2 Automatic Transmission problem of the 2009 Toyota Tundra

Failure Date: 04/25/2011

I have a 2009 Toyota Tundra with the 5. 7l engine and 6 speed auto transmission. Intermittent shifting occurs as slow speeds, with the vehicle acting like the transmission is in neutral. This has caused serious concern when trying to accelerate and could lead to a potential accident. I have also had this occur on slick surfaces, with the engine reving up before the transmission engages. This has caused extreme tire slippage and risk of losing control. I have had this truck into the dealership three times and have had their quality team look at it, with no satisfactory resolution. Other owners of Tundras are also reporting this same phenomena, and concerns, with no resolution from Toyota. We all need your help to get corrective action put in place. An accident is waiting to happen, if it already hasn't.

3 Automatic Transmission problem of the 2008 Toyota Tundra

Failure Date: 12/08/2010

The 2007/2008 Toyota Tundra has a design defect with its air injection pump that allows the pump to injest water when driving for an extended period in rainy weather especially at highway speeds. When the water is then transferred to the switching valves. The vehicle will loose speed rapidly on a medium grade with no ability to accelerate. The cruise control causes the tranmission to downshift repeatedly trying to accelerate. This is extremely dangerous at high speed. In addition the vehicle stablization control is disabled. This condition also short circuits and disables 4w drive and cause the check engine light to come on. The inability to maintain speed or to accelerate creates a very hazardous condition. I have had this problem corrected twice at a cost of $1600. The dealer has informed me that the problem will continue to occur because of a design flaw. Toyota acknowledges the problem in a service bulletin to the dealership (t-sb-039-08 rev 2 dated 10/28/08). There is a remedy for this problem but the dealership claim it has no authorization from Toyota to implement it. As a result I am forced to drive a vehicle that becomes unsafe when it rains.

4 Automatic Transmission problem of the 2007 Toyota Tundra

Failure Date: 11/15/2010

The contact owns a 2007 Toyota Tundra. When the vehicle was parked the contact noticed two plastic pieces that surround the gear shift were bent and had crumbled which made it difficult to place the gear shift in the desired gear. The gear shift became caught in between the plastic. The contact had to push the plastic down in order to move the gear shift since the vehicle did not recognize when the gear shift was in the park position until the contact pushed the two plastic pieces downward. The vehicle was taken to the dealer. The technicians stated that the two plastic cover pieces attached to the gear shift needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The approximate failure mileage was 63,000.

6 Automatic Transmission problem of the 2009 Toyota Tundra

Failure Date: 09/01/2010

The contact owns a 2009 Toyota Tundra double cab sr5. The contact stated that the transmission was not shifting properly and when attempting to accelerate, the vehicle would independently downshift to lower gears. The vehicle was taken to a local dealer where they added transmission fluid but the failure was not corrected. The vehicle was then taken to a second dealer who stated that there was too much transmission fluid in the vehicle and advised the contact to replace the transmission. The current mileage was 31,324 and the failure mileage was 30,000.

7 Automatic Transmission problem of the 2001 Toyota Tundra

Failure Date: 08/27/2010

I was traveling down I-95 south in the DC area when suddenly the vehicle began to loose power causing the vehicle to decelerate in rush hour traffic. I managed to make it to the top of the hill and drift down to the bottom of the hill.

8 Automatic Transmission problem of the 2007 Toyota Tundra

Failure Date: 03/08/2010

I have a 2007 Toyota Tundra sr5 double cab and have had all of my regular maintenance completed on time and at a local Toyota dealership. I have made the complaint of my gas pedal sticking and my floor mats were not an issue. They claim they "fixed" the recall problem with adding a part to the gas pedal. Since I have had my truck back, it has not worked properly. The gas pedal still accelerates on its on or decelerates on its on. The gas pedal "floats" with your foot so the engine is constantly making the rpm's rise and fall constantly upon riding over bumps or hills. I don't want a "part" to be installed, I want the entire pedal to be replaced! I like my truck, however, the engine does not run correctly and is constantly making a ticking sound like a diesel engine would sound. I have made several complaints to the dealership and they are constantly telling me it is ok and nothing is wrong. Transmissions are not made to just down shift 3 gears right off the bat on the interstate on flat ground. Nothing has been done to try to correct this problem as they proclaim there is no problem. They are crazy! pulling a horse trailer made it difficult for the transmission to shift properly and it was in tow mode. It took 1 mile or longer for it to shift from 1/2 gear to 4 gear and the rpm's were over 2,500. . This is not normal. I felt it would never shift downward from 1/2 gear. I am afraid to pull my horses with the transmission acting this way.

9 Automatic Transmission problem of the 2005 Toyota Tundra

Failure Date: 03/02/2010

Tundra 2005 sr5 double cab. Purchased on March 2005 and I noticed very early on sometimes a hesitation to accelerate from a stop or from low speeds specially when waiting to make a turn. When this happens I press the gas pedal but the truck does not move or moves very slowly and then a jump to start moving normally again.

10 Automatic Transmission problem of the 2007 Toyota Tundra

Failure Date: 02/15/2010

The gas pedal stuck I put the vehicle in neutral and my foot on the brake. Now the truck is not driving right. It sounds like the transmission is messed up now.

11 Automatic Transmission problem of the 2008 Toyota Tundra

Failure Date: 01/31/2010

I have a 2008 Toyota Tundra with a 4. 7 l engine and 5 speed automatic. On two separate occasions, I have had the truck in park on a very slight incline, and the truck has suddenly started rolling backwards.

12 Automatic Transmission problem of the 2009 Toyota Tundra

Failure Date: 01/10/2010

The contact owns a 2009 Toyota Tundra. While approaching a stop sign or depressing the brake pedal at speeds of at least 25 mph, there would be a sudden abnormal increase in the rpms. The vehicle would also lunge forward while shifting gears. The vehicle was taken to the dealer where they advised him that the transmission on his particular model was operating as designed. No repairs were made to the vehicle, however the failure persisted and progressively became worse. The failure and current mileages were approximately 7,816. Updated 04/05/10 the cosumer stated there was a harsh shift/ hesitation from 1st to 2nd gear. Updated 09/13/10.

13 Automatic Transmission problem of the 2008 Toyota Tundra

Failure Date: 01/05/2010

The contact owns a 2008 Toyota Tundra. The contact stated that while driving approximately 30 mph, the vehicle would jerk and pull abnormally when attempting to accelerate. The vehicle was inspected by an authorized dealer who informed the contact that the ecm terminals had failed. The vehicle was not repaired. The VIN was unavailable. The failure and current mileage was approximately 34,000.

14 Automatic Transmission problem of the 2007 Toyota Tundra

Failure Date: 12/21/2009

I own a 2007 Toyota Tundra - 4x4. Several times I noticed that it had moved from where I parked it. It had moved from the spot that I had placed it and rolled backwards, down a fairly steep grade, a distance of around 20 feet. I tried several times to replicate the incident and discovered the following: when parked on a hill without the parking brake engaged the transmission would not "lock" in park while the truck was in 2 wheel drive. This condition can be replicated only when the truck is placed into park immediately after having the anti skid (traction control) respond to a slippery condition. The problem does not occur when the truck is placed into 4 wheel drive. The problem also does not occur if the automated anti skid response does not activate itself. The rolling does not always begin immediately. I have not yet tried to get the same responses while backing the truck up the hill in reverse. I reported this to the local Toyota dealer in warren, ohio on Tuesday, December 22, 2009. I am very concerned that this condition may cause serious injury or death to anyone who may find themselves behind the vehicle when it begins to roll.

15 Automatic Transmission problem of the 2005 Toyota Tundra

Failure Date: 12/18/2009

2005 Toyota Tundra double cab sr5 transmission mount has 4 bolts and a plastic centering piece 3 of the bolts had worked their way out and the 4th was half way out centering piece was loose and floating in the crossbeam tightened the one bolt went to bob tyler Toyota in pensacola, FL. All that was asked of mewas did I have the extended warranty. I said no I thought the Tundra was covered for 100,000 miles. Besides I considered this a safety issue because my transmission could have become disconnected and caused a wreck or worse. I consider this unacceptable and the attitude of the associate was unconcerned. What can be done about this?.

16 Automatic Transmission problem of the 2010 Toyota Tundra

Failure Date: 11/10/2009

The contact owns a 2010 Toyota Tundra which was purchased in 2009. While driving at various speeds, as low as 10 mph, the vehicle would act as if it were in neutral and attempted to accelerate. The vehicle would come to a complete stop on its on and then proceed to move forward, throwing her violently back into her seat. The vehicle was taken to the dealer where the failures could not be duplicated. The dealer investigated further and stated that the failure was caused by a software malfunction and there was nothing they could do to repair the failure; therefore, they were releasing the vehicle to her. No repairs were made to the vehicle to correct the failures. The failure and current mileages were under 5,800.

17 Automatic Transmission problem of the 2008 Toyota Tundra

Failure Date: 10/31/2009

While in park and with engine running and parking brake engaged, after about 5 seconds vehicle suddenly rolled backwards down an approximate 10 degree slope and crashed into a building. My wife and 3 children were in the vehicle (fortunately all were wearing seat belts) and suffered minor injuries.

18 Automatic Transmission problem of the 2006 Toyota Tundra

Failure Date: 10/18/2009

Toyota Tundra 2006 double cab 4wd automatic transmission. I was 4 wheeling and stopped behind a polaris, by approximately 5 feet. I was in drive and 4wd and brakes applied. I stopped because the polaris had stopped. All of a sudden with the brakes applied my Tundra lunged forward at a very high rpm crashing into the polaris. At that point I put the transmission into park and shut the engine off. Had I not responded with the action I took I would have shoved the polaris with 2 people into a very deep wash. Needless to say there is a great deal of damage done to my Toyota. The Toyota has major damage to the front end. Had I not taken the action that I did, we all would have ended up in the deep wash with major injuries. When I arrived home I immediately called tim's Toyota in prescott arizona where the vehicle was purchased. The 2 people that could help me with the situation were not available so a call to them tomorrow will be in order. I have not contacted my insurance as yet as I feel that Toyota is the responsible party for the accident. I had written to you quite a long time ago regarding the cruise control surging to 5000 rpm's when approaching even a minor incline. So I don't use it anymore. I am afraid to drive my truck into my garage for fear that the truck will lunge forward, only this time it will crash into my hvac and water heater, both are on propane.

19 Automatic Transmission problem of the 2007 Toyota Tundra

Failure Date: 09/30/2009

As I slow down I feel a clunk in the transmission. A few seconds after I come to a complete stop, it feels as if someone bumps me in the rear, only there's no car behind me. . Also in the mornings the transmission will not change into 6th gear until I drive app. 1 mile .

20 Automatic Transmission problem of the 2000 Toyota Tundra

Failure Date: 08/03/2009

8/3/2009 - steering rack lost all fluid while driving on a highway. Able to maintain control, brought to mechanic who replaced steering rack. 09/08/2009 - front brake lines corroded thru and lost all brake fluid while driving, brought to mechanic who replaced front and rear brake lines as all required replacement. 09/11/2009 - shift cable failed (corrosion) - able to get off the road and towed to mechanic. Frame and underbody of this truck have excessive corrosion which led to these failures. The integrity and safety of this vehicle is questionable.

21 Automatic Transmission problem of the 2007 Toyota Tundra

Failure Date: 06/22/2009

A friend and I were attempting to launch his jetski. I backed my truck down the boat ramp and my friend was on the jetski. My friend was having trouble getting the jetski to come off the trailer so, I put the truck into park and got out to shove the jetski off. As I got out I noticed the truck lunge and start to roll backwards. I attempted to reach my foot back in to hit the brake. By this time my shoes were wet and because of the position of my body, my foot slipped off of the brake pedal and smashed the gas pedal which caused truck to take off in reverse. As I was still halfway in and out of the truck the door drug me down the boat ramp and under the water with the truck. Luckily I was able to get free and had no serious injuries. The truck however was fully submerged and the jetski trailer was broken in the process. Note: the original transmission was changed out under a warranty claim at around 10,000 miles by the dealership.

22 Automatic Transmission problem of the 2005 Toyota Tundra

Failure Date: 04/21/2009

When coming to a stop there is a periodic, loud clunk that comes from the front of the vehicle. Dealership will not acknowledge even though technical service bulletin was issued to dealers. . Read more...

23 Automatic Transmission problem of the 2007 Toyota Tundra

Failure Date: 03/25/2009

My 2007 Toyota Tundra lunges forward very often. It does it when I'm coming to a stop. It will do it as I'm decelerating or even after I've come to a complete stop. I hit my wife's car in the rear bumper this week while I was following her. That is what has finally pushed me over the edge to make a complaint. Since I've done research on this problem it seems like everybody is running into the same issue with 2005 Tundras and up. This needs to get fixed before somebody gets seriously injured.

24 Automatic Transmission problem of the 2007 Toyota Tundra

Failure Date: 03/20/2009

I have a 2007 Toyota Tundra crewmax I feel a clunk in the transmission or rear end a few seconds after I come to a complete stop. It feels as if some other car has bumped me in the rear and there are no other vehicles around. On some occasions the thump is much worse than other times. This started several months ago and I thought it may have had something to do with a sudden stop I made when an animal crossed the road in front of me. I haven't had my dealer check this yet but I now realize others are having the same problem so I will get it to the dealer soon. I have approximately 26,000 miles and close to warranty expiration.

25 Automatic Transmission problem of the 2000 Toyota Tundra

Failure Date: 10/10/2008

At 80,000 miles my transmission needs to be replaced . I have never abused this vehicle in any form and feel that Toyota should reimburse the many thousands of owners who seem to be having the same problems with this model. For the amount of money these vehicles cost it only seems fair that Toyota should be forced to stand behind their products.

26 Automatic Transmission problem of the 2008 Toyota Tundra

Failure Date: 09/27/2008

Truck was in cruise control. Accelerated to pass slower traffic. Let off throttle. Truck went to full throttle. Could not get truck to decelerate. Had to stand on brakes to bring to a stop. Truck needs new rotors and pads Toyota will not help. Occurred once. The consumer stated the floor mat and gas pedal can interact. When the all weathr mat is not clipped in place, and is moved under the gas pedal, it will become fully depressed. The mat can trap the pedal. Updated 11/13/09 updated 03/29/10.

27 Automatic Transmission problem of the 2001 Toyota Tundra

Failure Date: 09/21/2008

At first shifting transmission into gear was extremely difficult, and impossible a few times. I had thought that it was the linkage that was dried out and sticking. Transmission is skipping 3rd gear shift and slamming into overdrive with a nerve racking bang, especially at highway speeds when accelerating. Transmission has not been repaired at this time.

28 Automatic Transmission problem of the 2002 Toyota Tundra

Failure Date: 08/10/2008

While driving on the highway I would occasionally hear a slight "clunk". Sounded like it might be the transmission. This first occurred around 85k miles. Then again about a year later. After the second or third time, I took the car a transmission specialist. They reported that the overdrive gear bearing was failing and this was common on the early Tundras. Apparently the needle bearing begins to fall apart and eventually the whole transmission goes out. Rebuilding the transmission costs just about as much as replacing it and there was already damage to the gears. End result -- I had to replace the entire transmission at 100k miles. If this is truly a common failure, it seems that Toyota put these trucks on the road with a transmission that wasn't up to the task. I rarely haul heavy loads or trailers and consider my use of the truck to be very gentle. Hardly anything that would cause the early demise of a transmission.

29 Automatic Transmission problem of the 2002 Toyota Tundra

Failure Date: 08/08/2008

2002 Tundra 6 cylinder automatic transmission with 84,900 miles on it had total failure on I-10 while going 70mph. The engine continued to work but pushing the gas peddle did nothing. We safely pulled over, but the truck would not go forward or in reverse. I had complained to 2 different dealers of a bumping feeling and other abnormalities for several months, but neither dealer could detect a problem. I have maintained this truck as directed by the manufacturer and it is otherwise in excellent condition. I have only towed a trailer once with the trailer and cargo weighing less than 2000 lbs. However, the problems I complained of to the dealer occurred before I towed the trailer. Fortunately, I had the Toyota extracare extended warranty (7 years or 100,000 miles) which covered the cost of replacing the transmission with a reconditioned transmission.

30 Automatic Transmission problem of the 2001 Toyota Tundra

Failure Date: 08/08/2008

On the day of the malfunction, I had stopped at a red light. In my home town, after a 60 mile trip to ri. The engine died. Repeatedly 3 or 4 times with the lever in park, I would start my 2001 Toyota Tundra. Engaging the lever, the engine would die. Vehicle towed to dealer, who informed me the transmission was no good. 72,110 registered on odometer. 4 weeks previous to that date, I had difficulty shifting the lever. Dealer inspected said lever, could find nothing wrong and they adjusted linkage and lubricated. Now they tell me I need an entirely new factory rebuilt transmission and they charged me 2/3 of cost (I paid approximately $2,000) because they said I was a "good customer" and it was no longer under warranty according to them. Have since found out that there have been numerous malfunctions with transmissions for no reason in Tundras and sequoias using the same trans. An outside transmission specialist (not Toyota) when contacted, told me that when I had the problem previously with my shifting lever, that should have been the indication that something was seriously wrong with the transmission, b/c it was not a linkage problem but a transmission malfunction (problem for a fact). I do not have the old part, the Toyota dealer kept it.

31 Automatic Transmission problem of the 2001 Toyota Tundra

Failure Date: 06/26/2008

The automatic transmission gear selector lever arm on my 2001 Toyota Tundra fell off when I tried to shift into drive. I found that the metal connection of the lever arm had sheared off the assembly on the steering column. If this had occurred while the vehicle was being driven (I. E. When shifting into a lower gear on a hill) it could have had severe consequences.

32 Automatic Transmission problem of the 2007 Toyota Tundra

Failure Date: 04/11/2008

After parking the truck for about an hour, I went back into the truck . As I started the truck the 4-wheel lo light appeared on the dash with an indicator beep. The problem with this is that the truck was in 2-wheel drive and never engaged in any 4-wheel operation. At the point of this I tried to put the truck in reverse and it was not there it was neutral, so then I shifted into drive and that was neutral also, I repeated this 4 or 5 times in disbelief. At that point I put the vehicle in park and exited the vehicle not realizing that the vehicle would have no park. I then walked along side the truck and so it roll down my driveway and hit the garage. The truck only rolled about 20 feet approx, but caused about $5,000. 00 in damage between the 2. I preceded to then call hoffman Toyota and explain. The dealer was accommodating at first offering a loaner vehicle while they ran tests. The service manager told me that in all his time in the business he never heard of such a thing, saying only operator error could cause this. My frustration level was rising but remained calm. Along the way I was talking to Toyota corp about my problem and had a case manager appointed to me. Toyota corp had sent a field tech to the dealer for further review. His test also showed no vehicle error found and that no related cases of transmissions coming out of park. He also indicated that this would only be possible from operator error. So I now had to take responsibility for my house garage and truck repair. After picking up the vehicle I had a friend ask me if I looked into the ntsb. Gov website, and I said no, we then proceeded to the site and it took approx. 10 seconds to see a related occurrence with a 2007 Tundra with 16,000 miles and happened twice to the individual. I feel very uncomfortable parking this truck thinking this could happen again, it is clear that there is some type of electronic malfunction and what causes this to happen at will is unclear.

33 Automatic Transmission problem of the 2007 Toyota Tundra

Failure Date: 02/08/2008

The contact owns a 2007 Toyota Tundra. While the vehicle was parked, it automatically shifted from park into neutral on two occasions. During the first incident, the vehicle rolled into the front of another vehicle. During the second incident, the contact had to depress the brake pedal in order to stop the vehicle. The VIN was unknown. The current mileage was 17,000 and failure mileage was 16,850.

34 Automatic Transmission problem of the 2000 Toyota Tundra

Failure Date: 01/05/2008

My Toyota Tundra's planetary gear exploded within the transmission and disable the vehicle completely. The transmission was in otherwise perfect condition. It left me strand on 2 separate occasions without any pre-notice that the transmission was having any issues.

35 Automatic Transmission problem of the 2007 Toyota Tundra

Failure Date: 08/15/2007

2007 Toyota Tundra crewmax 5. 7 has serious vibration from 30-40 mph. When you let up on accelerator the problem ceases. If the transmission changes gears the problem goes away. Dealership has driven the truck and can reproduce the problem. Dealership says they cannot fix problem until "fix" is known.
