Volkswagen GTI owners have reported 8 problems related to transmission not go into gear (under the power train category). The most recently reported issues are listed below.
I took my car to gunther Volkswagen in ft lauderdale, FL. My automatic dsg transmission was not shifting into gear on many occasions as I was driving, parking stopped at a light. On several occasions this problem had resulted in some near accidents with other cars, and on two occasions I had hit a pole and a wall. The near accidents with cars had occurred in parking situations as well as on the street at traffic lights when my car would not move and cars behind me almost hit me. Another occasion my car would not move when I was at an intersection waiting for traffic to clear to turn left, and the light changed. When this problem was occurring the shift indicator letters in the electronic display would flash with boxes around them. It was discovered by the dealer that the transmission problem I was having was the subject of a voluntary recall by Volkswagen. I was told that the mechatronic unit of my transmission would be replaced under this voluntary recall as well as the other fuse recall. Later in the day I was called by car dealership and they informed me that the fuse recall work would be done but the transmission recall would not be done because my car had a rebuilt title. The car had been in an accident where it sustained damage to right front suspension and insurance company had paid out claim and declared vehicle a total loss. I bought "salvaged" vehicle and repaired damage for under $1,000 and retitled (rebuilt) vehicle under florida law. According to what I have read on NHTSA website if vehicle is on the road and being driven around manufacturers are required to perform recall repairs on them. The recall on this transmission issue was subject of an investigation by NHTSA (action number peo9035) several accidents had occurred because of it but no injuries were reported. Can you please advise if vw is required to repair my vehicle under this voluntary recall?.

First issue I had was about two years after purchasing my vehicle was with my gear box. I have an automatic "dsg" transmission which began giving an error light telling me to take my car to service immediately. I took it to my local Volkswagen dealer which ended up replacing the whole box unit do to an electrical sensor not reading when I'd engage into drive. I was under warranty so it was cost free but another year later the same error is coming out and was told it would have to be replaced again but I'm no longer under warranty so I'd have to pay. I feel that's pretty unfair and unacceptable knowing its happen once and was replaced by professionals yet I'm stuck with the same situation. I feel this part should have came with some sort of guarantee after being replaced. I got this car in November of 2015 and it's pretty sad that in under 4 years I'm experiencing this scenario. Now I fear of driving knowing that error will come on at some point or worse something happen with my gears and the car be put in another gear at random. And now I'm being placed in another situation in which my waterpump is leaking coolant which I find very upsetting knowing Volkswagen had this same issue with the 201-2014 Gti mk6 and had a recall yet it seems the problem continues with the following generation. And it's sad to say but I'm at the point of calling corporate and seeing what they can do because I haven't even hit 50,000 miles and this is happening. And both of this parts are pretty pricey when it comes to labor. At this point I can only hold off and save to hopefully get the water pump replaced but as far as for the transmisson issue I'll wait to see what can be done because I feel that should be resolved by Volkswagen.

While driving my way to work I parked the car and came out to go grab something to eat. The car would not move till I noticed my gears were flashing on and off (p,r,n,d,s). I couldnt get into any gears at all and so I called a tow truck. They came out and I gave them the key to try and move the car. They were able to get into gears but I told them I didnt feel safe driving it so I had them tow it home. The next day the same thing happened indefinitely. I did not want to pay the dealer 5600 bucks to fix it as other people are having the same issue. Im waiting on vw to either do a recall or some kind of research to fix this problem. I also called vw and they said they replaced the mechatronic unit for my car already. But how would it fail again already? there was no explination therefore I am waiting for a response from vw or get a letter in the mail for a total recall.

From second day of ownership vehicle has had transmission (dsg automatic) problems. At well over 40 occurrences (in 30,000 miles) the transmission will slip into neutral when slowing to a rate of 10mph or less and then trying to accelerate, causing an extremely unsafe condition. One instance a collision was avoided by another motorist swerving onto the sidewalk to miss my vehicle and almost struck a pedestrian when my transmission went into neutral and I coasted into the intersection. Another symptom of the transmission is that the car will go into neutral at highway speed. At 65-70mph it will without warning or notice go into neutral and sometimes will not go back into gear until the vehicle has come to a complete stop. I have had the car into the dealer many times and it is the same story again and again, unless I can replicate the problem with a mechanic in the car they cant fix anything. I brought the issue to the dealers attention after the first incident the second day of ownership and they looked at it and said it is fine, and that I'm just not use to the car yet. After two accidents avoided I no longer feel safe driving the car and do not want it. Please do something about this issue before someone is seriously hurt!.

Conditions: 20 degrees, sunny, louisville, kentucky. Vehicle: 2010 vw Gti 4-dr w/dsg transmission. Currently 263 miles on the odometer. Backed out of my garage, put the car in drive (d), and proceeded down my driveway. Began driving out my subdivision and noticed the engine rpms were getting louder and the car appeared to be stuck in 1st gear. I put the dsg transmission in both manual mode and sport mode, tried to manually shift the vehicle into another gear, but had no success. Stopped the car, turned it off, waited a few minutes, started the car, started driving again. Same behavior. . . The car would only run in 1st gear. Proceeded to turn around to get the vehicle back to my house only to learn that reverse was not working. Contacted vw roadside assistance and had them tow the car to the local vw dealership. Service is closed until Monday, 1/4/2010, so will not know next steps until then. Confirmed manufacture date of this 2010 vw Gti was 07/2009 (apparently within the time frame vw has indicated there were manufacturing issues with the dsg transmission). The symptom of the failure I experienced is far different than the current recall from vw (cars shifting into neutral). In this case, my car simply would not shift out of 1st gear and also would not work in reverse). Believe the vw dsg transmission issue is only going to expand. Would like to see the NHTSA further investigate this matter with vw to ensure all affected transmissions are replaced. Regards,
brian pearson.

Experiencing several safety issues with vw dsg transmission in my 2009 Gti. First, shifting into park. When shifting from either reverse or drive into park on a hill, vehicle rolls 3 feet and then hits a hard "stop". Second, very hard downshifting/engine braking in automatic mode when slowing down. This happens at 20 mph and then again at 10 mph. If you are applying the brakes when this engine braking happens it is impossible to stop at a desired point. You can be smoothly applying the brake and then when you slow to 20 mph the engine braking drastically slows the vehicle even more. It's like shifting into a lower gear at too high a speed while simultaneously applying the brakes. Very dangerous! third, lurch/surge when starting on a hill. When backing out of a spot on a hill or starting forward on a hill having just put the vehicle in drive the engine revs for 3 seconds as if it is not in gear and then lurches suddenly forward.
My 2009 vw Gti with dsg very briefly lost power while attempting to accelerate on the highway. The engine revved, but the transmission felt as if it were not in gear. This lasted 2-3 seconds, during a merge. Had there been fast-moving traffic closer behind, I could have easily been rear-ended. Lifting off the accelerator and re-applying seemed to get the car back in gear. This was the only occurrence. The car has not been taken for service; I am submitting this complaint in response to the NHTSA's investigation into vw's dsg.
My vehicle (2005 vw Gti) will with out any notice turn itself off at a stop light and when restarted it does not shift into gear right away. It does this often. When I shift into reverse and then shift into drive it takes a little bit of time before my vehicle shifts into gear causing me to stay idle in one place. I have gotten close to getting into several accidents with my car turning off and then taking more then the required time to shift into gear. I have been told by my mechanic that is my dsg transmission and he has heard this problem with several of my type of car. This is a very dangerous problem and could cause accidents for people driving this vehicle with a faulty dsg transmission. The cost to replace these transmissions is very expensive and vw should do more to ensure the safety of its car owners.
