4 Timing Tensioner problem of the 2012 Volkswagen CC

Failure Date: 03/15/2019

The 2. 0t tsi engine was made with a faulty timing chain tensioner which will fail and cause the timing chain to break causing immediate catastrophic engine damage putting the driver and occupants in danger because of loss of power and difficulty steering. I am extremely blessed that I noticed the car was acting funny and exited off the highway. It's ridiculous to me how the timing chain could cause that much damage to the engine. The engine obviously has been created with a faulty design, so now I'm expected to pay to replace a faulty engine with another faulty engine. It's extremely upsetting that after I sent my vehicle in for issues with a recall, fuel pump, that my vehicle would just self destruct like this.

5 Timing Tensioner problem of the 2011 Volkswagen CC

Failure Date: 11/07/2018

Tl the contact owns a 2011 Volkswagen Cc. While driving approximately 25 mph, the vehicle began to hesitate. The vehicle was taken to dublin Volkswagen (6085 scarlett court, dublin, CA 94568) where it was diagnosed that the timing chain tensioner failed and needed replacement. The same dealer repaired the vehicle in 2015, 2016, and 2017 for the same failure. The vehicle was not repaired for the recent failure. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 194,000.

6 Timing Tensioner problem of the 2012 Volkswagen CC

Failure Date: 07/23/2018

Vehicle has 47500 miles and all services are done at scheduled intervals. Was informed that the lower timing cover & tensioner need replacement along with upper timing cover & cam girdle. Cost is over $2000. This should not be defective with this many miles.

7 Timing Tensioner problem of the 2010 Volkswagen CC

Failure Date: 07/07/2018

After being parked in the driveway overnight the car would not start. It was towed to the dealer who diagnosed a slipped timing chain. An internet search revealed this to be a common failure with this engine due to a faulty design of the belt tensioner.

8 Timing Tensioner problem of the 2011 Volkswagen CC

Failure Date: 06/23/2018

Vw & Audi timing chain tensioner defect class action lawsuit. Engine failed due to timing chain tensioner defect. The vehicle was stationary. Went to start vw Cc and it had a delayed or slow crank. When the engine started it was vibrating like crazy. Had the car towed to the dealer and a few days later was told that it was the timing had slipped due to the tensioner. I did some research and found out about the class action lawsuit. According to the information presented on carcomplaints. Com several bulletins in regards to this issue where sent to the dealers service departments and of course the service manager that I am dealing with has no knowledge of such an issue and has worked at the dealership for many years and it would cost $3000 - $9000 depending on engine damage but most likely need a new engine. The information also states that this could and does happen when the vehicle is moving which could prove to be very dangerous. This needs be investigated and the simple fact that dealers, service departments and vw call center personnel are not aware of this issue and basically deny any kind of liability is extremely unjust.

9 Timing Tensioner problem of the 2009 Volkswagen CC

Failure Date: 04/30/2018

2009 vw Cc, timing chain tensioner causes timing chain to slip. . . Vw repeatedly told me the timing chain lasts the life of the car and there is no maintenance guidelines for the timing chain. They fail to advise/disclose/or suggest the tensions should be checked at any point. I have owned the vehicle since 2011 and have asked repeatedly during servicing for timing to be checked or if it needs to be checked and dealer never suggested that the tensioners should be checked as supposedly the timing chain should last life of the car. I took my car in today because the check engine light has been on every since they changed the spark plugs in my car and was told it will be $5300 to fix but suggested I just get a new motor. Why buy a used motor if this issue can happen again. Vw is aware of the tensioner failure and fails to even disclose to consumers that the tensioners should be checked in any routine maintenance or preventative maintenance schedule. It is implicity stated that the timing chain lasts the life of the car but knowingly and willfully fail to disclose that the operable parts the control the timing chain can and due fail resulting in extensive damage to the vehicle. My was taken in for routine maintenance and check engine light was on. If my vehicle had been in motion and the tensioner fails, the motor will immediately fail and coupd result in serious accident.

10 Timing Tensioner problem of the 2012 Volkswagen CC

Failure Date: 04/16/2018

On 4/16/18 I was on my way to lunch, I pulled up to an intersection where the lights were flashing. When it was my turn to go, I pushed on the gas pedal and my car died that's when I noticed my car was stalled. Luckily, two gentlemen stopped and pushed out of the way while I was getting ahold of my husband. When my husband arrived we were able to get the car safely off of the road and to his office (which is about a 1/2 mile from where I was). However, when he went to leave later that afternoon my car wouldn't not start but still had power to everything (radio, windows, door locks, seats, etc. ). We had to have the car towed to a mechanic where it was determined that the car suffered "catastrophic engine failure" at no fault of my own. It was determined that the engine did not fail due to neglect. Something inside the engine broke - we believe it was the timing chain tensioner. My mechanic has quoted me on 4/27/18 with a quote of almost $10,000 to replace my engine. This quote is for a used engine with 70,000 miles and who's to say that it won't happen again. My current engine has roughly 86,000 miles on it. I have contacted vw and they said there is nothing they can do for as it's outside the warranty of the drivetrain. After doing some research it seems that vw knows about this situation and is still not willing to help.

11 Timing Tensioner problem of the 2012 Volkswagen CC

Failure Date: 03/28/2018

My 17 year old son was driving my 2012 Volkswagen Cc on Wednesday, March 28th around 9 pm when he came up to a red light on a city street and stopped. He thought the car engine stalled. However, the engine died. He was not able to restart the engine and had to push the car out of the roadway into a nearby restaurant parking lot. He called me and explained what happened. We left the car parked overnight and had to car towed to our local dealership the next morning. The dealership called me on Friday afternoon to inform me that the timing chain broke in the engine and the engine is shot. My Volkswagen Cc has approximately 146,500 miles on it. I have always brought it in for service to boardman Volkswagen and I even asked the service advisor one time if the "timing belt" needed replaced on that car because they had a coupon that they would hang on the rearview mirror for a 15% off discount. A service technician was walking through the service desk area when I asked the service advisor about the timing belt, and the service technician said "you own the Volkswagen Cc that I just did the oil change on, correct?. " I said yes, and he said "you have a timing chain in that car, so you don't have to ever change the belt, it doesn't have a timing belt". I said ok and thought that I was good. Well, after doing some research now after my engine failure, it seems that a lot of Volkswagen owners with 2. 0 liter engines have a similar problem as I do. I found online that the timing chain tensioner seems to be faulty in many cases and Volkswagen does not want to issue a recall because it would be too costly. I now have to pay anywhere from $4000 to $6000 for my engine to be replaced. I don't believe that a chain in the engine should break unless it was defective. In which case, Volkswagen should be willing to cover the cost of the repair.

12 Timing Tensioner problem of the 2012 Volkswagen CC

Failure Date: 03/16/2018

Tried to start the car and the timing chain tensioner faulted causing the valves to break. The vehicle was turned off parked on a city street and not in motion.

13 Timing Tensioner problem of the 2009 Volkswagen CC

Failure Date: 02/17/2018

Timing chain tensioner gave out on highway. Major damage to engine. Safety issue on highway.

14 Timing Tensioner problem of the 2010 Volkswagen CC

Failure Date: 02/10/2018

My timing belt tensioner broke causing my timing belt to break which in turn caused my engine to stall and die as I was turning in a residential area. I lost all compression in cylinders 2,3, and 4. I was told by a mechaninc I would need to have the entire engine replaced and was quoted $8000. 00 to get it fixed. I have had this car for 2 years and it has less than 100,000 miles on it and I still owe close to 12,000 grand on the car. To my knowledge this is a fairly common issue with this vehicle and that Volkswagen hasn't placed any recall or updated the part. I am just thankful that I wasn't on the highway or on a busy street because it could have put my life and the life of others at risk.

15 Timing Tensioner problem of the 2009 Volkswagen CC

Failure Date: 01/17/2018

Timing chain tensioner gave out during start up in the garage causing damage to valves and extensive costly repairs to the cylinder head. Luckily it did not happened on the highway, could have complete loss of steering.

16 Timing Tensioner problem of the 2010 Volkswagen CC

Failure Date: 01/12/2018

After getting to the 100,000 mile marker. My car begin to have a rough idle from the engine bay that could also be felt from within the car. I then took my car to the dealership in which they said it was misfiring and needed new spark plugs and coils. After paying for that I pick my car up from the dealership only to find out the engine light came back on once getting home. A couple weeks after that my engine started misfiring yet again we're even a worse engine rock. Finally got it into the dealership and they told me it's a bad tensioner chain and also that my engine has been affected by that. I would think they would have known the issue was that instead of the spark plugs and coil packs. Now my engine is a goner and I'm left with a car payment with no vehicle due to the faulty chain tensioner. I believe that if they would have fixed the problem when I took it in then they could have seen my engine from blowing. All they did was did a patch up with spark plugs and coils.

17 Timing Tensioner problem of the 2010 Volkswagen CC

Failure Date: 12/15/2017

Out of no where my vehicle bucked and lost power. I was able to pull over and the engine failed to start. The vehicle was towed to my local vw dealership and diagnosed as a faulty timing chain tensioner. The repair would cost about $6500. Upon my research, I discovered that this is a pretty common issue among the 2008-2013 tsi 2. 0t engines. Over the years, dealerships had been made aware of the issue through technical service bulletins. Vw had failed to let the customer know about it or issue a recall and now I am stuck with a vehicle that doesn't run and can't afford to pay the outrageous amount to get it fixed.

18 Timing Tensioner problem of the 2010 Volkswagen CC

Failure Date: 11/28/2017

The timing belt tensioner failed while driving. Lost power and required a tow. Damaged valves, warped head and pistons was an expensive repair. This appears to be problem for the 2. 0 engine as I've read that has occurred with many other owner's. Volkswagen should take responsibility for these repairs.

19 Timing Tensioner problem of the 2011 Volkswagen CC

Failure Date: 11/01/2017

At 81k miles the timing chain tensioner failed leading to engine failure. $5k to repair. It started running rough after I started it. I drove it 15 miles turned it off and it would not start again.

20 Timing Tensioner problem of the 2011 Volkswagen CC

Failure Date: 10/16/2017

Check engine light came on, car started to misfire and dealership informed me that timing chain tensioner was bad. Car also has oil leaking issues. Car was at dealership for oil problem when it threw several codes for pvc valve and tensioner.

21 Timing Tensioner problem of the 2010 Volkswagen CC

Failure Date: 09/21/2017

My Volkswagen Cc is a 2010 with under 65,000 miles on it and the timing chain tensioner failed. It broke off and actually cracked the head so that I need to put in a new engine to have a working vehicle again. This is going to cost me $4500 for a car that is not even 5000 miles over the warranty period. I bought this car 3 years ago and have only put 30,000 miles on it. All of the maintenance has been done at the dealership at a costly rate too. It does not seem like an engine should catastrophically fail with this few miles.

22 Timing Tensioner problem of the 2010 Volkswagen CC

Failure Date: 09/20/2017

I went to start my vehicle parked in my driveway to go to work and the vehicle wouldn't start. I had just put fuel in it the night before so I knew that wasn't the problem. Had the vehicle towed to ase certified Volkswagen mechanic and they ran all tests to find that my timing chain tensioner was bad and needed to be replaced at a cost of $7400. I still owe $7k on the vehicle at this time. I don't have the funds to pay for this. The car has been sitting for the past 3mths. I am pregnant and am so glad that it didn't stop in the middle of the highway on me!.

23 Timing Tensioner problem of the 2010 Volkswagen CC

Failure Date: 08/02/2017

Tensioner failed. Maintenance manual says the part does not need service before 120,000 miles, but tensioner failed at 105. Many lawsuits around the country. Volkswagen updated part for newer vehicles but doesn't want to take responsilibity for previous owner https://mccunewright. Com/vw-timing-chain-tensioner-defect/.

24 Timing Tensioner problem of the 2010 Volkswagen CC

Failure Date: 07/28/2017

Timing chain tensioner stretched timing chain. Check engine light onparked. 3 class action suits against vw for fraud knowing this issue was present when vehicle was sold.

25 Timing Tensioner problem of the 2009 Volkswagen CC

Failure Date: 04/17/2017

Cam chain tensioner failure. Driving down road engine started to run rough then stopped got car back to house (75 yards) had car towed to vw dealer paid $140. 00 for diag. L major engine damage from cam chain tensioner failure valves and piston damaged could have been major safety problem if on major road ( dangerous unsafe ).

26 Timing Tensioner problem of the 2011 Volkswagen CC

Failure Date: 02/17/2017

Timing belt tensioner failed due to the orig design of the part. Volkswagen knew it was an issue and redesigned the part. But they left the original purchaser with the orig defective part. When that part fails, it causes a catastrophic engine failure. Which leaves the orig purchaser to replace their engines at their own cost. The fact that the part fails while driving is a safety issue, it causes the car to loose all power regardless of the speed, driving conditions and locations. Stranding the owner in a possibly precarious situation that could cause injury or death.

27 Timing Tensioner problem of the 2012 Volkswagen CC

Failure Date: 09/27/2016

Two days after returning from a trip with no issues. I went to start my car and it would crank but not fire. I had it towed to a vw dealer who was supposed to do a multipoint diagnostic. I was called and told the engine lost compression and the timing chain stretched causing damage to the cylinder head. The estimate was over $7000. I called an independent mechanic who was surprised to hear of the timing chain failure with that low of mileage, 73,000. He called back a few min later and told me of a TSB on the timing chain tensioner and also that there were lawsuits for this exact thing. Upon doing research I found multiple lawsuits, a settlement in 2014 in which they paid all repair costs and reimbursements. The lawsuit indicated that vw has known about a defective timing chain tensioner for years and have not put out a recall, nor even let their customers know of this potential. They do have a replacement tensioner available which does indicate they are aware of the problem. I asked the dealer tech how he diagnosed the problem and said he listened when he went to start and put a scope in the oil dip. With that small amount of time, he came up with a stretched timing chain and damaged head cylinder, and a major repair cost. I spoke with the service manager and asked about the defective tensioner and he denied any knowledge, which I find highly unlikely, due to the length of time this has been going on. I have a call into vw customer care asking for them to fix it at no cost due the defective part. This is a very large issue that can result in not only a high cost, major damage to the engine, but could also result in engine power, steering and brake capacity which is a catastrophic safety issue. This is an issue that needs to be communicated, and should be fixed by vw prior to any resulting damage, and more importantly any injury or loss of life.

28 Timing Tensioner problem of the 2012 Volkswagen CC

Failure Date: 09/10/2016

Timing chain tensioner problems. Huge noise on engine start, engine shaking. Repairing cost too high.

29 Timing Tensioner problem of the 2010 Volkswagen CC

Failure Date: 06/27/2016

The engine began to stall while stopped at a traffic light and the battery light illuminated. I restarted the engine and continued. The engine failed again on the highway at full speed, total loss of power. This time the battery, check engine and epc indicators illuminated. Vechicle would no longer turn over and was towed to vw dealership. It has been diagnosed that the chain tensioner failed, causing the timing chain to lose position throwing the camshaft, rods and pistons out of sync resulting in total engine failure. My vechicle only has approximately 85k miles and there is no scheduled maintenance for the timing chain in the service manual until 120k miles. It's also unheard of for an engine of that mileage to lose timing while running and that it gave no prior warning to the impending failure.

30 Timing Tensioner problem of the 2011 Volkswagen CC

Failure Date: 02/11/2016

My 2. 0l tsi timing chain tensioner failed causing timing chain to jump timing and damaging other engine parts. I was driving when the engine light and noise came in.
