1 Rear Suspension Leaf Spring Leaf problem of the 2002 Toyota Tacoma

Failure Date: 05/23/2007

The Toyota Tacoma had a rear axle wrap up, this was where the two piece driveshaft becomes loose at the spleen and caused a clung or looseness in the drive line, which caused undue stress on the engine and the transmission, which could cause the driveshaft to break at the yoke and fall to ground, causing an accident. This was getting progressively worse on the truck. I have taken the car under warranty to the dealer. They dismissed it as normal. This was not normal. It was a flaw in the springs they used on the truck.

2 Rear Suspension Leaf Spring Leaf problem of the 1998 Toyota Tacoma

Failure Date: 12/27/2005

My 1998 Toyota Tacoma had its left rear leaf spring break just in front of the rear differencial. This cause the leafs to twist inwards and rub against the gas tank exposing the bare metal of the tank. Luckly I took the truck to the mechanic before the rubbing against the tank worked its way through potentially causing an explosion with a spark. At this time I will be replacing the leaf springs (after taking some photos). I have also filed a complaint no 2005-12280233 with Toyota motor corp. Their position is that I will have to bear the cost of the repair as it is out of warranty. I believe this is a potentially unsafe condition and a recall to check leaf springs should be made.

I noticed a noise coming from underneath my vehicle and noticed that the right leaf spring had broken. I am the original owner, the vehicle had 57,000 miles on it when this occurred. This vehicle has never been abused and has been given proper maintenance. I feel that this is an item the mfg. Should stand behind.

5 Rear Suspension Leaf Spring Leaf problem of the 1997 Toyota Tacoma

Failure Date: 12/22/2004

I am the original owner of a 1997 Toyota Tacoma sr5, 4wd extra cab. I recently noticed the bed of my truck was sagging on the passenger side. I took my truck to a Toyota dealer service shop and they discovered that the leaf spring is broken on the passenger side. I have not done anything to cause this to happen to my truck. I do not have a towing hitch on my truck therefore, I do not tow heavy loads or any loads for that matter. I do not put heavy loads in the bed of my truck. I don not use my truck for hauling things. I have never installed a camping shell or any shell on the bed of my truck. I have never taken my truck off road and gone "four wheeling". Therefore, I am at a quandary as to why this would happen. I have not yet replaced the leaf spring. However, the driver side leaf spring will also need to be replaced because of sag. The Toyota service department at the dealership has not offered to replace the leaf spring free of charge.

7 Rear Suspension Leaf Spring Leaf problem of the 1996 Toyota Tacoma

Failure Date: 03/09/2002

Bad rear leaf springs, causing extreme instability. Vehicle: 1996 Toyota Tacoma 4x4 regular cab, regular bed, 4cylinder. The middle rear leaf spring has a tendancy to break, even under light loads. On my truck, the driver's side broke at around 100,000 miles, the passenger side broke at about 110,000 miles. This created two problems: 1) the rear of the truck tends to leave the ground on even small bumps. 2) there is less weight towards the front of the vehicle, causing a serious degradation in steering control. My springs broke with no load, I heard it happen each time. I contacted a Toyota dealership expecting there is some sort of recall on these springs, they said no, but there was a 'technical bulletin' for replacement of these springs. Toyota would not pay for the replacement, except if under warranty. (my warranty expired at 100,000 miles) they wanted $345 each side, plus labor to have the problem fixed. There was no way I could afford it. I drove around with for a year and a half with a broken leaf spring on each side, wondering when I would get in a crash. How many other Tacoma's out there have this same problem? many! I did some research into fixing the problem myself. I called a local Toyota repair shop (not the dealership), they stated that this is a major and very very common problem with 1996 Tacoma's, that I was the fourth caller for that day alone asking about the springs. Doing more research on the internet, I learned about countless cases of both leaf springs breaking, with and without a load. This needs to be a safety recall because the springs are prone to failure and the vehicle is extremely unstable when they are broken. . Read more...
