37 Emission Control problem of the 2002 Volkswagen Jetta

Failure Date: 09/30/2002

On September 30th, I took my Jetta in to valenti Volkswagen to have a new and updated ecu installed. The unit was in stock, I received a call from rick in parts and made an appointment to come in that day to have it put it. When I arrived, I was told by the technician the ecu in my car had to be sent to Volkswagen to be reprogrammed and that I had to get a rental car while the ecu was out. I got a call from service on October 12th letting me know my car was ready to be picked up. When I arrived, I was told my ecu was still at Volkswagen being reprogrammed. The service manager was able to get a new and updated ecu in the mean time. I donã‚t know why they just didnã‚t install the ecu they had in stock on September 30th. I had to pay a total of 119. 88 to enterprise for the rental vehicle. Iã‚ve called in to Volkswagen care numerous times regarding this complaint and nothing was resolved. I told the reps I spoke to I wanted an explanation as to why my car was not repaired on the 30th when I brought it in. It took almost two weeks to fix it and I had to pay for the rental car, which was unnecessary. A copy of this has been sent to j. D. Power and associates for their review. Sincerely, robert taylor.

38 Emission Control problem of the 2001 Volkswagen Jetta

Failure Date: 08/02/2002

The vehicle sputters when you first start out and after sitting for a while and is started up again. I have taken it to the dealership where I purchased it from on 3 separate occasions. On the last trip to the dealership, they took it the the manufacturer for diagnosis. The manufacturer advised it was my mass air flow sensor. Once that was replaced my vehicle still experienced problems. On today 8/30/02 I took my vehicle to the manufacturer directly and was advised that the wiring that went to the maf sensor needs to be changed. Almost $600. 00 later, spark plugs, fuel fiter, air filter , O2 sensors, mass air flow sensor and wires. . . . . . . . . . . The problem is not as bad, but still exists. The dealer where the vehicle was purchased is upset that the manufacter did the last repairs and guaranteed the vehicle was fixed. . . . . . . . . After letting it sit for 3 hours today, starting the vehicle, backing out of my driveway. . . . And turning the wheel. . . . . . . . . The sputter was back. I do want to go back to the manufacturer to get the vehicle repaired. But I do not want to pay $75 an hour labor for them to check the same problem over and over again, and pretty much just replace various parts. Has anyone else experienced this problem or one similar. What can I do to get my car repaired and not have to pay for the check out charge for the same problem?.

39 Emission Control problem of the 1999 Volkswagen Jetta

Failure Date: 06/13/2002

Rear brakes were sqeualing for months. Took into dealership 5 times and they could not duplicate noise. Finally rear brakes went all together and had them replaced at another dealership. Dealer said they should not have gone after just over 30,000 miles so Volkswagen covered half of costs. One week later picked up car as I was driving home malfunction indication light came on. Took into dealership again. All three oxygen sensors had blown. Day after picking up from dealership passenger window fell into door and is currently back in being fixed. I know these are all common problems with 1999 Jetta. Vw was somewhat helpful on cost but will do nothing now because they "have already been too kind". This car is dangerous and I do not feel comfortable driving it anymore. Now I have to cover the cost of an early lease termination for fear of injury or more $ for damage repairs.

40 Emission Control problem of the 1999 Volkswagen Jetta

Failure Date: 06/12/2002

I have a 1999 Jetta. The oxygen sensor was replaced and based on the Volkswagen customer team, my car (based on the VIN #) does not fall in the ones that they recalled with the safety alerts issued by the epa and the Volkswagen company. I believed that they most re-considered the way that they selected the affected vehicles. Since I know people who has been dealing with the same oxygen sensor problem, and their vehicle identification number does not fall in the ones that the company has identified for the recalled.

41 Emission Control problem of the 2001 Volkswagen Jetta

Failure Date: 06/07/2002

The maf sensor was replaced on my vehicle about 2 years ago. I replaced part myself after the dealer told me that this part was bad. I did not receive a service report for this troubleshooting. I purchased and replaced the part myself. 1. 5 years later I received a warrenty extension letter from vw, stating reimbursment with receipt of charges, including VIN # and mileage. At the time I purchased the part, from a vw dealer, this info was not required to be on a part order. I supmitted this info in Dec 2003. In June 2004, I received a reject for claim because the receipt did not have this info on it. I believe that vw has done the warrenty extension to prevent an offical recall, but it has not been done in good faith. They set a requirement that their own dealers did not start on VIN and mileage on part orders, only on service orders, at the time. They have designed the system to fail. Under a warranty extension they do not have to report the number of rejected claims to you and it can appear that they are addressing the issue. I can understand this requirement for claims dated after the letter, but not 1. 5. Years before.

45 Emission Control problem of the 1999 Volkswagen Jetta

Failure Date: 10/05/2001

This is the fourth failure of the oxygen sensor since I purchased the car (new) in 1999. The dealer had worked with vw on the last failure to try to find a solution for the problem; however, less than six months later the sensor has failed again. Clearly, there is a problem with the model since the dealer has advised that many others have experienced similar failure. The last time it failed, there was about a one month delay in having the sensor replaced because they were on back order.

46 Emission Control problem of the 1999 Volkswagen Jetta

Failure Date: 08/27/2001

March 16, 2000 malfunction indicator light on- needed a new oxygen sensor. Had to wait until October of 2000 (7 months) to get sensor replaced after numerous calls to Volkswagen customer service. Then in February of 2001 (4 months later) the malfunction indicator light is back on. Had diagnosed through a local mechanic it was oxygen sensor again and have same symptoms as before. Also major consumption of fuel after the indicator light came on. Several problems have occured in the car and Volkswagen will not even consider covering to get fixed. I have an extended warranty which also will not help cost of fixing the numerous problems with this new vehicle. Have tried to speak with several managers through Volkswagen and no one seems to want to help. The problems occuring will cause safety issues if they are not fixed soon. I am a single female, age 24, am living on my own and am very concerned about my transportation and the fact that no one from Volkswagen or the extended warranty (easy care) want to assist the problems. I would greatly appreciate your help with this matter. Thank you for your time.

52 Emission Control problem of the 1999 Volkswagen Jetta

Failure Date: 02/16/2001

Both the mass air flow sensor and the oxygen sensor have failed in my car after the initial warantee expired. Symptoms of each failure was a hesitation when accelerating similiar to stalling the engine, being possibly hazardous when turning into traffic. Talking to the dealership, they stated that it was a "common problem" for both items. If this is a common problem this leads me to believe that these two components are defect in design. I've talked to other Volkswagen owners, service representatives and some independent repair shops and they have said that they have had/seen the same problems repeatedly. Repairs to this vehicle have become expensive at $750+ for each occurance. If you could provide any information I might be able to use I would be grateful.

56 Emission Control problem of the 1996 Volkswagen Jetta

Failure Date: 11/17/2000

It seems that on a very rainy day or a damp day the car stalls or doesn't start at all. I get a "check engine" light that comes on as well. I brought the car in to koppell vw in nyc and they always blame the heated O2 sensor for the "check engine" light. They also have changed the ignition wires, rotor and rotor cap for the stall. It has been an on and off problem since then. The O2 sensor has been changed 4 times and the ignition wires, rotor and cap have been changed 6 times. I would like to have this problem solved. The car is still protected under the original manufacturer's warranty but it seems they (koppell vw in nyc or vw themselves) don't want to honor the warranty. Thank you.

59 Emission Control problem of the 2000 Volkswagen Jetta

Failure Date: 04/01/2000

Dealers openly acknowlege problems with their map sensors on gas and diesel engines, but Volkswagen of America internally refuses to recall this item. The same complaints are made about the very common relay 109 fuse failures, which Volkswagenw is likewise putting off. Please force them to recall these two items that have cost me plenty of out of pocket money, even though my car is under warranty. This is a rip-off of all consumers by vw of America and they need to be held accountable for their ignorance of these obvious problems!.
