Started hearing clunking noise in truck. Made appointment with ase certified mechanic and he asked us to come back to the shop. The structure of the frame that holds the rack and pinion steering and anti-sway bar mount was gone. Both of the tops of the frame of the cross member that goes under the engine was missing. The frame rail under the cab is separating. He advised that this condition was a massive safety issue and that I should contact Toyota and advise them. I called a dealership in zanesville and they advised they could not help because it was not a recall and Toyota gave me a case number and transferred me to someone else who told me they could not help me. He also got a second opinion from another individual who also said that this is a safety issue that should be addressed by the manufacturer. I have more photos and I now know I can not drive a truck that I spent $24,000 on June of 2019. I am glad I did not wreck my vehicle and hurt my family or anyone else because of this issue. Please help me repair my truck. When we purchased the vehicle the factory undercoating was still in tact and this was not visible underneath.

2 Sway Bar problem of the 2004 Toyota Tundra

All my front suspension components failed. I noticed that the frame had rusted through near the front wheel passenger side and has buckled and shifted as a result. My upper and lower ball joints and cv axle were damaged while my truck was in motion turning into the safeway gas station chester MD. February 9 of this year when the suspension failed to support the truck. The passenger side ball joint and cv axle were damaged. Tie rods and sway bar stabilizers were all worn and broken as well.

On January 10 2020 my 2006 Toyota Tundra broke down. I was driving home from work it was around 4:45pm when I heard a clunking noise coming from my drivers back tire, I pulled over and checked out underneath and my tires did not see anything got back in vehicle and backed it up to a side street it made the clunking noise. I called my husband he came out and checked the truck out too couldn't determine the problem. So we had it towed to a Toyota dealership ( we have towing service plus we bought a extended warranty) since it was pass 5 pm the dealership didn't look at the truck till the next day. When they gave me a call they told me that my sway bar broke and the clunking noise was my brake drum and pad it was so rusted it busted in pieces. He also said thats not the real concern & issue he told me that my whole frame was very rusted & corrosion he stated that my truck was very unsafe to drive. After work I went to the dealership and was in complete shock the frame was so bad some parts of it you could put your finger right through it. Later we did some research and read about Toyota Tundra recall on frames. We also went back to the dealership that sold the truck to us. They were no help. We are asking for help. I'm the main driver and I love this truck paid good money and still paying. I don't understand how this truck missed the recall in the pass. The truck is in excellent shape body and interior. It only had 91,000 when we bought it. Do we fall under the recall? please let us know what we need to do. Thank you.

4 Sway Bar problem of the 2005 Toyota Tundra

Failure Date: 09/04/2019

Frame has prematurely rusted resulting in the sway bar mounting bracket to break off. Frame is close to complete failure which would result in fuel and brake lines severing with catastrophic result.

5 Sway Bar problem of the 2006 Toyota Tundra

Failure Date: 08/04/2019

We had the truck inspected in June 2019 after just doing new break lines which rusted, we had also just put new tires on it. Truck passed inspection June 2019. Truck developed power steering leak in July. While looking into the leak we noticed the frame rusted and the anti sway bar is completely rusted off the frame. Can not trade this in or sell it now. Mileage 124k.

2003 Toyota Tundra. Consumer writes in regards to rust holes near front sway bar and left rear at shock mount. The consumer stated the vehicle was inspected for rust holes multiple time none were found, but the vehicle was previously treated for frame rusting.

7 Sway Bar problem of the 2004 Toyota Tundra

Failure Date: 09/01/2016

The contact owns a 2004 Toyota Tundra. The contact stated that there was an abnormal noise coming from the vehicle. It was taken to a dealer for a front end alignment and the mechanic indicated that the sway bar fractured from the frame. In addition, the mechanic stated that there was extensive rust on the sway bar and frame. The dealer indicated that the sway bar and the frame needed to be replaced. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and indicated that there was no recall to address the repair. The failure mileage was not available.

My 2006 Toyota Tundra double cab has significant rust, which has resulted in a crack along the frame rail approximately 6 inches long near the passenger side front wheel. The frame has numerous other holes opening up and significant flakes of steel falling of the frame in this same area. I have meticulously cared for this vehicle and have been sure to keep the car and frame clean, particularly during the harsh winter months. Nonetheless the frame has rusted to the point where the sway bar mount on the passenger side has almost rusted through. While Toyota initiated a "limited service campaign" this is not a full recall. I learned of this significant damage 26 days after the conclusion of the campaign on July 31, 2015. As this is not a recall, customers such as myself have no recourse. I contacted Toyota and was rudely informed that there are no exceptions and that my vehicle cannot be covered under the campaign as it has expired. This leaves me with significant damage as a result of Toyota's engineering error. Not only does this significantly reduce the value of my vehicle, but clearly poses a safety hazard as critical components of the front suspension are weakened. Furthermore, an accident could result in serious damage and injury as a result of the weakened structure. The fact that this has not been not been classified as a recall is appalling. Toyota is unwilling to stand behind their vehicles and has left me to fend for myself for their error. I strongly urge the NHTSA to reconsider their closed case on this frame issue and demand a recall. The measures Toyota has taken through this campaign are not sufficient. There are countless other owners whose frames only received the crc coating and have continued to rust. This was clearly a stopgap measure. Toyota should be held accountable for the safety hazard and economic impact of their design flaw.

I have recently received a frame recall notice due to excessive corrosion which I addressed at the local dealership. I was informed that the rust had not perforated the frame and that it would be treated to prevent further rusting. When I picked up the truck at the dealership the associate advised me that the recall was done and that a full safety inspection was completed which revealed no other problems. When I returned home I looked under the truck to inspect the frame and noticed that both sway bar links had corroded and broken off . I also subsequently took the vehicle to an alignment shop because I noticed the steering wheel was not straight and was told by the shop that the truck could not be aligned. I was told that the vehicle was very dangerous to drive and to bring it to the dealership immediately which I did. The dealership service department discovered that the steering shaft coupling was so corroded that they needed to replace it and do a wheel alignment. I am concerned that this may become a common safety issue with the Tundra which seems susceptable to excessive rusting and am requesting that this issue is investigated an a recall issued if necessary.

Noticed that vehicle was pulling to left. Check alignment ok. Noticed that sway bar link had snapped due to corrosion. Replaced with Toyota part and condition corrected.

Excessive rust throughout underbody and drive train components. Porous, rusted through differential now leaking oil. Rust issues started while vehicle still under 3/36 warranty. Belt tensioner bracket, bracket mount and ball joints at 33,921 miles, sway bar linkages rusted through at 45,168 miles. Both issued repaired as warranty matters. Toyota claims current problem not covered but admits defective material and offers to provide replacement parts only, requiring estimated $770 to complete the repair. Have initiated complaint with Toyota, file number available upon request.

I own a 2001 Tundra sr5 access cab trd pickup. I put 75,000 miles on it in through 8 ne iowa winters before moving to a warmer part of the country. My truck now has 132,000 miles on it. On August 17th, 2010 I drove through a pothole and heard a crack from the front left suspension. Upon inspection after work I found a busted left sway arm link. The link had rusted severely and sheared at the sway bar bushing location. I replaced the link myself with factory Toyota parts and torqued to factory specifications on August 22nd. I figure the new link will last at least as long as the previous one, but I'm guessing the right link is not in much better condition. Pictures and the what I have left of the old link are available. No injuries or significant damage occurred, but this could be a safety issue in certain conditions, and probably should be subject to a recall.

13 Sway Bar problem of the 2008 Toyota Tundra

Toyota Tundra 2008 trd rear sway bar failure - rear trd sway bar assembly hardware on 2008 Tundra is actually cracking and causing a dangerous situation and bending the rear brake line to the point that if I had not caught the problem my rear brakes would have failed. I was under my truck doing a general inspection and noticed that my left rear trd bilstien shock was leaking. I contacted Toyota and told them about the problem and without hesitation they ordered the part without even seeing the truck. Unfortunately when I took the truck in Toyota had ordered a standard shock and not a bilstien shock, so I picked my truck back up from them until they got the correct part. A few days latter I noticed a knock coming from my truck and when I had isolated the knock I identified it as the left strap on my trd sway bar kit. What I concluded is that the left rear shock leaking caused too much travel. The extensive travel of the shock caused too much stress on the strap of the sway bar kit and in-turn the strap failed and split in half exposing the rubber bushing (I have pictures of this). I called Toyota and informed them of the problem and talked to walter yamamoto the service writter at piercy Toyota of milpitas California. I told walter that the sway bar was pressing on the rear break line and had bent it upwards and was now leaning against the rear break line. At no time did walter advise me to take the truck in to the service department. I finally got to scared to drive the truck and took it too Toyota and advised them that it was to much of a safety issued to continue to drive the truck. I asked walter to take a look at the sway bar and he saw the issue. I had contacted a couple of other people that confirmed the same thing had happened to their trucks, but when I asked walter if this had happened to anyone else he replied "no". This is a serious problem for Toyota because they have sold many of these sway bar kits to Tundra owners form 2007 to present.

14 Sway Bar problem of the 2002 Toyota Tundra

I have owned a 2002 Toyota Tundra 4x4 since 2002. In July of this year I experienced a near wreck when I hydroplaned and was unable to regain control. When I tried to gain control I felt as if the truck was going to roll and I was forced to drive off the highway. Although I did not collide with anything I did have some damage to the rear axel with noises coming from it. The next day I took the truck to a local garage to inspect the vehicle and they found nothing. Not stopping there I crawled under and I found a broken link bolt on the right front sway bar. Upon inspection of the link bolt I found that the link had rusted to less than half of it's original diameter which lead to its failure. Taking this issue up with a Toyota dealer I had them repair both sides of the sway bar links. When the left link was removed it too was found to be broken. The design of the links are such that water and road salt can settle in the bushings causing them to rust. The broken links are likely why I was unable to regain control of my vehicle and caused damage to the rear end gears and axle. I have had this vehicle in for safety inspections on numerous occasions and nothing was found to be wrong. If professional technicians can't detect this problem than how can an owner and how can these owner's feel safe with these undetectable problems. I have saved these parts and feel that they are worthy of closer inspections.

15 Sway Bar problem of the 2000 Toyota Tundra

2000 Toyota Tundra. I have just had to replace broken leaf springs for the second time. I have also had to replace both sway bar links (rusted off). Have extensive corrosion on the frame, especially in rear. Vehicle is in good shape other than the frame and underbody corrosion issues.

16 Sway Bar problem of the 2002 Toyota Tundra

Front drivers side sway bar link is corroded through. No accident or injury but only because I knew what was going on after I saw the broken link and drove accordingly. After further investigation we find that the brake calipers are corroded beyond salvage and the frame has heavy rust in a number of areas. It is clear that this truck will be worthless in a few years due to the heavy corrosion and we will all be lucky if someone is not killed due to corrosion damage causing something to fall off and cause a wreck.

I am writing on my 2000 Toyota Tundra. I just noticed the recall due to rust found on the rear frame. I also would like to alert you rust found on the front suspension joints. I just replaced my front sway bar links due to rust. The links snapped off and this caused the truck to lean more in the turn or cause more body roll. This I believe is safety issue because if you need to perform and emergency maneuver this could cause the truck to loose control. While I was under the truck repairing the links I did notice a lot of rust in the front suspension that looks like it could fail. The upper control arms have heavy amounts of rust. I did not look at the spare tire bracket as mention in the recall but I have notice the rust in rear section of the frame. The location both shocks have heavy rust at their points of attachment as well as the break line holders. I hope you find this information helpful feel free to contact me with any question.

2004 Toyota Tundra double cab sr5 with 54000 miles- front swaybar links breaking. I just brought my truck into the dealership for an oil change and both front sway bar links are broken. Looking on a couple of sites, this appears to be a common problem. The truck is factory original and is a personal vehicle, not used for off road travel.

Excessive rust. Sway bar ends links rusted off. Power steering rack rusted thru and leaked needed replacement. Exhaust header leak because of rust. Several tech's have called it a 'rust bucket' underneath.

I pulled out of my driveway and heard a thump, stopped, got out of my truck,and checked to see what happened. I found the top portion of my front sway bar (linkage) in the road. It had rusted away between the two rubber bushings, (on the passenger side). If I had been driving down the road, I would never have noticed this had happened. . . Isn't the sway bar a needed component in the handling of any vehicle?.

The contact owns a 2000 Toyota Tundra. The brake lines were repaired at the owners expense about 5 years ago. Recently he noticed the brake light warning light illuminated on the instrumental control panel. The vehicle was taken to the dealer and the frame along with the brake lines were replaced because of corrosion. The failure mileage was 50000. The current mileage was 74000. Updated 11/04/09. The sway bar link was replaced. Updated 11/06/09.
