For the third time since owning my car, I was driving and the engine failed. Without any other previous warning lights or indicators coming on, while I was on the freeway, my car slowed, the engine light flashed, and then the car completely died. I was able to restart and pull to the side of the shoulder. Because this has happened before, I suspected the oil was running low. We refilled it, and the car did start, and now drives again without issue. I just had my car serviced two months prior, and they told me to fill my oil again at 39,000 miles or at the end of June, whichever came first. I was only at 37k miles and it is June 1. When this first happened, I was told the engine had a "protective feature" to turn off when the oil was low to make sure the engine wasn't damaged. Without an oil light indicating that it is low, how can dying without warning while driving be a protective feature? I'm lucky I didn't get hit by another car on the freeway, or cause a pileup.

On 12/20/2017, engine failed @ 18050 miles and caused instantaneous loss of power in traffic. Engine failed directly off lakeshore drive in chicago, which has no shoulder. A strong smell of burning plastic and rubber was emanating from the engine compartment after the breakdown. Vehicle was towed into dealership and repair took 40 days, as engineers in germany had to be consulted on the proper repair method. Service advisor informed me he was "surprised they didn't put a new engine into the vehicle". Upon the vehicles return to us, on three separate occasions the vehicle revs dropped suddenly and we experience a severe drop in engine power for 2-3 seconds, once while turning and traffic was heading towards our car. Vehicle was returned to dealer for further repair but no issues were found and we were asked to try to get video recordings of the issue. To date the vehicle has been out of service for 45 days, and the issue almost resulted in causing an accident.

I was told that the ignition coil should last up until 100k mileage and this gave out at 65k and caused engine misfiring and almost engine failure. Volkswagen has similar recalls for their ignition coils and I think the 2010 vw Gti should be included. Thank you.

Despite regular maintenance, the cam follower and cam of my vw 2. 0t fsi engine failed in under 40k miles. This resulted in fuel cuts and power drop offs. A very dangerous combination when merging onto a highway. These items were replaced under warranty, but would have cost me nearly $1400 to repair if they weren't covered.
