2 Service Brakes problem of the 2021 Volkswagen Jetta

Failure Date: 09/02/2025

The rear brake pads on my 2021 Volkswagen Jetta have worn out prematurely twice by 20,000 miles. The first replacement occurred at only 8,006 miles in April 2023. At that time, Volkswagen acknowledged the problem and provided “goodwill” coverage of 50% since my vehicle was only one month outside of the rear brake pad limited warranty extension. Now at approximately 20,846 miles in September 2025, the rear pads have worn out again and required replacement. Volkswagen has refused to provide any assistance this time. Normally, front brake pads wear faster than the rear. In this case, the rear pads are failing far earlier than expected, which creates a potential safety issue since brake performance is being compromised at very low mileage. Volkswagen has already acknowledged this defect by issuing the warranty extension for 2020–2023 Jettas, but coverage expired by time, not mileage, leaving owners like me with repeated failures and no support. When I raised the issue with my dealership, they suggested that the premature wear is due to the emergency brake always being engaged when the car is parked. This explanation does not make sense, since pads do not normally wear when the car is stationary. The fact that vw created a warranty extension for this exact problem shows this is a design defect, not a misuse issue. This issue has been confirmed by a Volkswagen dealer and independent service centers, and is well-documented among other owners. If the pads continue to wear this quickly, it poses a recurring safety risk and results in abnormally high repair costs for a critical safety component. I am reporting this so NHTSA is aware that the defect continues to affect owners even beyond the limited warranty extension and goodwill offers, and that a long-term solution is needed.

3 Service Brakes problem of the 2024 Volkswagen Jetta

Failure Date: 08/28/2025

Brakes make loud noise when I come to stop when leaving highway. Rear pads are at 2mm as of 8/28/2025 when they were replaced in on 5/14/2025. Repairs were performed by dealership on 5/14/2025 but they did not replace the rotors, they only replaced the rear pads.

4 Service Brakes problem of the 2009 Volkswagen Jetta

Failure Date: 08/18/2025

The contact owns a 2009 Volkswagen Jetta. The contact stated that while driving at 50 mph, the vehicle stalled. Several unknown warning lights were illuminated. The contact was able to pull over to the side of the road. The contact stated that the failure had been recurring while driving. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic, where it was diagnosed and determined that the abs module had failed and needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The contact stopped driving the vehicle due to safety concerns. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 86,000.

5 Service Brakes problem of the 2024 Volkswagen Jetta

Failure Date: 08/13/2025

I just got this 2024 Jetta sport 6 speed manual and tried getting up the drive that's slightly inclined and the brake assist would not disengage or the fuel was cut after it didn't progress then dies. It is possible to power through the brake assist but it will cause premature wear on the clutch, flywheel as well as the rear e brake with all this wireless tech on the brakes, throttle can't figure it out so take it back.

6 Service Brakes problem of the 2015 Volkswagen Jetta

Failure Date: 07/28/2025

Bottom line: brakes failed to stop car on decline slope. Situation: driver depressed brake and hit start button. With brakes still depressed the driver put the car into gear. However, the gear jolted and the car began rolling forward. Driver attempted to press the brakes without any response. The car rolled to a stop without any control over braking or accelerating. Once stopped the driver put the car back into park and pressed the start button. The car then ignited and started. After starting, pressure came back into the brake pedal and the engine revved when the accelerator was pressed. No issues were detected after the car started. Available for inspection upon request. Safety: the safety of the driver and surrounding persons was endangered due to the vehicle’s inability to stop when the brakes are depressed. Reproduction: the problem has not been reproduced by a dealer, however a second reddit user describes a similar situation happening in their Jetta. Inspection: part has not been inspected since the incident but was regularly checked before. Warning: no warning lights were on before the event occurred. Car seemed to operate normally.

7 Service Brakes problem of the 2021 Volkswagen Jetta

Failure Date: 07/26/2025

On steep hills the car automatically holds the brake for a predetermined amount of time, I believe 2. 5 to 3 sec. I have a manual transmission car and when its time to move the brake assist won't release no matter what until the time interval is satisfied. The problem this creates is a stall issue. Its hard to coordinate when to depress the clutch and give gas. Too early and you lead to premature clutch wear or clutch overheating. Too late and the car stalls and you have to restart it. This is very because now you have to restart the car and can cause an accident.

8 Service Brakes problem of the 2011 Volkswagen Jetta

Failure Date: 07/24/2025

Abs control module total failure no warnings appeared prior to the total failure of the abs control module to indicate that the car needed servicing. Abs would have failed in an emergency braking according to the dealership. Just driving the car without knowing the abs had issues put my family at risk. After the lights appeared I took it to the dealership who performed the diagnostics and determined that the abs needed total replacement and advised that the car was not safe to drive. Lights appeared after the failure. There were no brake issues' warning lights prior to the failure. For at least 8 years I've complained that my brakes screeched and for years I was told that my brakes were fine. I've had diagnostics done on the car and not once were issues found with the abs system. To realize that my car has no warning indicator for a major safety feature such as the brakes until that abs components' total failure is horrifying. Yet when my tires need air a light appears. There were previous abs recalls on other volkwagen Jetta models/years that my car VIN was not part of.

9 Service Brakes problem of the 2011 Volkswagen Jetta

Failure Date: 07/14/2025

Driving on freeway (speed around 70mph) out of nowhere I start smelling strange burning smell then about 1 minute later the car brakes lock up in the front and I loose control of car but luckily it was in light traffic and I regained control enough to get it off to the shoulder. I got out to address the issue and notice the front tires smoking alot and it was at night and the inside (rotor, brake caliper, and rim were glowing bright red and the heat was melting the tire". Then I notice a flame and grabbed a bottle water and applied the tire and extinguish it. I sat there for a good 30 minutes to let everything cool down and the car would not move. "this is a serious saftey recall" and if it's not it should be addressed a. S. A. P please address this issue with volkswagon! and have this serious saftey issue corrected thank you.

10 Service Brakes problem of the 2017 Volkswagen Jetta

Failure Date: 06/09/2025

Abs unit complete was malfunctioning per Volkswagen's inspection. When this malfunctions it can lead to a loss of its anti-lock braking function, potentially causing wheel lock-up during braking, longer stopping distances, and reduced vehicle control, especially on slippery surfaces. Additionally, other driver assistance features relying on the abs module, like traction control and automatic braking, may also be affected. Other 2017 models had a recall on this part but I was told my VIN did not. There were warning lights on dash when this occurred. This was confirmed by vw.

11 Service Brakes problem of the 2010 Volkswagen Jetta

Failure Date: 05/19/2025

When you turn on the vehicle, the abs and traction light illuminates. The light that says "brake" also illuminates and the vehicle beeps 3 times. When driving the vehicle, the red light "brake" flashes constantly, while the abs and traction control light remains illuminated but no flashes. The dealership says it's a fault abs module and hydraulic pump assembly. I researched and found a Volkswagen safety recall code: 45f2 (published March 17, 2017) that seems very applicable to my vehicle. Safety concerns include but are not limited to the following: loss of vehicle control, failure to brake properly, auto engagement of brakes not by the driver, etc. All safety concerns may cause my life or the life of another individual.

12 Service Brakes problem of the 2022 Volkswagen Jetta

Failure Date: 05/15/2025

- rear brake pads. They were replaced at 22,464 miles under warranty due to premature wear, and at just 34,170 miles (less than 12,000 miles later), they are already down to 4mm. Yes, the component is available for inspection upon request. - the rapid and premature wear of the rear brake pads reduces braking efficiency and increases stopping distance, particularly in emergency situations or adverse weather. If this wear continues unnoticed, it could lead to brake failure or reduced rear braking function, creating a serious safety hazard for myself, passengers, and others on the road. - yes. The original issue was diagnosed and confirmed by safford brown vw in richmond, va in January 2024. The dealership replaced the rear pads under warranty at that time and stated the wear was premature. Those same pads are now down to 4mm after less than 12,000 miles. - yes. Volkswagen authorized the original replacement under warranty due to premature wear. The issue has now recurred, and I contacted Volkswagen customer care directly, who declined to offer a solution and redirected me back to the dealership. - no warning lamps or messages appeared. The only symptom is the abnormal wear itself, confirmed by a technician upon routine inspection. The pads were previously found to be under 2mm in 2024, and now, less than 12k miles later, are already down to 4mm—far faster than what is typical for rear pads.

14 Service Brakes problem of the 2023 Volkswagen Jetta

Failure Date: 04/09/2025

Rear brakes worn prematurely with only 16k miles on a brand new purchased 2023 vw Jetta. Dealer said, vw will not replace until the brakes at 2mm and the warranty will expire next month and I will end up paying for it out of my pocket.

15 Service Brakes problem of the 2019 Volkswagen Jetta

Failure Date: 03/24/2025

It was a hot day and I went to start my 2019 Jetta, it sent me a warning code to safely stop the vehicle and then all electrical shut off but the engine then proceeded to stall in place and not want to start back up. I got it to restart and the parking break locked up. I turned it off again and restarted it and managed to get the parking break off after several attempts. I had to have it towed as it was clearly not safe to drive. As soon as the temperature dropped the car was completely fine no electrical errors making me think this is similar to other Volkswagen vehicle issues. There is no recall in place but this is extremely unsafe for me to drive and I just purchased the vehicle.

18 Service Brakes problem of the 2023 Volkswagen Jetta

Failure Date: 01/13/2025

The rear brake calipers are not fully opening, causing the pads to drag on the rotors. The dealership has replaced the pads per instructions from vw engineering; however, per the dealership, they state that it's a software problem causing the calipers to drag against the rotors and vw hasn't issued any software updates to fix the known problem. They did "extend" the brake warranty for consumables to 2 years/24000 miles at no cost the customer however, the software problem has not been fixed and vw is ignoring the problem. The front breaks are also gripping and causing a varnish build up and there is no fix for that problem, either. I have a 2023 vw Jetta se with only 14,362miles and I've had to have the breaks serviced 3 times due to the breaking problem.

19 Service Brakes problem of the 2009 Volkswagen Jetta

Failure Date: 01/11/2025

Break fluid is leaking from abs cylinder and breaks are too soft to apply.

20 Service Brakes problem of the 2024 Volkswagen Jetta

Failure Date: 01/08/2025

My 2024 Jetta with only 14,776 miles had rear brakes and rotors that were unsafe and worn out. They had to be replaced to avoid the possibility of brake failure and an accident. I paid $453. 34 out of pocket. Vw knows there is a defect with the rear brakes on this generation Jettas wearing out prematurely. They are covering these parts under only certain VIN and production dates but they admit all Jettas are subject to this wearing out of brakes beginning wiith the 2022 model year.

21 Service Brakes problem of the 2023 Volkswagen Jetta

Failure Date: 01/03/2025

Rear brake pads wore out quick.

22 Service Brakes problem of the 2022 Volkswagen Jetta

Failure Date: 01/03/2025

Have had the car to dealer numerous times for brake noise issues. Now front and rear brakes make a growling and squealing noise especially when they are cold . Squealing and growling sounds are severe especially when backing up and the brakes are cold. All four brakes make squealing noise noticeable scraping sound to rear brakes when brakes are not being applied. Rear brakes replaced twice. Car has just over 24,000 mi.

23 Service Brakes problem of the 2024 Volkswagen Jetta

Failure Date: 12/11/2024

My car was purchased in December 2023 it was new with approximately 4 miles on the car I’m retired I use the car mostly for doctors appointments personal use church in August 2024 I took my car in for 10,000 mile oil change at the time I was told that my brakes were in fair condition the rear brakes so in December 2024 I took my car to a Volkswagen service and another independent a car service center and was told basically that all the parts on my rear brakes needed to be replaced I thought this was highly unusual this is not the first new car I have owned and not the first Volkswagen I have owned I don’t drive every day I really wish you would answer me back quickly because spending between six and $700 for rear brakes on a new car is excessive I would appreciate it if you would respond quickly.

24 Service Brakes problem of the 2017 Volkswagen Jetta

Failure Date: 12/09/2024

The contact owns a 2017 Volkswagen Jetta. The contact stated while driving 20 mph, the brake pedal was depressed and travelled down to the floorboard; however, the vehicle responded as needed. The traction control warning light was illuminated. The vehicle was taken to mavis tire and brakes, where it was determined that the brake master cylinder needed to be replaced due to brake fluid leaking. The mechanic related the failure to NHTSA campaign number: 20e064000 (service brakes, hydraulic). Additionally, the mechanic flushed the brake fluid and referred the contact to the dealer for assistance. The dealer was contacted and informed the contact that the VIN was not included in the recall. The vehicle was not repaired and remained in the possession of the independent mechanic. The contact contacted the part manufacturer, tenneco automotive and left a voicemail. The failure mileage was approximately 84,000.

25 Service Brakes problem of the 2021 Volkswagen Jetta

Failure Date: 11/18/2024

Went in for service appointment at 27000 miles. I was told rear brake pads needed replacing. Upon questioning this as I have never had to replace a set of brake pads with such little miles, and I am not a hard braker, the service advisor stated that vw extended to warranty for the brake pads to 2 years, 24,000 miles. Vw claims to have lower cost maintance than other car brands. They also never sent me a notice on this brake issue, and they are supposed to perform a multi-point inspection with each service appointment, which they failed to do at my prior service appointment or else this issue would have been caught and remedied. The brakes have been working as normal, making no noise. I would have not known they were worn down to 1mm like the service advisor told me until it resulted in catastrophic failure leading to a crash and possibly death.

26 Service Brakes problem of the 2024 Volkswagen Jetta

Failure Date: 11/11/2024

Vehicle is brand new currently has 13,000 miles, only highway driving, purchased car new in April 2024. Rear brakes wore down prematurely. Needed to replace rear brakes and rotors.

27 Service Brakes problem of the 2022 Volkswagen Jetta

Failure Date: 11/02/2024

Rear brakes replaced twice on warranty. The car only has 24,000. Car remains with loud chattering brakes on all 4 brakes especially when brakes are cold. Especially loud chattering and squealing brakes still exist especially on rear brakes. Issue with a fuel valve needing to be replaced on warranty. Eps engine light on dash. Driver's door widow regulator malfunction for door not going down with one touch. Replaced under warranty. Dealer for vw stated that they would no longer do any brake repairs. Obviously, the material being used for brake materials is cheap and doesn't last. Have had situation with the main radio information screen going blank on 2 occasions and having to do a hard reboot to get it to work. Cause unknown for screen totally going blank.

28 Service Brakes problem of the 2019 Volkswagen Jetta

Failure Date: 11/01/2024

My manual transmission clutch went to the floor without warning and the car suddenly was inoperable. Bay vw in great neck, NY performed a $4,000 repair. . I picked uo the car today and within five miles drive the clutch failed again and the car was inoperable. In December 2022 the same thing happened while driving on [xxx] . I was in the passing lane and lost complete control of the car except for steering. I had an elderly passenger with dementia and it was providential that we weren't in an accident. It's now three breakdowns of the same kind. Obviously, another part is defective causing these operational failures. It's a safety risk and the three two vw repair shops, on three occasions, have not been able to detect it. I am afraid for my safety and that of my passengers. I can provide the repair invoices. Please look into this. Information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u. S. C. 552(b)(6).

29 Service Brakes problem of the 2024 Volkswagen Jetta

Failure Date: 10/23/2024

The hill start assist is overly aggressive in these cars. It doesn't release for 3 seconds after foot brake is not applied. Once it stalls the car and your panicked. Then you apply foot brake to restart the car you get to wait another 3 seconds or you stall again. It is inconsistent in pressure applied and dangerous. I have been driving manual transmission vehicles for near 40 years. Perhaps if I lived in san francisco it might be of use but, with this activating at the slightest grade it is dangerous! look around the vw forums I'm not the only person to think so.

30 Service Brakes problem of the 2022 Volkswagen Jetta

Failure Date: 09/27/2024

I have a 2022 vw Jetta and my breaks lasted 13,400 miles, I have a daily commute of 11 miles and I believe this is not a normal condition on a car. The delaer refused to replace the breaks despite the eviden condition of low quality. In addition I have a problem in my door where the door does not close in case of really cold weather. I have a video but it I cannot upload.

31 Service Brakes problem of the 2022 Volkswagen Jetta

Failure Date: 09/24/2024

My car only had twelve thousand miles on it when the problem started with the rear brakes. They were at an eight and in less than two weeks time they started dragging not fully disengaging and went down to a one. Screeching. I looked it up and seems to be a common problem. If it is common and vw is aware of it not only affecting my specific model but other models as well. I believe it should be addressed and figure out a way to stop it. It messes with my fuel economy as well as goes thru pads way sooner than what they should. Which is gonna be costly over time.

32 Service Brakes problem of the 2022 Volkswagen Jetta

Failure Date: 08/11/2024

The rear brake pads needed to be replaced when the car only had 30,530 miles. The dealer stated the pads and rotors needed to be replaced. At a different shop, they turned the rotors and replaced the rear brake pads. The service tech said he had never seen a car with such worn pads with so few miles.

33 Service Brakes problem of the 2021 Volkswagen Jetta

Failure Date: 08/01/2024

As you park the car the epb faulty parking brake engages without being told to engage.

34 Service Brakes problem of the 2021 Volkswagen Jetta

Failure Date: 07/23/2024

Vehicle was brought in for 30k miles service with vibration during braking. Under inspection the dealership condemned all the brake rotors and pads (on 4 corners). The technician associated this failure to "temperature" pointing at radial marks on the rotors. This is clearly incorrect as the marks on the rotor are corrosion marks, including a corrosion ring around the central area of the disk. Vw has already extended the warranty on the rear brakes for a known issue with premature failure of the brakes. Upon calling vw corporate they refused to extend the warranty or analyze the case again.

35 Service Brakes problem of the 2020 Volkswagen Jetta

Failure Date: 07/06/2024

My brakes have always sounded weird to me. But the dealer and my mechanic assured me that they were fine. On Saturday 7/6/24, I noticed a horrible grinding noise. I took it to my mechanic and was told that due to a faulty brake caliper the passenger side front inner brake pad has gone metal to metal. I can see that there is a recall on the calipers for 2020 vw Jetta but it doesn't show up for my VIN #. I am having to pay $541. 07 and feel that if this is a recall I shouldn't have to pay.
