Automatic Transmission Problems of Volkswagen GTI - part 1

Volkswagen GTI owners have reported 59 problems related to automatic transmission (under the power train category). The most recently reported issues are listed below.

1 Automatic Transmission problem of the 2008 Volkswagen GTI

Failure Date: 12/19/2011

While driving the transmission dog bone mount bolt broke. This damaged: the transmission housing - the transmission housing support - the catalytic converter assembly - steering - the wiring harness - the radiator - the radiator fan - additional items. The loss of control that resulted could have led to bodily injury. Vw is declining warranty coverage for this defect.

2 Automatic Transmission problem of the 2011 Volkswagen GTI

Failure Date: 06/18/2011

The vehicle is a 2011 Volkswagen Gti equipped with a dsg transmission. The Gti is not offered as choice when selecting vehicle model using this on-line compliant form. Occasionally the vehicle fails to accelerate or accelerates very slowly when attempting to move forward from a complete stop. When this occurs the engine revolutions will increase but with little or no forward motion, as if the transmission was in neutral. After several seconds at high rpm (~3000 -4000) the engine revs drop, sometimes abruptly and the car begins to accelerate normally. This behavior is infrequent occurring, 6 times over ~ 3000 miles. This behavior is a safety concern because there is a risk of an accident if it were to occur while attempting to pull into traffic. The vehicle has been evaluated by the dealer but they have not been able to replicate the problem or find any defect.

3 Automatic Transmission problem of the 2010 Volkswagen GTI

Failure Date: 10/12/2010

Vw Gti 2010 dsg auto transmission loss of power. 8 months with vehicle, had 5 emergencies on intersection cross, the Gti will increase engine revolution but the car will not move for about 4 seconds, then it will launch almost burning tires. Now the car started to act the same way when you are shifting down from 5 to 4 or from 4 to 3rd gear, it looses power for about 4 seconds before it picks up power again. This situation has put me and family into serious hazard in a highway. Hope vw will resolve this issue soon. Cars is now (10/16/2010) on a dealer for the second time for technicians to check it again. Ps. : car presented the same problem on 1st gear since day one with 10 miles out of the dealership. Thank you for your attention.

4 Automatic Transmission problem of the 2008 Volkswagen GTI

Failure Date: 09/01/2010

2008 vw Gti dsg--automatic transmission problem: the car "jumps" randomly when releasing foot off the brake at a red light, or when engaging from park to drive and releasing brake. Many "close calls" to crashing and/or property damage due to known issue, especially when parallel parked on street: I. E. Car jumping forward or backward potentially damaging parked cars around or, even worse, "jumping" into the traffic lanes. Dealership deflects the issue, claiming it to be "normal" operation of the transmission. Warranty on the transmission has been extended to 10yr/100,000mile, though not in response to this issue, according to dealership.

5 Automatic Transmission problem of the 2008 Volkswagen GTI

Failure Date: 08/04/2010

Harsh shifting during acceleration in 2008 Volkswagen Gti with dsg transmission.

6 Automatic Transmission problem of the 2010 Volkswagen GTI

Failure Date: 07/08/2010

Jerky, halting transmission engagement /disengagement in first to second gear. Caused a rear-end accident with only 343 miles on the car. I thought it was me but I have read similar complaints online.

7 Automatic Transmission problem of the 2008 Volkswagen GTI

Failure Date: 04/27/2010

Hard jerking based in auto transmission occurring when in drive at a stop with no pressure applied to either the brake or the gas. This occurs consistently and daily under normal, in-town driving conditions.

8 Automatic Transmission problem of the 2007 Volkswagen GTI

Failure Date: 04/15/2010

When coming to a stop, the final downshift from 2nd gear to 1st gear is extremely violent. The car randomly lunges forward when approaching a full stop. This has resulted in a few near-collisions. The dealership is currently trying to diagnose issue. This seems to be a common occurrence in this particular transmission type (dsg).

9 Automatic Transmission problem of the 2007 Volkswagen GTI

Failure Date: 02/24/2010

The contact owns a 2007 Volkswagen Gti. The contact was driving 75 mph when the vehicle shifted into neutral gear own its own. The warning light illuminated on the dashboard. The vehicle lost power and began to move extremely slow which could have caused a crash to occur. The manufacturer was notified about the failure. The manufacturer informed the contact that his vehicle was produced 3 weeks before the recall on the dsg transmission and there was nothing that they could do. The failure mileage was 11,950 and the current mileage was 12,100.

10 Automatic Transmission problem of the 2007 Volkswagen GTI

Failure Date: 02/19/2010

Frequently when accelerating from a stop or accelerating after slowing down the dsg transmission seems to select neutral for a second or two before selecting a gear. When it eventually selects a gear it jerks harshly inducing wheelspin. This happens in all types of driving conditions, but is more likely to happen when the car is cold. Mostly, this is just an annoyance; however, when a truck is bearing down on you while you are making a left turn it can be frightening and perhaps even life threatening. The service manager vw dealer tells me this is normal behavior. He is wrong.

11 Automatic Transmission problem of the 2007 Volkswagen GTI

Failure Date: 02/17/2010

2007 Volkswagen Gti. Dsg transmission issues. My car will lunge in reverse. Lag in 1st and 2nd. Biggest issue is the lunging in reverse(this could cause an accident!!. I contacted vw cares yesterday to see if my vw is covered under there 10y 100,000 mile warranty. They told me my car does not fall into that category due to my VIN# although it fits the year criteria my issue is that if this is a know safety problem and my car has this issue. Why won't it be included ??!!.

12 Automatic Transmission problem of the 2008 Volkswagen GTI

Failure Date: 12/05/2009

The car lurches when moving from a stop. This is a big issue in traffic due to the lag that exists in application of throttle to actual movement. What also happens is a momentary neutral when you apply full throttle when moving. This is not like a normal kickdown, the car does nothing at first then rockets forward , to the extent that it is very difficult to drive in stop and go traffic. I have had numerous close call in this car as a result of the transmission shift patterns. These are all present after driving the car 20+ miles to work in traffic.

13 Automatic Transmission problem of the 2007 Volkswagen GTI

Failure Date: 11/19/2009

My 2007 Volkswagen Gti has a dsg transmission. It has been experiencing "lurching" or "jumping" while the car is stopped at traffic lights or idling and this kicks up the rpm's and makes you feel like the car is either going to move on it's own or it makes it feel as if you've been hit from the rear? I will take this complaint to Volkswagen as well, so we shall see what they say and more importantly, do.

14 Automatic Transmission problem of the 2008 Volkswagen GTI

Failure Date: 10/18/2009

Normal acceleration from a stop or rolling, the dsg transmission will hesitate and produce a very rough shift to the next gear. This is intermittent but almost daily. Car is now in the vw dealers repair shop.

15 Automatic Transmission problem of the 2009 Volkswagen GTI

Failure Date: 10/01/2009

I purchased the car in the beginning of July 2009, noticed weird shifting but figured it was part of car break in process. Now I notice it happen almost daily. The car shifts harshly during acceleration and deceleration. It jerks forward a lot during bumper to bumper traffic. Lately the car will hesitate when going from complete stop to forward then "buck" forward.

16 Automatic Transmission problem of the 2008 Volkswagen GTI

Failure Date: 09/16/2009

My car (2008 vw Gti w/dsg) runs very choppy at low speeds and in reverse. Often times at a stop light, the car would shift very hard into first gear when I let go of the brake.

17 Automatic Transmission problem of the 2007 Volkswagen GTI

Failure Date: 09/04/2009

Dsg transmission. The car lurches from 1st to 2nd gear and when coming to a slow stop. This issue was reported to cardinale vw in corona but they stated they could not replicate the problem yet I experience it daily.

18 Automatic Transmission problem of the 2008 Volkswagen GTI

Failure Date: 08/30/2009

I own a 2008 vw mkv Gti with dsg transmission, and I have encountered the following problems. 1. After a 700 mile drive, I noticed that the prdns display was flashing, and that my transmission was locked in 2nd gear, no other gears could be used including reverse after shutting down my car, and letting it sit for 20 minutes, I restarted the car and it was behaving normal again, and the flashing of the prdns display was gone. 2. For a couple of days now I have experienced a potentially dangerous behavior of my dsg transmission, when coming to a stop it jerks and surges forward in 1st gear, the same happens when taking of from a stop it jerks and surges, which makes it for the driver impossible to control/modulate the speed with which the car will move forward, I have to keep a substantial distance from the traffic in front of me to not hit them by accident due to the surging behavior of my transmission this surging and jerky behavior is only in 1st gear and reverse, and happens when the transmission shifts back into 1st or when you take off from 1st or reverse. Currently dealers are aware of the issues, but have not been able to fix the issues due to parts not being available at the time I called.

19 Automatic Transmission problem of the 2007 Volkswagen GTI

Failure Date: 08/26/2009

Issue with my car suddenly switching itself into neutral even though physically the car was in drive. I was on a busy street going 60mph with the flow of traffic, when my car switched to neutral. This caused my car to go from 60mph to 20mph in a matter of seconds in which case the car beyond me going 60mph+ nearly rear ended me.

20 Automatic Transmission problem of the 2009 Volkswagen GTI

Failure Date: 08/20/2009

The car had been driven for ~20 minutes, then sat for ~45 minutes, and then was driven for an additional 20 minutes before the event occurred, leading me to believe that the engine and transmission were both up to normal operating temperature. The vehicle was exiting a right hand turn and accelerating when the engine rev's shot up to redline and there was no power going to the wheels, only forward momentum kept the car going. It was as if the car was suddenly put into neutral. The indicator on the display was still indicating that the car was in drive. The car was then pulled over to the side of the road, and while still in drive, when the gas pedal was pressed only the rev's shot up with no power to the wheels, exactly as it would in neutral. The ignition was switched off and back on, and the car then operated normally. This was a brand new car with less than 200 miles on it. It has only happened one time. We are currently not driving the vehicle. I'm not sure if this is considered a automatic or manual transmission, but it was a dsg transmission. I will submit it as automatic.

21 Automatic Transmission problem of the 2006 Volkswagen GTI

Failure Date: 08/18/2009

My 2006 vw Gti with a dsg transmission worked flawlessly for approximately 10k miles. Starting at about 12k miles and up until now at 16k miles I am experiencing issues with the automatic transmission. This includes delays at shift points, causing erratic shifting, jerking, long stall pauses, clutch slipping, surging in forward and reverse, etc. Typically when pulling out into traffic from a parking lot for example there is a long 2 sec pause between 1 and 2. This is disturbing considering approaching traffic and waiting for 2nd gear to engage with power. Another example is noticeable jerking when shifting at low speeds typically from 1-2 almost feeling like a bump from another car. In addition I have experienced no gear engagement when shifting into reverse. Even though it says reverse it acts like neutral. I have queried the dealer in regard to issues and even taken it in. Because there were no fault codes their response was it is operating as normal.

22 Automatic Transmission problem of the 2006 Volkswagen GTI

Failure Date: 08/10/2009

Having severe downshift bucking issues with a 2006 vw Gti with the dsg transmission, cannot get dealer to fix issues with the downshifting. Causes upon down shift of the 3rd to 2nd gear the car to do a bucking motion upon slowing down. Very dangerous when coming to a stop on a wet or icy road. It occurs regularly enough that I can almost get it to duplicate it when car is at normal operating temperature. The dealership says the notice/acknowledge the issues but cant figure it out or do any repairs. I have suggested several options I have read about but they will take none of them into consideration.

23 Automatic Transmission problem of the 2008 Volkswagen GTI

Failure Date: 08/08/2009

I've noticed starting this summer my car has been really jerky, even surging forward when stopped occasionally. A few days ago it actually lost power while I was at speed on the freeway. This is extremely dangerous, especially in the winter time with icy conditions where I live. After researching the problem I've noticed I'm not the only one with this problem. Something has to be done before it costs someone their life.

24 Automatic Transmission problem of the 2007 Volkswagen GTI

Failure Date: 08/01/2009

Well I was at a stop light and when I went to go it redline and didnt go anywhere I was in 1 gear in dsg mode I had to put it into park and than back to gear then their was a delay then it went . Thier also times that my power plus ates, also getting on to the freeway it slips out of power u go to shift and thier no power at all, when I let the car down shift it is really hard like it shocks the hole care back its so rough it does it more from 3 to 2 but now latley its been 4 to 3 and 3 to 2.

25 Automatic Transmission problem of the 2006 Volkswagen GTI

Failure Date: 07/25/2009

I own a 2006 vw Gti with a dsg transmission and wanted to file a complaint noting that the transmission while hesitate for a long period of time before engaging primarily when attempting to accelerate from a stop or when attempting to pass or merge into highway traffic. Any of these situations are potentially dangerous and could cause an accident.

26 Automatic Transmission problem of the 2008 Volkswagen GTI

Failure Date: 07/23/2009

My dsg worked when I first got the car. I now have 20k miles on the car and my dsg is clunky, unsmooth, and sometimes the reverse gear does not even work, it just goes into neutral and stays there until I go back into park and switch back to reverse. I think that the dsg is a great transmission, don't get me wrong, but I feel that too many of them are failing too quickly. If vwoa were to fix these bugs then it would be an amazing transmission. I am having so many problems with my transmission that im thinking that I should have just got the manual. Vwoa needs to fix these bugs before something bad happens, to me, or other fellow vw owners.

27 Automatic Transmission problem of the 2008 Volkswagen GTI

Failure Date: 07/20/2009

The dsg transmission on my 2008 vw Gti began acting unpredictably about 3 weeks ago. When lifting off the brake after coming to a stop, the car feels like it is about to stall, the engine rpm's drop very low (250rpm), and then quickly jump to 750-1000rpm, forcing the car to buck and surge forward. In reverse, the car bucks backward. This creates unpredictable driving conditions. I am concerned it could create an accident at a stop light or other intersection by either uncontrollably surging into the car in front of me or by being hit by the car behind me as the car bucks forward. I have taken the car to the dealer for service and they identified a faulty mechatronics unit which would require 3-4 weeks to be repaired. The dealer stated the car cannot be driven until that part is replaced and will remain in their possession until that time.

28 Automatic Transmission problem of the 2007 Volkswagen GTI

Failure Date: 07/19/2009

The 5th generation vw Gti with dgs transmission will jerk in reverse that could cause one to hit another car. It also hesitates before launching and that could cause one to pull out into oncoming traffic too late, thus causing an accident.

29 Automatic Transmission problem of the 2008 Volkswagen GTI

Failure Date: 07/19/2009

I started to notice a few months ago that my dsg transmission on my 2008 Volkswagen Gti was starting to act weird. It would have a hard jerking when it would downshift into a gear when coming to a stop. Its would also hesitate going into gear when I would give it throttle. A few times when the hesitation would occur it almost caused me to get into an accident.

30 Automatic Transmission problem of the 2008 Volkswagen GTI

Failure Date: 07/16/2009

I will start with the most serious incident first. At the time of incident I was driving up a hill making a left turn into a side street. I stopped to wait for traffic to clear, when traffic cleared I let off the brake and pressed the gas pedal. The car slowly started to roll forward as I approached the middle of the oncoming lane the transmission shifted into neutral and the rpm's climbed. We started to roll back slightly. I pressed the gas harder and the car rolled back for a second, then slammed into the forward gear and I made it across the intersection, without being hit by an oncoming vehicle. My girlfriend was in the passenger seat and very upset about this. Earlier that evening we exited a driveway in reverse, then put the car into drive. The car rolled back and stalled. I got the car started and we resumed our trip. I took it to the dealer, and they said there were no fault codes and said everything is fine. Yesterday (Aug 10th 2009) I was exiting a parking lot, making a left turn and again halfway through the turn the car went into neutral, nearly causing an accident, the car then slammed back into gear and resumed forward motion. In addition to these incidents the vehicle slams into forward gear from almost every stop. And when the transmission downshifts while stopping there is a strong jerky motion. Also in reverse the vehicle bucks as if is going in and out of the reverse gear. All incidents occurred while the vehicle was in normal "d" driving mode, for the forward incidents, or "r" gear for the reverse incidents. These jerky motions are daily occurrences.

31 Automatic Transmission problem of the 2008 Volkswagen GTI

Failure Date: 07/15/2009

Purchased a new 2008 vw Gti with the dsg transmission. After 3 months of ownership, I noticed the following problem: when vehicle starts to slowly accelerate from a complete stop, vehicle surges back and forth (jerks) constantly until you pick up speed then condition goes away. This is more prevalent when engine/trans is hot. Also condition is worst when vehicle starts to move when going uphill or inclines, it will surge hard as if trying to decide on 1st or 2nd gear. I want to report this, because on several instances, specially when slowly applying the gas to creep uphill along with traffic, my vehicle has surged forward hard enough that I almost hit the car in front of me if I had not and reacted quickly to the jerking surge. Condition also presents when driving on a level road, but its more controllable than in an incline. It only happens when creeping of going slowly below 1200rpm. I have read that this condition affects the dsg transmission and its mechatronics unit is prone to failure causing the symptoms I have described.

32 Automatic Transmission problem of the 2008 Volkswagen GTI

Failure Date: 07/15/2009

When I first bought my 2008 Volkswagen Gti it was a great car, but shortly after things started to change. For no apparent reason the car started driving very rough and has almost got me into accidents at times. One instance of this was when I was turning onto a highway (right on red) and after accelerating and the car shifting to 2nd gear from 1st the car just paused and took 3-4 seconds to shift and left me there not accelerating and almost getting rear ended. Luckily there driver avoided hitting me and I was safe. I have been reading up on this problem and it seems to be with the mechatronics unit of the dsg(direct shift gearbox) in my car and many others are having similar problems. Some people have been lucky enough for it to be fixed and others are stuck with it still not working after multiple fixes. It would be great if someone could look into this problem and find a resolution.

33 Automatic Transmission problem of the 2006 Volkswagen GTI

Failure Date: 07/14/2009

Car will jerk between downshifts while coming to a light, also when accelerating the car will pause before shifting and almost forget what it was doing. It will lose all power and just hang there causing my car to just die out in traffic. Also seems to shift into neutral for no reason.

34 Automatic Transmission problem of the 2007 Volkswagen GTI

Failure Date: 07/03/2009

2007 vw Gti with dsg transmission. The transmission slams into gear when slowing down and then accelerating again, this could lead to accidents and or serious mechanical failure due to the stress on the drivetrain components, brought it up at a service appt and technician said it was normal, I do not believe having a transmission making a loud bang sound and slamming into gear, jerking the car forward is normal.

35 Automatic Transmission problem of the 2008 Volkswagen GTI

Failure Date: 07/03/2009

I own a 2008 vw Gti with the dsg transmission. For the last few days it has been surging when driving at low "parking lot" speeds less than 10 mph. The car also shifts very hard from 3rd to 2nd and then to 1st gear, especially when the car is warmed up and the ambient temperature is high, around 90 degrees.
