4 Engine Shut Off Without Warning problem of the 2014 Volkswagen Jetta

Failure Date: 11/15/2019

After exiting the freeway and got to the overpass I had to stop, after a accelerated the engine shut down, lost all electrical power except for the radio, fortunately after the overpass was a downgrade so the car was able to coast to safety on to the shoulder. This has not been the first incident where the vehicle has lost complete power while driving in city streets. This is my wife's car, she had complained to me of the car not starting after she gotten off work, we tried to jump started it and it still would not start, so it had to wait till I got off from work. Soon as I got to the vehicle after my shift, I tried to crank start it and the vehicle started with out hesitation. While driving in the city street, after making a stop the vehicle engine shut off, I was unaware since the radio was still playing, so my wife pointed out this had been happening to her as well, even after we replaced the battery. So I took the vehicle to my mechanic and he mentioned that this could be an alternator problem, so we replaced the alternator as well, but the vehicle continues to shut down or it just won't start. I decided to check the wiring to the battery and to the distributor and after doing this the vehicle will start up again. Last episode was on 11/15/2019 as I exited the freeway on my way to work. When I got home I remembered that my wife had handed me a couple of latters from the vw dealer witch we had omitted since we bought the vehicle used in a car lot. This is how I found out that these letters where notices of the recalls on this particular vehicle. I shared this with a friend that claims he also had the same problem with a vw vehicle he owned, he explained that the problem in his unknown vw model, the electrical wiring was at fault. I'm scheduled to bring the vehicle in for a recall for the key column, witch is not associated to the problem according to vw rep.

I had been driving my car for one hour. I made a quick stop at my house to pick something up. I pulled back into the street and started to drive down the road when my engine shut down in the middle of the road. I had to push my car to the side of the road. Multiple attempts by myself and a tow truck were unable to restart the car and it had to be towed. After extensive troubleshooting, the dealer determined my engine control module had failed and had shut all power to my fuel injectors. Luckily, I was not traveling very fast at the time nor was there any surrounding traffic. This cost ~$2000 to repair.

22 Engine Shut Off Without Warning problem of the 2009 Volkswagen Jetta

Failure Date: 03/06/2015

Vehicle engine shut off during travel, due to fuel filter being clogged by metal debris. The high pressure injection pump failed effectively ending the life of the engine. The welds on the high pressure injection pump had deteriorated, resulting metal debris to circulate through complete injection system. After multiple failed attempts to flush out the injection system it was decided that the best course of action was to replace the engine if a replacement could be found. A replacement was found and the current engine installed has the same high pressure injection pump, as a replacement part is not available to independent shops, only to dealerships. Cost of replacing engine - $8,500. 00.

24 Engine Shut Off Without Warning problem of the 2010 Volkswagen Jetta

Failure Date: 12/09/2014

I was driving to work in my 2010 vw Jetta sportswagen tdi and was in a middle of an s turn when my car shut off, as I was coasting I tried to restart my car, when I did so my steering did not work. I was able to negotiate the s turn, but my car would not turn on. I had it towed to my dealer and they checked it out and said that there is water in the inner cooler due to condensation from the air intake. To me this sounds like a design flaw since when I inquired what will prevent this from happening again, they responded that the air intake part has been redesigned to prevent this from happening again. This was a very scary ordeal. If I did not have my wits about me I could have ended in the woods, luckily I was able to navigate the s turn. When I contacted Volkswagen they where willing to pay 75% of the cost even though I requested that they should cover the whole repair. Regardless, I am concerned what happened to me could happen to someone else with a less favorable outcome. What if this happen while crossing an intersection? I am hoping that you are already researching this issue for a recall, if not I hope you will look into this issue. Thank you for reading my complaint.

The second incident happened more quickly and in a parking garage and nearly resulted in a collision. The jerking happens at all speeds, including on the highway.

27 Engine Shut Off Without Warning problem of the 2014 Volkswagen Jetta

Failure Date: 05/29/2014

On Thursday, may 29th, I was driving my 2014 vw Jetta hybrid sel premium (~165 miles on odometer) when the epc and battery light came on the dash. At the same time, the gas engine shut off. I was able to get the vehicle to restart. Same issue happened two additional times before I got the vehicle to the dealership the next morning. I picked up the vehicle Monday, June 2nd, from the dealership (~387 miles on odometer) stating that the vehicle was in working order and they could not get the problem to duplicate. The dealership put approximately 200 miles on the new vehicle to diagnose it. About an hour after picking up the vehicle (~393 miles on odometer), the vehicle did the exact same thing, except this time I was in a parking lot. The vehicle is back at the dealer and they are having an engineer come and diagnose the vehicle.

28 Engine Shut Off Without Warning problem of the 2010 Volkswagen Jetta

Failure Date: 02/16/2014

I was driving down the street when dash lights came on. . . Within minutes I lost power and eventually my car shut down. My hpfp went out and has sent shards of metal throughout the system. Apparently to the grand total of at least $7500 possibly more. I've been reading and see this is an is with the vw tdi motors I drive a 2010 vw Jetta tdi. . . At this point the fuel system needs flushed and or replaced I'm questioning the condition of the rest of my motor if metal pieces have been flushed through it.

29 Engine Shut Off Without Warning problem of the 2009 Volkswagen Jetta

Failure Date: 01/20/2014

My Jetta lost power from going 60mph to 35-40 and after a min it shut down on highway. I managed to push it on a shoulder and tried to start again but nothing happened. I towed it away to mechanic and found out that my high pressure fuel pump shattered and released bunch of tiny metal peaces in to the fuel filter and engine. Mechanic told me that it happened because of a design flaw with the pump that vw admitted but haven't done anything about that. So I'm wondering what if a semi truck came at the same time and hit me would they do something about it then?.

30 Engine Shut Off Without Warning problem of the 2010 Volkswagen Jetta

Failure Date: 01/04/2014

Was backing out of a parking space and then placing the car into drive. As I pressed the accelerator to pull away, the car started sputtering like it wanted to stall out. Immediately took it to dealer for scan and no codes found. Car has done this since and no codes again. Last incidence was last week and as I pressed the accelerator, the car sputtered so I left off the gas. Upon pressing the gas pedal again, car shut off and the battery light on the car came on. Placed car in park and it started with no incident from there. Took the vehicle to dealership and again no codes so they will not repair. I am scared this car will shut off in traffic leaving me in the middle of the road. Still waiting on a decision from vwoa regarding the safety and driveability of the car.

When making a left hand turn car stalls. Dash panel lights go out and battery warning light flashes and car shuts off. 33 Engine Shut Off Without Warning problem of the 2013 Volkswagen Jetta

Failure Date: 08/20/2013

This past may, we bought a vw Jetta gli at jennings Volkswagen (glenview, IL) for our son¿s last year of college. The car looked great and he loved it. At about 1000 miles, while he was driving with his friends, the car had a sudden loss of power ¿ a sudden engine shutdown. Luckily, he was crossing a parking lot so he waited until it restarted. We made no big deal of it and took it to jennings where they did not find anything. Then, just last week, at 3000 miles, the same happened while he was driving with our daughter in the car on west lake avenue. This time, we were concerned, since this happened during rush hour in a congested street. We worried now, since this was the second time this had happened. Our son drives to the city on a daily basis to attend school and he takes the highway. What if that had happened on the highway and a truck had been behind him? it could have been disastrous. We did some research and found out that there has been a fatal accident in australia with another vw, with the same type of transmission, experiencing sudden engine shutdown on the highway. There has been a recall of certain of these cars in china, japan, and australia for similar issues so we are really concerned. Our son took the car to jennings again, and was sent home with a rental car while they looked into the issue. They apparently did various driving and mechanical tests and could not reproduce the scenario, since apparently the car¿s computer had not registered any of the failures. The car dealership refused to buy back or replace the car.

34 Engine Shut Off Without Warning problem of the 2009 Volkswagen Jetta

Failure Date: 11/20/2012

I was driving on the interstate, at about 68 mph, when the engine completely shut down without any warning whatsoever. The car, having a manual transmission, was still in gear and slowed down very quickly without any warning to other drivers (no brake lights). I tried to push in the clutch and coast to the shoulder, and successfully made it off the highway. The car restarted, and I made it a few miles towards the dealer before it happened again, luckily on a low-traffic street. The car was towed the rest of the way towards the dealer and diagnosed as a failed high pressure fuel pump, causing catastrophic fuel system damage. The fuel rail, injectors, pump, tank, and all lines will need to be replaced as the result of the pump failure caused bits of metal flakes to circulate about the fuel system. The diagnosis and listed repairs were determined by the Volkswagen dealer.

35 Engine Shut Off Without Warning problem of the 2011 Volkswagen Jetta

Failure Date: 10/09/2012

Never received the recall notice for leaky fuel lines by my local dealer. My car developed a leak and almost caused a crash as it shut down while driving down the road. I am furious as I now also learned there is fuel pump failures being investigated by your organization and the dealer doesn't want to replace it right now while they are doing the fuel lines? this car is 14 months old there is no reason why this shouldn't all be replaced and warrantied for much longer I don't believe these cars are safe or dependable to drive and it's brand new! I think vw has done a horrible job and I don't want to ever buy a vw again.
