My 2013 Toyota Tundra truck ( 74,734 miles) suddenly had engine failure while driving down an incline at 48 mph. I lost power steering and power brakes. After eventually pulling the wheel with much effort and using the emergency brake I was able to get the truck off to the side of the road. I turned the key and the engine started right away and I was able to drive again but only at a reduced speed of 40 mph or less ( it's called "limp" mode) my mechanic diagnosed it as a secondary air injection pump failure. Upon investigating this on several Tundra owner message boards, I find that this is a common failure Tundra trucks at around 75000 miles. The Toyota dealer confirmed that this has been a common problem and looked up my VIN number to see if it qualified for a warranty extension program that Toyota has offered for some 2012 and 2013 Tundra trucks. Unfortunately my VIN number was a few numbers beyond the extension program. Had my wife been driving the truck when this happened, I am not so sure she would have had the strength to safely bring the truck under control and get it off the road with no power steering or power brakes. I want Toyota to extend the warranty on this faulty part before someone gets into a serious accident. They have obviously admitted there is a problem with this part and should extend it to all Toyota truck owners with this particular problem. Not just a select few.
On numerous occasions while driving, my 2012 Toyota Tundra suddenly lost acceleration power and experienced the engine failure known as "fail-safe" or "limp-home" mode. As evidenced by Toyota t-sb-0160-11, warranty policy bulletins, and warranty enhancement programs, Toyota is well aware of this serious design flaw and safety issue, yet has chosen to repair or compensate only a select few. The parts that had to be replaced after my vehicle repeatedly went into �fail-safe / limp-home� mode correspond directly with the part numbers referenced in Toyota warranty policy bulletin pol17-02 which covers this defect in other models, but not in my 2012 model. My out-of-pocket cost to repair this manufacturer's defect was $3034. 87. This a known air injection system water intrusion defect and common safety complaint at the NHTSA and on multiple Toyota forums, affecting numerous 2012 Tundra's which Toyota is refusing to acknowledge and compensate for. I have written several letters to both the ceo of Toyota and the Toyota customer experience center requesting reimbursement of my repair costs and have been denied twice; the first denial in writing, the second denial via telephone. I request the NHTSA investigate this serious safety issue to protect the lives of others driving these dangerous vehicles. Toyota has an ethical and safety obligation to the consumer to remedy this defect and to compensate those of us who have had to bear the financial burden of their failure to correct this well-known issue.

On oct 7,2010,we purchased a 2010 Toyota Tundra. Our vehicle is 2 months old and has already had a catastrophic engine failure. The vehicle has 2276 miles. While driving home from work my husband heard a loud bang. He pulled over and oil was gushing every where. He had it towed to the local Toyota dealer. We were told the vehicle threw a rod and went into the bottom part of the engine, requiring a complete engine rebuild. Has not been repair yet, awaiting parts. We were also told, there had been other vehicles with bad rods. The only thing Toyota wants to offer me is a platinum warranty-8yrs,125,000 miles. I haven't decided yet because I would like to know if there have been similar cases such as ours. Our local Toyota service department has been pretty good considering we did not purchase the vehicle locally.

Another Toyota recall??? my new 2010 Toyota Tundra with 2,500 miles had a catastrophic engine failure while driving on the freeway (the engine blew out on the truck). I was driving on the freeway when I heard a loud bang. I pulled over and engine oil was dumping out of the engine onto the ground. I had the truck towed to stevinson west Toyota - they took the engine apart and found multiple holes in the engine block. They are still not telling me the source of this engine failure. Toyota is telling me this is a one time occurrence, but I have been finding multiple problems with other Tundra's (2007-2010), including a USA today article from 2007, "Toyota fixing engine failures in new Tundra trucks. " and, while our truck has been in the shop, we spoke with another Tundra owner (2009; in the same shop) who had a similar issue. . Read more...
