36 Ignition Coils Failure problem of the 2001 Volkswagen Jetta

Failure Date: 06/01/2005

The contact owns a 2001 Volkswagen Jetta. While driving 35 mph, the vehicle decelerated to 15 mph and the check engine light illuminated. The contact attempted to accelerate, but the vehicle speed failed to increase. After three minutes, the vehicle speed increased to 35 mph without warning. The dealer stated that the fuel pump needed to be replaced and performed the repair. Approximately six months later, the failure recurred. The dealer was unable to duplicate the failure. The check engine light illuminated immediately after leaving the dealer. The mechanic stated that the ignition coil needed to be replaced and performed the repair. The contact stated that there was a recall for the ignition coil, but the recall number was unavailable. The dealer stated that her vehicle was excluded from the recall. The current mileage is 150,000 and failure mileage was 45,000.

37 Ignition Coils Failure problem of the 2001 Volkswagen Jetta

Failure Date: 05/02/2005

2001 Volkswagen Jetta has a faulty ignition coil wiring harness. The consumer complained engine idle fluctuation and a miss in the engine when accelerating from a stop.

38 Ignition Coils Failure problem of the 2000 Volkswagen Jetta

Failure Date: 02/14/2005

2000 vw Jetta, vr6 engine, 49,3331 mile. Whenever my car was idle for more than 6-8 hours and was exposed to rainy\wet weather, the engine would experience performance issues. Immediately after starting the car under these circumstances, the engine would sputter and sound like it was on the verge of stalling. If I attempted to drive the car without letting it fully warm-up, the engine would experience a severe performance degradation, characterized by poor, rough acceleration. The “check engine light would also illuminate, and I would receive the “emissions workshop warning message. This problem has occured several times over the past 1-2 years. At first the problem was mild, but over time it worsened. I took the car into the dealer for service and was informed that the ignition coil and ignition leads needed replacement to resolve the problem. These parts have been replaced, and thus far the issue with my engine has not reappeared. Vw issued an ignition coil recall for various other 2001, 2002 and 2003 models. It appears the ignition coil recall should be expanded to include other model years as this is not the kind of part that should need regular replacement. It's quite obvious there's a defect with this part.

39 Ignition Coils Failure problem of the 2002 Volkswagen Jetta

Failure Date: 01/06/2005

Repeat ignition coil and ingition coil wiring harness failure. The coils fail to spark resulting in reduced engine power and the wiring harness sheathing keeps cracking apart, resulting in ground out on the engine.

40 Ignition Coils Failure problem of the 2001 Volkswagen Jetta

Failure Date: 11/24/2004

This summer my left rear door became inoperable. In late October the turn signals began operating intermittently. On a cold and rainy day this November my 2001 Jetta with 37000 miles stalled while making a left turn. I restarted and completed my turn, thinking I had just let out the clutch too fast. The car was a bit sluggish and a 1/2 mile down the road the check engine light came on. I took the car to the dealer on November 30 and was shocked not only at the problems but that they were not coverered by any warranty. The total repair bill was over $1000 dollars. The ignition coil pack needs replaced for $740. The hazard light switch needs replaced for $77. Just to find out what is wrong with the door requires a charge of $188 dollars. These problems have been mentioned several times on your website. I guess I just hit the trifecta.

41 Ignition Coils Failure problem of the 2001 Volkswagen Jetta

Failure Date: 07/06/2004

Upon exiting the highway my car suddenly turned off. I had to coast and veer off to the side of the road, just narrowly avoiding being hit by two cars. I was able to start my car again, but was only able to keep the engine running by revving it so that it had a high rpm. The only way that I was able to keep the engine running whenever I reached traffic, a stop sign, or a stop light was to shift from drive to neutral and revving my engine. I had my car towed to Volkswagen, and the problem was an ignition coil failure. This is the same part that the six cylinder Jettas were recalled by Volkswagen for, but was only given a 10,000 mile extension on the four cylinder Jettas. This is particularly troubling because the part "goes" without any warning. I narrowly avoided an accident with my 18 month old son seated in the back of the car. Vw charged me a little over $1,000 for parts and labor. I was, and remain, extremely dissatisfied, and have reported the incident to vw's 1-800 number. The representative agreed that the four cylinder Jettas should be recalled as the six cylinders have, but that vw only offers the 10,000 mile ignition coil extension for the four cylinder Jettas in the mean time.

42 Ignition Coils Failure problem of the 1998 Volkswagen Jetta

Failure Date: 04/22/2004

I own a 1998 volkswagon Jetta, wolfsburg edition. I've been stranded a total of 6 or 7 times (losing count) on the interstate by this vehicle. Purchased this vehicle from a private owner less than a year ago and have experienced numerous mysterious problems ever since. I work for the state of indiana, communte into indianapolis 5 days a week, I am an interstate traveler. I have forgiven most of the problems this car has had, but recently have reached the limit. Just last week I was once again stranded on the interstate during rush hour and my car suddenly stopped running and smoke began to rise from my steering column. This situation terrified me. Not only did I have to urgently coast to the shoulder of the interstate, but I was in fear that the car would be on fire due to seeing this smoke. The car was towed and the ignition coil was replaced; although the service man didn't think that was the source of the smoke from my steering column. I know from reading other complaints that the bad ignition coil in these vehicles is a common problem. There are existing recalls on some volkswagon ignition coils. This seems unjust considering they used the same ignition coil in the 1998 that they did in other vehicle years. This repair cost me $400, which is just icing on the cake for me right now. Now my airbag light is on and the serviceman who replaced the ignition coil says all is connected and he thinks the smoke in the car was coming from the airbag wiring. He said there's no way to disconnect the airbag (to stop any chance of it exploding out on me while driving). If it comes out while driving. . I am dead. If it fails in an accident. I could be dead. I am afraid to even have my family in the car. I honestly think it's entire electrical system is wired incorrectly. Please assist me in getting justice served. I've heard of so many others who are mistreated and ignored by volkswagon. This vehicle's repeated failure should be noted. I appreciate anything you can do.

43 Ignition Coils Failure problem of the 2000 Volkswagen Jetta

Failure Date: 10/14/2003

My Jetta has been back at the dealer 5 times in the past two months to repair the same problem. The car hesitates upon acceleration as if it will stall. The check engine light comes on. Sometimes it stays on until they reset it and sometimes it goes off. The dealer has replaced the mass air sensor and cleaned parts of the engine. Then the intake manifold had to be replaced. Now they told me the problem is the ignition coil and wires for an additional $700. 00. This car is just three years old and I have spent close to $2000 in repairs in two months. I didn't even made it out of the dealer's parking lot before the check engine light came on again. Vw needs to address this issue but their customer service representatives won't help.

44 Ignition Coils Failure problem of the 1999 Volkswagen Jetta

Failure Date: 10/04/2003

Ignition coil pack on vw Jetta, '99 new body. Hints of failure began long before cross country road trip but did not warrant a service. (ie, jerks when starting the vehicle during heavy rain) after road trip, problem grew in severity, brought in for service, and realized coil pack needed replacement.

45 Ignition Coils Failure problem of the 1999 Volkswagen Jetta

Failure Date: 10/02/2003

Check engine light on, car runs rough when wet. Has always. Bring it in for diagnostic and they say it is the ignition coil pack. It was replaced and the day after service is completed on the way to work check engine light comes on again. Bring it back in and after another diagnostic hook up and another $72 later now they say there are 2 more faults. The ignition wires need replacing and the long term fuel trim is running lean. I do some research on line and find out vw has had ignition coil problems and had recalls on 2001 and 2002 model years after a class action suit was filed. I contacted vw before I knew about the class action suit and the problems vw has had with the ignition coil packs and was told that they couldn't assist me. Go figure. A company who has had these very same problems in the past with other models and years isn't taking responsibility for defective parts. I am very unhappy with vw service, both at the dealer and there headquarters for not acknowledging the problem and for not taking responsibility. There is an attorney who is doing a class action investigation into the ignition coil pak problem. It is gg&d, girard, gibbs, and DE bartolomeo. They are based in san francisco and have a web site. You can email them if you've had any problems with your ignition coil pack needing replacing. I think it is horrible that vw won't admit of any liability in this matter especially since they've had a class action suit already for other years. It is just too coincidental that others are still experiencing ignition coil problems. So far, I have spent over $1600 to fix these problems. I guess I won't be buying anymore Volkswagens.

46 Ignition Coils Failure problem of the 1998 Volkswagen Jetta

Failure Date: 06/12/2003

Ignition coil problem . Dealer notified.

47 Ignition Coils Failure problem of the 2001 Volkswagen Jetta

Failure Date: 05/25/2003

Myself and three other passengers were nearly hurt on the highway when my vw started acting up. The check engine light came on and then the power dwindle. It was very scary! took the vehicle to the dealer and it was found to have a defective ignition coil. I called vw and informed them of this and they said they would review it but couldn't guarantee that they would cover the cost.

48 Ignition Coils Failure problem of the 2002 Volkswagen Jetta

Failure Date: 05/25/2003

Ignition coil failure. This is the third failure of the electrical system on this auto. On the previous two failures, vw would not replace all four coils, but only those coils that were the cause of the problem. As a result work time has been lost, and it has been a great inconvenience to take time off of work, have the car towed, and travel to the repair facility. Request vw be required to initiate a recall to fix all problems.

49 Ignition Coils Failure problem of the 2002 Volkswagen Jetta

Failure Date: 05/21/2003

I want to know why NHTSA has done nothing about the vw ignition coil failures. This is a serious safety issue --the car can die at any moment, at any speed, under any conditions-- but apparently the agency does not care. I am afraid to drive my car any distance greater than 20 miles for fear of being stranded for hours (I live in a rural area). Vw has been unresponsive, essentially telling consumers that they must wait until a failure occurs before a fix will be offered. This places many at risk needlessly. I would appreciate a follow-up as to why there is no action being taken.

50 Ignition Coils Failure problem of the 2001 Volkswagen Jetta

Failure Date: 04/14/2003

I have a 2001 Volkswagen Jetta GLS vr6. In April of 2003 I experienced problems with my car where especially in wet conditions, the car would hesitate and misfire then the check engine light would blink on and off. It got to the point where it was difficult to drive because it was losing power. I took it to the dealership and they diagnosed it as the ignition coil pack was bad. They explained that this was an expensive part and that it would cost over $1300. 00 to repair and was not covered under warranty. I did some research and found that many similar Volkswagens were having the same problems and the manufacturer had a recall out on the coil pack. I contacted Volkswagen and they claimed that my engine was not a part of the recall but that they would give me a courtesy and cover the cost of the repairs. In October of 2005 I began to have the problem with my car again. I brought it back to the dealership and again they diagnosed that my ignition coil pack was bad. I again did research and read several articles online that vw was recalling the coil pack for my particular model. I contacted vw and they would not do anything about it because in their system, my car didn't qualify. I explained that there has only been about 20,000 miles put on the car since the last occurance and to no avail would they help me out. They say that because of the age and mileage on my car they would not do another courtesy and because my VIN number does not qualify for the coil pack recall, it will not be covered under the recall. I have had several other friends with vw Jettas the same year as mine and they have had the same problem. Why hasn't vw listed my car in the recall. Having this issue twice in the short lifespan of the car signals that there is a default in the part and it should be taken care of by the manufacturer.

51 Ignition Coils Failure problem of the 2002 Volkswagen Jetta

Failure Date: 04/05/2003

A faulty ignition coil caused the engine to stall while driving. The dealer replaced the faulty coil pack.

52 Ignition Coils Failure problem of the 2002 Volkswagen Jetta

Failure Date: 03/23/2003

This is the second time in one month that I have taken my 2002 vw Jetta wagon in for repair for the ignition coil problem. How can a car manufacturer allow someone to drive around in a unsafe vehicle especially when you or the dealer can not predict when this will happen next? this problem needs to be resolved, but the corporations always win.

53 Ignition Coils Failure problem of the 2001 Volkswagen Jetta

Failure Date: 03/01/2003

Dear sirs: complaint against: Volkswagen (vw) of America, rochester hills, mi burlington vw (bvw) and enterprise car rental (ecr), both in burlington, NJ. "in order to minimize inconvenience to customers during repair, (vw) will offer alternative transportation at no cost. " - from vw website, ignition coil problem. I own a 2001 vw Jetta wolfsberg t1. 8. Purchased: 8/23/01. Current mileage: 17,200. Warranty: until 8/23/03. On 3/1/03, the 2nd engine malfunction occurred. One ignition coil malfunctioned & the car was towed to vw. When a new coil became available, car was repaired on 3/11/03. Vw allowance for rental cars is $25/day. I couldn't find a rental at this price. Bvw has arrangements w/ ecr (open m-f) next door on rt. 130 -- vw customers can get a car for $25/day. Thought I had insurance through my credit card, so I turned down loss damage waiver ($13/day). Ecr found damage on car. I am uncertain how or when damage occurred. I told them I would call my credit card company, and was told they wouldn't cover me -- I didn't pay for the rental. Why wasn't this made clear at the time of rental by bvw or ecr? I contacted vw to ask them why they don't notify their customers of this pitfall, and they said they should not have to -- vw customer care # 30127362. I have $500 deductible on my insurance, cost of damages to rental $548. 90, includes loss of use. I will pay ecr in good faith. Only one coil (of 4) replaced 3/11/03. Another one will likely malfunction, leaving me stranded at any time. Because I had insufficient insurance, I paid $548. 90 this time. What will I pay next time? what are my rights in dealing with Volkswagen? if parts were readily available on my car, which is under warranty, I would not have had to wait ten days for car repairs. All four ignition coils should have been replaced at one time for my safety. Right now I have a new car that is unreliable.

54 Ignition Coils Failure problem of the 2002 Volkswagen Jetta

Failure Date: 02/03/2003

I purchased a 2002 vw Jetta 1. 8t during the summer, 2002. I have recently been made aware of a safety-related defect with the ignition coils that vw is failing to do a recall to repair. While my understanding is that vw claims that this is not a safety issue, I am aware of publicized auto occurrences that point to a serious safety issue if this is not repaired. A recall is essential in order to repair this and correct this problem ASAP.

55 Ignition Coils Failure problem of the 2002 Volkswagen Jetta

Failure Date: 02/03/2003

Two of my ignition coils failed and I had to have the car towed to the dealership to have them replaced. Apparently this is a common problem with the 2002 Jetta 1. 8t. I would have liked to have all the defective coils replaced but I have read numerous complains that Volkswagen will not replace these because not enough parts have been produced. I should not have to have a car that is only one year old towed to the dealership. I don't understand why Volkswagen wouldn't do a voluntary recall on these as the problem seems to be widespread. I am happy with the service I received (colonical Volkswagen, westoborough MA) but disappointed in the manufactuer for not stepping up to the plate and notifying owners before their car leaves them stranded on the side of the road.

56 Ignition Coils Failure problem of the 2001 Volkswagen Jetta

Failure Date: 02/01/2003

This is to lodge a complaint against vw. . . Am forced to drive my 2001 Jetta despite the fact that my ignition coils could fail at any time. . . Although it appears vw doesn't want to admit it, this is clearly a safety issue. . These cars should be recalled. Ts.

57 Ignition Coils Failure problem of the 2002 Volkswagen Jetta

Failure Date: 01/30/2003

I own a 2002 Jetta 1. 8t and two of my four ignition coils have failed. Vw has told me that they can only replace ones that are broken and refuse to replace the remaining two coils. This is extremely dangerous. I am afraid to drive because I have no idea when the other two will fail and the most likely will (as I am told by my vw service advisor)!!!.

58 Ignition Coils Failure problem of the 2003 Volkswagen Jetta

Failure Date: 01/27/2003

Ignition coil failure on the 1. 8 liter turbo engine for the Volkswagen Jetta.

59 Ignition Coils Failure problem of the 2002 Volkswagen Jetta

Failure Date: 01/26/2003

Ignition coil pack failed upon initial start up of engine today. This is my third failure to date on a less than 1 year old car. This failure can lead to an accident as you immediately lose the ability to accelerate at anything other than a crawl. We will see fatalities and injuries eventually. Please make vwoa recall all applicable 1. 8 liter turbocharged vehicles when the parts aren't on back order.

60 Ignition Coils Failure problem of the 2003 Volkswagen Jetta

Failure Date: 01/23/2003

Ignition coil on a brand new vw will go bad. I own a 2003 vw Jetta 1. 8t. Ignition coil #3 went out while I was driving on the highway. Car just lost power and started to run very rough. Brought it in to dealership to repair and was inform that they are aware of this problem and parts are back ordered. Shouldn't there be a notice sent out to owners about this problem and it's potential risk?.

61 Ignition Coils Failure problem of the 2001 Volkswagen Jetta

Failure Date: 01/23/2003

Ignition coils on new Volkswagen 1. 8t motors are horrible. I know it's a nation wide problems, so why hasn't anything been done about it yet!!!!!!!??????? I'm tired of wondering when and where my car will break down. . . Something needs to happen.

62 Ignition Coils Failure problem of the 2003 Volkswagen Jetta

Failure Date: 01/20/2003

My wife's 2002 Volkswagen Jetta has a bad ignition coil. Both Volkswagen corporation and our local vw dealer, speedcraft in wakefield ri, admitted that they have a coil problem with all 2002 Jettas and passats. They further noted to my wife that they do not have enough parts on hand to perform an actual recall. We are demanding that they replace all 4 coils since they know that it is likely that all 4 will eventually fail. They are refusing to do this. We feel it is unacceptable for them to refuse fixing a problem they know will likely occur. Such a failure at the wrong time while driving could possibly cause an accident. We are fearing for our safety.

63 Ignition Coils Failure problem of the 2003 Volkswagen Jetta

Failure Date: 01/17/2003

Failure (cracked) of multiple ignition coil packs- causes engine to misfire/sputter- allowable emissions exceeded (mil-light indicator). Scc ***dimsii ivoq entry posted after 12/12/02 cut-over to artemis****770863****.

64 Ignition Coils Failure problem of the 2002 Volkswagen Jetta

Failure Date: 01/15/2003

Ignition coils of a 2002 vw Jetta 1. 8t "burned out" according to the dealer. He informed me this is a known and widespread issue. This causes the car to behave irratically, causing my vehicle to lunge forward while idling at a red light, and vibrate violently while driving at 20 mph on my residential street. After doing research on the internet talkign to the tow truck driver who towed the car to the dealership, and information from the dealership's mechanic, I have found that a large number of other owners have had this same problem with this part. Vw north America will not issue a recall voluntarilly, and this could cause a serious or fatal driving condition if this happens when travelling at highway speeds and the car begins to violently shake and vibrate as it did when I was driving, and I feel that it warrants further investigation by the NHTSA to see if an across the board recall is necessary to protect both owners of these vehilcles, as well as those who share the road with us. I have been told that due to the large number of people who have had the same problem that voldwagen cannot get enough of these coils to replace in those of us who need them, let alone a recall due to the sheer numbers of people who are breaking down due to this. . . This really should be looked into before it kills someone .

65 Ignition Coils Failure problem of the 2001 Volkswagen Jetta

Ignition coil failure, cylinder #3, July 10, 2002 at 19,597 mi. Ignition coil failure, cylinder #4, January 14, 2003 at 24,782 mi.

66 Ignition Coils Failure problem of the 2003 Volkswagen Jetta

Failure Date: 01/13/2003

Ignition coil packs are faulty on 2002 vw Jetta's with 1. 8t engines. There are four of these parts on each 1. 8t engine. This problem causes the engine to misfire to the point of the car will stall and can not be driven. Vw is aware of the problem and has not issued a recall and will only replace the defective coil that fails not all defective coils. Owners could be stranded on the roadside and face potential danger. One of my coils failed this January 13, 2003.

67 Ignition Coils Failure problem of the 2002 Volkswagen Jetta

Failure Date: 01/12/2003

While driving one of vehicle's ignition coils failed causing car to stall. The dealer advised consumer 1 more coil out of the four is badly damaged and will soon fail. Dealer will not replace until coil fails. Ts.

68 Ignition Coils Failure problem of the 2001 Volkswagen Jetta

Failure Date: 01/12/2003

When I started the car after a couple of days it was running really rough. Gradually it was losing power and the check engine light started flashing. When I got out of the car the exhaust smelt really bad. When I took it to the dealer the following day, he informed me that it was a ignition coil pack failure and that this problem was really common with the 1. 8l turbo engines. He also informed me that there was a national backlog with the part as there had been many failures and that I would have to wait atleast 2-3 weeks before the part would be available. I would consider this failure to be a safety issue because if the car had lost power in a busy road or a freeway it would have created a dangerous situation.

69 Ignition Coils Failure problem of the 2002 Volkswagen Jetta

Failure Date: 01/11/2003

Coil failure in 1. 8t engine. I have a '02 Jetta 1. 8t. One of the four ignition coils died while driving. Result was complete loss of power and sudden stop without benefit of brake lights. The car is then undrivable and needs to be towed to a dealer. This is a huge safety issue as had I been merging into traffic or had someone been behind me, this would have caused an accident. Vw acknowledges that there was a faulty design and has since redesigned the part. They also acknowledge that at some point every coil will fail in a simmilar manner. They, however, refuse to replace the other three pre-revision coils with the new part until each of them fails on its own. They further refuse to even sell the part (as it is easily fixed and would keep someone from becoming stranded if they had a spare. ) this is absolutely terrible. I will never buy another vw because of they way they have handled this issue. I am afraid to take my car anywhere outside of a few miles because I know that I will end up stranded at least three more times. I did not pay over $20,000 for an unsafe and unreliable car.

70 Ignition Coils Failure problem of the 2002 Volkswagen Jetta

Failure Date: 01/10/2003

My 2002 vw Jetta 1. 8t engine started to run rough, check engine light began to blink, and car smelled foul like burning rubber and sulfur. Engine power was significantly reduced. I was in busy traffic, but fortunately, was able to pull over safely. Had car. . . . . . Towed to vw dealer. No surprise- faulty ignition coil. Although this is known to be a bad part, dealer stated that vw would not replace all 4 coils, just the bad one, because the computer code only indicated one bad coil. Dealer said that vw doesn't have enough replacement parts to repair all 4. Just waiting for the others to fail. . . Hopefully in a safe location.
