I am the 2nd or 3rd third owner, and I should have checked this car out further, since whomever ('s) sold it too me didn't tell me a damn thing was wrong with the car. I am so disgusted about this incident of buying basically a lemon from dishonest creeps. I only drove it once before I handed over every hard earned penny I had saved over such a lengthy time due to the fact I am a struggling single mother. I don't get child support nor welfare, thank you! I paid all I had literally ever saved up ever in my whole life. (yes I am that poor to be quite frank) I paid $4500 for a 2001 vw new Beetle. I have always only ever heard excellent things of vw's, there for I just pray and wish that vw would help!!!!!!!!!!!! now I am without transportation to get to and from work, as well as my children to and from school. I can't even drive to get groceries or anything! help!! why can't vw at least pay to have it fixed? I am just to poor. I am looking into a law suit. Dishonest vw, why can't you just be honest and fix your error and wrong doing? they sell these Beetles knowingly to innocent trusting families, single moms, etc: etc;, and that alone I believe should be grounds enough for a hell of a law suit. They knowingly put women, children, and innocent people's lives in serious danger with no conscience what so ever. Buying a vw is like playing russian roulette. For you, your children, your family, loved ones and friends. Hell even innocent by standers and passer byes. Fix my Beetle evil creeps. May god deal with you eventually either way amen!.

I bought a vw diesel due to the performance and lack of impact on the environment, only to discover that I was sold a vehicle that harms the air. I'm a retired firefighter with 31 years of service with the city of stockton and I'll be turning 65 this year but now I find out that my " last " car isn't what I thought that I was buying and now I don't know if the issue with be resolved, I'm not sure if I should be driving my vehicle without knowing if it's fixable and what to do if I decide to try and trade it in for a different vehicle. I had some trips planned but I cancelled them, due to the distance, which may affect not only the air but the value of the car.

My daughter was driving her Beetle down a city street when it was stopped going like it was in neutral even though she was in drive. She coasted into a parking lot and turned off the car and waited. She then tried again and it was working. We took it to the dealer ship they said the transmission needs replaced it is testing with a transmission failure on 4th and 5th. It is drivable but we will not risk her life or take a chance that it will stop moving again while driving down the road. We bought this car used 5 months earlier the car fax said it was excellent and had all maintenance up to date.

My daughter was driving her 2003 vw Beetle on the highway and noticed that she was having an issues with her rpm's reving very high. She pulled off the highway and shut the car off and restarted it after awhile. She got back on the highway and continued to drive home, her speed was roughly 65. All of a sudden her vehicle dropped her speed down to 50 causing her to almost be rear ended on the highway. This has happened at least 3 times. As she is away at college so her car is not driven much, so we are unsure if this is a constant issues. This is a safety issue with the vehicle and was taken to a car repair shop and we where told the transmission is having issues.

I am the third owner and I should have cked this car out since the person who sold it too me didnt tell me a thing about the car. I am so dicusted about this adorable looking car. I only drove it once and took it too our mechanic. Wished I had taken it there first$800. 00 later and just the beginning! I paid too much to begin with. Ipaid $4500 for a 2003 vw because it was cute! so I wish vw would help us american people. I want to drive my car but have only driven it once. ! help !! still at the mechanics! wish people could be honest ! this would not happened in the 60"s . We have a good mechanic! thank god!.
I just bought a Volkswagen new Beetle, 03. The smell makes me physically ill to be in it. The day after I bought it, I had the cabin filter changed and it still smells. This smell is a chemical smell and my throat started hurting and swelled up. I saw a doctor and she could not identify the problem but added that my throat was filled with puss. I stopped driving it and asked my husband to drive it. He is now complaining that he is having headaches and having new allergies after just one week. We called vw who said it was a rust proofing material that they used to put on the car and that nothing could be done. But I have been reading many websites that say it is a parafin sound proofing mat under the carpet. This material is being removed by vw for some people after contacting NHTSA. There are many posts online concerning this chemical smell (like burned crayons). I am concerned for my family's health. I have 3 kids who have to ride in the car as well. I want vw to remove the parafin sound proofing mat at vw cost.
When gearing down or starting up at redlight, car downshifts and gears-up with a jerk; took to vw dealer; says it is valve body defect which could utimately cause transmission to go bad; was told at dealership vw knows about the problem and extended a warranty on valve cover only which went out last yr on my vehicle. I never got a notice. Vw admits the problem was there when manufactured in mexico. I believe that this could be a safety issue for many vw owners. Also have had numerous problems with window regulators malfuctioning - affecting locking of doors and window closings- even when these costly regulators are replaced, the problems return. . . My car value is now -0- thanks to vw manufacturing issues.

My car was purchased as a used car. I purchased it with 100000 miles (approx. ), and I have put on 31000 additional miles since (within 5 years). My car has always been routinely maintained/serviced. I take excellent care of my Beetle. In November 2013, my automatic transmission began to slip. It has become worse, and it lurches forward will in drive, and at a controlled intersection my car either hesitates to take off or it rocks back and forth. This is a very expensive fix, having consulted two mechanics and receiving their estimates. I feel that this transmission issue poses a safety hazard for myself, other drivers, and pedestrians who may be crossing in front of my lurching vehicle. I think that with the multitude of 2003 transmission issues/failures, vw needs to stand behind their faulty product with a recall.
My car was fine and it started running a lil funky so I took it to get a diagnostic test and turns out there is a recall on my air bags ! transmission and body valve ? it absolutely doesn't want to go in reverse anymore and I barley bought the car in July of 2012 and this incident happens just 5 months later. Very disappointed please help I am a working nursing student that still makes payments on this car. I know my rights and I feel you can help me out please and thank you. ## VIN failed ##.
Newly purchased vehicle that has a know issue. The tiptronic automatic transmission slips during gear changing. Vw refuses to fix the issue because it is out of the 4 year warranty but the vehicle has less that 50000 miles. There is a know issue for this but I will have to pay $6500 for the repairs>??? not fair for new buyers who are kept in the dark about a know issue. .
I own a 2003 vw new Beetle convertible with an automatic tiptronic transmission. Recently , at random times, when shifting between 3rd and 4th gear the engine would rev up past 4000 rpm and jump into gear. Essentially a very hard shift. With plans to keep this vehicle for many years to come, I immediately took the vehicle to a trusted mechanic. After test driving and experiencing the "hard shift", I was informed that it was most definitely transmission related, however, only vw can access the transmission due to the fact that it is completely sealed. The vehicle was taken to a david maus Volkswagen of orlando for the diagnostic. I was informed that the transmission was "coming apart from the inside" and that it was a "ticking time bomb". Because the vehicle is over 100000 miles , it does not fall under the transmission valve body recall. The repair cost for a new transmission is $6000. 00. I feel that this is gross negligence on the part of Volkswagen of America, to knowingly place this vehicle with such a major defect on the marketplace. I now have an unusable hunk of scrap metal sitting in my garage for fear of the time bomb under the hood. I refuse to drive this car and potentially put others lives at risk. Volkswagen needs to be held responsible for knowingly putting a car with such a major defect on the road.
Car was shifting very hard, tires would squeal as shifting between 1-2 and 2-3rd gears. To replace the transmission it will be between 2-5000. 00 dollars we have had to replace window regulators, thermometer.
Erratic shifting up and down between 1st and 3rd gears. Car lurches to the point that a natural reaction is to relieve your foot from the brake which could cause a rear end collision in some cases. Problematic part is internal valve body which is a known problem with vw's of this make and model. We had the problem fixed then called vw customer care to see about reimbursement and were told that an extended warranty was issued for 7 years or 2010. Since my car had low mileage the intication occurred outside of warranty and I was told by vw that it is now my problem to take care of it to the tune of $2300 parts and labor. Incidentally, I also did not receive the warranty as I was told it would have gone to the original owner anyway. Considering this is a known issue and acknowledged by vw to be problematic up to 70,000 miles I feel that vw should offer up compensation in that it is their faulty part. Any help in recouping costs incurred to fix this problem would be appreciated.
The 2003 vw Beetle has started to slip at 96,500 miles going from 2nd to 3rd gear. I have done alot of online research and there are several forums and thousands of similar cases as the one I am having. I called vw of America customer care and talked to tim and he said because the car was out of warranty they could not do anything. I mentioned that the problem seems to be the valve body and he agreed but still could not help me. Further research led to me finding a class action suit agains vw America for exactly this problem. Since there are so many documented cases, I feel there should be a recall immediately as this can lead to a serious safety issue on the road. Worse yet, vw knows about it and is not doing anything! please help. ## VIN passed ## vw Beetle 2003 ##.
The automatic transmission shifts gears erratically. The transmission shifts cause erratic engine speed during shifts resulting in tires breaking traction and unpredictable acceleration. Driving in traffic is hazardous due to sudden or delayed gear shifts in the automatic transmission. Volkswagen America has extended the warranted period for the transmission valve body due to known defects in the transmission system. Failure in the transmission valve body produces erratic driving characteristics and poses a risk to persons and property.
Automatic transmission has problem and sometimes while driving does not advances, this could be a safety issue.
Ever since we purchased our used 2004 Beetle converitble, the transmission has been a problem. When shifting from 1-3 gears the car jumps and halts. It is horrible. We had the trip tron switch replaced and still no help. I was informed by the mechanic that this is a problem with these cars from 2003 to 2008. A new transmission is over $6000. Apparently, it has to be replaced.
This car was purchased new and within three months had to have the transmission replaced under warranty. Recently it started to lurch at stops and starts, and the diagnosis was a failed valve body on the transmission. The transition company referred me to websites where there are multiple complaints for this exact problem with this model. I called Volkswagen in mi and was told there had been a warranty extension, of which I was not informed, but that it would not apply to me now. It appears to me that the frequency of this problem warrants a look at this model and its transmission. The dealer warned my transition specialist that the repair which has been frequent only works about 50% of the time. I asked if it is safe to drive as is and was warned only for short distances. It appears to e that this should have triggered a recall or a class action suit.
Recall on airbag crash sensor back in 2008, which we had replace . However this problem constantly happen were the air bag crease sensor lights comes on and stays on. When you call the dealership they wants to charge the consumer. There is always a jerking in the power transmission while driving . This is dangerous you would think the car is going to stop going up hill. I made a complaint back in 2009 complaint #102868 never received a response.
The contact owns a 2004 Volkswagen Beetle. While traveling 30 mph, the vehicle became resistant to acceleration attempts and the vehicle could not be shut off. The vehicle was taken to the dealer where the contact was informed that the valve body needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The current mileage was 64,000 and the failure mileage was 53,000.
The contact owns a 1998 Volkswagen Beetle. The contact stated that while driving 55 mph, the temperature light began beeping, then suddenly stopped beeping and a red light began flashing. The contact noticed a thump under the accelerator pedal so she stopped the vehicle on the left side of the highway. She attempted to drive the vehicle to the right side, but the vehicle would not start, so she coasted over to the right side of the highway. When the hood was opened, there were flames erupting and the entire vehicle was engulfed in flames. The vehicle was destroyed. The fire department was called but no report was filed. The manufacturer had not been notified. The VIN was unavailable. The current and failure mileages were approximately 136,000.

The first time I drove my used over 50 mph along coastal road (within 24 hours of purchase from a Toyota dealer), the engine cut power and rolled to a stop. From first gear, it began to drive again. I took the car to the dealer and they determined that the valve body was defective. I am scared to drive the car over 55 on the freeway for fear of cutting power. In August 2011, the same cut of power occurred after driving 4 miles in the far right lane on the 405 freeway. I rolled off the freeway offramp and came to a stop. The transmission reset itself and drove up to 40 mph to my destination on side streets. Again the dealer accused the valve body. In July 2012, I decided to let the dealer check the car out again because I had a strange cut in power upon acceleration from a left turn traffic light the previous day. The dealer determined that my fuel pump was defective. After these three fixes, I trust the car to drive around town. But I suffer extreme anxiety about driving the car on a freeway. This week, I need to move the car from California 300 miles to nevada. I am not certain if the transmission can drive that distance without a cut in power. Not dependable, not worth $15,000 price tag. Embarrassment!.
My son was driving our 2000 vw Beetle on the westbank expressway in new orleans, he heard a loud pop, and the car started to fill with "white smoke", he pulled over immediately, and turned the engine off. Within minutes, the car was on fire. This came without warning, we did not have any issues with the car prior to yesterday, 7-17-10.

I read the recall announcement in the paper (NHTSA 17v-509, vw 20ae) regarding the fuel pump cut out. I have complained to vw a number of times over the years that my vw engine stops when driving between 55 and 65 mph. The service writers response was that the fuel pump needs to be replaced - a $1000 item. Other mechanics that I've asked have said that if that was the case the engine would not get fuel and not work and that it was probably something else. When I read the symptoms reported in 20ae, they were exactly what I have experienced many times, but not consistently. At 65 mph when the engine cuts out, the deceleration is almost immediate to 50 mph. The symptoms started about 8-10 years ago. I have not driven the car on the freeway since because I was nearly run over by a cement truck. The article I read said that no known crashes or injuries were caused by the problem. Please consider expanding the investigation to include the 2001 new Beetle to see if there were any serious injuries due to this issue. I believe my issue is exactly the same as the issue reported in the press.
The contact owns a 2000 Volkswagen Beetle. The contact stated that the engine warning indicator remains illuminated on the instrument panel. A diagnostic was performed, which produced "error code 5". A mechanic repaired the vehicle and reset the computer; however, the indicator continues to illuminate. The current and failure mileages were 126,000. Updated 02/24/09. Updated 02/26/09.
The fuse box atop the battery melted on 2/18/2009 causing a fire in the engine compartment. Repairs including new fuse box and other damaged parts cost me $1500. 00. On 7/15/2011 the fuse box melted causing a/c to stop working. The outside temperature at the time was in the high 90's during a prolonged heat wave in the north east. Cost to repair $400. 00. On 5/18/2014 once again the fuse box melted, cost to repair and replace $700. Two days later the repair (5/20/2014) the car went dead in traffic caused by a drained battery cost of towing $150. 00 + new fuse box melted. In checking vw owners forums available on the internet, this is a common problem and complaint (fuse box melting) in the vw product line. Why hasn't vw been fined and ordered to recall their defective cars?.
2003 Volkswagen Beetle began to spark while driving. Consumer stated that she pulled over and then it caught fire. The fire started in the engine compartment. Ohio traffic crash report # 10-91-0903.
The top of the oil dipstick on my 2001 vw Beetle is apparently very fragile and could come off by itself, possibly lodging itself into another part of the motor and causing a dangerous situation. It disappeared during preventive maintenance at dover Volkswagen, inc. In dover, delaware. They claimed they did not break it.
Since I purchased my Beetle in 2001, it has been an ongoing money drain. In 6 yrs. I have replaced the manual transmission twice, had the brakes worked on a number of times, been unable to open the gas "door" on the car w/ the gas cap latch, had to replace the hood opening latch, had repeated electrical failures, problems w/ front & rear light wiring, had door locks/alarm fail & subsequently had my laptop stolen from the car, the radio has not worked for 1+ year, & it's cover panel is loose & falling back into the dash, the rear-view mirror switches have failed, the power window switches have had to be replaced, the drivers side door fell off (!) of its top hinge when the hinge broke while opening the door normally at a gas station, the air compressor has failed many times, the a/c is currently not working, the drivers side door lock fell out of the handle(!!!!), the catalytic converter has been replaced twice, & the list goes on. Currently I have not been driving the car for several wks b/c though only a week or two out of the shop, again it is having transmission problems. I am at my wits end with this car & having recently graduated from college, am not in the greatest position to have to buy a new car. Moreover, I am so displeased w/ the car that I would literally feel guilty about trading it in to be sold to some other unsuspecting person. Vw should be so ashamed of themselves, & should be reimbursing owners of the 1998 Beetle in full for all of the strife & trouble that they have caused. In fact, after writing this & realizing how many problems this car has had, I may try to take legal action - this is totally unacceptable! finally, our local vw dealer is terrible, keeping my car for wks. Longer than expected, one time leaving a candy bar stuck to my passenger side seat!!!, and acting like they could care less about the poor quality of their products & labor.
This is my second vw Beetle turbo that has an engine that has died below the recommended mileage for maintenance. Both vehicles did the same thing and died while I was driving on a highway at 75 miles per hour. I lost power and was not able to use my breaks to pull over for safety. After contacting vw customer service (800 882 8987 ref# 60353557 9-29-06) I was informed, "the vehicle is no longer under warranty even though the damage occurred below the recommended service". My current mileage is 73k and my current mechanic informed me that the usual mileage for this type of problem is 105k. After some research I have found that this is not a unique issue and Volkswagen is more than aware of this defect. It is ridiculous that they think they should not be responsible.
The driver was sitting at an intersection another vehicle rear ended the driver. The driver hit the vehicle in front without warning the vehicle caught fire. No injuries to report. The fire department was called out to extinguished out the fire. The vehicle was towed and totaled out by the insurance company. Please provide additional information. Updated 04/19/06.

After parking the vehicle, within 15 minute or less the vehicle caught on fire under the hood. The local fire department arrived on location to extinguish the fire. The dealer and the manufacturer were both notified. The cause of the fire was still undetermined.
