Key gets stuck in ignition and I cannot turn off the engine. " when car is parked anywhere key usually won't turn to start car, eventually does, but sometimes the key will not turn to shut the car off, so it stays running till the key decides it wants to come out or run out of gas after saving for years, bought this car for our daughter, afraid to drive anywhere. May get stuck somewhere where key will not turn to start car. If a car does not turn off or start, this is a safety concern. I have only had the car less than 2 weeks and notice it is getting harder and harder to turn the key on or off. Many complaints regarding the same issue, which appears to be the ignition switch lock. Volkswagen should recall these cars for faulty ignition switches. Thank you - susan paul.
Key stuck in ignition! the key keeps getting stuck in on position in the ignition switch after coming to a stop. An excessive amount of wiggling, turning, pulling or jerking will eventually move the key to the off position. Sometimes it take up to 20 minutes by a strong person to accomplish this task. Although this car is out of warranty however this is a known issue and vw is aware of this issue. However vw USA has refused to recall nor pay towards the repair cost which has been quoted at $800 by the dealership.
Ignition switch gets stuck both when starting and while stopping, had to let my car run for hours before I had to wiggle out the key, dont think this will work for long.
Key stuck in on or off position - can't turn car off. Can't turn it on. Please look at the complaints under unknown/other - there are 38 other complaints about the key getting stuck in the ignition in either the on or off position. People don't realize it falls under electrical. I can't turn my car on half the time and can't turn it off other times. The key is just stuck in the ignition switch and nothing I do will make it move. It's just been towed to the shop for the last time! vw knows about this, the dealers know about this. It's dangerous! what am I supposed to do when I come out of a mall in the dark and my key won't turn in the lock? or when I go to park somewhere and the car won't turn off in the 92-degree heat. I am a single woman and this is extrememly dangerous. Imagine if ther are children in the car and you can't turn it off? I've tried everything everyone else has tried and now I'm going to trade the car in. But someoe needs to do something about this. The dealer (and multiple websites) say it's the ignition cylinder and very common with these cars. Dealers want $600 and up to fix it. And some people have replaced theirs more than once. This has been going on for nearly a year with my car. My car only has 70,000 miles on it. There are others with even fewer miles. Why is no one paying attention to this??? read the complaints under unknown/other - this is a very very common complaint with these vehicles and very dangerous. Where is the recall?????.

The contact called the dealer and was informed that the nylon bushing had fractured and jammed the key in the ignition switch. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was make aware of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 44,000.

Vehicle will not turn off. Key gets stuck in ignition switch and you cannot turn off vehicle or remove key. Dealer says this is common and once it starts happening, you cannot turn off the engine routinely. To finally turn it off, you have to use tremendous force and if that doesn't work, drive the vehicle around for a bit and then try again.
The key would not turn in the ignition switch, and I was unable to turn the car off. The car was stopped and in park. I had to bring the car to the dealer and they told me that my only option to fix the problem was to replace the ignition component.

Ignition key will not turn car off. Only way to shut it off with force applied to the key. . . Went to dealer thought it was the key , but other key did same thing. Ignition switch may be faulty.
Faulty ignition switch. Locks on the "on" or "off" position. When the vehicle is stationary it is hard to turn it on or off because it locks.
Purchased 2012 vw Jetta new at local vw dealership. Currently has approx 51,000 miles on it. At around 29,000 miles ignition switch would not shut off while I was shopping-took to dealershipi and was told it was fixed- had just stuck. Less than a month later same thing happened. Dealership had the car for weeks-(this time they did provide loaner car). Most recent- prior to ignition problem currently occurring I had to have wiper motor replaced at my cost $600. 00 plus dollars. I sat in waiting area of dealership that clearly stated we provide loaner car or shuttle service at time of your appt. Neither available on that day. I addressed this issue with service manager who was off that day. Received apologetic e-mail. Have had to replace headlight bulb and needs replaced again. Could this be an electrical issue? is this car even safe to drive my grandchildren in? I am not feelin comfortable with it. Presently as I am writing this my car has been running for 18 hours. Ignition stuck Friday eve- service dept not open on sat. When I called Friday eve basically I was told "get it over here somehow and we will take a look". Presently weighing my options-needless to say I am extremely disappointed with the purchase of my first new vw. Previously had owned two used vw golf. Note: first time I was fortunately close to vw garage which is a 40 minute drive from my house-fortunate again this time that it's sitting in my driveway running until I can figure out a plan. Loved my vw-past tense. After going online I see other people have had this very experience with ignition. Seems it is going to be expensive. Very disappointed! my dealership is vw clarksburg, wv. Former star motor-1-304-623-7827. Shane leblond - "service manager".
Key binds in ignition when turning vehicle off. This had been an ongoing issue. Key needs to be jiggled to turn ignition switch back to get key out. At times it takes a few seconds to remove key, which is not good in case car needs to be turned off and exited quickly.
The ignition switch is becoming increasingly difficult to turn off and remove the key from. I've done my research and have found a community of other vw owners experiencing similar issues with the vw models (many Jettas like mine). The vehicle is safely parked, etc, and the key must be turned so hard that it feels like one could break/damage the key in the ignition switch before it releases.
When I try to turn off my car the key gets stuck in the ignition switch. This has been happening for months. As many people that ice seen with this issue this needs to be a recall or buy baking the vehicles.
Ignition key will not rotate in ignition switch to turn engine off. This is a common defective design condition in the non-keyless models. One trick learned on internet is to tap end of key with screwdriver handle while lightly turning in off direction. Safety concern is inability to turn car engine off in emergency, electrical fault/fire or for police safety.
Ignition switch will not release the key can not turn off engine( three times the weekend of 6 11 2016).

The contact owns a 2012 Volkswagen Jetta. The contact's key became stuck in the ignition switch while in the run position. The dealer was able to shut off the engine only by disconnecting four of the five fuel injectors. The dealer stated that they would need to destroy the trim and remove and replace the ignition lock and switch assembly. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 72,000.
The contact owns a 2013 Volkswagen Jetta. The contact stated after numerous attempts, the ignition switch was able to release. The failure recurred twice. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic where the ignition switch cylinder was cleaned and lubricated. The vehicle was repaired. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 39,500.
The ignition switch wont allow the key to, turn to turn the vehicle off.
While pulling into intersection, ignition quit. Tow truck driver restarted vehicle. Dealer found fault with electronic ignition. Replaced ignition switch.
While driving on freeway car completely shut-off. Coasted to off-ramp, stopped car and then re-started it. Dealer later diagnosed ignition switch problem (intermittent ignition switch faults logged) and recommended replacement of the ignition switch.

The car's own keys could not be inserted into the ignition. The dust cap inside the ignition cylinder/ switch was blocking the key from entering. The steering wheel was locked because of the ignition key not able to enter the ignition switch. Also the transmission could not be moved from parking because of the above reason. As a result, we were all stranded on the road for several hours because the car keys could not be inserted to the ignition. Had to tow the car to vw dealership and the dealers wanted to change the entire ignition switch. Later found out that it can happen to any vw Jetta because of the way the cylinder has been designed by vw and vwoa does not want to make any recall and change this design. Please note that the car is only 4 years old, used only by me very gently, and the ignition switch design is faulty.
I have a 2004 vw Jetta. It has about 48,000 miles on it. A little over a year ago, it developed an electrical problem. It progresses from the dashboard lights flickering initially & the trip mileage going away, to beeping 3 times, and eventually to stalling when I stop. It’s progressive, the longer it happens the more frequently it happens. This makes the car unreliable and dangerous. I’ve taken the car to the dealership 4 times. The first 2 times, they said it was a short. I was charged for the service. The next time they said it was the ignition switch. I paid for the part but not the labor. The last time, they said it was the fuel pump relay switch. I wasn’t charged. I got the car back Thursday. The problem reoccurred Saturday. I spoke to vw corp. Prior to the third & fourth times I took it to the dealer. The fourth time, I asked for other options, but all they would do is tell me to take it in for repairs. I spoke to them again today. They said to take it in to the dealer once more. I pointed out that I had just done that last week. They still insisted I return it to the dealer. They said eventually, they might give me credit for the car towards a new car. They wouldn’t specify how many more times i’ll have to take it in to be considered for the credit. They didn’t say how much credit they would offer. I don’t want another vw. I asked that, as the car was unreliable & they couldn’t fix it, that they buy it back from me at the blue book price. They said that would never happen. Do you have reports of similar problems with 2004 vw Jettas?
do you have any suggestions as to what my rights are relative to this situation?.

Upon starting the vehicle a shear bolt associated with the ignition switch broke without vehicle being involved in a collision. If this occurred while driving vehicle would stop running.

The ignition switch in my car is getting worse. The first time it malfunctioned was on a cold and snowy night. I was driving along and all of a sudden the lights went out, the wipers stopped, the defroster fan stopped and the abs light went on. It was a little unsettling. The vw dealer told me it was a bad ingnition switch and it would cost about $300. Oo dollars to replace. When I asked the parts department if they had the switch in stock he laughed and said "OH yeah". I am now driving my car only in the daytime while I save the money to replace the switch. I have owned over 30 cars and have never had an ignition fail.
Windshield wipers and head lights were working intermittently. Consumer took vehicle to dealer for check up, and results showed that the ignition switch needed to be replaced.

Ignition switch. I have a faulty ignition switch. With the car running, there have been occasions when my headlights have turned off, and the brake light came on. I have seen approximately 5 postings on different message boards with the same problem.
Th ignition lock cylinder has broken and been replaced on my 1997 Jetta twice.

My 1998 Volkswagen (vw) Jetta has an ignition switch problem. When driving, it falls back, turning off the electrical system (including lights and windshield wipers). Vw has identified this as a problem in the 1996 and 1997 Jettas (and sent out a recall on the part) but does not recognize it as a problem for the 1998 models. I have been told by a vw service person that the 1998 models use the same ignition switch as the 1996/1997's. Vw representatives claim that they do not see a problem with the 1998's. This is a dangerous problem and should be addressed by vw.
The vehicles ignition switch failed and caused the headlight to shut off while driving on a dark country road. The dealer was notified.
