2 Engine Exhaust System problem of the 2010 Volkswagen Jetta

Failure Date: 01/07/2016

Dealership performed 90k mile checkup. Also asked them to determine if cel p0472 was covered by warranty. They confirmed code, and said not covered under any warranty. The also advised the car is showing intermittent code of p0638 for throttle actuator control (bank 1). Written on the estimate by vw dealership is "technician noted that while driving vehicle into the shop, vehicle had no throttle control and would not increase in engine speed. Technician recommends replacing the throttle body and exhaust pressure sender. Technician recommends customer not to drive vehicle --vehicle will at some point stop driving (moving) - it could stop moving at any point, including crossing a intersection". I have not had any issues whatever with my throttle, but due to their documentation, it appears there is a safety issue here deserving of a mandatory safety recall.

3 Engine Exhaust System problem of the 2014 Volkswagen Jetta

Failure Date: 12/02/2015

I purchased a 2014 vw Jetta, brand new from vw boise in idaho. On 3 occasions, I reported an issue with the car shaking/losing acceleration power while driving (a serious safety issue). In October 2015, I had it in for service and explained the situation to them again, they assured me that a software update would fix it. On 12/02/2015, I was driving to pick up my daughter after work and a car in front of me was turning. I braked and the car started to shake and stutter. I let off of the brake and lightly pressed the gas to accelerate and the car started shaking violently. I immediately turned into the parking lot and my car blew a cloud of exhaust and died. I had to wait over 25 minutes before I was able to speak with a rep from vw roadside and then I had to wait an additional hour before the tow truck would be able to tow my car. I also was not given a loaner because they stated that they had none available. I had to call vw for an update as they had not called me and they said it might be because of bad gas (which I know is not the issue as it has been doing this for over a year). They said they would call me before close of business on 12/03 with another update. I did not get a call back and I filed a complaint with the vw consumer's department but they were not helpful and said they'll have to refer it to a regional manager. I am still stuck without my car, without any explanation, and without a loaner vehicle.

5 Engine Exhaust System problem of the 2014 Volkswagen Jetta

Failure Date: 10/01/2014

Diesel exhaust smell enters cabin through interior climate control vents. Smell is originating from rear of engine, smell is pure un treated diesel exhaust. Dealer has replaced several components but to no avail. Unable to find any sign of leak with smoke or pressure testing. Smell enters cabin when vehicle is stationary, worse when cold or when engine is in the midst of a diesel particulate filter regeneration. Vwoa says normal and operates like other vehicles. Refusing to send lead tech out to investigate. I currently own two of the same model of engine as in this car and other car has never smelled like diesel exhaust in 30,000+ miles. There is a small leak in the exhaust system that is obviously hard to identify. Vwoa says it is ok for me to breathe diesel fumes.

6 Engine Exhaust System problem of the 2011 Volkswagen Jetta

Failure Date: 04/15/2014

Purchased this car new in 2011. Vw fixed the fuel exhaust ports. Engine light came on again and dealer stated that the particulate filter and catalytic converter both needed to be replaced. Also warned that the fuel pump had serious issues. I had one year left to pay this car off, it had 90k miles on it and I had to turn it in. How can they get away with selling a brand new car for $28k to have it crap out with no repercussions like this?.

7 Engine Exhaust System problem of the 2013 Volkswagen Jetta

Failure Date: 04/09/2013

8 Engine Exhaust System problem of the 2010 Volkswagen Jetta

Failure Date: 04/05/2013

Last year, engine light came on even though the car was driving fine. I took it to dealer and said problem was due to defect in exhaust flap. He asked me to pay $770. 00. Luckily, there was recall on the same a month later. Delear fixed it, but engine light still is on. He told me that one of oxygen sensor is faulty now caused by exhaust flap problem and said it is not covered by recall and asked to pay $550. 00. Vw refused to correct the problem. Now, I can't even inspect the car. Present problem is caused by another recalled defective problem.

9 Engine Exhaust System problem of the 2009 Volkswagen Jetta

Failure Date: 12/25/2012

My vw Jetta had sat for a few days in a indoor parking space in the midwest during winter December to be exact. When I started the car, it started weak, then gave an error on the display of "engine fault workshop. ". The cat continued to drive, but lacked power and seemed to surge. After I returned home, I disconnected the lower intercooler hose to find a large ice formation and water restricting the outlet of the intercooler. This problem can cause major engine damage and is caused. By the exhaust gases and water vapor freezing in the intercooler. Every vw with this style intercooler setup has potential for this problem. It should be recalled do to its severity. Also, there is a TSB already written for the "fix". But vw has not informed anyone, nor will take care of the problem for anyone beyond the 36000 mile warranty. Even though this is a design flaw.

10 Engine Exhaust System problem of the 2009 Volkswagen Jetta

Failure Date: 12/19/2012

The exhaust flap is sticking in the open position, thus causing warning light on dash to come on.

11 Engine Exhaust System problem of the 2009 Volkswagen Jetta

Failure Date: 09/01/2012

Tl-the contact owns a 2009 Volkswagen Jetta. The contact stated that the engine light illuminated. The vehicle was taken to the dealer. The dealer performed a diagnostic which located the failure at the exhaust control module. The dealer replaced the exhaust module under the warranty; however the failure was not corrected. The exhaust system control module failed again. A second diagnostic was performed by a local mechanic which located the failure at the exhaust sensor caused the exhaust emission gate not open and closed and engine light to illuminate. The vehicle was repaired. The exhaust flap door was lubricated. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was 60,000 and the current mileage was 110,000. Li.

12 Engine Exhaust System problem of the 2010 Volkswagen Jetta

Failure Date: 08/10/2012

2009-2013 model year Volkswagen tdi vehicles sold in the united states contain an exhaust restrictor valve that controls the regenerative feature of the diesel particulate filter (dpf). This flap is experiencing abnormal failure rate between 25000 and 70000 miles. Volkswagen is denying claims to replace these exhaust restrictor valves when they fail, and is asking customers to pay for replacement. Long-term malfunction of this valve results in non-compliance. The valve design has been updated several times, indicating that a defect was present in the original design. . Read more...

13 Engine Exhaust System problem of the 2006 Volkswagen Jetta

Failure Date: 06/29/2012

Engine loss of power, black smoke from exhaust and pinging noise from engine vehicle stalled a few time in traffic almost causing an accident with other vehicles driving vehicle to work, started making noise and decided to drive to vw dealership. Dearlership first diagnosed the problem as a bad clutch. Under my recommendation camshaft was inspected and found to be defective as well as the lifters that contact the camshaft. Dealer says this is not a vw problem and was surprised to see a problem with the camshaft. If you look on the internet, many tdi vw owners are experiencing the same problem. This problem is not being recongized by vw and is costing owners a lot of money in repairs as well as creating unsafe driving conditions for owners of this vehicle.

14 Engine Exhaust System problem of the 2011 Volkswagen Jetta

Failure Date: 08/08/2011

Our 2011 Volkswagen Jetta tdi developed an engine oil leak. When we took it to the dealer the service manager refused to let us drive it due to the possibility of an engine fire. Per the service manger the oil leak was causing an atomization of the engine oil that could have reached heated parts of the egine or exhaust and caused an oil fire.

15 Engine Exhaust System problem of the 2009 Volkswagen Jetta

Failure Date: 05/22/2011

Random engine failure while car is in gear, engine light comes on and vw error code says exhaust flap malfunction.

16 Engine Exhaust System problem of the 2006 Volkswagen Jetta

Failure Date: 03/16/2011

Very strong exhaust/foul smell inside vw Jetta car upon rapid acceleration this smell occurs very often (several times a day) when the car accelerates rapidly (for example, when passing another car etc. ) we've being trying to resolve this issue for a long time: changed filter, vw said it was the catalytic converter and changed it, but the smell came back. This strong smell is causing my kids to cough and is unbearable. Vw is now refusing to do anything further and every time I ask the local dealer to diagnose it, they charge me a large fee and do not solve this issue.

17 Engine Exhaust System problem of the 2010 Volkswagen Jetta

Failure Date: 11/18/2010

1. Driving normally on highway when it came on and the car lost power suddenly and could not accelerate any further. Also car stalled several times on its own while idling at a traffic light (its an automatic transmission this should not be happening). 2. This is the second time this same problem has happened in first 20k miles of this vehicle its an 2010 vw tdi. First time it was at 9800 mile mark same light and problem came on they replaced a egr valve and now again at 19800miles. 3. They have replaced a part at 9800 miles and now replacing it again at 19800miles. It seems to be a repeat problem with this vehicle and very dangerous to have it slow down like that while driving and also stall out while in traffic.

18 Engine Exhaust System problem of the 2005 Volkswagen Jetta

Failure Date: 09/28/2010

I have a 2005 volkswagon Jetta my husband was driving the car and the battery blew up under the hood. Took the car in and was told it jumped timming tools and parts were unavalable and the engine had to be replaced this took three months and now the transmission will go into nutural while driving the volkswagon maintance department stated there was a recall on the transmission and is 8 miles over waranty and they will no fix the car.

19 Engine Exhaust System problem of the 2000 Volkswagen Jetta

Failure Date: 03/10/2010

Car will not start after being driven far enough to warm-up the engine. Must wait several minutes--up to an hour--before it will start again. The process of trying a restart results in much unburned fuel vapor in the exhaust stream. The interior lighting does not turn on or off with the opening of a door. Horn does not sound when locking the car, auto-drivers seat positioning does not work. On the highway, the car performs quite well--good engine power, steering, etc. However, the non-starting after being driven a distance could result in being stranded and placed in danger.

20 Engine Exhaust System problem of the 2002 Volkswagen Jetta

Failure Date: 01/22/2010

I recently purchased a 2002 vw Jetta and just found out that the catalytic converter needs replacement. I was very surprised when my mechanic informed me he has seen many 2002 Jettas with this problem. He said it was related to a problem with a bad coil that was part of a recall and caused the catalytic converters to fail abnormally fast. I am very disappointed that it appears vw knows about this issue and is ignoring the issue. The repair costs more than $1000 and I am unable to pass state inspection without getting it done.

21 Engine Exhaust System problem of the 2001 Volkswagen Jetta

Failure Date: 10/01/2009

Our 2001 vw Jetta GLS sputters intermittently and looses acceleration power at in opportune times. According to the dealer the problem is with the ignition coil, and that vw is aware of the problem and are recalling certain models. Ours has not had the recall as of 11/1/09. When this problem occurs, the check engine light blinks. I have found that pulling over, shutting the engine off and removing the key for 30 seconds and then re-starting solves the problem. When the dealer pulled the check engine codes, there were 2. One for the misfire and a "catalyst efficiency below threshold. The dealer said the latter is due to the misfire and in time the misfires will ruin the catalyst. Unfortunately at over 75000 miles and 8. 5 years, no warranties apply. This is a safety issue that could easily cause a collision and when parts become available, we will have the ignition coil replaced. Vw is clearly aware of the problems and should accelerate their recall campaign on this issue. Also, they should replace the catalysts that have had their useful life lowered by this problem.

22 Engine Exhaust System problem of the 2004 Volkswagen Jetta

Failure Date: 09/17/2009

1. Improper installation of the Volkswagen m6 recall. Or defective part on a Volkswagen tdi 2004, or faulty design. 2. The lower egr cooler pipe #038131521cc. This pipe cracks causing improper emissions and exhaust gases into the engine compartment next to the cabin air filter intake. Poison gases in the vehicle interior. 3. Replaced 3 cracked parts in 1 year. Volkswagen claims there is no problem and will not look into the matter.

23 Engine Exhaust System problem of the 2006 Volkswagen Jetta

Failure Date: 07/01/2009

I have a 2006 Jetta tdi, failure occurred on interstate I - 65 on 7/1/09 I heard a pop as if something fail out from under the car , all the oil dropped out of the vehicle all over the interstate for approximately 1 to 2 miles. Nothing has been done to correct the failure.

24 Engine Exhaust System problem of the 2009 Volkswagen Jetta

Failure Date: 06/02/2009

This complaint is for a 2009 v. W. Tdi (diesel engine). When I press the accelerator pedal when the engine is not yet warmed up, and shortly after the vehicle is started a hesitation occurs. This is very dangerous when it happens in traffic. This was reported to platinum Volkswagen on 1/6/09 during a vehicle courtesy check. The car dealer could not find the problem; however, the problem continues. This hesitation happens several times per week.

25 Engine Exhaust System problem of the 2003 Volkswagen Jetta

Failure Date: 10/30/2008

I have had 27 things break or fail on my 03vw Jetta 1. 8t. I bought the car used in 01/06 with 32,000 miles. After buying the car the first five mins the window shattered. First two months 2 tires blew out, front rim cracked, back tires out of alignment. Dealer paid to fix rim broke 2 weeks later the dealer paid fo used set of similar rims. Every light inside and out went out by 05/06 driver seat wont raise up cargo net in trunk falls apart dealer wont cover. Gas and trunk release buttons fell down inside of door. Radio stopped working front door speakers are shorting out. Driver window switch goes up when you push down and down when you push down have to fiddle with it for it to go up. Exhaust hanger broke causing chatter. Swaybar bushing fell out causing grinding and shaking when ever moving. Not cover by warranty all these happened by 05/07. Now its 10/08 and I have 84,000 miles. Current problems are rear spoiler brake light hangs down(dealer just glued it in place lasted about 4 months) cam and crank seals leaking oil cause odor inside of cabin. If I drive for more then an hour I get sick and light-headed. Seat, cargo net in trunk, is still broken. Radio still isn't fixed so I just went and bought an after market. Speakers still shortening out only when its cold out. Keyless entry only works within 4ft of the car. In the winter the car only gets 18mpg on the highway and about 14 in the city and the car is parked in a heated underground garage.

26 Engine Exhaust System problem of the 2006 Volkswagen Jetta

Failure Date: 10/10/2008

The check engine light came on, but only after causing serious damage to the engine, which was not covered under warranty on a two year old car. I pulled over immediately and had the car towed to the dealer. The exhaust converter had to be replaced. It failed the day after I picked it up. I took it back, they replaced it and it failed again. I am now on my fourth one. Vw says they know it's a problem, but still made me pay to have it replaced.

27 Engine Exhaust System problem of the 2004 Volkswagen Jetta

Failure Date: 10/01/2008

Vwoa had a recall campaign for the egr cooler system on 2004 and 2005 vw tdi's. Subsequent to the recall campaign, the lower egr flex pipe is known to crack on numerous vehicles in which the recall campaign was performed. When the egr pipe cracks, diesel exhaust is sucked into the cabin when the heater fan is operated causing discomfort and light headed for the driver and occupants. Vwoa has refused to address the problem and offers no solution to the vehicle owner or a fix. Not only is it an expensive repair, but it can also be causing medical problems for the driver and occupants. My egr pipe was cracked for 2-4 months before I realized what was happening. It may have been cracked longer with out my knowledge.

28 Engine Exhaust System problem of the 2006 Volkswagen Jetta

Failure Date: 09/01/2007

The vehicle exhaust gas recirculation cooler leaks exhaust after 50,000 miles, exposing the vehicle occupants to exhaust gases. Although the egr system is purely for emissions control, the dealer refused to fix the part under the covered emissions warranty. This problem can cause the death of the occupants of the vehicle.

29 Engine Exhaust System problem of the 2006 Volkswagen Jetta

Failure Date: 07/24/2006

In the last few weeks my husband and I have noticed a chemical smell similar to wet paint occasionally emitting from the a/c vents. In the last two days, it has become constant and I have refrained from using the a/c for fear that it is something harmful. We have looked the car over, ran the a/c and blower while out of the car and checked everything we can think of with no solution. The dealership suggested we spray lysol in the air intake and see if that helps, but I do not want to mask the odor especially if it something with which we should be concerned.

30 Engine Exhaust System problem of the 2005 Volkswagen Jetta

Failure Date: 04/17/2006

When driving on the interstate at 65 mph my car suddenly lost all its power and was I could not go over 25 mph. We were very lucky to not get hit from behind. When this happened the traction control light, engine/exhaust light, esr light, esp light all came on. It also stalls out when sitting at an intersection. Vw unable to fix as of yet, been in for repairs 3 times already for the same thing. Very dangerous problem, car very unreliable!!.

31 Engine Exhaust System problem of the 2001 Volkswagen Jetta

Failure Date: 05/09/2005

Dealership refused to fix the problem with the 2001 Volkswagen Jetta. The manufacturer provided the consumer with an extended warranty for the mass air flow sensor to 7 years/70000 miles, whichever occurs first. The vehicle was take for a state emission inspection but failed the test. The dealer refused to replace the mass air flow sensor under the extended warranty.

32 Engine Exhaust System problem of the 2000 Volkswagen Jetta

Failure Date: 12/03/2004

There is a continuing problem with the exhaust system. I have had to have it repaired 3 times in the last year and half. The Volkswagen dealership has repaired it over and over again. I am getting really worried that one of these days something really bad is going to happen, and I may be injured. I would buy another car but I simply can't afford it. After fixing an exhaust 3 times who could afford anything else. I am a loyal Volkswagen owner and this is the second vw I have owned and I never had a problem with any of the other cars. If there is anything you can do to help it would be greatly appreciated you.

33 Engine Exhaust System problem of the 2002 Volkswagen Jetta

Failure Date: 12/02/2004

The torque arm sheared off. As a result, axle transmission was not bolted to the frame. The consumer stated that the vehicle was parked. The vehicle was put in reverse and it started bucking and making a lot of noise. The vehicle would not shift from gear to gear without bucking. The steering wheel was not steering correctly. Exhaust became loud.

34 Engine Exhaust System problem of the 2001 Volkswagen Jetta

Failure Date: 06/15/2004

After owning this car for 3 years, a strong, toxic smell began to come out of the vents / front of the car. The only way I can describe it is that it smells like burning crayons. I took it to my mechanics and said he found nothing wrong with it. He offered to look into it further, but I didn't want to pay the labor charges without knowing the problem. I've searched the internet extensively and have found at least 25 people citing the same "crayon smell. " Volkswagen customer service representatives say they have never heard of this problem. I find that hard to believe. The only explanation I've found that makes some sense is that there is some sort of insulation between the engine and the dashboard and it may melting and causing fumes to enter the interior of the car.

35 Engine Exhaust System problem of the 2000 Volkswagen Jetta

Failure Date: 04/05/2004

Owner tried to start engine after vehicle sitting unused for one week. Engine would not start, so owner jump-started it and let it run approximately 5 minutes.
