Toyota Tundra owners have reported 5 problems related to manual transmission column shift (under the power train category). The most recently reported issues are listed below. Also please check out the statistics and reliability analysis of Toyota Tundra based on all problems reported for the Tundra.
Steering column shift bracket broke in 3 places when trying to shift from park to drive, making shifting impossible. See pictures from 2 of 3 fracture locations, 3rd fracture is at an attachment screw (not shown). This is cause by an punderdesigned part made of inferior cast aluminum. There are thousands of reports of this problem on Tundras and other Toyota models with same defective bracket. This dangerous defect must be recalled and fixed by Toyota with a redesigned part.

Automatic transmission column shift problem of the 2004 Toyota Tundra Toyota Tundra. There is a serious problem with the steering column housing support. After starting the vehicle and subsequently attempting to shift the gear into reverse , the gear shift lever broke free at the steering column. I was able to stop the vehicle. Able to park the vehicle, but was unable to shift into any other gear. The consumer stated it appeared the cast aluminum components supporting the transmission shift lever appeared to be flawed. There is only 81 thousand on this truck. Unsafe !!!!!!!!! thank god it didn't break at 65 mph ! but it could have !.

I have a 2011 Tundra sr5 with a loud clicking noise that has been coming from the steering column near the shift lever. While in park, the brake pedal must be pressed in order to shift the truck into gear. When I press the brake pedal, a loud click can be heard from the column shifter. This is the column shift lockout solenoid and is normal. However, recently I can hear the solenoid clicking anytime I depress the brake pedal while I'm in gear. Sometimes it is a click, two clicks and sometimes it is series of rapid clicks. I have taken the truck to the dealer twice. The first time I was told the clicking was normal while in park and that they could not duplicate it while in gear. The second time I took it to the dealer, they "blew out the excess grease" from the shift lock. Their best explanation is that the column shift lock solenoid comes from the factory as a sealed unit and is packed with grease. The 'excess' grease can keep the locking arm from fully retracking or engaging and the solenoid will chatter because it is trying to put it into position.

Column shifter overdrive on/off switch wire leads in 2004 Toyota Tundra fails or shorts out causing loss of control of overdrive setting on automatic transmission. This can cause downshifting at highway speed or your vehicle to not shift into overdrive causing poor fuel economy problem occurs after so many shift cycles of the column shifter from park to drive cause the wire leads to break from metal fatigue causing the failure or short in the switch my truck started this with about 123,000 miles on it. I found numerous posts on the web detailing the fix on this problem. Upon investigation I found the routing of the wires is causing the issue and you can see where Toyota has tried to tape the wires to give extra protection in a poor routing of the switch wires.
Initial symptom before failure - difficulty putting steering column shifter into forward gears and "clunky" rough shifting from drive gear (3rd) into automatic overdrive. Occurred periodically for 1 week prior to total failure of od. Toyota service department could not identify problem on 2 occasions in this period. Only after total failure and "idiot" light (check engine) came on was Toyota service willing to look internally, only to find metal shavings in the pan.
