I was driving my 2014 Jetta se (14 months ago 13658 miles on the car) on November 25, 2015, when it completely stopped on highway 101 in California at 4 pm on the day before thanksgiving. I was at a complete stop when the engine turned off. I turned off my car and restarted it and the engine was shaking badly (from side to side) and the more I drove the car the more lights started turning on. I was stuck in major holiday traffic and almost got hit on numerous occasions and got honked at multiple times because I was unable to keep up in traffic due to the violent shaking of the vehicle. Going above 25 miles an hour caused the car to make a loud noise and shake even more vigorously, making it impossible and dangerous to drive. The first lights to turn on included the epc, oil light (engine low oil) and engine (emission control light). However, as I drove the car more, to pull over to safety because I was unable to pull over at the current place I broke down, the more lights started to turn on such as the tire pressure system. I had to be towed to the nearest dealer who said 3 of my 4 ignition coils were misfiring. I got the car back on December 1, 2015 and my car broke down again on December 4, 2015, with the same problem. It was brought back into a different dealer due to breaking down in a different area. The ignition coils have failed again, causing my engine to shut down and putting me in a vulnerable place. I am lucky that my engine failed on a city street the second time compared to a busy highway but this car is not safe and I am lucky to be alive, because the first break down on a major highway was not only scary but a life-threatening situation.

My 2009 vw Jetta tdi had the engine light come on. The dealer said it was an 048 code for exhaust flap failure. This is a key part of the emission control. They told me it would cost $655 to replace. Researching the internet, this is a growing problem with the Jetta. Pages and pages on the internet complained about the problem. Some dealers are replacing it under the federally mandated 80,000 emissions warranty. Others are not. It explicitly is covered in California and new york, where I purchased my car. I also discovered on the internet that this part is cleanable, which is much less cost than replacing. I understand this is under investigation by your organization. This early failure should be covered by the warranty but is not being implemented.

Letter to administrator from regarding a problem with his 2011 Volkswagen Jetta sel. The consumer stated 13 days after purchasing the vehicle, the check engine light illuminated. The consumer took the vehicle back to the dealer, but the problem was not resolved. The consumer went to another vw who has been handling the problem ever since. The consumer stated he has been to the dealer four times in order to resolve the ongoing problem. The consumer requested that Volkswagen write off the vehicle as a defective, unsafe vehicle; since the problem was in the fuel system (code po456) evap leak.

Purchased a used 03 vw tdi on 04/05, had the warranty transferred and registered to me at vw. Brief random incidents occurred where throttle would not respond for 1-3 seconds when starting from a stop sign. (this could be detrimental to your health) vw dealer could do nothing without a fault code. This continued for 2 years and 24000 miles. On 02/04/08, I shut the engine off, did an errand, came out and restarted the engine only to have it idle rough then die out, during this time there was no throttle response. I restarted engine 6-7 times, on the 8th time it ran normally. Next day same happened to wife. I loaded car onto a flatbed and delivered to vw dealer 60 miles away. They found the egr throttle valve stuck, removed it, cleaned out built-up carbon. This cost $370. 00 we do not know if these incidents are related.

After driving 800 highway miles from florida, with 400 miles left to go we stopped for the night. The next morning the car was bucking and refused to run. We added a fuel additive and manual shift in order to keep the car running and get it home. On Aug. 27th we changed the fuel filter and took the car for a test drive. The car stalled when going up a hill aprrox. 500 ft from house. It would not restart. The car was towed to the dealer on Aug. 28th and is still there on sept. 20th. So far they have replaced the fuel in the tank and the fuel filter, and the egr valve was replaced. The car is still running sluggish and bucking. They can't find out what is wrong with it. Next they want to take apart the intake manifold even though they are not sure that is the problem. The car is a 2005 and half Jetta diesel with 63,000 miles on it. The car is unsafe to drive and is the car I depend on to take my children back & forth to school (a 20 mile trip one way).

The cabin of the 2002 Volkswagen Jetta emits a waxy odor that I am concerned represents engine fumes. I have had the car inspected by several mechanics, and, while they could identify the odor, they could not identify the source. This odor caused me and my passengers to suffer burning eyes and nausea.

2002 Volkswagen Jetta customer states that the catalytic converter warranty claim was denied for the second time and this is an appeal letter* the consumer stated the first denial lacked an actual reason and the second denial stated the repair to his vehicle was not considered an emergency. The catalytic converter and oxygen sensor were replaced.
Like others, I have had the ignition coil replaced. This happened after the warranty expired, of course. I have also had electrical problems with the windows (regulator and motor) for all of them. Now, my check engine light is flashing and the car is sputtering. I know the secondary air intake valve needs replacing but it did not cause problems. Now I'm wondering if something new is wrong??? also, I was having problems with losing coolant and had to continuously replace antifreeze. After fixing what I thought was a small leak the entire system will not produce cool air! this car has been nothing but problems and vw should look into all of these complaints.

: the contact stated the vehicle looses power intermittently, at any speed. The vehicle was seen by the service dealer who determined an oxygen sensor may need to be replaced. The contact is concerned because the dealer was able to determine the cause of the problem without inspecting the vehicle. The dealer informed the contact that oxygen sensor failure was a common problem with the diesel engine. Although, the dealer determined a possible cause of the problem, the vehicle was not repaired.

The contact stated the check engine light illuminated. He took the vehicle to the dealer, who diagnosed a problem with the emission control and the mass air flow sensor. The mass air flow sensor was replaced. However, a month later the same problem recurred. The dealer replaced the mass air flow sensor again. Since the second replacement there have been no further problems. This repair was not covered by the warranty, and the contact paid out of pocket for the repairs. Updated 11/29/2005 -.
I bought the car may of 2004 since then have had to replace O2 sensors 2 times. And is in the shop right now its been there for a week. There telling me that it was from maryland that the problem occurred in. Yet when I drive the car it dies. How did the guy get it here from maryland with it braking down all the time. I feel as if their trying to take advantage of me because they don't want to fix it for me and I'm a women so they think I know nothing about cars. This is affecting my life and work.

2 times I had to replace a faulty 02 sensor 1st time engine temp sensor. Rear left light burned out 3-4 times within 80 000km. Said it's easier to replace then find the problem at dealership. Have done oil consumption tests 1 litre of oil per 3161km. Saying that this normal. This dealership have recommended flushing the engine. Changing the grade of oil. Do not drive in rush hour traffic. Most of the consumption occurs on the highway and not in traffic. Change the oil instead of 8000 km at 5000km??? this is what Volkswagen has recommended. The most interesting part was watching the mechanic when it consumed the most amount between oil consumption test. He started looking for leaks again & added oil. Rattling in driver side door and window fell into door passenger side. Fixed window and rattling still seems to be noticable.
September 2002 - leased 2002 vw Jetta 1. 8t. July 2003 - check engine light came on, ignition coils had to be replaced per recall. November 2003 - plumes of black smoke came out of tailpipe - they determined the oxygen sensor needed replacing. November 2003 - (a day later) smoke still coming out of tailpipe, they determined there was oil in the turbo, they had to remove and install new turbo charger and there was an oil leak, they had to remove and install oil line. November 2003- car making whoosing noise, had to rescure loose intake hose. May 2004 - replace breaklight switch per recall. July 2004 - drivers side window fell - had to have both windows and clamps replaced per recall. (if this had happened after hours, my car could have easily been vandilized, fortunately it was during the day and I was near the dealer so they were able to get them wedged shut before they could get the car in to be fixed. ) July 2004 (a day later) - battery died, got jumped and was towed to shop, it was determined I needed a new battery. No problems for almost a year, thought I was homefree. . . May 2005 - clacking noise in engine, sludge on dipstick and in oil fill cap. No oil light or check engine light ever came on. Had to also have hazard switch replaced per recall. I am currently waiting to see if they will cover the repairs under my warranty. My car needs to have the oil pan removed to see if there is any further damage. I was never told to you use synethic oil in my car and that apparently is the cause of the sludge problem. From looking online, it seems many more people than just myself have had this problem. Vw needs to recall this.
My car has 58,000 miles on it and like many others on this site it has suffered problem after problem with each one getting more serious. I have replaced a mass air flow sensor, glove box, turbo parts, and some plastic clips on the arm rest. But, when the air conditioner, fuel gauge started acting up, and the fact that this car has stalled on us three or more times recently (while out driving),then safety becomes an issue. The dealership could not fix the problem with the air conditioner coming and going or the stalling problem, as for the fuel gauge, we just fill up for every 280 miles put on the tripmeter.
My check engine light has been on for several months. I have has my oxygen sensors replaced several times, but I am not sure how many. I lost track after 6 times. The dealer (faulkner Volkswagen), has told me everytime that the check engine light is caused by the oxygen sensors. I have been told by other mechanics that this fault in the sensors can cause a fire in the engine at anytime. When my check engine light comes on, I loose power in my car and sometimes it stalls even when I am driving it. With the vehicle stalling while driving, this is a potential hazard to other drivers on the road as well as myself. I have been reading many complaints about the same problem that I am having with my 2001 Jetta. I have not had any accidents or resulted in any injuries due to this yet, however, I feel that this is a matter that should be looked into.
The checking engine light illuminated and the engine began to hesitate. The mechanic found service code stored for fuel trim. The mechanic replaced a defective mass air flow sensor. The signal light bulb was replaced, because it blinked very fast.

I own a vw Jetta 2001 vr6. I have had to replace my rear brake pads at only 20,000 miles to me a very premature wear problem. The dealer refused to repair them at no cost to me due to the premature wear of the brake pads. The repairs to the brake pads cost me $200. 00. The check engine light has come on on the same vw Jetta. To find out I know have to pay $292. 20 to have the maf sensor replaced on a car that has only 22,500 miles. I am trying to seek reimbursement from vw of America for these expenses. In addition this year I also had to pay $300. 00 to have the passenger door latch repaired as the spring broke that allowed me to open the door with the door handle. Regardless, my car is kept in pristine condition, and in no way should I be incurring these type of repairs on a vehicle that has only 20k miles on the odometer. Please help me.
Failure of drivers side power window - first time, however I expected it to happen since I found 53 complaints on this web site alone. This isn't the first time to encounter major repairs on this car. Just 4 weeks ago paid 1,100 dollars to replace oil pump and mass airflow meter. Why isn't there a recall yet?.
Problems regarding 2004 Volkswagen Jetta. The first few days of ownership, the consumer experienced the vehicle swerving to the left. Prior to the appointment for the swerving, the vehicle began to make a low whining sound, lunging backwards when in reverse and forward when in the forward position which would occur when the consumer's foot was on the brake pedal, shifting into gear and while releasing the brakes. The consumer was told that the whining was due to a bad fuel pump. They could not duplicate the lunging. The whining and the lunging problem returned. The consumer was then told that the transmission needed to be replaced. The consumer had a third fuel pump was replaced. The consumer was told there was a change in the emission control system with other Jettas and the beetle, when the consumer was told what to do when the engine was first started the problem was somewhat alleviated.
Check engine light repeatedly comes on due to malfunction of O2, mass air flow sensors.
Bought the used 2000 Jetta in may 2004. A month later in the dealer because check engine light went on. They changed oxygen sensor. Car started stalling/hesitating again and several weeks later in the dealer again. They changed the mass air flow sensor. Continued to hesitate/stall and went into service again and they found nothing wrong. No codes are coming up showing there is something wrong. This car is going again on Monday November 22, 2004 into dealer for the same problem. The problem has never been corrected and I can't believe I have such problems with this car that cannot be corrected. It only has 43,000 miles on the car and this is probably the reason it was traded in and has low miles.
O2 sensor & mass air flow sensors were replaced as part of a compaign after they went bad. Less than 2 years later, O2 sensor has gone bad again. Vw refuses to replace saying it's out of warranty. Complained that sensors were replaced at the very start of the compaign long before letters were ever sent out and that I could have received the old sensor. Vw was unable to provide any proof that the replacement sensors were the updated sensors and they refused to cover the additional repair. New sensor lasted less than 2 years/40000miles.
Who would have thought that a 4 year old vehicle could fail emisions inspection?stohlman, the Volkswagen dealership stated that the repair of the oxygen sensor was covered by warranty, but they still charged me for labor. I want to be reimbursed for the labor charge.
The engine check light came on and stayed on. The consumer took the vehicle for a smog check point test. The engine check light stayed on. The vehicle passed the emission test, but the examiner could not send the final approval to the motor vehicle department (dmv) until the defect was repaired. The light had gone off, but came back on 6 months later. (crankcase dilution/malfunction cause for p1582 and the motor runs outside idle adaption due to high blow by/malfunction in throttle valve control module -j338).

The consumer has had on going problems with the mass air flow sensor continually failing. The sensor has been replaced three times. Each time the sensor failed the vehicle lost power. The consumer received a letter from vw of America which extended the warranty of the sensor to 7 years or 70000 miles on Jetta's from 1999 to 2001. The consumer feels this is an improper solution to the problem. The front seat frames continued to break. Vw have replaced them on the consumers vehicle 5-6 times under warranty.
My three year old Jetta had to be towed off of a major highway due to oxygen sensor failure. I already had one oxygen sensor replaced one year after purchasing this car. This has been a problem ever sinse I owned the car. This a major safety concern sinse the car is stalling out while traveing at high speeds. I feel that there needs to be a major investigation into why these vehicles are performing so poorly when they are still new. Everyone I know that owns a Jetta reports the same type of stalling and numeous other expensive problems. This is unacceptable for a $20000 product. On several occasions the dealer has not repaired the vehicle stating that there are no problems. The dealer has informed me that it is going to cost me almost $1000 to fix the problem and it is not covered under the vehicles warranty.
Check engine light O2 sensor, mass air flow sensor.
The contact owns a 2001 Volkswagen Jetta. The contact brought the vehicle to the dealer yesterday to have the mass air flow meter serviced. The contact stated that this failure has been ongoing for approximately three years and has become costly. The current and failure mileage were 115,781.
Purchased new Jetta 1. 8t from dealer in 8/00. Have taken it back several times due to check engine light and back firing w/slight hesitation on acceleration. They replaced air filter 8/01, 10/3/01 replaced defective sensor & valve, 2/02 couldn't find reason for continued backfiring, had oil change and reset light. Next couple of times the light came on they said to wait a couple of days --it did go off. 5/03 they performed diag test and reset light. Said if came on again I'd need catalytic converter. 8/13 in shop again for check engine light this time diag test said they should replace the mass air flow sensor & wiring. Told me not under warranty even though the check engine light has been a consistent ongoing problem. Will be calling vw customer care.
Mass air flow sensor failed at least 6 times in the past 60,000 miles, causing the vehicle to stall. Consumer discussed this with Volkswagen, and asked manufacturer for an extended warranty. However, Volkswagen was not listening. The driver's side seat up/down lever spring broke. The micro switch failed and as a result the trunk light and gas light on the dash were inoperative. The automatic door locks failed.
I thought my first new car purchase (a 2000 Jetta vr6 GLS) was a lemon. I, like many others, have experienced several problems. Problems such as: - rear cup holders broken - middle/rear seatbelt locked, cannot be used - 02 sensors both replaced since mil light kept illuminating - mas sensor replaced (and later recalled) - both front windows have fallen to the "black hole" (and later recalled; including a recall to the recall b/c they went from metal clips to plastic or vice versa) - paint peeling from inside door handles - alarm system faulty on passenger side door (dealer told me that unless the car beeps at me, the alarm is not secured. So, I must lock the door. Stand by for 15 seconds, lock the door again and this time when the car beeps, the passenger door is secured. And, furthermore, (this is good - keep reading) I was told that if I drive too close to a jea bus, their bus computer systems are run on the same channel as my Jetta's computer system and sometimes being too close to a jea bus will cause my cars computer system to scramble). Computer system can be reset, and did you know that while resetting, vw can make your car beep in different patterns? that's probably a "feature"! - center console/armrest latch broken - large spring sits underneath my passenger side front seat - seat belt no longer click, indicating locked in position (dealer told me it still works. So, now I have to push it down and then tug on it, hoping that it really is locked -- if not, I may fly out that recalled window. ) - child restrain seat locks recalled - trunk lock wouldn't stay latched - front fender separating from body of car - grinds going into second gear (manual transmission) - when car is put into 1st gear, it waits a few second before it gets enough power to fully accelerate - brake dust covers alloy wheel, in just hours of cleaning drivers wanted. . . But they're all in the dealer waiting room!.
The mass air flow sensor failed four times and was replaced. A recall letter was received, and consumer was not satisfied. Fuel mixture in the vehicle was still defective. Also, frame on the seats broke on seven occasions and repaired by the manufacturer.
My wife and I bought a 2000 Jetta tdi with a defective mass air sensor, I have been told that engine oil vapor leaks down the air intake and creates a oil film over sensor which renders it inop. With it not working the car accelerates very slowly and has very little power. My mechanic said a replacement is $274. 00 for this item and there is no guarantee it wont happen again after buying the new part. I find this problem unacceptable and figure the engineer that designed this part must have got a huge bonus for this recurring problem.
The electrical system sensor fail due to defect. Once the warrenty is out at 28,000 miles, car begin to fall apart. I have to replace the canister, new brake system, the O2 sensors and other minor fixes. Please check if vw know about the problem and still release the new 2000 Jetta model with all the problem.
