Volkswagen GTI owners have reported 4 problems related to engine belts and pulleys (under the engine and engine cooling category). The most recently reported issues are listed below.
I was traveling at approximately 40 mph when another vehicle ran a stop sign. I t-boned the other vehicle. The front of my car impacted the front passenger fender and door of the other vehicle. I did not have time to apply the brake, only enough to let off of the gas pedal before the collision occurred. I was wearing my seat belt at the time of the accident. My vehicle was not driveable and sustained front end damage and engine compartment damage. My airbags did not deploy even though I was travelling at 40 mph.

2001 vw Gti bought used. At 79,000 miles had 80k service done at dealership which included checking timing belt. At 82,000 timing belt broke causing extensive damage to engine. Needed to replace engine cost me $5300 in which vw would not pay for as warranty only covers original owner. Vw claims belt is supposed to last 105,000 miles. After researching on internet, numerous claims for all 1. 8t engines regarding the timing belt going well before 105,000.

The contact owns a 2007 Volkswagen Gti. Sporadically, the air bag and engine warning lights illuminated on the instrument control panel. The vehicle was taken to the dealer on ten occasions and they replaced the intake manifold sensors, the rear seal in the trunk, the sun roof assembly, and the seat belt position sensor. Immediately after the repairs were made, the failures recurred. The contact is in the process of notifying the manufacturer. The failure mileage was 12,000 and current mileage was 34,000.
I have taken my '03 Gti vr6 to the dealer 3 times for the same complaint. When it is raining, there is a squealing noise coming from the passenger side of the car. Dealer could not replicate the problem each time I brought the car to them. They said that it could be the belt but it would not be covered under warranty. I replaced the belt myself and I still get the squealing noise, even with belt dressing. I have also noticed a decrease in engine power when the squealing noise is occurring. My most recent problem now is my speedometer and fuel gauge stop working intermittently. The speedo will be reading my current speed and then drop to zero, bounce back up and back down to zero, up a little bit more and then stay at zero until the next time I drive the car. Seems to do this only on trips greater than 20 minutes.
