38 Structure problem of the 2002 Toyota Tundra

Failure Date: 09/07/2012

I had recall for my Tundra bed and there were going to resolve the rust issue at no charge. I took my truck to bobby rehal Toyota in mechancisburg PA. They broke a part that wasn't part of the recall. They told me and if I wanted my truck back I had to pay for it. I tried to resolve with bobby rehal and Toyota main office and they told me to pay if I wanted my truck and the part they broke was not part of the recall. I explained I didn't need or want this recall but was told it was a no cost recall by letter. I paid it but now I just received another recall for airbag but how can I take my truck to Toyota not knowing the outcome of the recall so I may choose to do nothing because I cannot be sure they won't make me pay again for something I didn't want/need in the first place. Thanks.

42 Structure problem of the 2008 Toyota Tundra

Failure Date: 05/05/2011

Tl- the contact owns 2008 Toyota Tundra. The contact stated the vehicle was rear end and when it was repaired, the plug in used to haul a trailer no longer working properly. The parts used were Toyota parts. The design of the new plug is wider and it causes the electrical cable to hang further and the trailer lights to go in and out. The electrical cables will also pull out on their own causing the vehicle not to have electricity to the trailer being hauled. The contact has asked that the old design be put back on, but the manufacturer stated they no longer have the old design. This causes the trailer not to have tail lights or brake lights. The failure mileage and current mileages were 40,000.

46 Structure problem of the 2010 Toyota Tundra

Failure Date: 04/18/2010

I just purchased a 2010 Tundra two weeks ago. While on highway this truck shakes uncontrollably. It feels like it is bending in the middle between a cabin and a bed. While driving everyone in the truck keeps bouncing off the seat at times. If this was disclosed as "normal" as dealer says I would have never bought this truck. Also I noticed scratches started appearing on my truck and it has on 500 miles on it especial around door handles. I am afraid to wash it.

47 Structure problem of the 2002 Toyota Tundra

Failure Date: 03/17/2010

My 2002 Tundra recall on the frame. Passed rear cross member inspection, however the rest of the under body is severally corroded. Dealership is telling me that the truck needs about $4500 to pass inspection? the front end is rusted out. As of now, my truck is still at dealership, waiting for Toyota rep to inspect my Tundra. 49 Structure problem of the 2000 Toyota Tundra

Failure Date: 01/18/2010

To whom it may concern, I own a 2000 4x4 limited Tundra which has a rust problem. Most of the underside of the vehicle has heavy surface rust. It also has a front body mount that is rusted and corroded the medal is flaking and peeling away. I took the vehicle to a Toyota dealer for inspection. The dealer told me that the frame has no perforation holes in it. Nothing they can do. In addition to all the rust I had to replace rear brake lines and rear parking brake assembly on both sides do to rust and corrosion. I called Toyota corp to complain about these problems all they did was give me a case number. I also told them that the value of my vehicle has been compromised due to the rust . They will not do anything until holes are formed through the frame. I feel im caught between a rock and a hard place. Toyota did the right thing last year with the tacomas having rust issues but doing nothing for Tundra owners.

50 Structure problem of the 2000 Toyota Tundra

Failure Date: 12/28/2009

I purchased a 2000 Toyota Tundra with only 107k miles on the odo. This was just before Toyota announced a minor rust recall. I took the vehicle to the local Toyota dealership and to my surprise they told me that the entire frame was compromised. I have now been without a vehicle since the 28th of Dec because my low mileage truck was deemed unsafe for the road. Toyota has yet to offer a solution to this problem.

51 Structure problem of the 2003 Toyota Tundra

Failure Date: 11/24/2009

My 2003 Toyota Tundra is rusting away on the frame. The frame of my truck looks like it could bend, crack or brake at any time. This truck has been washed top and bottom at least once a month since it was new and all of a sudden I notice the entire under carriage is brittle and looks unsafe. I have loved everything about this truck but am now worried that it may become unsafe to drive.

52 Structure problem of the 2000 Toyota Tundra

Failure Date: 11/24/2009

On 24 Nov 09 Toyota issued a recall for 2000 Tundra pickups, regarding frame corrosion and particularly corrosion on the cross member that holds the spare tire. Although I read about this online, Toyota has yet to inform me by mail. On 24 March 2010 I took my truck in to berlin city motors in portland me for an inspection of this problem. They told me that my corrosion was not enough to warrant frame replacement, but that I would be notified of when to return for application of some sort of corrosion inhibiting gunk. Seven months later I heard nothing. I called Toyota customer services and began a complaint process. They said that they are still sending out recalls . . Almost a year later!!! they claim that they need info from the state of maine regarding legality of applying corrosion inhibiting gunk on safely, and they need "other" permissions. It is my opinion that Toyota is stalling on this fairly simple recall, hoping to reduce the problem by attrition of older vehicles. I would appreciate info from NHTSA as to why Toyota is being allowed to take this long on a project that isn't exactly rocket science. 56 Structure problem of the 2002 Toyota Tundra

Failure Date: 10/07/2009

Yesterday, had $1300. 00 work done on my 2002 Toyota Tundra. Mechanic advised me that my springs need replacement as they are completely rusted. This evening, susan wornick of channel 5 investigative team, did a report on Toyota Tundras rusting out. Specifically springs and frame. Ms. Wornick informed any owners of Tundras (2000-2001 and possibly 2002) to file complaint with NHTSA. Hence this email.

57 Structure problem of the 2006 Toyota Tundra

Failure Date: 07/01/2009

2006 Toyota Tundra sr-5 46k miles todate. Rain, everytime precipitation is experienced, vehicle has not been repaired. Rain leaks into passenger compartment around windshield. Complaints all over the internet for Tundra's tacoma's and rav4's. My problem began aprox 7/09 40,k miles. 58 Structure problem of the 2000 Toyota Tundra

Failure Date: 05/14/2009

I own a 2000 Toyota Tundra and was driving north on interstate 95 in maine. Without warning, the back end of the truck suddenly lifted up off the pavement while traveling at 65 mph. When I regained control of the vehicle, I looked into the rear view mirror to see a tire bouncing erratically across several lanes of northbound traffic. Cars were braking and swerving to avoid collision with the tire and fortunately it came to a rest against the median guardrail without crossing into southbound lanes and without damage to vehicles or injury to drivers. I immediately pulled into the emergency breakdown lane and inspected the truck to find that the spare tire was missing and a large corroded hole existed in the frame from which the tire had been mounted. I retrieved the tire and placed it in the bed. The following Monday I took the truck to the Toyota dealer where it was purchased to received an evaluation from a mechanic of what went wrong and if it can be repaired. The Toyota dealer claimed that they have been seeing significant frame corrosion of Toyota Tundra trucks of this model year, similar to that of tacoma's which had been recalled. They were unsure that the frame of my vehicle could be successfully repaired, due to the extensive corrosion and perforation. They did say that the vehicle could not pass a safety inspection regardless. It is clear that corrosion to this extreme extent on Toyota Tundra frames warrant attention from the NHTSA, due to the clear and present danger this defect poses to the traveling public. If spare tires fall from the frame mount in this manner, drivers of this model year Toyota Tundra and surrounding vehicles at the time of an incident of this nature are at extreme risk of severe injury and/or death. Toyota was contacted regarding this incident (case # 0905118853) and say that there is currently no program at present to recall any of the vehicles due to the currently low number of complaints.

59 Structure problem of the 2000 Toyota Tundra

Failure Date: 03/31/2009

2000 Toyota Tundra 62,000 miles. Locally driven. Frame ,cab and bed are severely rusted. The bed is covered with a tonneau cover and is rusting from the weld joints out. The " c" channel frame is perforated below the bed. Toyota states that it does not know of a problem with the Tundras, they just did a buyback program with the 1995-2000 tacomas for the same reason. Frames for both trucks are made in the states, does anyone see a connection? poor metal or prep?.

60 Structure problem of the 2008 Toyota Tundra

Failure Date: 12/22/2008

I just bought my 2008 Tundra and have noticed an incredible bounce while driving on the freeway. This does not seem normal and concerns me. The tires have been rotated and balanced and this doesn't seem to change the bounce effect. After reading online, it appears that Toyota is familiar with this problem. I hope they fix it soon. I have taken the cars to two dealerships and they said it was normal. I have own 4 Toyota trucks and none had this problem! I just hope that Toyota realizes that there is a major problem before an accident or death happens!.

61 Structure problem of the 2006 Toyota Tundra

Failure Date: 12/01/2008

2006 Toyota Tundra front end rusting out. 20,000. Miles on it. No salting on roads during winter in our area.

62 Structure problem of the 2008 Toyota Tundra

Failure Date: 09/13/2008

Paint on 2008 Tundra crewmax is terrible quality. "this is my first new vehicle purchase and I am for the most part very happy with my 08 pyrite mica crewmax purchase. My only problem with this truck is you got it, the paint job. Don't get me wrong its a beautiful color, but man is this paint fragile. I have 408 miles on this truck and have leaned against it a few times loading and unloading items from the side and have scratches that are very noticeable from brushing against the side with blue jeans. For a truck with a 44,000 msrp, you would think it would have a better quality paint job than this, this is bs. My 98 chevy original paint is much tougher than this. Toyota is going have to do better than this if they expect a repeat purchase from me. I realize certain chemicals have been banned from the painting process in the states, but we've got to do better with today's technology this shouldn't be happening. ".

63 Structure problem of the 2000 Toyota Tundra

Failure Date: 09/11/2008

The contact owns a 2000 Toyota Tundra. The vehicle was taken in for repairs and the technician observed that the rear subframe bracket was damaged, which could result in the vehicle turning over. The technician recommended that the vehicle be inspected at an authorized dealer. The vehicle was taken to the dealer and they stated that the subframe bracket was severely cracked. The warranty was expired and the dealer refused to repair the vehicle. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic and the failure was repaired. The contact has notified the manufacturer due to the safety risk involved. The failure mileage was 181,231 and current mileage was 182,000. Updated 11/24/08 spare tire carrier was severly rusted. Updated 11/26/08.

64 Structure problem of the 2000 Toyota Tundra

Failure Date: 09/11/2008

2000 Tundra having emergency brakes rusting all the time along with crank bell and rear diff. Housing.

65 Structure problem of the 2008 Toyota Tundra

Failure Date: 06/16/2008

I have owned my 2008 Toyota Tundra for 6 weeks now and love my truck!! the only problem is with the factory paint job. The paint on this vehicle scratches far too easy. If a hose rubs on it, or if someone's jacket rubs along the vehicle, it will scratch all the way down to the metal! I understand that this is a pickup truck, but Toyota should stand behind the quality of their work.

66 Structure problem of the 2000 Toyota Tundra

Failure Date: 04/20/2008

Late spring or early summer of last year I had been driving my family home from the grandparents. We felt a sound louder and problem worse than a pot hole. It was a normal road paved. It was in webster, MA. The truck seemed to be fine until late June the truck started to leak power steering fluid. Took it to the dealer (tri-state Toyota scion and Dodge). I explained the problem to the customer service lady. She told me about the rust problem they had with both the tacoma's and Tundra's and said the would check my truck out for frame corrosion. Without showing me they said there was none. Then proceeded to tell me the cost to fix this problem and was a ridiculous amount. It then got inspected by an autobody specialist. Precision auto repair look at it and said the frame is junk just like the tacoma's. I ask jim audett the owner for a preliminary estimate so I could send to Toyota. The power steering rack had broken away from the frame and chunk's of the frame (metal are falling off this truck). The integrity of this vehicle has been compromised by the corrosion and is not a road worthy vehicle. I spent $19,000 for this truck in early January 2007 about 14 moths before Toyota did the recall on the tacoma's. I have been given the run around by the dealer and Toyota for almost a year. I have subsequently taken and sent to attorney generals of both massachusetts and connecticut to inform them of this potential road hazard to all. It would be greatly appreciated if your agency could look into this because Toyota is reluctant to stand behind this poor quality vehicle. They have denied there was any corrosion. The pictures prove beyond a shadow of a doubt this is a manufacturers problem. . Read more...

67 Structure problem of the 2006 Toyota Tundra

Failure Date: 02/10/2008

Plastic cover on radio shattered and I am told I try to pry it off anyone can look at it and see that no marks to indicate it being pried it has shattered at first I thought it was tighten to tight and vibration caused it after learning how it is installed it is a defect in the material used.

68 Structure problem of the 2000 Toyota Tundra

Failure Date: 01/11/2008

Very concerned about the rust under my 2000 Toyota Tundra. It was inspected for the initial bed rust in Jan 08 by my local dealer after a local reputable body shop agreed with me that things were not right underneath. Dealer rep dismissed my concerns and did nothing. Now I'm reading about these things falling apart. The below incident date is the date of the inspection. I intend to have another inspection by the dealer I purchased the truck from in the near future.

69 Structure problem of the 2000 Toyota Tundra

Failure Date: 05/18/2007

We have a 2000 Toyota Tundra ,and the complaint is rust, first my bumpers went . ,the rear bumper got so rusted that my daughter sat on the bumper and she fell to the ground. , I called Toyota ,the said call my local dealer. ,I did. , my local dealer told me they couldn't do nothing about it ,they said it wasn't there problem . So at this point I never replaced the bumper because Toyota wanted 400. 00 without putting the bumper on and I can not afford that. Anyway who says a new Toyota bumper would be no good any ways! second and most important is the frame year after year after year. . . . . I tried to apply an undercoat to the frame and then the next year no matter how much under coating I put on the frame it gets like a 100 times worse I think the rust behind the under coating just breaks apart and just falls off as I drive because the year after the rust is 100 times worse!!!! if you would please . , look into this ASAP because im really scared to drive this truck, and I don't want to sell it to someone else because I would be afraid for them and feel terrible if something dangerous happened to us or them, please help! thank you.

70 Structure problem of the 2007 Toyota Tundra

Failure Date: 05/16/2007

I have a 2007 Toyota Tundra crewmax. When driving on concrete freeways the bed of the truck bounces very very bad worse than any other truck I have ever ridden in. I sometimes feel unsafe like maybe its bouncing so much that it could be dangerous if I need to stop suddenly. I don't think the tires come off the ground but the vibration is so bad that talking becomes difficult.
