot like a bullet (about 40-45 feet) into the corner of my house and deck. The force of the impact sheared a 6x6 deck corner post, knocked the garage small entry door completely loose from it's frame, and did extensive damage to a solid brick wall, as well as damage to the inside of garage. Luckily, I did still have my seat belt fastened; however, the air bag did not deploy. I filed a claim with Toyota, they sent an inspector, and now have denied that there was any malfunction. I am 100% sure that the acceleration was not "driver's error" and that there is a safety issue here and Toyota should be held accountable. The body damage to my truck has been repaired, but I will be getting rid of it. The conversations I have had with the people at Toyota's headquarters in torrance, California have certainly been most unpleasant and have left me with a very bad opinion of Toyota as a company. I will never have another of their vehicles! I just hope the next person is as lucky as I was and does not get killed or badly injured when his Toyota Tacoma accelerates for no reason!.

16 Car Accelerates On Its Own problem of the 2005 Toyota Tacoma

Failure Date: 10/25/2014

My vehicle was parked in the driveway. I started the vehicle and put the gear in drive to move it forward. As soon as I dropped it into drive, the vehicle suddenly accelerated forward with the throttle appearing to be wide open. I had my feet firmly on the brake to keep the vehicle from moving, the back wheels started to slip and "chirp" since the rear end is light. With the accelerator still wide open, I put the gear in neutral and watched as the rpm's shot over 4000. After a few seconds, the accelerator showed no signs of disengaging, so I turned the vehicle off and put the gear in park. This has happened before, so I am always ready in case it happens again. I must constantly drive with one hand on the gear shift, ready to push it into neutral at the first signs of this sudden unintended acceleration. This is the fifth time this has occurred in the past year. Toyota continues to claim there is nothing wrong with the vehicle, that I am accidently hitting the gas pedal myself.

18 Car Accelerates On Its Own problem of the 2009 Toyota Tacoma

Failure Date: 04/12/2014

Today, 04/12/14, at around 11:55 a. M. , I had my fourth experience of unintended acceleration in my 2009 Toyota Tacoma. The first two incidents I had not reported. The third incident I did report to Toyota, they examined my truck and found nothing they thought would cause the acceleration. Today, I was approaching a busy intersection during a street festival in the downtown section of my home town. My truck did not stop when I pressed the brake, but the engine revved and the tires squealed twice as I tried unsuccessfully to stop the vehicle. It carried me through the intersection - if it had been occupied, I don't know if I would have been able to steer away from pedestrians, as the street was narrow and it all happened very fast. As soon as I had control of the truck, I pulled over to check the rug. The rug was hooked into its hole, a good 3 inches from the accelerator, and could not be moved by hand. I am now afraid to drive my truck, and am grateful to god that no one was hurt or killed. I had a passenger with me who witnessed this.

20 Car Accelerates On Its Own problem of the 2005 Toyota Tacoma

Failure Date: 12/30/2013

Pulled into my driveway to park my 2005 Tacoma and all of a sudden my Tacoma accelerates forward and plunges into the rear end of my 2000 corvette which was parked in my garage, and does $1321. 22 in damage. The force from the Tacoma knocked my corvette about 3 feet forward into a freezer in the garage. I was approximately 6 feet behind the corvette, and the corvette was in gear and the emergency brake was applied, when the Tacoma suddenly accelerated forward. I have been parking in same location or 9 years and this has never occurred before. I have had all recalls done concerning the sudden acceleration problem with the Tacoma. This was not a pedal problem, it is a Toyota problem. If his had happened at a intersection who knows what may have happened. Someone needs to "fix" this problem.

22 Car Accelerates On Its Own problem of the 2005 Toyota Tacoma

Failure Date: 06/05/2013

In June 2013 I was approaching an interstate entrance ramp. As I slowed down (foot on the brake) to make the right turn onto the ramp, the vehicle suddenly accelerated, causing the rear end to "fish tail" around, jumping the curb on the right side of the ramp and sending the vehicle down the embankment. I was able to get the vehicle to stop before hitting the fence at the bottom of the hill. Since this first incident in June 2013, the vehicle has had three more incidents in June, July and August of 2014. The last incident in August occurred as I was pulling into a parking spot. Again, I was slowing down (foot on the brake) when the vehicle suddenly accelerated causing me to strike the parked vehicle in front of me. The incidents in June and July 2014 were also similar parking lot incidents with no other vehicles around. After the August 2014 incident, I started to "connect the dots" and took the vehicle to the Toyota dealership. However, they found no problem with the vehicle. I find this very strange given all of the known issues Toyota has had with sudden unintended acceleration (sua).

23 Car Accelerates On Its Own problem of the 2006 Toyota Tacoma

Failure Date: 03/04/2013

As I was rolling down hill and applying the brakes, the truck suddenly accelerated. As I pressed the brakes harder the anti-lock brakes activated and the truck continued to move forward for a short distance, almost into on coming traffic, while the engine could be heard loud as if the gas peddle was being pushed although the brakes were being applied only. Scary! uncontrollable forward movement and acceleration while braking.

31 Car Accelerates On Its Own problem of the 2011 Toyota Tacoma

Failure Date: 11/02/2011

Sudden unintended acceleration. Time was 6:55 am. I was on work property having just turned left from a light. I was 5 th car in line to make a right turn. All cars were stopped. My foot was lightly pressing break. The next thing I know, my truck was ramming the SUV in front of me. No way my foot could have touched gas pedal. . . It was a traffic jam. It's like this every morning. I contacted Toyota right away. They denied it, but sent out an eng to get black box data. I never heard from them again.

34 Car Accelerates On Its Own problem of the 2007 Toyota Tacoma

Failure Date: 08/11/2011

While on a camping trip my 2007 Toyota Tacoma suffered a sudden unintended acceleration event. While applying the brakes and coming to a stop the Tacoma suddenly accelerated and flew over two good size boulders a cast iron fire pit and came to a rest after hitting a solid concrete picnic table. A report was filed with coho campground hosts acting as to go on file with the washington state forestry department. This even occurred at the wynoochee dam and reservoir located in the pacific northwest of washington state. The truck was remanded to Toyota of olympia washington and the insurance carrier was notified. The truck was due for the well documented Toyota floor mat, gas pedal and braking acceleration override modification. Now listen carefully here. . . The floor mats were heavy duty rubber non-Toyota brand mats. They were not impeding the gas pedal in any way shape or form. The truck accelerated instantly while braking and almost at a dead stop. Review of NHTSA findings on this issue are shocking. I did not hit the accelerator by mistake, there is a huge difference in the size, feel and consistency of these two incredibly different pedals. Many children and campers were present in this campground, the sheer luck that no one was killed is a matter of fate. The fact I am writing you from my living room and not a jail cell while being held for vehicular manslaughter is a miracle. This is not driver error, you have a bunch of 4 wheel time bombs out there traversing the nations highways. With over 30 years in technical electronic systems I assure you this truck accelerated from an almost dead stop while my right foot was on the gigantic break pedal, not the little tiny gas pedal. Hear me, believe me. . . . . End of story.

35 Car Accelerates On Its Own problem of the 2007 Toyota Tacoma

Failure Date: 08/08/2011

2007 Toyota Tacoma sua (sudden unintended acceleration) my incident started from a near standstill with my right foot firmly on the brake. As a formally trained observer and troubleshooter of aircraft electronic systems, it is my opinion that this vehicle delivered uninitiated stimulus to the electronic throttle control system. I am 100% positive about this finding as I personally experienced this failure with a clear mind and excellent vantage point. I was finally able to stop this vehicle after violent and aggressive braking was applied while contacting a cement picnic table. This finally occurred just short of a 267 foot cliff/hill pointing into a reservoir. This is my second entry into the NHTSA database concerning the unintended acceleration of a 2007 Toyota Tacoma. I have now been through the entire Toyota process and have had all recalls and investigations performed. Damage from the accident due to sua has been repaired. Toyota findings were conclusive. "could not duplicate". This means they do not have to do anything at all. I have to date engaged in extensive research of this phenomenon and I am shocked as to the findings recently announced by ray lahood and nasa that exonerates electronics as a possible issue. I have been supporting, maintaining and troubleshooting electronic problems since 1980 and consider myself a credible professional technician. This was definitely an electronic ghost in the machine.
