1 Engine problem of the 2005 Volkswagen Jetta

Failure Date: 08/21/2011

Own a 2005 vw Jetta, brought into dealership today with 106k miles on it and now they are saying the timing chain has jumped. This sounds like it is a common problem, so why isn't there a recall.

2 Engine problem of the 2006 Volkswagen Jetta

Failure Date: 02/22/2011

The overhead cam on my 06 vw Jetta tdi failed causing extensive engine damage. This is a common occurrence with this year and model vehicle. The manufacture does not acknowledge a problem. I changed the engine oil per the owners manual at 10k intervals using only vw 505. 01 spec engine oil, acquired from the dealership.

3 Engine problem of the 2006 Volkswagen Jetta

Failure Date: 02/17/2011

I was leaving for a trip from milwaukee to madison to start a long weekend vacation. I was I-94 traveling 65 mph when my vehicle's epc light came on and the engine died. This rendered me usless on a busy highway fearing for my safety. The car died in the middle of heavy traffic due to it being the end of the work day. The timing chain broke on the vehicle while in motion causing engine interference and requiring a replacement. No assistance was provided by vw stating it was fault of operator error. Independent company that put replacement engine in stated this malfunction could not have been caused by no adhering to preventative maintenance or operator error as car manufacturer previously mentioned.

4 Engine problem of the 2009 Volkswagen Jetta

Failure Date: 09/21/2010

I was driving my car when suddenly the engine quit, and all error messages came up. It was right in front of a busy intersection. I was unable to restart when tried at least 3 times. I waited about 5 minutes and then I was able to start. The service did not find anything wrong. I am worried that it can happen again and I will be not as lucky as this time to avoid someone hitting me from the back as the car unexpectedly just stops.

5 Engine problem of the 2010 Volkswagen Jetta

Failure Date: 09/09/2010

2010 Volkswagen Jetta repeatedly shuts off while driving. Power and accessories work (ac, radio) but engine will not restart unless car is placed in park and key is turned off and then on again. Attempting to restart the engine with the transmission in neutral does not work. This has happened while accelerating, while stopped and after sudden braking. Twice on the freeway (est speed 65 mph) and once when stopped while going downhill.

6 Engine problem of the 2005 Volkswagen Jetta

Failure Date: 08/30/2010

2005. 5 new Jetta 60,000 miles and the timing chain has slipped teeth and thrown the engine out of time. New timing chain from dealer is between $4700-$5600. All maintenance and service was done at the dealer. From internet searches it appears this is a growing problem on early model years. The dealer has also added to their owners manual that the timing chain is now a serviceable item. However it was never in my manuals.

7 Engine problem of the 2002 Volkswagen Jetta

Failure Date: 07/22/2010

Loss of power on freeway, without warning. Vehicle lost power, then, while attempting to restore power by 'pumping' the accelerator, shifted into second gear, resulting in a very rapid deceleration from 70 mph to 45 mph. This occurred twice in one hour, at both times requiring following motorists to swerve severely to avoid.

8 Engine problem of the 2009 Volkswagen Jetta

Failure Date: 12/20/2009

I have a 2009 vw Jetta tdi. I was in my work parking lot. Started the vehicle, backed out driving out of the parking lot when the engine stopped and turned off. I coasted the vehicle into a parking spot. Turned it off and restarted the vehicle. No lights came up and it started with no problem. I advised dealership of the problem and they checked it out and said it was ok, and to call if it occurred again. It has not.

9 Engine problem of the 2002 Volkswagen Jetta

Failure Date: 10/24/2009

2002 vw Jetta 2. 0 stopped and sputtered on main highway because of ignition coil failure. The car has 7500 miles and vw acknowledges the problem for 1. 8 liter engines but not for 2. 0 liter. They are recalling 90000 1. 8 cars but are charging $600 for the 2. 0 fixes. Surely, they bought them from the same supplier.

10 Engine problem of the 2009 Volkswagen Jetta

Failure Date: 08/15/2009

Windshield wipers system failed in snow storm. Parts replaced complete loss of engine power while driving in traffic. 8 times this has happened. Dealer can not find cause. No start situation, twice. Dealer can not find cause. Transmission noise. Dealer can not find cause, will replace transmission if noise continues.

11 Engine problem of the 2009 Volkswagen Jetta

Failure Date: 08/01/2009

2009 Jetta tdi has an issue with sudden loss of engine power. Usually 100% reproducible in warm climate usually happens within the first few minutes of starting engine while traveling at 30mph at 2k rpms while holding a steady speed. Car will suddenly jerk and lose power one time then the remaining time will be without issue. On at least two occasions while pulling out into traffic the car has intermittently lost all power for a few seconds almost resulting in certain personal injury accidents. This was due to the fact that after starting the car I took a phone call before entering traffic. I feel that this is a temperature/time related problem as the time I was on the phone would about equal the time that when I normally would have left the lot the car would have had the hiccup/stutter. Numerous complaints about this particular issue can be found on the internet and this has been documented that vwoa has been called about this but seems to not want to do anything to rectify the situation.

12 Engine problem of the 2000 Volkswagen Jetta

Failure Date: 02/10/2009

My 2000 Volkswagen Jetta needed a full replacement of the oil pan and gasket. There is no reason that this part should need to be replaced. Also at 121,000 miles the catalytic converter was replaced and Volkswagen had it under extended warranty up to 120,000 and would not replace the part for me. There is no reason these parts should need replacement. The car has 129,500 miles on it, has been garaged, never been in an accident and has mostly highway miles on it.

13 Engine problem of the 2001 Volkswagen Jetta

Failure Date: 05/06/2008

The contact owns a 2001 Volkswagen Jetta. The contact started the ignition and the engine warning indicator illuminated on the instrument panel. The warning indicator remained lit until the engine was turned off. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic ten times and they stated that the failure was related to the air filter sensor. The vehicle was repaired. The failure mileage was 40,000 and current mileage was 42,000.

14 Engine problem of the 2000 Volkswagen Jetta

Failure Date: 08/22/2007

The contact owns a 2000 Volkswagen Jetta. While driving 65 mph, the vehicle began to shake and then shut off completely. The check engine warning indicator light illuminated and the contact smelled smoke. The vehicle was towed to the dealer and they stated that the coil pack failed. The vehicle has not been repaired. The current and failure mileages were 84,000.

15 Engine problem of the 2004 Volkswagen Jetta

Failure Date: 02/05/2007

2004 vw Jetta with base 4 cylinder engine with 28k as of 2/1/07. Car is using 4-qts of 5w-40 synthetic motor oil every oil change (every 5000 miles). Vw claims that 1-qt per 1000 miles is normal, refuse to fix the engine.

16 Engine problem of the 2002 Volkswagen Jetta

Failure Date: 10/22/2006

The oil pan is made of aluminum and the drain plug is metal. When my mechanic changed it out it was stripped causing me to have to pay for a new oil pan, screw and labor of about 440. 00. I am requesting a full refund and asking vw to replace the drain plain with an aluminum screw or replace the oil pan. After reviewing vw blogs other cars are having this same issue. The second thins is the transmission service. I had been requesting over the last 3 years from the dealer that my transmission be serviced but they told me it was not serviceable. Even my mechanic who called to fix the oil they also told him that because my transmission was not changing gears properly. He pulled it any and found that the fluid was black and the filter was clogged not allowing in fluid to flow through. Had I waited two weeks more I would have had to replaced the entire transmission. Another coast of about 120. 00. . . Total request from vw is 1000 for replacement cost and labor.

17 Engine problem of the 2002 Volkswagen Jetta

Failure Date: 10/10/2006

Engine revs high when accelerator is depressed, but does not accelerate. This happened a number of times when attempting to merge into high speed traffic.

18 Engine problem of the 2004 Volkswagen Jetta

Failure Date: 07/25/2006

2004 Volkswagen Jetta. Consumer states when driving in stop and go traffic the engine will have loss of power and hesitation when accelerating.

19 Engine problem of the 2002 Volkswagen Jetta

Failure Date: 07/14/2006

While driving in the afternoon, my vehicle suddenly lost power and acceleration capability with the "check engine" light coming on and blinking. I took it to the dealer immediately. I am informed my 2002 vw Jetta 1. 8t has "3 faulty coils. " the failure was sudden and without warning. I maintain my car according to vw specs. In 02/2003 vw acknowledged a problem with this in over 530,000 2001 to early 2003 vehicles. I feel the failure was premature (as to what could be typically expected of an engine/vehicle for reliability), and a danger. Obviously the fact that it has remanifested in such a short period of time shows that it was not properly addressed with the original fix only 2 years ago. My vehicle was unable to adequately maintain itself within the flow of traffic. I was lucky to get to the 'slow lane' without incident. Vw disclaims any responsibility for defect or otherwise and says that because the vehicle is out of its warranty period I am responsible ($454. 00). I will pay this, but how can I drive knowing that these coils could stop all or any one cylinder from correctly firing? this could kill me and the manufacturer does not care. . As they quite bluntly stated.

20 Engine problem of the 1999 Volkswagen Jetta

Failure Date: 05/24/2006

1999 Jetta's oil pan threads were stripped and drain plug needed to be replaced.

21 Engine problem of the 2003 Volkswagen Jetta

Failure Date: 03/26/2006

2003 Volkswagen Jetta caught on fire while driving. A vehicle following my sons car on a major interstate (my son was out of state returning home) noticed smoke coming from under the car and blow horn and flickered lights. My son looked in his rear view mirror and saw smoke and immediately pulled off the road. The fire department was called by vehicle following. The Jetta never lost power and when he pulled off the road and he had to turn the ignition off. The Jetta was smoking and the fire started immediately and with in minutes full flames. There was a loud boom and it came from the front of the Jetta. The fire department could not get the fire out and had to break through the hood. The whole front (engine area) was burned. The Jetta was still under warranty therefore we personally went to the dealership to report (thinking still under warranty they would provide a rental and want to investigate) all they did was refer us to Volkswagen. I contacted Volkswagen on March 27, 2005 and to make a long story short I had to report to my insurance. Volkswagen also told me that if it was a manufacturer defect. . . . They would only pay what insurance would pay??????? my son also talked to the owner of the dealership and all that was said is he (the dealership owner) was sorry and good thing he (my son ) had insurance. The dealership didn't even offer to try and help us get back into a vehicle. There was no indication (no engine warning, no power lose, smell etc. ) there was anything wrong. The smoke was going up under the Jetta and out under the back. The blessing is the vehicle behind my son. . . . What if he hadn't caught my sons attention?????????? the auto insurance didn't cover for what was lost in the vehicle, just the Jetta. All scheduled maintenance were done as recommended by Volkswagen?????.

22 Engine problem of the 2002 Volkswagen Jetta

Failure Date: 09/21/2005

I have taken my 2002 vw Jetta turbo to the dealer numerous times in the past year that I have owned it, including two days after I purchased it for a "check engine" light. In the past two months, my car has been at the dealer's service dept more than I have driven it. I just picked up my car last Wednesday, and the light came on again today.

23 Engine problem of the 1997 Volkswagen Jetta

Failure Date: 12/09/2004

Turn signal switch sometimes work and sometimes doesn't. . . Can't lock doors on driver side with my master key, can only lock and set alarm on passenger side. Airbag light stays on. . . Vehicle cuts off randomly when slowing down or stopping. . . Without notice!.

24 Engine problem of the 2001 Volkswagen Jetta

Failure Date: 11/05/2004

Engine coil pack malfunctioned.

25 Engine problem of the 2001 Volkswagen Jetta

Failure Date: 09/10/2004

Safety issue with 2001 vw Jetta. The drivers side seat became unusually hot than normal and the interior leather covering developed a metallic appearance. A vw representative looked at the seat and stated it looked like external damaged, but the seat had to be fully inspected first. The consumer was told the she would be responsible for the labor if was determined it was not the heating element, but if it was the heating element vw would cover all costs. After the inspection, the consumer was told a beverage was spilled on the seat which caused the heating seat to malfunction. The consumer also stated the vehicle consumed an excessive amount of oil, in which the oil light illuminated.

26 Engine problem of the 2001 Volkswagen Jetta

Failure Date: 09/01/2004

2001 Jetta original owner the oil pan needs to be replaced because it is made out of aluminum and the plug is made out of steel . Since the plug is made out of a harder material it stripped the pan. The car is out of warranty so know I will have to pay 600 dollars.

27 Engine problem of the 2002 Volkswagen Jetta

Failure Date: 08/10/2004

Was currently deployed in support of operation iraqi freedom for more than a year, my car was at my parents, being driven once or twice a week to keep engine in good shape. Some of these things have been since returning in April 2004, others happened prior to leaving in February 2003. It's a 2002 Jetta GLS. I shouldn't be having these type of problems this soon. 1. Oil plug on oil pan is almost stripped from getting oil changes (advised by 3 different garages). Currently attempting to get a new plug, an oversized one per 2 garages. 2. Patches of paint seem to be almost chipping away (on several spots all over the car). Took it to the dealer & they said it was due to bird poop. My car stays in a garage & gets washed bi-weekly. 3. The coating on both inside door handles is peeling. 4. The window mechanism needed fixed. Dealer fixed. 5. Recall about brake light fixed by dealer.

28 Engine problem of the 2004 Volkswagen Jetta

Failure Date: 03/09/2004

Purchased 2004 vw Jetta gli on 3/5/04 with delivery on 3/7/04. Car had 41 miles at delivery. By Monday, 3/8/04 noticed burning smell on driver's side of car while shifiting between 1st & 3rd gears. Also noticed vibration in brake pedal at idle and vibration in steering column while braking. Complained at dealership that car was failing with 181 miles on the odometer. Service tech test drove the car with me. Could not identify burning smell, but suggested I try driving the car without the seat heaters on to see if it made any difference (it didn't). Don't understand why there'd be a connection between rpm's and the seat heaters. Will have to go get a fire extinguisher to carry in the car as a precaution, I suppose. Major problem was the vibration in steering wheel upon braking. Turns out all 4 brake rotors were warped (at 181 miles???). Technician replaced all 4 brake rotors and front brake pads. Vibration in brake pedal at idle was explained as brake vacuum pump regenerating pressure. Sales manager I spoke with couldn't understand why I was upset since they were willing to fix the car.

29 Engine problem of the 2002 Volkswagen Jetta

Failure Date: 01/17/2004

I own a 2002 Jetta purchased from a vw dealership in towson MD in April, 02. I have close to 30000 miles on my car. About two months ago I noticed that my oil light came on. It was about 2000 miles until my next oil change. Oil is changed every 5k miles. When I checked my dipstick it was dry. I had to add about three quarts. Now about every 1k miles my car consumes about 1. 5 qt of oil. This is a big problem. I read the owners manual regarding oil consuption with the Jetta and it said it will consume oil when the engine is new. Mine is not. There are posts all over the internet regarding this issue and something has to be done.

30 Engine problem of the 2001 Volkswagen Jetta

Failure Date: 10/10/2003

I bought a previously owned vw Jetta GLS with 25,000 mi on September 22, 2003. Two weeks later, the oil light came on briefly as I was parking at home. I checked the dipstick and it was dry. I called the dealer and it was towed and checked and a fluorescent probe was put in and I was told there were two quarts of oil remaining. Where did the oil go? my car is scheduled to go in for a check on this problem this week. There was no oil on the ground and the service tech said they had a problem like this once before. Has this problem ever been addressed by other consumers? thank you.

31 Engine problem of the 2001 Volkswagen Jetta

Failure Date: 05/19/2003

2001 Volkswagen Jetta (complaint numbers 30291114,30343786 and 03092183) our 2001 Jetta started clicking and blowing white smoke. We called the dealership and they said it was the turbo and would be covered under warranty. We towed the car to them on may 19, 2003 and they did replace the turbo. However, they advised us the vehicle needed a new engine because it was still clicking. They said it looked like we had not been changing the oil which is why the engine was clogged. The service department then gave us the run around for a few months. They wanted oil change receipts, which we provided. The mechanic told us the turbo replacement was denied by vw and they ate the cost. He told us they would not do any more work on the car. On July 09, 2003 we had the car towed from the dealership. I went to vw and spoke with the new service manager, donnie fielder. The new service manager told me they had just replaced a guys engine that had the same problem as ours. He said they messed up and replaced it under warranty no questions asked and later decided he had not changed the oil. He said they could not afford to pay for another engine and would not touch our vehicle. I took the car to alternative imports on charlotte avenue. Sam (a. I. ) said the engine was full of sludge. He found several similar cases on a mechanics web site. He also found that vw did not properly complete the turbo replacement. The engine is the same one (1. 8l turbo) that vw has acknowledged, at least in the passat, has a sludge problem. However, they do not acknowledge that the same problem exists in the Jetta even though it is the same engine. They extended the warranty on the passats to 8 years unlimited mileage.

32 Engine problem of the 2000 Volkswagen Jetta

Failure Date: 05/04/2003

I have a 2000 Jetta and its a good car but it has problems like other Jetta owners that I have talked to. I have taken it to a shop and asked them about my problem and they told me it was a common problem with these kinds of Jettas. The complaint is when I change the oil or have a good amout of oil in the engine it gets eaten at a quicker rate than it should. It takes like 2-3 days then I have to replace a quart of oil or more to make it a good level. The amount of oil being consumed is not good for the engine or for the evironment.

33 Engine problem of the 2002 Volkswagen Jetta

Failure Date: 01/25/2003

I have experienced 3 separate incidents in the last 4 months where an engine coilpack in my 2002 vw Jetta 1. 8l turbo failed while I was driving the car. In each case, I have experienced a sudden, dramatic loss of power and the car begins to shudder. The last time this happened (1/25/2003), I was driving in traffic at ~45 mph and was nearly hit by another car due to my sudden engine trouble. Vw continues to replace the coilpacks but acknowledges that they are prone to failing suddenly and without warning. The last time one failed, it was replaced with the newly designed coilpack which wasn't supposed to be failure-prone. I asked that each of the individual coilpacks (4 total) be replaced due to the fact that the older ones were susceptible to failure but was told that vw would only replace them as they failed. This time, the newly designed coilpack failed, as well as one of the other, older ones. I am awaiting 2 replacement coilpacks; however, they are the same design as the 2 which just failed. Frankly, I am afraid to drive my car at highway speeds, as there is absolutely no guarantee that the same problem won't happen again without warning.

34 Engine problem of the 2002 Volkswagen Jetta

Failure Date: 01/21/2003

This is a complaint about the well known vw 1. 8t ignition coil problem.

35 Engine problem of the 2001 Volkswagen Jetta

Failure Date: 01/10/2003

Consumer stated while driving at 40mph the engine makes a severe noise and then a vibration is felt as if the engine is loosing power, which was due to a faulty engine coil pack that went bad. Dealer was notified and will change only one coil. Duke gold's speed way Volkswagen dealer, will not replace the coil at least in the following next 3 weeks because there is a national back order. Please provide further information.
