Gas Recirculation Valve (egr Valve) Problems of Volkswagen GTI

Volkswagen GTI owners have reported 5 problems related to gas recirculation valve (egr valve) (under the engine and engine cooling category). The most recently reported issues are listed below.

1 Gas Recirculation Valve (egr Valve) problem of the 2019 Volkswagen GTI

Failure Date: 07/15/2019

2019 Gti s with manual transmission was leased and picked up on 7/13/19. Car engine shuts down intermittently while stopped after decelerating at low speeds (primarily city driving). The car shuts down with either a fully-engaged clutch (engine rpms are at around 1100 when clutch is depressed in preparation for stop) or in neutral. When stopped, engine idles at 800rpm and then shuts down softly. Car restarts right away by turning key. Today, car stalled six times between 7:50am and 8:20am while driving on a 25 mph street with traffic lights. It does not shut down at every stop, and when it does, it does so with both a/c on and off. Engine temperature is normal, and outside temperature was 73 degrees. Current mileage is 300 miles, but the issue started almost immediately after leaving dealership. Yesterday drove almost 300 miles. Car performs well at highway speeds, but the stalling started as soon as it entered city traffic with traffic lights. Brought into dealership this morning after the six stalls without an appointment; service manager seemed to be aware of the issue. Car currently at dealership.

2 Gas Recirculation Valve (egr Valve) problem of the 2019 Volkswagen GTI

Failure Date: 06/29/2019

The problem started less than 24 hours from taking delivery of the vehicle with 16 miles on the odometer. The first incident happened at 111 miles on the odometer, 90 degrees ambient temp, oil temp 210. The engine dies when approaching a stop with the clutch depressed. Does it in neutral and when in first or second gear. Gauges remain on with lighting, tach at zero. After stalling the car starts with a push of the starter button, foot on brake and clutch depressed. If the car stalls when parking the gauges remain on with lighting, tach at zero. The car must be restarted and then shut off with the started button for the gauges and the rest of the cars electrics to power down. Not safe to drive.

3 Gas Recirculation Valve (egr Valve) problem of the 2019 Volkswagen GTI

Failure Date: 04/08/2019

2019 Gti se 6mt. Car soft stalls - rpm drops to zero (without jerking motion) at random intervals when coming to a complete stop with clutch pedal fully depressed. Pressing the start/stop button starts the engine again and the car operates as normal. Car is at operating temperature, ambient outside temperature was approximately 70 degrees. Behavior is not readily reproducible. Car has approximately 350 miles on the odometer with a build date of 1/19.

4 Gas Recirculation Valve (egr Valve) problem of the 2019 Volkswagen GTI

Failure Date: 03/16/2019

The car will stall when slowing down to a stop in neutral, then will require restarting. Problem is more persistent in warmer temperature and also when the oil temperature is above 220 degrees. However does not cause cel or throw any codes. I am concerned about my safety operating the vehicle in this condition because I constantly have to restart the car which can put me in very dangerous situation.

5 Gas Recirculation Valve (egr Valve) problem of the 2015 Volkswagen GTI

Failure Date: 07/29/2016

The clutch operation in my 2015 volkswage Gti (6 speed manual transmission) is malfunctioning to such a degree that I was almost in an accident and now fear for my safety. Clutch operation in the vehicle has become unpredictable, when depressed the clutch pedal will remain on the floor after the pedal is released, thus preventing the vehicle from accelerating. This has happened multiple times while stationary in traffic, while in motion and while accelerating. Most recently while attempting to merge onto a busy highway the clutch pedal stuck to the floor, this nearly forced me to take evasive steps into a construction zone. After this incident I brought the vehicle to the Volkswagen dealership for diagnosis and service. I have heard of several alarmingly similar reports from other 2015 Gti owners where the cause of the issue was a failed engine bearing that results in side-to-side crankshaft movement in the engine.
