3 Water Pump problem of the 2017 Volkswagen Golf

Failure Date: 12/22/2019

Thermostat housing and water pump, coolant loss and leak. Dealer replaced thermostat housing March 2019 (24,000mi), 12/22/19 (37,400mi) another coolant leak likely from second thermostate or orignal water pump which was said not to have been replaced. Car is well maintained and cared for preemptively as a german car should.

4 Water Pump problem of the 2015 Volkswagen Golf

Failure Date: 01/21/2019

Thermostat housing & associated seals on the current 1. 8l and 2. 0l Volkswagen/Audi ea888 gen 3 engine are prone to failure, causing loss of engine coolant. This could affect any vw/Audi vehicle using the 1. 8 or 2. 0l ea888 gen 3 engine. Vw has a long history of water pump/thermostat housing issues and the current generation of vehicles is no exception. Many other reports can be found on various online forums such as reddit. Com, Golfmk7. Com and vwvortex. Com, etc. This is a costly out of warranty repair requiring removal of the intake manifold and has been reported online by owners of 2015 2019 us my vehicles. Some vehicles, such as ours, experienced a repeat failure. There are three failure modes that I am aware of as reported on the sites mentioned above. My wife and I have experienced failure modes 1 and 2. When this issue is occurring owners often report the smell of coolant outside the vehicle 1. Housing heating/cooling causes expansion/contraction and warping resulting in a slow weep or leak from thermostat housing assembly & associated seal, most of the time not detectable at the housing assembly/seal without pressure test. Often, vw service centers are unable to verify there is a leak, even after pressure test, owners are sent on their way, and yet coolant still disappears from the tank. My wife's car went in for testing multiple times before issue was found. 2. Housing heating/cooling causes expansion/contraction and warping resulting in a small but constant leak large enough to create a small puddle or stream under the car. A low coolant alert may/may not appear depending on speed of the leak. 3. Housing heating/cooling causes expansion/contraction and warping resulting in a sudden catastrophic failure resulting in rapid loss of coolant and causing a visible large puddle under the car and a warning alert to appear on the dashboard.

5 Water Pump problem of the 2012 Volkswagen Golf

Failure Date: 06/02/2013

While operating the vehicle under normal conditions, I heard a rattle from the engine, followed by the sound of something rattling in the engine compartment and then falling out. The engine died immediately and I was able to coast to the shoulder. After the dealer inspected the car they found that the water pump was faulty and it caused the water pump pulley to come off and cause damage to the cylinder head, valves, cover, water pump, and timing belt, in addition to the water pump pulley falling off. The dealer then told me this was a known issue for this make and model and that they had made the same repair to several other models in their service department. They advised there was an updated water pump part that had components made of metal rather than plastic to withstand the engine heat, which was what caused my water pump to fail. Additionally, my vehicle was in for a regularly scheduled maintenance appointment days earlier and the dealer neglected to check the water pump or advise me that it might be faulty, even though they knew and admitted later to it being a known problem with the car.

6 Water Pump problem of the 2012 Volkswagen Golf

Failure Date: 12/24/2012

On 12/24/2012, returning from a restaurant with my family, I heard a bang and my engine died while driving on a city street at 35 mph. I was able to safely put the car in neutral and roll off the street. I found out on 12/26 that my water pump had fallen apart, destroying my timing belt and engine head. Several vehicles with the build date of my car have experienced water pump failures that destroy the timing belt and cause catastrophic engine failures. Luckily, I was traveling at a slow speed when the incident occurred. Vw claims to not know about "a widespread problem. " I was also told that no superseded part is being installed; the same water pump part is being put back. The dealer replaced the head, pump, belt, misc bolts, etc. I am worried about my safety that this incident will re-occur. . Read more...
