The contact owns a 2005 Volkswagen Jetta. The contact stated that the wiring that extended from the alternator to the power distribution center burned, causing the battery's inability to hold a charge and the engine's inability to start successfully. The vehicle was taken to a repair shop where the wires were replaced. Also, the gauges on the instrument cluster failed; while driving, the contact noticed that the gauges were moving around and not stay steady. The mechanic also replaced the instrument cluster and reprogrammed the computer. The contact called the manufacturer who offered no assistance. The failure mileage was approximately 67,000.

2003 Volkswagen Jetta gl was found to have fried cable from alternator leading to fuse box on top of battery. Problem was found and fixed 3 years prior to being found again at the dealership. Both times cable and fuse box were replaced. Pictures of the second incident are available. Also found that this incident has happened on other Jettas as well. Worried that could potentially cause a fire.

Vehicle shut down while driving twice, could result in car being disabled while driving at any speed any where becoming a very dangerous situation for the driver and an obstacle on the road for other drivers to try to avoid. Volkswagen dealership isolated this to a faulty harness connecting the alternator tothe fuse located on top of the battery. The harness and the fuse box had to be replaced. The dealership said this problem is only common to vw beatles and vw Jetta, because they said the car was 2002 it was out of warranty not covered. I was more concerned of the safety of life and property this problem would cause. I filed a complaint with the attorney general john krogers office in oregon, they sent me a letter stating they had forwarded this complaint to the national highway traffic safety admin in washington DC . I tried to contact them by phone, they asked if I had a confirmation # . I haven't as of yet received a letter or phone call.

1. 2002 vw Jetta wagon electrical system failure on expressway caused vehicle to stop & unable to start 9/6/09. Vehicle towed to dealer. 2. Vw dealer failure description, wire harness corrosion caused restriction in power flow in line which caused alternator to overwork and overheat wire harness and fuse panel. This extensive enough to cause melting of both wire harness and fuse panel over top of battery. 3. Vw dealer repair and replace wire harness and fuse body. 4. Vw customer care took information on my complaint about defect and potential safety issue but would do nothing referring me back to the dealer. My question was why did vw have such a defect where there was no fusible link that would fail first preventing the extensive damage that occurred.
The contact owns a 2003 Volkswagen Jetta. The contact stated that there was a burning smell coming from the front of the vehicle as the battery light illuminated. The contact discovered that the fuse panel caught on fire. The vehicle was taken to the dealer where it was diagnosed that the alternator, the harness, and the fuse panel needed to be replaced. The vehicle was repaired but failed to remedy the failure. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was 43,000.
I purchased a certified used vehicle in 2006 from a Volkswagen dealer in virginia (vokswagen of dulles). Two months after the vehicle purchase, we noticed the car electrical system shut down while approaching a stop sign in reston, va. The local dealer attributed it to a fuel system problem and charged us for a ¿throttle body cleaning. ¿ over the course of two years, we had multiple electrical shutdowns, some at high speed on the highway at night when the vehicle's headlights would go out and the engine would die. At one point the dealer reported a ¿loose ignition switch and replaced that switch. After several more scary events, I emailed vw America with a description of the problem and our fears about the vehicle being unsafe to drive. In March 2009 I called vw customer service and talked to a regional case manager. On that day, the car had shut down in the middle of an intersection narrowly avoiding a collision. Vw replaced the alternator and battery. Three months later, driving on memorial parkway (rt. 66) at night when the vehicles lights failed, the electrical system shut down and the engine died. I once again called vw customer service and was returned a call from a representative who said they would not address the problem further, that the warranty on the vehicle was over and that I had no recourse with Volkswagen for further investigation of the problem. I recently asked vw America customer service for copies of their records relating the case. They refused to give them to me, saying they were ¿proprietary. ¿.
Lost power, radio stopped working, a/c starting blowing hot air, epc light came on, battery light came on, abs light came on. Then the car would not crank. I thought the battery was dead so I jumped the car. I made it home then the car would not start the next morning. After examination I found that the fuse box on top of the battery had melted. The wire from the fuse box to the alternator overheated. Was told by two different Volkswagen dealerships in birmingham, al that this was a very common problem. If it is a common problem why is there no recall?.
Alternator wiring harness melted.
I purchased a used certified 2000 Volkswagen Jetta in January 2004, after only one week of purchasing the vehicle, the engine light came on, the accelerator was making a vibrating sound and stalling continuously. Okay, the transmission went out and it had to be replaced at my expense - I purchased a used transmission and then the engine throttle failed and the car wouldn't even start one day - had that replaced at my expense $1700. No the old parts are not available. Okay, there's more, the brakes have been replaced a total of four times within three years, the engine light is still on, air bag light on, brake light on, lights and fog interior fuses and exterior lights have been replaced I don't know how many times, I have put so much money into this vehicle - and it still is running badly. As of today, the car won't move without warming it up first for about 45 minutes fully - when you press on the accelerator without warming it up first - it will stall and make a loud embarrassing noise as if the engine is going to explode - and you have to literally make it move by pressing very hard on the accelerator and praying that it won't just shut off while driving and never start again. My vehicle has 117,000 miles on it had 43,500 when I bought it (I know stupid wasn't I) it was my first vehicle. I know a car is not suppose to last forever, but dam does it have to cost so much to try and keep it running until it dies. Please help me with any information you may have to assist me in this matter.

Like others, I have had the ignition coil replaced. This happened after the warranty expired, of course. I have also had electrical problems with the windows (regulator and motor) for all of them. Now, my check engine light is flashing and the car is sputtering. I know the secondary air intake valve needs replacing but it did not cause problems. Now I'm wondering if something new is wrong??? also, I was having problems with losing coolant and had to continuously replace antifreeze. After fixing what I thought was a small leak the entire system will not produce cool air! this car has been nothing but problems and vw should look into all of these complaints.

I purchased a 01 Volkswagen Jetta in July of 04 and in les than a month it began to stall as I was driving, so I pulled over and it could not start again. I got it towed was told it was my battery and got that replaced, then it happened again a few months later and I was told it was my alternator and got that changed. A few month ago the car would not start again, I was told it was my sensors and got that changed, within 2 months it has happened about 6 times and I've had 3 diagnostic tests that reveal nothing is wrong with the car. I don't know what else to do, al least if I know what the problem is I can fix it. But my car keeps refusing to start( for hours at a time) and everyone tells me the car is ok.

The consumer was driving on the highway when the abs light and the air bag light came on. She pulled off the road and the vehicle stalled . The vehicle would not start back. The mechanic informed the consumer the alternator cable burned the fuse box and cover. The consumer was concerned that if they same part will be put back on the same thing will happen again.
My 1997 Jetta was purchased new in August 1997 in canada. In 1997, the electric moon roof and the electric window had intermittent fault of not operating and were fixed. However after the warranty period one rear electric window could not be operated locally. In oct 28, 2004 the generator was faulty and was replaced by a re-built unit at owner's cost. In oct 30, the ignition switch was replaced at the extended warranty. From oct 30 to 31, 2004, an intermitent fault occurred 5 times on the panel cluster, all readings in the cluster (tachometer, speedometer, temperaure and fuel gauges) drop to zero for a short period of time and resumed normal. The dealer has not yet located the cause of the intermitent fault. If the panel c;uster were found faluty, it would be a very cost repair. The electrical system on my 1997 Jetta are exceeding unreliable with a high intermittent fault. It is the responsiblity of the vwoa to pay the repair cost for such faulty electrical system.
Problems with vehicle's brake lights. On three occasions, the window regulator clips were replaced. Currently the brake light switch needed to be replaced for a third time.
This is a known problem with vw/Audi 1. 8t engines. Affects Audi a4, vw passat/beetle/jetta. Parts back ordered through dealer, they said. Needs to be a recall. Car loses power when moving, will not go faster than 20mph. Potentially dangerous, could result in accident happend many, many times. Also, more than one failiure has happend to a lot of people that I know. Dt.
Brake light switch replaced because cel illuminated indicating a failure of same. After some testing, it became apparent that the brake lights were not illuminating approximately 9 out of 10 times that the brakes were applied. At approximately the same time, the right turn signal began arcing. Replaced the right front signal bulb due to carbon buildup on the bulb. Also replaced the turn signal relay. Right outer cv boot was found to be leaking grease on 5/22/2002 and again on 4/29/2003; in both cases it was replaced. Battery died on 3/10/2003. On 7/9/2002, the center rear seat belt became stuck in its retractor and would not release. Seat belt assembly was replaced. On 10/1/2001, the driver's front window regulator was replaced after the window fell into the door without warning.

This vehicle needed replacement to the alternator twice. The cause of this problem is unknown. In addition the transmission has been repaired once. When this did not work it was then replaced with a rebuilt transmission.
No summary.
Due to a faulty alternator and battery acid spilling onto engine, power steering blew out. Dealer replaced a tube on the battery so the acid can run through the tube and spill onto the ground. Dealer also mentioned that it was not the orginal battery. But consumer never changed battery and bought the vehicle brand new. Please provide further information.
On October 7th, 1997 my 1996 vw Jetta GLS would not start. I had the car towed to the dealer for repair with 28,000 miles on the car and out of the warranty period. The dealer had told me the starter went bad and that I would have to replace the starter. The dealer had provided the starter to me in goodwill and I just paid for labor. On June 1st, 1998 my car again would not start with 42000 miles on the car. I had the car towed to the dealer and they stated that the starter was bad again. I had to replace the starter and then they told me that the ignition switch was bad. They told me that they believed that was the problem with the starters going bad. The warranty on the starter was 12 months or 12,000 miles which had run out on me. I was forced to pay for the full repair. At that time, I filed a grievance with vw and they denied my claim to regain some of my money back because I was on my third starter in 2 years. On December 14, 1998 I took my car to the dealer because there was a screaching sound in the engine compartment when I started the car. The dealer stated to me that the starter was bad and it was out of warranty again so I would have to pay for it with 60,000 miles on the car. I had asked what might be causing the problem this time and they told me I might be holding the key to long which to me means they do not know what the problem is again. In two years I have replaced the starter 4 times. I have paid approxmiately $1178. 15 to replace the starter 4 times and I have no guarantee that this is fixed.
