Toyota Tacoma owners have reported 10 problems related to transmission failure (under the power train category). The most recently reported issues are listed below. Also please check out the statistics and reliability analysis of Toyota Tacoma based on all problems reported for the Tacoma.
Transmission fails to start off in 1st gear especially when under a load such as a/c on during a hot day. Also constantly shifting from 6th to 4th then holding 4th for a short duration then shifting to 5th and immediate back to 6th then starts the process over again. I have verified this is the case with even new 2018 models the dealer and Toyota state this is normal operation. The issue is we never know when it is going to occur. We can drive from light to light and sometimes it leaves in first from a complete stop and other times it does not. This is dangerous when making unprotected turns in front of traffic. The most recent occurrence I was making a left turn in front of traffic and the vehicle refused to accelerate at the normal rate with the throttle near the floor it eventually grabbed first gear and began to accelerate normally just in time to avoid a collision. As stated this issue is more apparent in the summer heat of las vegas nv. Fellow consumers suggest that I invest in a 3rd party "tune" that resolves this erratic shifting behavior but the cost is nearly $800 and I don't want to void my manufacturer warranty by applying a 3rd party software repair but this is described by fellow owners as "the only fix". The issue is well documented in Toyota owners forums as well as other social media platforms but Toyota has their head in the sand after release of their 2nd revision to the shifting program over a year ago. Also, it should be mentioned that due to this constant erratic shifting (cruise control emphasizes the issue) we have never achieved anything close to the advertised mpg either we average 14 city 20 hwy 16-17mpg combined. 20 hwy mpg is achieved without cruise control, when using cruise control that hwy mpg drops to 18.

From a complete stop I turned right and accelerated. The transmission failed to shift causing the truck to nearly stop. Immediately after that pause, the transmission found a gear and the truck accelerated forward. My brakes stopped the truck and I drove it to my dealer. This has only happened once so far. I have an appointment to have it looked at. The Toyota national hotline gave me a claim number and called my dealer to make sure they look at my problem. Word on the street is that Toyota knows about this computer problem and is working on a "fix". I just hope it does not take as long as the accelerator problem to fix.

2009 Toyota Tacoma; be afraid, do not buy it as it has transmission troubles that Toyota will not live up to. Toyota is ignoring the issue!!!! I pulled out from a stop when the transmission hesitated then caught just in time for me to get through the intersection. I thought for sure I was going to be t-boned. I took it to my dealer and have yet to hear anything back. I have this truck 6 months. I was so excited to finally own a high end Toyota. Since Toyota "had" such a good name. I have come to the conclusion there are no good vehicles out there to buy. . . . . . . . Read more...
As many many many others have experienced, I just purchased a used 2006 Tacoma about 3 weeks ago and he lurching at red lights with the ac on is dangerous. I never know when the truck is going to go too far and strike the vehicle in front of me at the stop light. Also, the erratic shifting, mainly between 4th and 5th gear worries me of early transmission failure. The excessive acceleration on cruise control is ridiculous!!! there is no need for the aggressive down shifting to gain 2 mph. Right now I am concerned with the quality of the product and it's ability to last it's expected life span.

My experience with manual transmission on my current and previous Toyota pick-up trucks was not very good. First my previous, earlier model 98 Toyota Tacoma 2wd manual transmission had failed at about 55,000 miles just prior to the 60,000 mile powertrain warranty limit. The failure happened at the synchronizer from 4th to 5th gear when shifting from neutral according to Toyota technician at the time. The safety issue on this is that while driving and one needs to shift to 5th gear from neutral, one may have difficulty shifting and the transmission could have a catastrophic failure and at such freeway speed the vehicle could suddenly stall, stop and may go in a tailspin. Previous dealer where I bought the vehicle from repaired the transmission per the warranty. Now I have another Toyota Tacoma pick-up 4x4 having the same problem. I took it to the a Toyota dealer previously since it was still under warranty for powertrain and around 55,000 miles but dealer refused to take a look at the problem even after repeated attempts to get the problem corrected. I informed them that I have a similar problem before and they have fixed it. But this time around they refused. I have attempted several times from Sep 2006 until Jan 2007 and even called Toyota USA reps on the issue. I still own the truck and to get around the synchronizer problem, I have to downshift back to 3rd, 4th before I can go back to 5th gear. This can cause a lot of distraction while driving and to con unwitting driver unaware of what to do suddenly shifts to 5th from neutral the manual transmission squeaks/rattles like the sound of gears having problem meshing or breaking - thus in a worst case scenario one may loose driveability and capability to move the vehicle since the drive could get lost and may result in a failure. I kind a give up on it since the dealers and Toyota USA before don't want to pay attention to me. I know this current Toyota recall may result in them looking into this - safety issue.

I have a 2006 Toyota Tacoma with 43,800 miles on it. I have taken the Tacoma in to valley high Toyota in victorville numerous times for a terrible braking problem that they are now recognizing on the prius. The truck does not stop when driving over any uneven surface. When we went to valley high Toyota we were told that it is abs brakes trying not to lock up. In fact, the brakes don't work at all in this situation which could lead to a very serious accident. Furthermore, there seems to be a problem with the motor mounts as well. In 2007 we took the truck in for its first motor mount problem, it seems that both motor mounts were stretched beyond repair and had to be replaced. We thought the problem was over, but in Nov. 2009 the driver side motor mount snapped completely through. The truck has never been driven roughly and this should not have happened. I researched this problem and found that there were new designs put into place on the 2007 Tacoma models. The mechanic working on the truck said he could tell the truck had not been driven hard and stated that he had seen this happen before. We have also noticed that since the first motor mount problem the transmission has been shifting extremely rough. We've asked valley high Toyota about the transmission several times and they have said there's nothing wrong with it. Our warranty is almost up and I'm worried we could have a transmission failure within the next several months. My daughter drives this truck, and I no longer feel its safe for her to drive. I am very concerned about these problems and the fact that our local Toyota dealer wont do anything about the brakes or the transmission, we are fortunate that the motor mounts did not cause the engine to fall out of the truck, causing serious damage to the vehicle and injury to my daughter and anyone else.
