2 Cruise Control problem of the 2020 Toyota Tacoma

Failure Date: 03/21/2021

This morning I activated my cruise control (cc)as I normally would at 55 mph. Immediately my truck began accelerating until I finally disengaged cc when the speed reached 83-85 mph. It was still accelerating at the time I disengaged it. I attempted to recreate the incident with no luck. Before the incident, I was driving in a city environment at speeds less than 55 mph, so there was no way I had previously set the cc to a high speed that would have caused this to happen had I hit resume.

3 Cruise Control problem of the 2020 Toyota Tacoma

Failure Date: 03/01/2021

System will occasionally suddenly decelerate as I am passing, usually a large truck. I will be in adaptive cruise control and as I get abreast of the trailer, the vehicle will suddenly decrease speed by 10-20 mph, then accelerate back to the set speed. This, obviously, has the potential to create a rear end collision if someone is following and not paying full attention, esp if there are multiple cars following. This has happened multiple times.

4 Cruise Control problem of the 2021 Toyota Tacoma

Failure Date: 11/01/2020

Vehicle will not hold 6th gear while in cruise control. Vehicle will suddenly down shift to 5th and sometimes 4th. This makes the vehicle surge forward abruptly.

6 Cruise Control problem of the 2018 Toyota Tacoma

Failure Date: 01/29/2020

My 2018 Tacoma had a check engine light come on, then the trac light came on. Cruise control quit working and engine runs rough. When driving, vehicle begins to lose acceleration and check engine light begins flashing. When idling, engine runs with with a miss, and when driving, at lower speeds the vehicle shudders as if its losing power.

7 Cruise Control problem of the 2019 Toyota Tacoma

Failure Date: 01/02/2020

I was drivin in the highway 65 m/h and I was using the cruise control, just as it passed through the ezpass toll booth the pre-collision system activated and brake abruptly,I also feel that when you drive about 60 miles per hour you apply the brake I feel small vibrations in the car and finally the 4x4 control knob is close to the fan knob and by mistake I connected the 4x4 when I want to turn on the fan I think it should have something like security to not be connected so easily.

8 Cruise Control problem of the 2018 Toyota Tacoma

Failure Date: 09/15/2019

Tl- the contact owns a 2018 Toyota Tacoma. The contact stated that while driving with the cruise control activated at 72 mph the vehicle speed erroniously increased to speeds of more then 90 mph. Also the collision avoidance system malfunctioned and did not slow or stop the vehicle when approaching a second vehicle. In addition while the cruise control was activated the vehicle would suddenly slow down after the cruise control erroneously deactivated. The cause of the failures were not identified. The local dealer chatham parkway Toyota, (7 park of commerce way savanna GA) was contacted regarding the failures. The manufacturer was not yet notified. The contact indicated that the vehicle was previously serviced to repair a wave radar sensor. No further information was available. The failure mileage was 12,957. Jft.

9 Cruise Control problem of the 2018 Toyota Tacoma

Failure Date: 07/10/2019

With laser cruise control on, vehicle will suddenly slam on the brakes and release with no other vehicles in front of it. This has happened 8 or 9 times in the time I have owned the truck. I have taken it back to the dealer 4 times for this problem, only to be told that they cannot duplicate it and nothing was done to repair the problem. The next day I received a recall notice to bring the truck to Toyota to repair a front sensor for this problem. I brought the truck in to the dealer and they said that water was getting into the front grill sensor and they glued a piece of rubber/foam over the sensor. A few days later the same thing happened again. My wife and I are afraid to even drive the truck and Toyota has said everything is ok. The second problem is with laser cruise on and set at 75 miles an hour traveling up a grade, the vehicle will downshift into third gear running the tach to 300 rpm's over the redline. Toyota says that this is fine and the truck has a governer to keep the truck from over revving 300 rpm's above redline at 5800 rpm. I explained that in the owners manual it says to never run the engine to redline. Again Toyota says this is normal and that they will not fix the problem. Redline is 5500 rpm.

10 Cruise Control problem of the 2019 Toyota Tacoma

Failure Date: 04/26/2019

While driving on cruise control the engine shifts to a higher gear for no reason resulting in higher gas usage. I also noticed while having the radar on while on adaptive cruise control, the vehicle will automatically "slam" the brakes for no reason resulting me in a bad situation due to traffic. The system engages the brakes for no reason even though the vehicle that the system is detecting is not even close to me in the front. Please fix this cruise control issue.

11 Cruise Control problem of the 2018 Toyota Tacoma

Failure Date: 04/17/2019

Tl the contact owns a 2018 Toyota Tacoma. While driving approximately 65 mph with the cruise control activated, the vehicle suddenly accelerated to over 100 mph. The vehicle was taken to suburban Toyota (35200 gran river Ave, farmington hills, mi) where it was diagnosed that the failure was due to a faulty sensor. The vehicle was not repaired. The contact indicated that the failure occurred on multiple occasions. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 19,500.

12 Cruise Control problem of the 2019 Toyota Tacoma

Failure Date: 03/24/2019

I've had my truck for about 1000 miles. Four times while I was driving with the adaptive cruise control engaged I've had a vehicle pass me in an adjacent lane, then slow down to below my speed. Every time, the adaptive cruise control abruptly applied the brakes to slow my vehicle down for no apparent reason thereby putting me in danger or being rear-ended.

13 Cruise Control problem of the 2016 Toyota Tacoma

Failure Date: 08/28/2018

My car 2016 Toyota Tacoma has rebuilt title and voids the power train warranty. Toyota corp has TSB 0077-16 shift feeling enhancements for the transmission due delayed engagement park to drive or reverse to drive. Harsh 1st - 2nd upshift. Delayed upshift when using cruise control. I experience harsh up shift and downshift in the transmission while driving. It needs simple software update, but the Toyota cop declined this update for my vehicle (case# 1808271028 on 08/28/2018) if the problem persists it may make transmission uncontrollable ore delayed and vehicle may get into the accident. We have one schooled boy and infant girl. I want to inform about the issue so that all vehicles with the same problem and branded titles are to be corrected by Toyota corp at no expense to the owners. I will attach the TSB Toyota document that explains what is the problem.

14 Cruise Control problem of the 2018 Toyota Tacoma

Failure Date: 07/09/2018

Transmission locks out in 4th gear, mid speed surge, surge at idle when turning the wheels. Cruise control doesn't function it will increase rpm's on a flat road.

15 Cruise Control problem of the 2006 Toyota Tacoma

Failure Date: 10/01/2017

Tl the contact owns a 2006 Toyota Tacoma. The contact stated that the vehicle cruise control failed to engage. The contact stated that the failure occurred intermittently. The contact was also, concerned that the air bags may fail to deploy in the event of a crash. The vehicle was not taken to a dealership to have a diagnostic testing performed. However, the contact feels that the failure was caused by NHTSA campaign number: 12v092000 (air bags). The manufacturer informed the contact that the vehicle was not included in the recall. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was 162,500.

16 Cruise Control problem of the 2016 Toyota Tacoma

Failure Date: 10/21/2016

When driving on the highway the acceleration is erratic. I will press on the accelerator to get to a crusing speed (this happens anywhere between 40-60 mph) and the vehicle suddenly accelerates and the tacometer jumps from between 2000 and 3000 to the upper 4000 ¿ 5000 range. Additionally, when I have the car in cruise control, it does the same thing when going up hills. The engine revs loudly and the truck lurches erraticlly forward, so I have to quickly take it out of cruise control and get the peg on the tac down to a more reasonable level. Mechanics at the scheduled did not make a note of any issues. I will press this with them at the next tune-up and safety check. The online form here asks for a specific date. This has been ongoing since I purchased the car 11-Jun-2016 to present (21-oct-16).

17 Cruise Control problem of the 2007 Toyota Tacoma

Failure Date: 07/12/2016

The contact owns a 2007 Toyota Tacoma. While driving 60 mph with the cruise control feature engaged, the brake pedal was depressed and the cruise control disengaged. While attempting to reset the cruise control, the feature failed to operate normally. On several occasions, the cruise control operated independently. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 100,000.

18 Cruise Control problem of the 2008 Toyota Tacoma

Failure Date: 06/16/2016

My Toyota Tacoma will suddenly accelerate from a dead stop. I was stopped at a stop sign and the engine sped up; I had both feet on the brakes, back wheels spinning. I put it into neutral and it went back to normal. Another time I was backing into a parking space and it did it again, in reverse! again, neutral stopped it. This has happened 3 times and I'm afraid I'm going to kill myself or someone else! no, I did not have a foot on the accelerator and the brake! this happens after I've had the cruise control on, then turned it off. And again, it happens from a dead stop. I have a complaint number from Toyota. The dealer did diagnostics and couldn't find anything wrong. So Toyota will do nothing. I am contacting you to make public what we are experiencing with my Tacoma in case of a horrific accident. Toyota needs to stand behind what they sell. I have always maintained my truck; this is not due to my negligence. It is due to Toyota's. I need my truck fixed before someone is hurt or killed by it.

19 Cruise Control problem of the 2015 Toyota Tacoma

Failure Date: 06/05/2015

My 2015 Tacoma has an indication that cruise control (cc) is turned on, but not if cc is engaged or disengaged. I was driving in the right lane on a multiple lane freeway with cc on and engaged. When I approached slower moving traffic in the lane I was traveling, I moved to the left lane to pass. I used the accelerator in order to speed up and minimize my impact on the faster moving traffic in the lane. I did this without disengaging cc. Feeling social pressure to move right as traffic was backing up even at my accelerated speed, I released the accelerator and moved right. As my vehicle slowed and I approached the vehicle now in front of me, I did not recall cc was engaged. Since I was expecting my vehicle to continue decelerating, I was caught off guard when my cc engaged and quickly accelerate to resume the set speed after my vehicle's speed dropped 1-2 mph less than the speed my cc was engaged to maintain. I was able to quickly hit the brakes avoid a collision, but am concerned this failure to indicate the status of my cc may cause a future collision. Code of regulations title 49 section 571. 101 s5. 2. 8 states "each control for an automatic vehicle speed system (cruise control) and each control for heating and air conditioning systems must have identification provided for each function of each such system. " I do not believe my vehicle satisfies this requirement as their is no identification indicating the two settings available when cc is engaged and disengaged. I've contacted Toyota and the dealership where I purchased the truck. They offered no solution and stated the speedometer holding a constant speed was the indication cc was engaged. I question if this is a valid argument because when I put my foot on the accelerator when cc is engaged, my speed changes. Thank you for taking my complaint.

20 Cruise Control problem of the 2011 Toyota Tacoma

Failure Date: 09/23/2013

Have noticed this issue ever since purchasing the vehicle new, but it was most obvious on the first long mountainous road trip this week: with cruise control engaged when beginning up steep inclines, the cruise control guns the engine, pushing the vehicle to speeds nearly 5mph over the cruise control set speed. Was traveling interstate highways, so by "steep" I mean nothing more than interstate standards. It is an unexpected increase in speed and dangerous to the point that I eventually started disengaging cruise control going up inclines.

21 Cruise Control problem of the 2013 Toyota Tacoma

Failure Date: 07/15/2013

Brand new vehicle. Cruise control fails to disengage when depressing brake pedal. This is the on-going status. Brake must be pushed down about 2" before cruise control disengages. Despite repeated attempts to get the vehicle serviced, Toyota of olympia refuses to acknowledge the problem and so refuses to fix it even though vehicle in under warranty and extended service agreement. Several instances have occurred and resulted in unintended travel of a couple hundred feet towards an obstacle because the cruise did not disengage. I've driven scores of vehicles over the last 40 years and none of them had a cruise control that needed the brake pedal to be pushed down so far to disengage. It may be a design flaw that is causing an unsafe driving condition for anyone and everyone who drives a Tacoma, or it is a defective vehicle. Either way it is a danger.

22 Cruise Control problem of the 2009 Toyota Tacoma

Failure Date: 06/06/2013

I was driving south on I/s 95 in attleboro, MA at about 2:45 pm on 6/6/13 in a 2009 Toyota Tacoma pickup. My wife was in the passenger seat and the only other passenger in the vehicle. I was traveling at about 60 mph and moved to the right lane to take exit 2 onto rt 1a southbound. The cruise control was “on” and engaged. When I flipped the lever to disengage (cancel) the cruise control the truck did not start to slow down (my foot was off the accelerator pedal). If anything, the truck started to accelerate. I immediately applied the brakes very forcefully, with little, if any affect. I immediately put the transmission into neutral. By this time, I was off the highway and on the exit ramp. Centrifugal force was pushing me to the left. It pushed the truck over the curb and grass and into the entrance ramp from 1a south onto I/s 95 south. At this time, I saw a vehicle on the entrance ramp headed toward me. Had I tried to steer to the right the truck would most likely would have skidded and blocked the ramp entirely, so I turned to the left, turning into the skid, hoping that the oncoming vehicle would have room enough to pass to my right. My truck continued skidding to my left and I believe hit the curb on the right side of the entrance ramp. It then flipped onto the driver’s side, skidded along the pavement, hit something else – most likely the guardrail – and flipped back to the upright position. It came to rest on the left side of the entrance ramp. I do not know what became of the previously on-coming auto. There was nothing to indicate contact between contact between the two vehicles. Both side airbags deployed. Both of us had our seat belts attached. The front windshield was broken, the roof severely dented, scrapes along the driver's side and glass throughout the cab. The rescue arrived and transported us to the hospital.

23 Cruise Control problem of the 2001 Toyota Tacoma

Failure Date: 01/03/2013

At speed above 60 mph ,while the cruise control is on brake pedal is very hard and no response, and all the time brake is week at speed above 30mph. Very dangerous.

24 Cruise Control problem of the 2011 Toyota Tacoma

Failure Date: 04/24/2012

The contact owns a 2011 Toyota Tacoma. The contact was driving approximately 65 mph when there was a rapid increase in acceleration and engine rpms. The malfunction occurred unexpectedly when the cruise control was in activation. The vehicle came to a stop once the brake pedal was engaged and then resumed normally. The vehicle had not been diagnosed. The manufacturer was not notified of the defect. The approximate failure mileage was 6,000.

25 Cruise Control problem of the 2006 Toyota Tacoma

Failure Date: 12/01/2011

I was driving my 2006 Toyota Tacoma on the interstate at approxiately 65 mph. I was using cruise control and I merged into the passing lane to get over for a highway patrol that had a truck pulled over. I accelerated to pass another truck and when I went to slow down after passing the truck suddenly started accelerating by itself and I could not get the brakes to work. I thought something was wrong with the cruise control so I pushed the button to turn it off but it continued to accelerate. I was suddenly going over 90 mph and I could not stop. I was pushing the brakes and nothing was happening, just fighting against the acceleration. Finally I punched the accelerator with my foot and it felt like it came un-stuck or something. I previously took the truck in for a recall to cut off the gas pedal so it would not get stuck on the floor mat, so my pedal has already been shortened. I have owned this vehicle since it was new in 2006 and have never had anything like this happen. It was as if there was a computer glitch or something and it was just driving itself.

26 Cruise Control problem of the 2009 Toyota Tacoma

Failure Date: 09/22/2010

Using the cruise control, set at 61mph, climbing a small hill, the truck downshifted at least 3 times, revving the engine to over 5000 rpm. It startled me. My first reaction was to shift to neutral, but I knew that would cause the engine to over rev. I lifted the cruise control to shut it off, and the engine speed dropped. I drove a while with the cruise off, then retried it. On the first hill the same thing happened, and I shut off the cruise. I tried two more times with the same results. When I drove with out the cruise control on, the engine would down shift only one time, then at the top of the hill would upshift, resuming the normal operation. Through out the rest if my visit to PA, I drove w/o cruise control, and there were no over shifting incidents. On the return trip to nc on the 26th, I reset the cruise, and upon climbing a hill, the same thing happened. I shut off the cruise control until I got out of the hills, and then the operation seemed normal. I have made that trip before in the truck, and had nothing like the experience I just mentioned.

27 Cruise Control problem of the 2010 Toyota Tacoma

Failure Date: 04/08/2010

While driving in northern kentucky on a slight incline in hilly country southbound on I-75, I disengaged cruise control when a vehicle pulled in front of me. When vehicle moved off the highway about 15 seconds later, I re-engaged cruise control (at approx 65 mph) at which point the vehicle accelerated on its own to over 85 mph. I then disengaged cruise control and the vehicle normally decelerated. The exact same thing happened two (2) months earlier while traveling on an interstate in north carolina under the same circumstances (elevation around 2500-3000 ft on an incline). I reported this to the Toyota dealer last week and they said there is a recall to "reflash the computer" on my 2010 Tacoma v6. I have seen no reference to such a recall on Toyotas website for my VIN.

28 Cruise Control problem of the 2006 Toyota Tacoma

Failure Date: 03/26/2010

On the 26th of March 2010 about 3:00 pm, I was driving my 2006 Toyota Tacoma and got onto interstate 80 going west and began to merge into traffic. As I accelerated to get in front of a white semi-tractor trailer, I realized I was accelerating faster than I was pushing down on the gas pedal. My truck accelerated as if it wanted to go faster than I did, and so I let my foot off the gas pedal. But, my Toyota Tacoma still increased in speed, and the gas pedal seemed soft as if the truck was in cruise control. Realizing that my speed was 80 and rising rapidly, I pushed down on the brake pedal. The car barely slowed down and sped right back up continuing to accelerate as soon as I removed my foot from the brake. So, I pressed down the brake pedal with all my force, but the truck did not slow down sufficiently to safely pull over. So, then, I put one foot on the brake and used the other to push down the emergency brake. The truck decelerated enough to allow me to pull over into the far right lane. The car continued to roll despite application of both brakes, and so I threw the vehicle into park. This shut off the engine. I had my truck towed to the dealership and nothing has been resolved as of today.

29 Cruise Control problem of the 2007 Toyota Tacoma

Failure Date: 02/14/2010

The 2007 Toyota Tacoma accelerates on its own. The cruise control also accelerates on its own. Both of these events occurred twice on February 14, 2010. On March 1, 2010, the truck was taken to the Toyota service center in oxnard, CA.

30 Cruise Control problem of the 2005 Toyota Tacoma

Failure Date: 01/02/2010

2005 Toyota Tacoma truck would accelerate, going uphill. I was able to gain control by braking. Cruise control was not on. This has occurred over 10 times.

31 Cruise Control problem of the 2005 Toyota Tacoma

Failure Date: 12/06/2009

I have a Toyota Tacoma 2005. On December 6, 2009 at approximately 3pm I was heading south on I-190 in niagara falls NY. Cruise was on,but had to tap breaks because of slower moving vehicle. This did disengage the cruise & my truck began to slow down. When the car moved over I depressed the accelerator and at that time the truck went into overdrive/passing gear. The motor was roaring and I had no breaks . They were like a rock. It accelerated to over 94mph. It then disengaged on it's own& the speed decreased. I then turned off the cruise control not sure how long this went on but it seemed like an hour. And yes I panicked. This is not a mat problem / this truck is a death trap. I was told it could not be repaired until April of 2010 (5months).

32 Cruise Control problem of the 2006 Toyota Tacoma

Failure Date: 12/05/2009

Cruise control: since my 2006 Toyota Tacoma was brand new, when going up an incline such as a freeway overcrossing, or moderate incline, the cruise control will cause the automatic transmission to downshift one gear and many times two gears in an effort to maintain the freeway set speed (I. E. 65 or 70 mph). This cruise control throttle increase and transmission downshifting results in aggressive acceleration which continues past the set speed by a few miles per hour before the cruise control's increased throttle input backs off (since it shot past the cruise control's set speed!) before the cruise control initiates reduced throttle input to try to reduce the vehicle speed back down to the set speed. In addition to the lack of smooth cruise control set speed operation, this condition is especially scary when the incline is also on a curve. As the vehicle aggressively accelerates it can feel as the vehicle is traveling faster than it should for the curve causing the driver to tap the brake to disengage the cruise control to stop the excessive acceleration. To date, all inquiries to northern California Toyota dealer service representatives have resulted in the same response; the 2006 Tacoma does not have a speed control problem and there are no adjustments as it is controlled by the main computer.

33 Cruise Control problem of the 2008 Toyota Tacoma

Failure Date: 11/25/2009

While driving n from denver on I-25 on 11-25-2009, speed limit of 75mph, I had the cruise control operating set at a speed of 75-77 mph . There was no feet on either gas or brake pedal. Not until I found the Tacoma truck cruising at a speed above 90mph did I realize something was wrong w/the truck. I used the brake pedal and disengaged the cruise control and the vehicle came under my control. After re-setting the cruise control to 75 +/- mph, to test the issue, it occurred again. I chose to complete the trip w/o cruise control w/ diligent oversite.

34 Cruise Control problem of the 2006 Toyota Tacoma

Failure Date: 11/07/2009

I was stopped at a light. 30 or so seconds went by and my 2006 Toyota Tacoma started moving forward, so I looked back & no car was pushing me. I depressed the brake further, now the tires in back started to spin (size 33 inch large off road tires) the brake was not holding my truck back, I started moving into the intersection. I have a lot of off road racing experience. I put the car in neutral turned the truck off. I then put it in park started the truck & drove to the dealership at Toyota of orange. They checked the truck out with a computer, noticed my car floor mat was connected. The dealer would not do anything and told me they could not help. I think its a computer or cruise control issue, because the truck took off after tack was at idle while waiting for the light to change. I finally found this site to complain.

35 Cruise Control problem of the 2006 Toyota Tacoma

Failure Date: 08/15/2009

Now that the Toyota problems have received such widespread coverage, I wanted to report what I believe is a problem on my wife's 2006 Toyota Tacoma. On several occasions over the last 3 1/2 years, when using the cruise control, when there was an upgrade requiring the cruise control to increase power to maintain speed, the cruise control would simply start the vehicle accelerating without stopping and I had to turn off the cruise control. I didn't think too much about it until the recalls as I simply don't use it--just thought it was poorly designed compared to every other one I have ever had.
