6 Engine Cooling System problem of the 2016 Volkswagen Jetta

Failure Date: 01/17/2016

This is the base model s automatic transmission 1. 4 tsi. This vehicle doesn't have a gauge for measuring the temperature. Unable to make a decision promptly if the car starts to heat is a safety problem. The car apparently has a mechanism to lower the rpms if the car starts heating and has a light indicating that something is wrong with the cooling system but it is unacceptable that in 2016 you can't see the engine temerature. I didn't notice this while testing the car before doing the purchase and thought it was a matter of configuration but confirmed this with the manual. This car has 85 miles and when running through a slope in rural area if it decides to down shift theres a bump or a knock in the transmutation as if you were abusing the car and the motor or transmission mounts can't hold its force. It really feels awful when this happens. This should happen smoothly but it doesn't. I understand that it will make its own decision of what is the best gear in order to provide enough torque to manage the slope but this is not normal. This could be a sing of future failure and of course an accident can occur. Would like this two points to be investigated by NHTSA.

7 Engine Cooling System problem of the 2015 Volkswagen Jetta

Failure Date: 11/10/2015

The contact owns a 2015 Volkswagen Jetta. The contact received notification of NHTSA campaign number: 15v705000 (engine and engine cooling, service brakes, hydraulic) and the dealer was unable to provide the part for the recall repair in a reasonable amount of time frame. The contact called the dealer for months and was unable to determine when the vehicle would be serviced under the recall. The manufacturer was contacted and was unable to determine when the part would be supplied to the dealer for the recall repair. VIN tool confirms parts not available.

10 Engine Cooling System problem of the 2000 Volkswagen Jetta

Failure Date: 07/23/2010

I purchased a 2000 vw Jetta on 6/16/10. Two weeks after purchase, the vehicle began to have problems & since I have had the vehicle, it has had to have the following repairs: 2 fans, abs sensor would come on & lock up the wheels, so the system had to be unplugged, coolant system had to be replaced, a transmission replaced & a certified transmission specialist found it had been taken out prior & 4 cyl parts were used in a 6 cyl vehicle, & thermostat had to be replaced. The cost of repairs to date are approx. $5,200 & I only paid $4,995 for the vehicle. This vehicle is not safe and should not have been sold in the condition it was in. The seller failed to disclose that the vehicle had underlying problems after I inquired several times. The business should be held responsible for selling an unsafe vehicle and I wonder how many other vehicles the business has sold like this. I have this vehicle in for repairs more than I have been able to drive it & when I purchased it, the seller was aware I needed a reliable vehicle to get to the kidney transplant very quickly.

12 Engine Cooling System problem of the 2006 Volkswagen Jetta

Failure Date: 07/11/2010

Bought used Volkswagen Jetta turbo. After one year of perfect functioning, the interior lights and air conditioning have totally stopped functioning. Mechanic can't figure it out. Additionally, trunk latch would not latch upon opening trunk.

13 Engine Cooling System problem of the 2004 Volkswagen Jetta

Failure Date: 06/12/2010

Car began to stutter and shake like it was running out of gas. Shortly after I had an epc light that would flash on every time I got up to speed and it would start the stuttering sound again. After several costly trips to dealership they discovered it was a coolant migration problem. Where a defective part that vw knows about leaks coolant in to the wire harness. Coolant can migrate throughout all electrical routes throughout the car. This has been a problem since 1998 and vw will not do a recall or reimburse for the work. If you have electrical problems with your vw this is most likely the cause. We have also had problems with taillights blowing very frequently. This can be a cause of coolant migrating through the wires.

14 Engine Cooling System problem of the 1997 Volkswagen Jetta

Failure Date: 04/11/2010

It was at night rainy and cold. I turned on the heater and defroster because my car windows and whole inside of cabin were obscures by a fog. My defroster cleared the back window but all others not so I rolled down the windows and shut down the heater. I waited a while and used clothing to wipe the window. This was the third time in 6 weeks appx. I did turn on the fan alone to push brown fog out of the car. Today I checked my fluids the coolant was half gone in the reservoir so I topped it up. I saw on line vwof America has helped people in the past with a good will heater core but they told me 4-152004 that they would not help me. That is where I'm at no $ and I need my car for work. Thank you.

15 Engine Cooling System problem of the 2009 Volkswagen Jetta

Failure Date: 12/29/2009

My vehicle didn't start after 12 days of sitting, it also had a rough start (no start followed by driver assisted start) after sitting for about 9 hours. I believe the rough start was a related to the no start. Date of no start: 12/29/10 location: philadelphia offsite airport lot mileage: > 20,000 got my 20k service two days prior to parking it on Dec. 17. It snowed 22" on the 19th and then throughout the rest of the days it would thaw, freeze, rain etc. It rained approximately 3" during that time. Got back Dec. 29th at night. The engine tried to crank once and then didn't do much afterward. Had it towed to the dealer (vw of langhorne) and they found water in the cylinders by removing the glow plugs and manually cranking the engine. After a couple of days messing with the dealer they finally dried out the engine and found water in the intercooler lines. Ran fine until 2/1/10. Dealer had me pay for their time because "the only way this could happen is if I drove through a puddle or if it was in a flood". They are wrong. The parking lot is not valet (I kept my keys) and they have a snow removal service. Snow was not plowed into or on top of my car. No other water damage was seen in or on the vehicle anywhere else. Date of no start: 2/01/10 location: northeast of philadelphia mileage: 21,000 codes: none known significant weather before no start: cold, dry took to dealer (what was done): no ambient air temps: high 36 (f) low 21 (f) jetta started fine in the morning 6:30am. Left work at 6:00pm and did not start. The sequence: 1) crank but didn't turn over 2) got it to turn over and start about 1 min later, no message on mfd 3) kept foot on accelerator in neutral at about 1300 rpm for 30-60 sec. 4) ran fine on 30 min drive home this is an unsafe condition that could result in significant problems if it takes a long time to get a tow in the winter.

16 Engine Cooling System problem of the 2009 Volkswagen Jetta

Failure Date: 05/30/2009

I bought my brand new 2009 Jetta tdi on 5/28/2009 and 2 days later after I had only driven the car for 200 miles, the air conditioning stopped working when the car was sitting still. I opened the hood after I got to my destination to realize that the cooling fans were not working at all. They would not even come on to cool the engine. This occurred on a Saturday, and the vw dealer where I bought it was closing in an hour. Their master tech agreed to stay until I got there and he ran some tests on it, and told me he simulated a severe engine overheat and the fans still did not come on. He said the car could not be driven and it would have to stay at the dealer. He said the fan relay was faulty and would have to be replaced. Then Monday morning the service manager whom did not believe the master tech decided to drive my car with a non-functioning cooling system to see if he could replicate the problem. He called me to discuss the fact that the air conditioning worked while he was driving to which I said it will when you drive it, however, it does not work when your come to a stop because the fans do not turn on. He finally decided after a day of wasted tests to order the part. I finally got my car back today after they had it for 5 days of the first week I owned it. I am so glad I purchased the 100,000 mile warranty, because that sort of problem after 2 days of ownership does not say much for vw. Everything was covered under warranty, but I was still without my car for just shy of a week. Diagnosed part= cooling fan module failure.

17 Engine Cooling System problem of the 2000 Volkswagen Jetta

Failure Date: 04/20/2009

Since vehicle was purchased, there has been numerous problems and issues with the vehicle. The most troublesome and expensive is the cooling system. I have had 3 different repair shops look at it and "fix it" only to have the car do the same thing. The temperature gauge does not indicate that the car is overheating, however, it must be. I have been stranded multiple times (almost everyday in my commute to from work and school), after I sit in traffic over 20 minutes, out of nowhere the radiator cap blows off the cooling reservoir spilling the liquid all over the engine and causing the car to smoke. I have even burned had a second degree burn from having to pull over and opening the trunk so I can refill after it cools. Someone has yet to figure out what is wrong with the vehicle. The check engine light has been on for years, again only to have multiple people look at it, and not have the problem solved. I will crank the engine but the car will die out. But if I hit the speed control to set the speed it will stay on. The car will hesitate and I will start off slow then it will go at normal speed. Last but not least I have gotten pulled over 3 times in the last 3 weeks because the brake lights go out. I have replaced these brake lights all recently but they will burn out within days with out me knowing. It is horrible vehicle, I have spent a lot of money trying to get it repaired. Everytime it goes in the shop is for days I have to get a rental car everytime. Enough to say that the car rental people know me by name! my job and school are affected by this each and everytime. I suffer from anxiety every time I get in the car because I don't know what will happen next! it is stressful and ridiculous having to deal with this. Please help!.

18 Engine Cooling System problem of the 2002 Volkswagen Jetta

Failure Date: 03/20/2009

I have two problems, one with temperature coolant sign. Many Jetta's have this problem, it occurs every time I turn on the car, sign always comes on. This causes signals and computer programs in the car to be confused, and is always a dangerous light because I never know if there is something wrong with my car's coolant or radiator. I have replaced this part about two times through a mechanic shop with a vw part twice. Still is a failure, and I read most Jettas have this problem and it is ridiculous that vw can not fix this expensive part for its customers. Also I had a problem with my alternator one day ago. My vehicle was forced to stall on the middle of the highway causing me almost to get into an accident. For some reason my car lost all its power, battery was only one or two weeks old, and now my alternator died. My car has only 71,400 miles on it, it is not very old, it is a major concern to see an alternator die that early in the car, makes me wonder what other major problems I have in the future, let alone what I had in the past. Now I have to fix this car, and will take one week to fix and get the part ready, costing me almost $600 in repair. Not only did my car break down on the highway but the car smelt like it was burning, very dangerous!!this a vw defect, and should be addressed to all vw owners about their alternators, it doesn't feel safe if this car keeps breaking down, tired of this car. Other recalls about this vehicle make me want to question whether to drive it not, if it has a country wide brake problem in this car.

19 Engine Cooling System problem of the 1999 Volkswagen Jetta

Failure Date: 02/13/2009

Coolant system external leak was fixed, hoses replaced and connector that attaches to engine was replaced also. Leak comes back , replaced another hose. , then the worse starts, the heater core started leaking and the car started to smell like antifreeze. Got heater core replaced, but the inside of the car smells horrible,. Every time I drive my 1999 Jetta, I get this metallic taste in my mouth and throat. The stuff is definitely toxic, and the af container reads poisonous. Becomes a torture to drive my Jetta I hate the metallic taste in my mouth. The design off some of the heating system includes plastic components that may not take the heat well specially at the point of contact with the engine. Did some online research and found similar cases with internal antifreeze leaks on vw Jettas. This fumes can really ruin your driving experience not to mention the possible detriment on your health due to breathing in a contaminated atmosphere thanks for looking into this complaint.

21 Engine Cooling System problem of the 2000 Volkswagen Jetta

Failure Date: 07/04/2008

I own a 2000 Volkswagen Jetta, the car has had numerous problems, I realize the car is old and was bought as is it still should maintain to properly run. It has caused a safety hazard when the cars water pump failed while I was on the freeway doing 75mph, it started to stall I was in the far left lane, I pulled over threw heavy traffic, it was a 1000 dollar repair, I have researched the problem and found numerous complaints about a failed water pump, also, the car starts and revs at 2000 rpms or it has trouble starting, check engine light comes on frequently and cant find the problem, engine malfunctions are numerous, I feel I should have some compensation from the vw corporation and all the other owners of a vw of this year with the same issues.

22 Engine Cooling System problem of the 2006 Volkswagen Jetta

Failure Date: 06/15/2008

Vehicle air conditioning condensate drain tube is not secured from the factory. Tube will pop loose and fill vehicle carpet with stagnant air conditioning water. Dealer refuses to acknowledge obvious factory defect as no fastener was found to be in the tube fastener tab. Dealer refuses to repair problem.

23 Engine Cooling System problem of the 2006 Volkswagen Jetta

Failure Date: 06/13/2008

I complained to the vw dealer about my a/c in my Jetta gli. They told me their was nothing wrong twice. Now my ac doesn't work anymore. When I complained my car was still under warranty.

24 Engine Cooling System problem of the 2000 Volkswagen Jetta

Failure Date: 04/01/2008

The contact owns a 2000 Volkswagen Jetta. Since the vehicle was purchased in April of 2008, it stalls and shuts down without warning. The vehicle was taken to the dealer for a diagnosis. The failure code was located at the gas throttle position sensor. The VIN was unknown. The failure mileage was 107,000 and current mileage was 113,770.

25 Engine Cooling System problem of the 2005 Volkswagen Jetta

Failure Date: 03/21/2008

I have a 2005 vw 2. 5 Jetta. My first incident was at 32,000 miles when the back brakes went out. Following that, my brake lights became faulty. After replacing my brake lights, they went out again. I took it to the dealer who charged me $38 to change them again. They went out once again before the dealer decided to inform me there was a defect which was covered under warranty. The next problem was when I was driving on the freeway when my car lost power and the check engine light came on. I was towed to the dealer who told me my spark plugs were wet from the rain. They suggested the 40k mile maintenance at $500 to fix the problem. I agreed to do this only to have the light come on after I left the dealer. This happened about 4 more times until the dealer finally revealed they are aware of a problem with the coils. They were dying electronically one by one and they had to order 5 new updated coils from michigan for my specific VIN. 6 months later the check engine light came on again at 50 miles. Now I am being told the a/c fan motor has died. There is no sensor for this so the fan motor has to be replaced at $780. 00. I was also informed that the larger fan is working, but it is weak and might need replaced as well. The car jerks and runs very rough. My car also makes a loud noise when I start it. When I am sitting at a stop sign or red light the whole car shakes. This does not seem right for a car that has 56k miles currently.

26 Engine Cooling System problem of the 2005 Volkswagen Jetta

Failure Date: 03/21/2008

Small radiator cooling fan stopped.

27 Engine Cooling System problem of the 1999 Volkswagen Jetta

Failure Date: 03/01/2008

Leak in cooling system causing migration to water pump, heater core, and engine wiring harness. Having to replace all 3. Car stalls at random times in busy traffic, posing potential accident problem. Caused toxic fumes to come through heat vents in car.

28 Engine Cooling System problem of the 2004 Volkswagen Jetta

Failure Date: 06/06/2007

Clutch failed at 52k miles, was told it was not covered under warrant due to wear and tear, mechanic deemed it a faulty part, vw said it only covered manufacturer defects up to 50k miles, paid $1500 to replace clutch. Trunk pops open randomly and latch makes clicking noises. Air cooling sensor needs to be replaced, my car is reading a running temp of -54 when it should be 160. Car stalls if I turn it off after driving more than a few miles then doesn't turn over if the engine cuts off. Black smoke pours out of tailpipe and it burns double the gas it should. Luckily they extended the factory warranty on the sensor last week and it can be fixed for free at a vw dealership only.

29 Engine Cooling System problem of the 2003 Volkswagen Jetta

Failure Date: 07/29/2006

2003 Jetta GLS; twice when running the ac the car suddenly overheats, fuse blows. The engine temp gauge goes far into the red zone. I turned on the heater to draw heat away from engine, air was so hot it literally melted the plastic water bottle in the cup holder. (didn't help my comfort that the outside temp was near 100 degrees and I'm driving along with sunroof open, windows open, and heater turned on high!) I was concerned that my leg was burned as well because the air blowing from vent was so hot. I had to idle the car every few thousand feet to allow car to cool enough to limp to service station. First time (July 06, car w/I warranty @ 32k miles), vw told me that the fuse was blown; they were unable to replicate and indicated that if it happened again they would need to figure out why. Second time (Nov. 2007, car out of warranty @ 51k)), non-vw mechanic able to replicate and said that fuse blew because "cooling fans are drawing too many amps (up to 100 amps) when starting. When running they are still drawing 37 amps and should be less than 20 amps. " although this has happened only twice, and I have yet to repair (too expensive at $800+ and I'm unemployed), I live in great fear as warm weather approaches that I will be "burned" by this issue again. It's only a matter of time.

30 Engine Cooling System problem of the 2003 Volkswagen Jetta

Failure Date: 07/15/2006

I have a 2003 Volkswagen Jetta tdi GLS. I should note that this vehicle has been faithfully serviced by the dealer following the maintenance schedule listed in the user manual. The vehicle currently has 109,000 miles. While driving the vehicle a few days before the incident date listed on this complaint, the a/c ceased to function properly. There was no cool air coming out of the vents. Also, when the vehicle was shutdown, the radiator fans would continue to run upwards of 15 minutes. Neither event has occurred before. I brought my vehicle in to a vw dealership on the incident date to have its normal 110,000 mile service and to have the issues (noted above) diagnosed. I received a call from the dealership later in the day on the incident date stating that a failure in the coolant level sensor caused coolant fluid to be wicked into the vehicle's wiring harness leading to contamination / corrosion of the engine and body harness. The quote to repair was approximately $6,000. This problem is a latent defect in the design. The service department told me that the vehicle was un-drivable until the repairs are made. The service advisor also confirmed that because the problem was with the harness itself, any electrical component could be affected such as the airbags, abs, srs, etc. Also, from my own research I found some people who experienced this problem have also had smoke or fires inside the vehicle. Vw issued a technical service bulletin (id# c 97-01-01) for a similar issue on 1999. 5 - 2001 model year Jettas, but never for the 2003 and never a recall campaign on the defective design. Vw has refused to assist in the cost of repair to the vehicle as well.

31 Engine Cooling System problem of the 1999 Volkswagen Jetta

Failure Date: 06/14/2006

Coolant leaking from coolant reservoir bottle wiring connector contaminates the wiring harness.

32 Engine Cooling System problem of the 2001 Volkswagen Jetta

Failure Date: 05/10/2006

: the contact stated upon inspection, it was noticed the brake light switch was inoperable. The dealership replaced the brake light switch and determined there was a NHTSA recall, # 06v183000, regarding the exterior lighting brake light switch. The VIN was not included in the recall. The manufacturer was alerted. Updated 6/27/2006 - the switch was replaced by the original owner under recall on 4/26/05 with 44653 miles. The replacement switch failed one year later at 52675 miles. The coolant pump failed and caused the vehicle to overheat. The front woofer in the door failed internally causing the sound to be distorted.

33 Engine Cooling System problem of the 2000 Volkswagen Jetta

Failure Date: 02/15/2006

After coming up a steep hill in a heavy snowstorm, the engine of my 2000 GLS v6 Volkswagen Jetta caught fire and burned up. The car was in excellent condition and well serviced. I parked the car in the garage and there was no sign or smell of smoke. After the third trip out to the car to unload groceries, smoke began to come out from the hood. Fortunately, I was able to get the car out of the garage or my home would have burned to the ground. Despite the cold temperatures and snowstorm outside, flames soon began to drop below the car from the engine and flames 8 feet high engulfed the front half of the car before the fire department could put out the fire. Just before arriving home, by low gas light came on (it was expected), but no warning appeared about the temperature of the engine. I would have immediately pulled over had there been a high temperature warning. The coolant level was normal. Because of the unusual circumstances, I believe the cooling system is faulty.

34 Engine Cooling System problem of the 2004 Volkswagen Jetta

Failure Date: 12/16/2005

Car is loosing coolant with no external leakage. Many people are reporting egr cooler failures. Vw needs to have a recall and address this issue.

35 Engine Cooling System problem of the 2002 Volkswagen Jetta

Failure Date: 10/27/2005

I own vw Jetta 1. 8 turbo 2002, at 2005 had a coolant bottle leaking into connection, cluster, coolant found at connector. Since my car was under extended warranty by masterguard they just did a patch work overlaying horns to cluster and replacing the coolant bottle and cap leaving all major work which need to be done at this case to prevent following damage of entire wiring system causing complete failure of the car. So I would pay from my wallet $ 6000 or more when warranty expires. My car now started having all this problem due to that coolant migration left there. It's a manufacturer defect and needs to be repaired by manufacture. So,who is going to pay now for that? class action need to be taking against vw!!!.
