38 Frame And Members problem of the 2001 Toyota Tundra

Failure Date: 06/01/2011

2001 Toyota Tundra brought to local Toyota dealership for concerns with rot holes through cross members that support gas tank. Received Toyota recall notice regarding cross meber at rear of vehicle supporting spare tire. Dealer states that recall does not cover failing cross members other than one supporting spare tire. Dealer recommends contacting Toyota directly and filing complaint. Contacted Toyota direct and was told they would only replace failing componet if ntsb forced them to even though thay are the same part, installed at the same factory at the same time and have the same problem. This is a safety issue!! this failing cross member is just as important if not more than the one Toyota is recalling. Isnt a falling fuel tank more of a safety concern than a falling spare tire??.

44 Frame And Members problem of the 2001 Toyota Tundra

Failure Date: 11/12/2010

Toyota's Tundra corrosion recall focuses on the frame, fuel tank mounting, and spare tire mounting hardware. If the frame has no perforations and the fuel tank suspension and spare tire mounting are sound, the truck is determined to be safe. My Tundra has been so inspected by a dealer, passed their test, and found to be "safe. ". My complaint is that the vehicle's undercarriage shows extensive corrosion of frame, steering, and suspension components beyond the scope of Toyota's recall. The extent of the corrosion is so great that it calls into question the potential for a suspension or steering component to fail during operation, leading to a loss of control and injury to passengers and others on the highway. I have digital photographs of several corrosion sites on the undercarriage of my truck that illustrate my concern. I have taken my truck to a body shop for evaluation and was told it is not safe. Toyota's recall does not address the full range of safety issues brought on by their corrosion problem. Toyota should be required to inspect all of the critical components subject to the excessive corrosion and either determine they are safe or repair them. If my digital photos would assist you in understanding my concern, I would be happy to forward them to you. Thank you!.

45 Frame And Members problem of the 2000 Toyota Tundra

Failure Date: 09/08/2010

The contact owns a 2000 Toyota Tundra. The contact stated that the vehicle was repaired under an unknown manufacturer's recall for potential frame corrosion. The contact was under the impression that the dealer would make repairs to the control arm, struts, and spring perch in addition to the frame. The contact stated that the frame was repaired at the manufacturer's expense but not the other components. The contact was charged for the repairs and stated that the manufacturer should have reimbursed him for the repairs. The manufacturer advised the contact that they would contact him with a decision but he had not yet been contacted. The failure mileage was 110,368.

46 Frame And Members problem of the 2002 Toyota Tundra

Failure Date: 08/31/2010

I noticed a leak in the differential of my 2002 Toyota Tundra. An independent mechanic verified my observation that the differential was rusted through. I contacted two Toyota dealers. Only one was responsive with the information that Toyota isn't going to pay for the repair. A search online reveals that my situation is not an isolated incident. I am stunned that no government agency involved in safety and consumer protection is on this. The truck has about 80000 miles on it. The body is excellent. The frame is fair and of course the differential/rear axle housing is dust. The vehicle is a potential road hazard and to protect ceo salaries possibly, there is a lack of government and corporate action--if there is any separation there. As evidenced by my situation and those of many others.

47 Frame And Members problem of the 2000 Toyota Tundra

Failure Date: 08/17/2010

The contact owns a 2000 Toyota Tundra. The vehicle was included in the recall under NHTSA campaign id number: 09v444000 (frame and members:underbody shields). The vehicle was taken to the dealer for inspection. The technicians stated the vehicle did not need the recall repair performed because there was no corrosion found on the cross member. After taking the vehicle to the dealer the contact noticed severe corrosion on the rear frame and coil springs. The vehicle was not taken to the dealer for diagnostic testing. The vehicle was not repaired. The approximate failure mileage was 100,000.

48 Frame And Members problem of the 2010 Toyota Tundra

Failure Date: 08/14/2010

Driving on the east 118 going on the 3rd lane just before desoto Ave. The truck starts to bounce violently. I was traveling at about 65 mph and moved to the number 4 lane, same thing--bed bounce was violent for about 2 miles. This is very dangerous because it felt like I had very limited control of the truck while bouncing. I haven't had a chance to look at the bed or the back of the cab to see if either was affected. This is not how a normal vehicle should operate.

49 Frame And Members problem of the 2003 Toyota Tundra

Failure Date: 07/22/2010

I have a 2003 Tundra access cab 4wd truck. Took it to the Toyota dealership for the rust recall inspection and to investigate oil leaking from the rear differential housing. Dealership said that the frame was fine but the cross members and tank supports need coating. They also advised that the rear differential housing was rusted to the point that oil is leaking and would have to be replaced. They said that Toyota is not responsible for the replacement of the rear axle housing. The vehicle has 108k miles. I can not believe that with all the known rust issues that Toyota will not stand behind this problem.

50 Frame And Members problem of the 2000 Toyota Tundra

Failure Date: 07/04/2010

The contact owns a 2000 Toyota Tundra. While driving approximately 50 mph, the power steering failed without warning. The steering wheel became increasingly difficult to steer. The contact moved the vehicle off the roadway and found that the power steering fluid was extremely low and refilled the fluid. The contact was able to locate a recall and believed the recall was associated with the failure he had experienced in the vehicle, stating that the power steering module possibly was affected by a defective frame (NHTSA campaign id number: 09v444000: structure: frame and members: underbody shields). The contact did not confirm if the vehicle was included with the recall. The contact stated the vehicle was previously at the dealer where unknown repairs were made to the vehicle. The contact had not experienced frame failure. The approximate failure mileage was 140,000 and the current mileage was 146,000.

He engaged the accelerator pedal and heard another loud noise and coasted the vehicle into a parking lot. The vehicle was towed to an authorized dealer. The dealer advised him that it would be 3 months before they could repair his vehicle because of the back log of recalls. The dealer performed the recall work on his vehicle on August 23, 2010; recall 09v444000, structure: frame and members:underbody shields. As he was driving from the dealership he engaged the brakes and the brake pedal went to the floor; he informed the service manager of the failure. The service manager advised the technicians to clean, adjust the rear brakes and relieve some tension on the parking brake cable. The following day the dealer advised him that the transmission was failing and needed to be replaced. The vehicle remained at the dealer waiting for the parts to be available. The failure mileage was 102,168 and the current mileage was 102,192.

54 Frame And Members problem of the 2000 Toyota Tundra

Failure Date: 05/21/2010

Whole bottom frame of truck is rotted. Took it to Toyota dealership to inspect for recall. They said nothing is wrong. Took it to another mechanic & he said vehicle unsafe to drive.

55 Frame And Members problem of the 2003 Toyota Tundra

Failure Date: 05/17/2010

On may 17, 2010 the spare tire fell off my 2003 Toyota Tundra while it was being driven down the street. Fortunately, the vehicle was being driven on a back road and no accident occurred as a result of the tire falling off. Part of the spare tire mount was still attached to the wheel after it fell off and you could see that the spare tire mount had extensive rust/rot. I was told that Toyota had a recall relating to excessive rust which could lead to the spare tire falling from the mount under the vehicle. On June 3, 2010 I took the Tundra to a local Toyota dealership service department and they inspected the vehicle. They told me that the vehicle passed their rust inspection so repairs would not be covered under the recall. When I reminded them that my spare tire fell off the vehicle they advised me that they could replace the rotted spare tire mount parts for $350. 00. On June 11, 2010 I contacted the national Toyota customer service center and was told that based on my vehicle's VIN I was not listed in their system as the owner of the vehicle. They advised that if I was not listed in their system I would have not gotten any recall notice. After updating the information I explained what happened with my vehicle and was first told that based on the VIN, my vehicle was not part of the recall. The person then said that the vehicle was included in the recall. I was then told that I would receive a telephone call from the local Toyota dealer within 3 days to schedule another service appointment. My concerns are that I am now being sent back to the same service center that first inspected it and passed it even though their invoice states "found carrier has rotted away from cross-member bracket that holds the tire" and it is obvious that the spare tire had fallen from the vehicle due to extensive rot.

56 Frame And Members problem of the 2002 Toyota Tundra

Failure Date: 05/04/2010

Severe corrosion of vehicle frame and frame cross members, front end parts, and attachment hangers to frame of 2002 Toyota Tundra which will result in eventually weakening and failure of the above mentioned items causing a possible accident, injuries and possibly death.

57 Frame And Members problem of the 2002 Toyota Tundra

Failure Date: 05/02/2010

Brought my 2002 Toyota Tundra to a dealer for the safety recall that I received. I was informed that the frame was ok, and the rear cross-member was ok too. Well, I received a call that the dealer had the part for me! I didn't order the part or did they tell me that the spare tire hanger was defective. It is part of the rear cross member assembly, and should be part of the re-call. They want me to pay for the part & labor to put it in, and the told me that it is not covered by the re-call. No offer was made by the dealer. . .

58 Frame And Members problem of the 2000 Toyota Tundra

Failure Date: 04/24/2010

On or about April 24th, 20010 my son was driving my 2000 Toyota Tundra pick up truck when the spare tire fell off the mount under the truck. I had been aware of some rust problems with this vehicle, however when I called my local Toyota dealer they said they were not doing much about this problem at this time, due to all the gas pedal problems they are currently having at Toyota. After bringing my truck home I looked underneath and saw a tremendous amount of rust. Even the crossmember that supports the gas tank appears very rusty and is of concern to me now. I won't fill my gas tank beyond half a tank anymore. I intend to go to the Toyota dealership and demand that they inspect my truck for safety reasons.

61 Frame And Members problem of the 2000 Toyota Tundra

Failure Date: 04/14/2010

My 2000 Toyota Tundra was in for a state inspection and failed due to the multiple cracks in the truck frame. 62 Frame And Members problem of the 2003 Toyota Tundra

Failure Date: 04/09/2010

The contact owns 2003 Toyota Tundra. The contact stated that the emergency brake rusted and snapped off of the frame. The brake was welded to middle of the cross frame right under the drivers seat. When the contact took the vehicle to the dealer, they were told that it could not be repaired, because they do not make the part to replace it. The manufacturer had an engineer look at the vehicle as well and they also said that there was nothing they could do. The contact stated that the piece that was connected to the cable holding the spare tire also rusted and broke off. The contact had to carry the spare tire in the back of the truck. The contact feels that this is the same is the recall campaign 09v444000 for the structure, which deals with the under body shields rusting. The manufacturer stated that his year, make and model was not included and cant be repaired. The failure mileage was 100,000 and the current mileages were 120,000.

63 Frame And Members problem of the 2000 Toyota Tundra

Failure Date: 04/07/2010

I learned on the Toyota website that my 2000 Toyota Tundra was recalled to check for severe corrosion of the rear cross member. My truck failed the test and I was told it was not safe to drive. The dealer provided a rental car but has no plan for repairing the Tundras or for compensating the owners. I was told the dealer would hold the Tundra until Toyota provides an answer.

64 Frame And Members problem of the 2000 Toyota Tundra

68 Frame And Members problem of the 2002 Toyota Tundra

Failure Date: 03/17/2010

My 2002 Tundra recall on the frame. Passed rear cross member inspection, however the rest of the under body is severally corroded. Dealership is telling me that the truck needs about $4500 to pass inspection? the front end is rusted out. As of now, my truck is still at dealership, waiting for Toyota rep to inspect my Tundra. 69 Frame And Members problem of the 2004 Toyota Tundra

Failure Date: 03/16/2010

I own a 2004 Toyota Tundra pickup truck. The bottom of the truck in the rear has rusted and the shock mount broke off. The piece that broke off also has the brake lines attached. This can potentially lead to the lines snapping and failing. I saw a recall on this for 2000 to 2003 years but not for 2004. The problem identified in the recall is the exact problem I am having. I am also concerned that the mount for the spare tire will continue to rust and fall off.
