The contact owns a 2023 Volkswagen Jetta. The contact stated that while his son was driving at an undisclosed speed, he heard an abnormal squeaking emanating from the rear of the vehicle, prompting him to take the vehicle into the dealer for service. No warning lights were illuminated. The vehicle was taken to the dealer, who diagnosed failures with the rear brake pads and rotors, requiring replacement. The vehicle was not repaired. After investigating the failure, the contact related the failure to technical service bulletin vwp-22-18. The manufacturer was notified of the failure, and a case was opened. The failure mileage was 20,000.
February 13 2021 I was driving my car back home from a hike going down a grid I had to break because I was approaching cars and my wheels started to shake. I took my car to the dealership ship to get the breaks inspected early morning. Four hours later I get a call saying that my break pads were burnt and that the rotors were warping and had hot spots. I've had the car for about a year and they are burnt already?? not even my dads GMC that he's had for 7 years hasn't changed the breaks pads since he bought it. Vw is charging me $700+ to change the breaks pads and rotors because it�s� wear and tear� at least that what they told me. I'm feed up having to take my car in every couple months. I've recently had to take it bc the car was low on oil a month and a half after I had just taken it for an oil change. They said that there were no signs of burnt oil or leaks. This is the second time it's has happened. Let's not forget that when I turn to the right the wheel fees like it's hitting something and the steering wheel shakes.

Brakes were making noise took into dealership to be check out and was informed front pads low on pad life and rotors warped and need replacement ASAP. Rotors warped to the point of needing repair, at 30000 miles. The car is kept in arizona in a dry climate, no rain, no hills, mostly highway driving with little braking and for the last 8 months, minimal use due to stay at home orders. Dealer has no explanation as to why these parts failed when they should last to 60000 miles at least. This is absolutely unheard of on a vehicle that is not even 2 years old and only 30000 miles. Volkswagen needs to do some serious research and possibly issue a recall. Dealership quoted $553. 00 for front brake pad & rotors replacement. . .
I was driving at approximately 45 mph when a deer came into the road from the right side. I seen the deer and should have had plenty of time to miss it and come to a stop. I removed the car from 5th gear while using both the clutch and brake pads. Once I applied significant pressure to the brakes the completely locked up, as did the steering wheel. My car collided with the deer and subsequently traveled off the right side of the road in a spin, stopping approximately 40 feet down an embankment. Since then I have had no luck keeping the vehicle running. I have had the alternator, plugs and coil packs, starter, and ignition changed with no remedy. The vehicle will not start.

Vw Jetta wolfsburg edition 2009. 1. I have taken my car auto repair shop over 5x over the times over the past year because the 'engine malfunction' light was going on/off intermittently - on for 3 hours then off, on for 2 days, off. Now the check engine light is permanently illuminated on the dashboard despite multiple engine auto repair services rendered. 2. The abs and eps/asr symbols illuminate and alarm goes off randomly without reason while I am driving 50-65mph on major nyc highways and/or when im driving 15-35 on a residential street. The eps/asr flashes continuously while sounding an alarm for 60 seconds or so, abs remains constant lit and will continue to do so until I am able to stop, turn of the engine, wait a minute, and then restart the car. On highway I have had to drive considerable distance with emergency lights flashing. 3. I was pulled over by a cop at night because one of my tail lights was out. I had no idea that was the case and would have never found out because the "light bulb!" warning was not on, and never came on. I got it fixed 2 days later, still no light bulb signal, my right taillight was replaced. About 2 weeks later the "light bulb!" icon illuminated, I tested and all the lights were working- but the 'lightbulb!' remained lit. About 2 weeks later the lightbulb was off. 4. The aux feature on my car is no longer accessible. Repair shop but they were unable to fix because vw speciality code/ system programming? 5. I have noticed it takes more effort to engage my brakes while driving. I have had my car brake pads replaced at least 2x over the past 6 years (I have driven about 20k miles). Also note - no symbol of emergency brake/ mechanic maintenance / worn brake pads/ automatic transmission/gearbox symbol were illuminated during this event (in February 2018) and none of these symbols had illuminated to this day (April 2018).
While driving (secondary roads, suburbs) noticed 'spongy' brake feel and strange sound from left rear. When I got home (after about 15 min of driving), left rear disc was glowing orange/yellow and smoke was coming from the wheel. Had rear pads replaced/reset. Problem returned 2 weeks later. After a short drive, noticed smell and saw smoke coming from left rear wheel. Lifted car and left rear wheel would not turn. All other wheels are fine.

Took car to dealership for 40,000 mile maintenance/tune up. The dealership called to tell me I needed new rear brake pads. What I don't understand is how the left brake pad can be almost gone and need to be replaced while the other brake pads have 80% of wear left. I asked about this and the manager said they just do that sometimes. Really? one brake pads wears to almost nothing but the other three are still good. This is a serious safety issue and needs to be fixed by Volkswagen immediately.

Left rear brake assembly drags prematurely wearing brake pads and rotor. Worried that it may cause possible fire.
A 1997 Volkswagen Jetta gt, equipped with frontal airbags was in a collision due to the use of aftermarket parts, which included after market ball joints not supplied from the dealer, this part failed after 12. 7km on the highway traveling at 110km/h 65mph, the car steering was very shaky when entering a slight turn on the highway, the front right ball joint had fractured in the hub knuckle and had caused the wheel to collapse, the steering was no longer working because the tires where not on the ground, the car was resting on the rad support and front axle of the car, braking also failed due to the majority of the braking force being on the front wheels that were not making contact with the ground. The car then struck a guard rail 3 times before coming to a complete rest, airbags did not deploy as there was no need due to the angle in which the car struck the rail. Safety belts worked and cars mechanical operation (besides front suspension, and body damage) was still fine. Wheel bearings, brake pads and rotors were all replaced a week previous to crash. Beware non-Volkswagen parts.

I just discovered a brake problem on my wifes vehicle and wanted to bring your attention to it. My wife complained that she was hearing noises coming from the rear wheels and that the brake pedal felt different. I went to check the car and found that the disk brake on the passenger side had been damaged by the pad. The damage occurred on the inside of the disk while the outer part of the disk was ok. In fact, the outer pad of the brake seems to be in great shape and capable of providing many more miles of braking. The disk on the rear driver side does not appear to have any damage nor does it show signs of premature wear. I immediately called the vw dealership here in orlando service department. They indicated that the uneven wear of the brake pad could have been due to the parking brake partially engaged. They also said that the oem brake pads of this vehicle are expected to last about 36,000 miles. Our vehicle currently has 40,000; therefore, there was no immediate cause for concern. I inquired about an appointment to have the brake system inspected for manufacturing problems and they indicated that the warranty for that kind of issue had ended at 36,000 miles. I made a quick search online for related issues and found that a good number of 2009 Jetta drivers have filed safety complaints with the NHTSA about the same problem. This is a mechanical problem that I would expect from other manufacturers and am taken aback that I now see it on a vw. We have come to trust vw engineering and manufacturing to a point that makes it hard to understand we are dealing with something like this on a new car. But, the question still remains about what in this car braking system could possibly cause it to wear so remarkably premature and uneven. We certainly hope this is not something we will have to live with in terms of ownership of vw vehicles. I respectfully request your prompt attention to this and a quick response. Thank you.
2009 Volkswagen Jetta 30,898 miles rear brakes rotors worn and pads gone. Front brakes still have 40,000 miles left on pads, look new according to certified ase brake mechanic. Car does not stop safely. Mechanic was shocked at the brake wear on rear rotors and pads and the extreme wear on the back pads and rotors. Certified ase mechanic advised that front wheel drive cars brakes should wear evenly, not entirely on back brakes. Vehicle not breaking right at low or high speeds. Car still under manufacturer warranty, dealer refuses to replace.
Took my car in for the 20000 mile service. Last service was at 10000 miles. Was told I needed rear brake pads and rotors 300+ dollars. Something is wrong here. I have complained about my brakes squeaking the last three times I brought it in to the dealer. I was never told there was anything wrong. I spoke to Volkswagen customer service the 800 number, told them the issues, they said the brakes are applied on all 4 wheels when stepping on the pedal, this right here tells me something is wrong, if brakes are applied to all wheels then the pads should wear evenly, I was told I would have to replace the rear pads and rotors again before I have to do the front once. I also have complained about the rpm's shooting up very high when I start the car and need to hold the brake hard when I put it in gear or I will lunge because the rpms are so high, after about a muinute I can release the brake and drive because the rpms have settled down. Again I was told this is how the car works.
My 2009 vw Jetta has been prematurely wearing rear disc brakes and experienced a reduction in brake performance. My car has less than 20,000 miles and I already had to take it to the dealer for new rear pads and rotors and it cost me over $400!!!! this is a safety issue because most people that purchase a new vehicle will not take it into the dealership until may 30,000+ miles. Normal driving habits. Mileage on vehicle = approximately 59,500. The rear brake pads and rotors wear at excessive rate on my 2007 Volkswagen Jetta - 2. 5l wolfsburg edition. I've never had a vehicle where the rear brake pads or rotors needed to be replaced before the front pads/ rotors. Vw offered to replace the rear pads and rotors for standard brake replacement cost (no discounted price for premature wear). The rear brakes wearing prematurely presents a potential safety hazard.
2008 Volkswagen Jetta s my car has 36000 miles on it and I have changed the rear brake pads and rotors twice on this vehicle. It is my understanding that this has been a problem with many Jettas around that year. I have luckily avoided many wrecks that I would not have potentially been in if the rear brakes responded as they should. I feel that this is definately a safety issue that needs to be addressed.
I am leasing a 2007 Jetta 2. 5 and just took my car in this morning for it's 35,000 mile tune-up. I was told that my rear brake pads and rotors were at less than 10%. I was not notified 5,000 miles ago that they were low or would be causing issues. Now I'm being told on top of my $250 tune-up, I need to replace all that for 310. This seems to be a documented issue, and I'm highly upset that I would have to deal with this in my lease. In 5,000 miles I went from being "fine" to the pads being ground into the rotors.
I have a 2007 vw Jetta that is wearing out pads to fast. The 1st time they wore out the car had approx 16,000 mi. We were told by the dealership that it was caused by the emergency brake lever not totally releasing. The 2nd time the car was out of warranty with approx. 28,000 mi. But the dealership and vw were willing to replace the pads since they wore due to the brake lever again. But it was suggested that Audi pads be put on because they wore longer than the vw. The mechanic at the time said there was a problem on the Jetta with the lever not always releasing. Now at 54,000 mi the car had to go in for a brake job. Unfortunately the pads wore down to the rivets and scoured the rotors. So I had to pay for pads and turning the rotors. Now vw is saying that they design the brakes to wear in 12,000 to 20,000 miles. I have never heard of pads only lasting that short of time. And if that is so then why am I still using the original front pads. Then they state that they set the car up so the rears do more work then the front to make the front not do all the braking. Yeah, we do that on tractor and trailers to, but not to make the rears do all the braking. I worry because my son uses this car at college and I don't want a call saying he had an accident due to the brakes going out. I worry vw may have problems with the rear pads prematurely wearing and don't know how to fix the problem like Toyota can't fix their problem.
2007 vw Jetta wolfsberg edition brake pads completely worn out at 18k miles. Had dealer replace pads. Pads completely worn again at 25k miles along with rotors. Took to dealer who refused repairs as condition was "normal" and would not cover under warranty. Took to private mechanic who said condition was "not normal" and scheduled followup service after pads were replaced to gauge damage to rear braking mechanisms.
I own a 2007 Jetta with only 26k miles on it. Without any initial warning the rear brakes started to grind on the rear passenger side. I took the car to a specialist who told be one rear brake was grinding on metal and the other was about to get to that point. My front wheel drive brakes were still 100% and not showing any sign of wear. They felt this was very unusual for brakes to do this so soon and suggested I take it to the car dealer to have them check for faulty brakes. I took the car in and they said it was normal for this car to do this so early. I want you to know that I have owned many cars in my lifetime and tend to replace them after about 50k miles. We have never had to replace brakes on any of our cars. This is not normal and should be investigated for a flaw in the model. They also told me the pads in the rear are thinner than the ones in the front. This does not make any sense to me. I am out $350. 00 dollars and will never purchase a vw product again. This was my first experience with this car maker. Additionally this car is a stick shift and I am not a lead foot driver. Now I wonder about the safety issues of their brakes.
Significant rear brake wear on 2009 vw Jetta. My rr brake wore down to metal. Rl brake was at 60% remaining, and front brakes were almost perfect. Vw calls this type of wear "normal. " anybody who has ever driven a car or worked on brakes knows that is a laughable assertion. There is nothing normal about one set of pads completely failing while all others are well within specs. Not only is this annoying, it is dangerous. The car is obviously applying brake pressure to one wheel more than the other three. When this wheels brakes fail, how is the car expected to stop? I have researched this online and found many other vw owners experience the same problem with the same response from vw, which is to blame it on the consumer's driving. In some instances, the brakes worn to metal as early as 14,000 miles, and often fail again in as little as 7 months after replacing.
We own a 2008 vw Jetta. 2. 5 l the Jetta has 25,000 miles and less than year of ownership (purchased at 8000 as program car) rear brakes are completely gone & ruined one rotor -no warning prior? (per dealer) front brakes are fine told rear pads and rotors must be replaced.
I have a 2007 vw Jetta and the rear brake pads have worn out at just 20k miles. I hear this a common problem withh this car and vw refuses to acknowledge problem and charges up $400 to replace rear brake pads.
At 10,759 miles, hearing a metal sound from rear of the car when pressing the brakes, we took our 2007 Volkswagen Jetta to the dealer. Upon inspection they found that the read pads were worn down to the metal at 3mm. They replaced the read pads and l/s rotor and adjusted the parking brake cable. This repair was performed under warranty. At 26,171 miles the rear brakes were worn down again and the rear brake pads and rotors were replaced at a cost of $378. This in my opinion is a design defect and potential safety issue. Rear brakes should not need replacement every 10k to 15k miles.
At approx 22k miles my rear brakes began squealing and then grinding loudly. Was told that I needed new rotors and pads at a cost of approx $500. Was told by independent service shop that the brakes not only were extremely worn down, but the wear was fairly uneven as well. I have never heard of brakes wearing out so quickly. It is absurd to think that I will have to do this every 12-18 months.
I have a 2007 vw Jetta. At 27,000 miles I had to have rear brake pads replaced and rotors turned. Brakes were rubbing metal to metal. I think it is a premature brake wear problem. Do not know if it is faulty parts or what. Dealer says it is normal to have rear pads wear out with that little of mileage. I am 55yrs. Old and I have never seen that with any car. I hope it does not cause anyone to have an accident.
Purchased a new '09 vw Jetta sdn 2. 5 l s and the second day I had it, I had to take to service dept. The door seal from drivers door was coming off, the car would smell like burning plastic and I noticed after 3rd trip ( in 2 days ) the rear brakes were "glowing" red hot. They said they could figure it out and said it may be a plastic coating they put on brake pads to keep rust from building up on the ship overseas! after the brakes constantly squeaking and having to take my new car in 2 more time with every excuse known to man , I was mistakenly told it was a defect and they changed them at no charge. My brakes are again going out and it has only been about 6-9 months. The concern is that they have not fixed the root of the problem as well as a seat belt indicator which has been faulty. I have had them make me take it in 3 times for that ( first time they couldn't duplicate the problem, so I was told to bring it in again ) and one passenger side was replaced but it is still happening and I fear that the combined brake and seat belt/ airbag issues could be dangerous! also troubling is in the last few months the drivers side rear door would not unlock by any means for on 3 occasions (the last which I called vw service to make an appointment for and never got a return phone call) the last time it was unusable door for 2 weeks then just started working again. It has not been attended to, but my fear is again, in a accident if someone was back there they may get trapped in car.
The rear brakes prematurely wore out on my 2006 vw Jetta tdi. This occurred at 27,000 miles and the brakes were down to metal with no brake material left on the pads which in turn ruined the rotors. The dealer had to replace the pads and rotors at a cost of $341 to me plus tax. Since front brakes do 70-80% of the work the rear brakes should not have worn out this early, certainly not before the front brakes. This indicates a problem with the front brakes that the dealer and manufacturer refuse to acknowledge. I could see the premature failure of the rear brakes or increased braking force on the rear brakes being the potential cause for an accident and potentially injury.

Parking brake was not adjusted properly from the factory causing premature brake pad wear. Too soon to be caught during service intervals thereby may have caused brake failure leading to an incident and/or caused damage.
Rear brakes wear unevenly (driver side rear pads have worn at an incredible rate) rear brakes also lock up easily while braking on loose pavement or gravel.
I purchased a new 2007 Volkswagen Jetta in December 06 from trend motors rockaway NJ. The week of Feb 18th 2008, my brakes felt mushy. I do not put many miles on my car because I work close to home (4 miles one way) the car has 17,000 miles, I took my car into the dealer 02/20/08 and let the dealer know what was going on with my brakes. I was informed that the back brakes need to be replaced (rotors & pads). I could not believe the back brakes wore out before the front? I never had this happen to me. The cost of the repair would be $380. 00 and it was not covered under the warranty. I asked if there was any defects on the back brakes because I have read there was. They said they did not know of any defects and they gave me a number to call (customer relations to see they could assist me). I voiced my complaint with customer relations and gave the same information. I was told that I needed to let them talk to the dealer and the latest that I would hear from them was the next day. I just can?t believe that the back brakes would wear before the fronts? I am a safe cautious driver and I can't understand this? this is highly unusual. I have purchased several cars, Toyota, Mazda, fords and have never experienced anything like this. Your assistance would be greatly appreciated.
At 20,000 miles my leased 2007 vw Jetta's rear brakes started squeaking and grinding. Took it to dealership and was told that the rear pads and rotors need to be replaced ($350!). I've never had a car with brakes problems this early, specially a front wheel drive car. I did some research and I see that this seems to be a manufacturing defect and vw should acknowledge it and fix it at no cost to the customer.
The rear brakes have been wearing down abnormally. The rear rotors and brake pads have been replaced at 20,000 and 40,000 miles.
