While operating this vehicle on my property in 4wd the transfer case became stuck in 4wd. It still is stuck in 4wd and won't return to 2wd as it should. I've been forced to remove the front driveshaft (no easy task) to prevent unnecessary wear and tear on the front differential. After reading numerous forums relating to this subject I've determined that this is a common occurrence with this model transfer case.

Transfer case gets stuck in 4 lo. Seems that Toyota is producing defective accuators that , once put in 4lo wont shift back to normal driving state. In this gear, truck runs 35 mph at 4000 rpm making it unsafe for highway driving and leaving consumers stranded. Repair cost over $2300.

- the contact has a 2004 Toyota Tacoma truck. The contact lived in a rural area and she needed to be able to go into 4-wheel drive, but when she attempted to go into 4-wheel drive the vehicle made a grinding noise and would not go into 4-heel drive. The dealer attempted to repair the vehicle once before unsuccessfully. The unsuccessful repair was done under warranty. She took the vehicle back to them to let them know that it was still not working because they didn't fix it correctly. The service manager refused to fix the vehicle even though it was still under warranty. The service manager suggested that she put the vehicle into park and then shift into 4-wheel drive instead of following the owner's manual method which stated that the vehicle should be put in neutral when shifting into 4 wheel drive, and the service manager suggested that the vehicle owner put the vehicle into park and then shift into 4 wheel drive. Every 3,000 miles when she went for an oil change she complained about the operation of the transmission and the grinding and clanking noises that it was making. The contact stated that the vehicle normally made the clanking noises when the vehicle was coming to a stop, and grinding noises when she attempted to go into 4-wheel drive. The current mileage was 40,000 miles. Update 4/25/07.

: the contact stated while the four wheel drive was shifted from four wheel drive high or low, the vehicle will not always shift. The four wheel drive light illuminated and the audible alarm stating the vehicle has not shifted came on. An additional 5 attempts were needed after the vehicle was moved. The technical representative from the manufacturer drove the vehicle and determined this was normal operating conditions. Also, when the outside temperatures were below zero degrees the keyless entry would not unlock the vehicle. The dealership tested the key fob and replaced the battery, but this did not repair the problem. Updated 3/22/2006 -.

Vehicle infected with extreme frame rust. Motor support ; transmission and transfer case support; power steering tubing rusted holes making steering impossible. The dealership known as ramey Toyota has my truck and charging me with unnecessary charges on towing the vehicle to their facility due to a spring clip become loose allowing the vehicle's right rear wheel to sway therefore it had to be towed. Contacted Toyota authorized the tow as well as a vehicle to ride so they can replace the leaf spring. Toyota now denies they authorized these two issues and left me with holding the charges. They called the towing service and not I so therefore I am not responsible. Please note all the aggravation caused from the above and added danger from this vehicle is the rust on the frame! please contact this dealership and get the dangers of driving this truck on the road. It is completely unsafe due to all that is mentioned here. Please contact Toyota as well that they are saying I called the towing service. Trust me this vehicle is extremely dangerous to drive due to all the rust and if something happens then you have this information that you and I can lean back on in case something does happen upon driving the vehicle. Thank you very much. I have taken pictures and videos of the vehicles rust and have tried to up load them to you but your system will not accept the images.

Transfer case seized, causing vehicle to come to complete stop in the middle of intersection. Vehicle was rendered immobile. Dealer stated that such operation "is normal on hard surfaces. " in my opinion, upredictable driveline seizure is dangerous and indicative of a manufacturing defect which will cause an accident if not corrected. Northcutt Toyota will not fix the problem.
