The contact owns a 2001 Volkswagen Jetta. While attempting a u-turn at 15 mph, the vehicle lost all abs and traction control ability. The vehicle was taken to a dealer and they stated that his VIN was not included in the recall. The contact would be responsible for the repair costs. The vehicle has not been repaired. The recall number and description were unknown. The failure mileage was 96,239 and current mileage was 98,239. Updated 06/09/08.

My wife's 2003 vw Jetta tdi brakes will aggressively lock-up when lightly depressed for slowing down or coming to a slow stop. The problem is intermittent and will occur without warning. When the brakes lock up they can only be released after placing your foot under the pedal and forcing the pedal backwards. In the event another diver follows too close, the failure will result in a rear end collision potentially causing serious injuries to both parties. After experiencing the defect the car was immediately taken to the vw dealer for service and we received a "no fault found report". Now the problem has become severe and is a major safety concern for my wife and I. Earlier this year, the alternator pulley bearings seized and the pulley was ejected from the alternator causing damage to other engine components in the serpentine system.

While making a left turn into the parking lot, I braked but the vehicle didn't slow down, and I hit a concrete pole. The only thing I heard was drumming noise and was not able to brake hard, because it kind of locked.

I own a 2002 vw Jetta tdi. Three times now I have had a serious incident with my brakes. While driving at low speeds, under 25 mph, the brake pedal has pulled itself to the floor and sharply applied the brakes while I was driving. My foot was on the accelerator while this occurred. There is also a loud pressure release sound coming from the brake pedal after it applied itself. This happens intermittently and the dealer has not been able to correct it yet.

A few weeks ago I was driving my 02 Jetta tdi and was sitting at a light with the brakes applied. Once the light turned green I release the pedal and it had a hydraulic release sound, like a swishing noise. The brakes were still on but the pedal had released. I tapped the pedal and they released. Over the course of my drive home every time I applied the brakes the pedal would suck all the way to the floor and make that swishing sound. The car would jolt as the brakes applied full force. Other times they would stay applied and I would have to tap the pedal and then they would release. I got home and later decided to test the car out again. And it did nothing! the car drove fine for a couple weeks. Today the problem started again suddenly. Advice. Help. Thanks.
No warning lights illuminated. Periodically the braking pressure was released and a pedal pulse was felt while stopping. The dealer stated that the problem to the abs pump leaked into the abs module. The consumer's daughter was unable to stop in a parking lot as a result of the brakes releasing causing her to hit another vehicle. The person in the other vehicle sought medical treatment.

While driving at any speed front brakes locked up.
While braking 55 mph vehicle jerked, causing extended stopping distance. Dealership was notified, but did not resolve the problem.
Whooping noise from brakes of new vw jettta with poor compression and braking. Clunking form gear box. Failure of brake may lead to avoidable accident in the future dealer changed brake booster but this did not help. Dealer unable to fix after several attempts.
Vehicle was towed twice because the defect described in the abs ecu recall 02v03100 occurred while driving. This vehicle was not includedin the recall due to model year and VIN.
While driving 45 mph driver applied brakes and pedal went to the floor. This caused the vehicle to skid into a tree. Both air bags did not deploy.
In attempt to stop the brake pedal went to the floor and the emergency brake had to be used to stop. After pumping the brakes several times partial braking was restored. Upon examination by the local dealer it was determined that the vaccum pump had failed and the vaccuum hoses were full of holes. The car is a 2002 vw Jetta tdi (deisel) and had 52000 miles at the time of incident. At 50000 miles the car was inspected at the dealer according to vw specifications and the defect was overlooked. Volkswagen of America fails to understand the serious nature of this problem and fails to accept any responsibility. I am concerned that there may be many other cars on the road facing the same serious dangerous condition.
Had problems prior with brake pedal vibrating when depressed slightly and also during turns with loss of brake power. Abs system replaced by local dealer. Had an incident after replacement. Going down a hill at 45 mph with a right bend, applied brakes. Same vibration in brake pedal, no braking power and steering kicked car sharply to left and ended up off the road. Then everything seemed to work again but still experiencing problems car going in for more service yet again. Dt.
Smoldering fire put out with fire extinguisher. May be related to antilock brake system recall. Will contact dealer and manufacturer.
Consumer received recall 02v031000 on abs. On 2 Mar 2002 dealer set an appointment for June 28, 2002 due to parts not available. On 12 may 2002 while driving 15 mph consumer applied brakes, and pedal went to the floor, no braking ability. Damage to vehicle was $ 4000. 00, no injuries.
First dealership completed recall 02v031000 incorrectly. Had another dealer check it. Other dealership was charging consumer to fix the other dealerships error.
When applying brakes in snow or icy conditions it causes brakes to lock up or freezes up. Vehicle was taken to dealer, and they could not find any thing wrong, but the problem is reoccurring. Feel free to provide any further information.
Car accelerated from 5 mph until hit the car in front. Brake didn't work. This happened once before. Dealer insulted driver instead of a followup.

While driving the posted speed limit, I attempted to slow down in preparation for a right hand turn. I turned on my signal, and slowly began to hit my brakes. As I hit my brakes, it began to to engage and then I felt a "pop" in the brake pedal. I hit the brake a little harder and nothing happened. I then began pumping the brakes in an attempt to stop the car. My attempt to stop the car failed and I hit a parked car at 30mph. Moderate damage done to passenger front and quarterpanel of car. Door wedged into car braking some glass on passenger side. Upon impact, no airbags deployed whatsoever. I hit the windshield with my head and spidered the glass upon impact. Impact jolted the car in such a way, it snaped my inside mirror off the front windshield.
While vehicle still under warranty, brake malfunction ocurred. Brake pedal would become soft when pressed down on, sinking to floorvery fast, emitting an air release type sound, simular to anti lock brake release sound, but without the controled spurts, the presure release happens all at once, causing lock up of brakes. Dealership was never able to fix problem, it returned after vehicle was out of warranty, and now happens on most warm days, multiple times a day.
While driving down at steep incline vehicle would not stop. Also, expierenced a problem while traveling at 50 mph, consumer tried to brake, and pedal went to the floor.
While driving approximately 35 mph consumer pressed on brakes to slow, and brake pedal hit the floor, but vehicle did not stop. This has caused vehicle to move out of control and hit a curb. Consumer and passenger sustained minor injuries.
While approaching a traffic stop applied brake pedal, and all of a sudden vehicle commenced to accelerate and rear ended vehicle in front dealer/ manufacturer notified and received a case number. Please feel free to provide any further details.
While driving at approximately 25 mph and after applying brakes rearended a mid-sized truck. Upon impact, dual airbags did not deploy which could have caused injuries.

Abs brakes lock up/fail.
Rotors began making noise around 6000 miles. Dealer stated that there was a rust buildup despite the car being driven daily. The noise has become more pronounced with increased mileage.
Vehicle experienced the same defect with abs as stated in recall 02 v 031 000, but this vehicle was not included due to VIN.
I bought 2002 Jetta from sunnyvale Volkswagen this April and last week I came to know that a recall on the abs control unit (NHTSA campaign 02v031000) applies to my model. I immediately contacted Volkswagen of America, inc. If my car has the defective abs unit or not but they said they had no idea. They said they cannot tell from VIN or all the information I provided to them. I contacted them again to confirm if what they had told me was correct or not and they admitted my car still has the defective abs control unit. The recall date was 02/04/2002 so sunnyvale Volkswagen must have known that my car had the defective abs unit when they sold it to me. The defect not only decreased my car's resell value but also put my my life in danger. When I asked david bousheh, the sale associate assigned to me, about 'safety first', he said "like, like, seatbelt". That's it. Maybe he just wanted to skip the subject because of the abs unit. I did not buy it if I was informed of the recall that can result in a fire. My car was on sale and according to one of the managers (his name is saiid, not sure about spelling), they had 3 Jetta's on sale so I think there are two more Jetta owners that probably do not know about the recall. All owners should receive recall notice no matter when they buy a car, before or after the recall date. Dealerships like sunnyvale Volkswagen put car owners and other drivers' lives in danger. Also, customer support people at Volkswagen of America, inc. Need more training (I'm assuming they didn't give me false information knowingly).
Consumer called complaining about gas recirculation valve ( egr valve). Vehicle won't accelerate even though she wa s stepping all the way on the gas pedal. Dealer was contacted, and stated that the vehicle was out of warranty. Had to replace brakes and rotors at 35000 miles, which she thought that it was not usually normal on any vehicle.
Consumer took the vehicle in for recall 02 v 031 000 repairs, however dealer did not honor recall letter. Dealer refused to honor recall because of after market items in vehicle. . Consumer stated he replaced the cd player with an after market cd player, consumer was informed that there would be a charge to analyze the abs.
In addition to above-key entry sporadically works, car under cover torn off two times parking in regular parking lot, chair will not stay in adjusted position and dealership represented that extended warranty covered same as factory warranty, which it does not. Very dissatisfied with purchase. Believe car is unsafe and looking to replace. Believe car has serious electrical problems. Dealership refused to give explanation for unusual burning of oil etc.
While traveling in snow and when depressing brakes vehicle continued to travel, brakes froze. Please provide further information.
When the consumer attempted to apply the brake, the pedal "shot" all the way to the floor, which left the vehicle with no braking ability. The pedal eventually recovered and consumer pulled into a parking lot for safety. While parking, the consumer attempted to apply the brakes again and the pedal "shot" to the floor a second time. Dealer had not been able to duplicate or determine cause. The dealer was unable to remedy the problem. On the way home, the problem occurred again while in traffic and to avoid an accident, the consumer ran into the ditch.
