Automatic transmission
transmission on the Tundra truck is a known problem, experienced by thousands of Tundra owners across the country, and yet Toyota fails to admit the problem and help owners with the cost of repair. The transmission on my 2000 Tundra needs to be replaced due to abrupt gear shifting which cause the truck to lunge forward. I've complained to Toyota and their answer was " your truck is out of warranty". I've been a Toyota owner for 15 years, but after this experience I will not buy another Toyota.

I bought my truck and about three weeks ago I was driving along when it died. Anytime I came to a full stop it died. Turns out it's the transmission and a lot of other people have had the same problem. Toyota refuses to issue a recall on their planetary gear even though it malfunctions. This failure caused my truck to stop in a busy intersection and almost killed me.
The contact owns a 2006 Toyota Tundra. The contact was driving 30 mph and there was an abnormal increase in engine rpms causing the transmission not to shift correctly. She depressed the brakes and the tachometer increased to 2 and would not decline. In addition, when she attempted to shift into reverse and released the brakes, the rear tires began to spin and she crashed rear-end into a boulder. The rear bumper was damaged and there were no injuries. The dealer stated they were advised by the manufacturer not to diagnose the vehicle. The vehicle was neither diagnosed nor repaired. The contact stated that the vehicle has had three transmissions since purchase. The failure mileage was 20,000 and the current mileage was 53,000. Updated 11/9/10
the consumer stated the transmission had to be replaced three times. She also stated there were times when the vehicle would just take off at a high speed when the accelerator pedal was tapped lightly. When the vehicle was started, the engine would race extremely high. The high idle would also effect the way the vehicle shifted into gear. Updated 11/12/10
the drivers side has a grommet and the floor board has a grommet, but there is no hook to hold the floor mat in place. Also, the transmission has been replaced three times. Updated 11/1/610.

The cruise control on my 2005 Toyota Tundra downshifts the engine on the slightest incline. It jumps from approximately 2100 rpm's to over 3500 rpm's. This causes the vehicle to loose traction on just a wet pavement, not raining just wet last visit to the dealer this was part of the issues I wanted them to look into. The only thing I got was "that's just the way they work". This is a definite safety issue and needs some attention real soon. Toyota which owns suburau has the same transmission problem as this Tundra, I had one of those also that did the very same thing. Not only a safety issue, but it also causes much more wear and tear on the parts. There is also issues with the way the transmission shifts, sometimes it does and other times it don't and always unpredictable. The converter lockup locks up at the slowest speeds ,anywhere from 20 to 55 mph. In city traffic this causes you to downshift constantly and once you do you have to get right back off the accelerator and or get on the brake. It's crazy to be "that's just the way they work".
2005 Toyota Tundra double cab, v8. When cold engine idles higher than what I would consider normal. When stopped at stop lights and the like in normal driving the transmission will jump or kick sometimes causing vehicle to move forward. . . Especially when a/c is on. When cruise control on it will downshift to passing gear and accelerate way more than normal, tach goes to near redline, when encounter the slightest of grades. . . Also happens when cruise is disengaged to slow and then resumed. Transmission shifts improperly when slowing down such as when slowing to make a turn. . . When apply the gas going through the turn the engine will rev before slipping back into gear. I began noticing these things immediately after purchasing vehicle in Nov. '05.
I have a 2005 Toyota Tundra. At times, it doesn't shift up properly and the engine revs up very high, but the truck doesn't accelerate. At times, when I am coasting down a hill, it will shift down, causing the truck to slow down. I took it to the dealer and was told that the transmission is completely electronic and that happens sometimes. I feel that this is a factory defect. Last week, I was trying to make a left turn at an intersection. I pressed the pedal but the truck didn't accelerate. I could have been hit by an oncoming car. I've come to realize the this is a dangerous defect, as well. I hope eventually, they asses this problem and issue some kind of fix.
2000 Toyota Tundra 65,000 miles. Out of warranty. The orbital gear in the transmission blew up. This gear has been discontinued by Toyota ,and replaced with a more heavy duty gear. This is a defect of the transmission. Many Tundra owners across the country are having the same problem. Toyota has turned their backs to this problem. This is a $3000. 00 repair job.
1. Driving in town traffic. While stopping at an intersection with stop sign. Started to drive through intersection and herd and felt clunking and grinding, including jerking of the truck. The truck would not drive. Had to get out of truck and push by hand to the side of road. Called aaa to have vehicle towed to valley-hi Toyota. 2. Dealeship stated that it would be $78. 00 to check the transmission and give me a repair estimate. I received a call 3 hours later and was told that my transmission blew up and it was toast. I asked what was done to diagnose the problem and could not get a clear answer. The dealer stated that my warranty was up at 60,000 and I had 67. 000 miles. They also told me that it could not be determined what was wrong unless they removed the transmission, which would cost more. Had vehicle towed to a transmission shop and discovered that the upper overdrive planetary gear assembly had literally came apart. This resulted in a total rebuild of transmission, costing $2600. 00
3. Overdrive planetary gear assembly replaced. I have damaged parts, including the gear assembly.

I purchased a Toyota Tundra brand new from the dealer. I have never taken my truck to any other mechanic shop for service. I am diligent in keeping up my maintenance service and do so only at the place of purchase. At around 24k miles, transmission blew out. I towed the vehicle to the dealer. It was replaced and covered under warranty. At 84k miles, transmission blew out again. I towed the vehicle to the dealer to find out what was going on and for repair. I asked what was happening and it was told to me "I don't have answer. . . I wish I could tell you what's going on". Warranty was expired, therefore I ended up spending $3,000 to have it replaced.
My 2001 Toyota Tundra has 71,000 miles and I and having transmissin problems. The vehicle is currently at an aamco and needs a full transmission rebuilt. I want to know if this is a reaccuring problem from other Toyota customers. I aslo know of two ohers with the sames related issues. I would appreciate a responce. Sincerley, fidel delgado.
2001 Toyota Tundra brakes shake excessively even after replacing them with new ones. Transmission makes a loud thump when going into overdrive.
While driving 10 to 15 miles an hour drivetrain locks up and vehicle skids to a stop. Dealer says it is an intermittent problem, and cannot duplicate. They have had the truck for two weeks. It has happened twice on the 19 of September and the 19th of October. From around 5:30 to 6:00 pm. I will drove it on the 19th of November hoping it will happen again. Computer and backup computer checks okay, no metal in any of the drivetrain components. This is a 4x4 sr5 2000 Tundra.
At 20,000 miles, the transmission started to shift very hard and the cel came on. Dealer said there was significant damage to the transmission and the error code from the obd ii stated "mis shift". It took 7 weeks to get the part.

Yes I have a 2001 Toyota Tundra that the transmission exploded going down the highway almost causing us to get wiped out. There was no reason for the transmission going out except a parts failure. Its our understanding that this has happened to quite a few of the 2001 Tundras. There needs to be a recall thank you and have a good day.
The vehicle rolled back while in the park position. The transmission assembly was replaced. The consumer requested either a new vehicle or a full refund for the vehicle. Mr scc.

2003 Toyota Tundra 4wd with noise and vibration resulting from oil viscosity. Ph.
Just like another consumer listed I too had a failed transmission. The cost to repair was around $3,100. 00. A barely 4 yr old truck should not have lost a transmission already. We own a 1970 model chev p/u that has never had a transmission. The quality of Toyota has not stood up to the cost of the "better" manufactured vehicle. I am truly disapointed in the quality, one of the handles in the back has stripped out and is about to fall off, the back dirver's window lock has broken and flops in the wind when the window is open. I am also experiencing the very same brake shutter has other consumers and I just paid for a $450. 00 brake job with new rotors and pads and still have the shutter. Now after reading these other reports I am concerned about reliability of my truck.
While driving vehicle came to a complete stop, hit accelerator and vehicle stalled. Had vehicle serviced, transmission went out.
The gear selector fails when trying to move the selector from park to reverse to drive. Also from drive to reverse to park. The problem has degraded to the point that all I have available at this time is neutral and drive. The dealer has told me that the cable that runs from the column selector to the transmission is kinked and will need to be replaced. The cable is special order which leads me to believe that Toyota does not expect this part to fail. The cable is $150. + and the labor to install is $350. + on three occasions I have been backing out of my driveway onto PA rt 24 and oncoming traffic has had to stop while I tried to move the selector from reverse to drive. My position is that this cable was either manufactured incorrectly which caused the kinking or was installed incorrectly during assembly. The truck is not used commercially and has not been subjected to harsh use during the last two years. The truck will be repaired this week at my expense and I will be requesting the defective cable for examination. Nlm.
When vehicle is fully loaded brakes will overheat when applied while going down a hill. Also, automatic transmission will not go into correct gear, resulting in more excessive brake application.
No summary listed for above vehicle. (dot number: b7jc dc7x tiresize: 265/70 r16).
When coming to a complete stop vehicle jumps forward and vibrates. This could cause an accident.
Constant binding of the transmission. After coming to a complete stop, vehicle will jerk forward as though it has ben hit in the rear-end. This will also happen after coming to a complete stop, and after brake pedal is released, vehicle will jerk. At times, and after coming to a complete stop and sitting for a few minutes, vehicle will jerk forward as though it has been hit in the rear-end. Vehicle feels as though the transmission is binding when brakes are applied. Once brakes are released, binding is released, and jerking begins. I have taken vehicle to the dealership within a few weks of purchase to have problem corrected, only to be told nothing was wrong, even though they were aware of the problem, but there was no fix. I have searched the internet, and have read various complaints by other Toyota Tundra owners experincing the same problem, but Toyota fails to reconize the problem.
There is a distinct vibration in the automatic transmission when driving forward, always at about 24 miles per hour. This has occured since the vehicle was brand new. I had it checked by the selling dealer at 2000 miles and was told that it was a known.
