I live in florida where it is very hot - one day my car doesn't turn on and I get the notice on my dashboard that says "starter system faulty. Service vehicle". It wont turn on again. I searched the NHTSA website and it seems there is an open recall already, however for some reason my 2019 Jetta is not included, and the dealership refuses to claim it under recall. Nhtsa campaign number: 23v604000 I am submitting this complaint to include this batch of 2019 Jettas also affected.
Vehicle shuts down while driving. All electrical turns off, dashboard goes dark code reads starter system faulty, ignition switched off, please service vehicle.
My vw Jetta 2019 car just stopped twice with “check starter system” error and failed to turn on right in the middle of the road which might have lead to some serious accident. Once on a light the steering and brakes both got locked and all the electrics (dash, radio etc) shut off and so had to somehow safely get on the side of the road and had to use the handbrake abruptly to stop the car which was a difficult situation. Tried turning on the engine again but it kept on giving me “check ignition” switch and “starter system” errors and all the electrical parts turned off including the engine. It could have been a fatal accident and calls for serious service negligence on vw part. I see so many complaints in different forums for the same ignition switch and electrical failure on 2019 vw Jetta models but never a recall from vw to fix the issue. That’s a big lapse in safety issue and Volkswagen should be sued for neglecting such life threatening damages which might lead to severe consequences like a fatal accident if car stops with no proper warning beforehand.
The car will just shut down. If the car is parked in the sun it will just randomly not start. Since the tempatures outside have gotten warmer it has now done 3 times: the car will start fine as I am driving the electrical panels and everything shuts off but the gas still works and the car says check starter system. My 16 year olds drive this car. The instrument panels all turn off. The car has also shut off the engine while in motion this is very dangerous. The check engine light doesnt show and because it is random my mechanic cannot find the main problem and parts related to this are sold out with vw due to if you look everyone is having this issue. Someone is going to die please. My car has service records just 50,000 miles and its been an on going issue for awhile. We cant trade it in for financial reasons but have to drive it. My husband and I have our kids driving our Hyundai and we drive this Jetta cause I would rather it shut down in the middle of an intersection with he or I driving than them. Please this Jetta will kill the drivers, passengers and whoever crashes into it when it keep shutting off. It has been at the shop for a week at a time at times trying to fix this.
The original vw battery leaked and corroded rthe cables shorting out the car requiring a tow. It would not take a jump and after taking it to a vw dealership, the battery, cables and starter had to be replaced. The vehicle was stationary when this happened. This also happened to my previous vw.

The contact owns a 2007 Volkswagen Jetta. The contact stated that the vehicle failed to start without warning. In addition, the vehicle shook and previously made abnormal noises. The vehicle was not able to restart. The vehicle was towed to the local dealer (timmons Volkswagen of long beach, 3940 cherry Ave, long beach, CA, 90807) where it was diagnosed that the starter failed, the brake booster vacuum was leaking oil, the driver and passenger outer cv boots were torn/worn, and the sway bar link was fractured. All the parts needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired due to the cost. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and did not assist. The failure mileage was 50,200.

My vw Jetta has had issues losing electronic power steering on and off, typically when it rains or the roads have been salted and it is slushy or snowing. This last week I was driving and I lost traction control, cruise control, tachometer, abs brakes and oil pressure. The car would not idle. Researching the issue, I found there may be an issue with the wiring harness. I inspected the harness and discovered that several wires have been chafed by the plastic loom and worn through the insulation, exposing the wires. I also discovered that the positive cable to the starter had chafed and worn through the ground wire insulation creating a potential hazard to short the battery.

The vehicle failed to start so it was jumpstarted with no problems then taken to get the battery tested. The battery, alternator, and starter all tested ok. Then warning lights indicating that the right headlamp and right rear taillamp illuminated then went out. Vehicle was driven to the dealer and they determined that a part of the fuse box had melted. Upon further inspection a 30amp fuse for the brake lights had melted into the fuse panel, but had not popped the fuse.

Headlights dimming- to point where you can not tell they are on. Engine light comes on despite all diagnostics stating all is ok with car. Periodically fails to start-despite diagnostics that state starter, battery, drain altenator all good and functioning properly. Car jumps easily with "boost".

As I was driving 65mph on the highway my car completely shut down. I had no lights, no gas, no anything. I was able to pull off to the side of the road. After about 20 minutes, the car started back up, but I only made it about 1. 5 miles before it did it again. Vw dealership replaced my entire computer module (j519) and then let me leave the lot. I continued to have trouble starting the car. The dealership replaced the relay for the starter because it was overheating. I am now (oct 2012) having issues with the unlocking of my driver side door.
Drove the vehicle home from work Friday 1/13, weather was below freezing causing ice build up. Parked the vehicle in my garage ~45 degrees. Ice began melt, and when trying to start the vehicle Saturday afternoon it turned 1/4 turn and the engine stopped. My assumption is that the engine inhaled water causing a hydro-lock, I continued to try to start the vehicle a total 5 times (it turned over once and ran extremely rough and died once). The last time trying to start the vehicle I smelled smoke, I popped the hood to find the starter and wiring on fire. I was able to extinguish the fire relatively quickly, considering the vehicle was parked in my garage attached to my house this could have extremely catastrophic if I wouldn't have been able to get the fire out. *** this is the second time for the hard / no start problem, this one however resulted in the fire. Volkswagen will not follow the below TSB since the vehicle started after wiring and starter replacement. Issue mirrors TSB # 21 11 06 / 2025464, which includes engine will not turn over, "dead battery" starter action (due to hydraulic resistance in cylinder), and starter/electrical fires (due to starter overheating during attempts to start locked engine).

Issues began with faulty starter. Then progressed to a battery of electrical issues from windows moving in reverse of desired order to horn and keys dying. Each time dealer brushed off issue. When horn and keys died (also with faulty start button) dealer tried to force me to drive unsafe vehicle until they got around to fixing the problem. Most other times the issue was ignored or I was treated as though I was making up the problem. (these problems include radio staying on when car is completely off, and after manually switching it off, it then will turn back on while the car is still off (even though the car will not start and I have to use the long hold lock function to roll windows up). The car also will reopen trunk upon close, flash passenger seat belt warnings when the seat is empty, not display gear when moving, not display mileage/fuel level while simultaneously listing mileage range from selected screen, etc. Problems are worse in extreme weather. I have attempted to have the problems fixed multiple times to no avail. Recently, I have taken the car in several times to have service light diagnosed. Dealer reset light each time without bothering to check the source. Problem progressed to engine not starting, sluggish and jerky acceleration, lurching stops, and, most recently, shutting off while driving. This is absolutely a manufacturer issue, and I am planning to pursue all options available to rectify. Not only has Volkswagen produced an unsafe vehicle, but they are also aware of these problems and make a great effort to avoid dealing with them.

No events lead to this problem. The original battery in the vehicle was changed out due its age. Over the past 4 months I have changed out the battery twice. On more than at least 20 different times, I would go to my vehicle in the morning to start it up and the battery would be completely dead. No lights, radio or any other devices were left on in the vehicle, to drain the entire battery to nothing within the span of 10-12 hours. I have taken it the auto shop on several occasions to have a voltage test done on the battery, alternator and starter with negative results every time for a parasitic drain of the battery. The alternator is in perfect working order and does not need replacing. So far the has been nothing that can be done other than jump start the vehicle. During the 10 or so hours I am work and leave for the day, I have had absolutely no issues. If the vehicle is not driven over the weekend, come Monday morning it is dead. I have just recently changed out the battery and there is absolutely nothing wrong with it but yet its dead if left for more than 12 hours.

There was some noise coming from the engine, then the direction lights did not work, nor did the interior fan work. Then I noticed smoke coming up from under the hood (engine hood). I pulled over and stop the car and turned off the engine. Smoke continued to come out from the engine compartment. It was an electrical fire. The smell was awful. There were no flames to be seen. When I opened the hood there was lots of smoke. The dealership informed me today that the ignition got stuck in the on mode and this burnt out the starter. The fire was from the starter being in the on mode and burning itself out. The dealership has ordered the parts and will replace them. The car is still under warranty.
On 30 October 2006, I had to have my 2002 Volkswagen that was purchased brand new towed into the dealership. My car wouldn't start. Thought it was the battery, replaced the battery and it still wouldn't start. I had to have the power wire to the starter replaced. I'm being told by the dealership that it is very uncommon for this wire to be replaced. I just would like to know from Volkswagen have they received in other complaints. I think this is something of a manufacture defect.
We were driving our new 2005. 5 Jetta 5 spd at an intersection the vehicle stalled as a result of the clutch being let out to quickly. I tried to start the vehicle immediately without success. I pulled the brake up; pushed the clutch pedal completely in and put the stick shift into neutral. Still was unable to start the vehicle. An eighteen wheeler just missed us by inches. Finally got the car started made our way home. At home we duplicates what happened and determined we needed to turn the key completely to the off position, then we were able to successfully restart the engine. We drive mostly manual transmissions and cannot think of any time we have had to turn the key completely to the off position to get our vehicles started. We called and talked with the service department and were told that this was a new feature vw instituted this year to keep drivers from trying to restart an engine that may already be running and possibly ruining the starter. Ruining the starter was the least of our problems. We are concerned the documentation that outlines that the driver must return the key to the 0ff position every time to restarted the engine is buried on pg 92 of booklet 3. 1 in section ignition lock position of the key. This is clearly not something a driver would normally look for or expect from the vehicle they are driving. I would like to recommend this feature be changed so that if a driver stalls their vehicle, especially in a compromising situation, they would be able to restart the vehicle with the key being anywhere in the on position. In addition, until this could be accomplished I would recommend this information be included in the Jetta quick reference guide. This is a more reasonable place the driver may look instead of being buried deep inside the drivers manual. I also recommend this be information the dealership is required to make sure the driver knows before leaving their lot. This is definitely something of a possible safety issue.

Upon starting vehicle the consumer noticed that the engine ran for a few seconds then stalled. The consumer was told that nothing was wrong with the vehicle. The problem was ongoing. A "too rich code," and the purge valve was replaced. The repair attempts for the vacuum leaks, oxygen sensors, the rich running of the engine, mass air flow sensor and connector. The consumer was informed that the part was out of stock. There was a vacuum leak and the intake boot had come off, the door hinges were loose, and noise had come from the starter motor due to an internal short.

On several different occasions now my 1997 Volkswagen Jetta gl has failed to start. Because this has happened at night and almost always away from home this has been a potentially dangerous situation. There is never any warning that this is going to happen. The car may be working fine and then the next time it is time to start it, it simply won't start. We have had to have the car towed several times now. Once out of a parking garage -at 5:00 pm during rush hour. Once I was by myselfon a Sunday in a town I was not familiar with at a not very nice gas station getting gas when the car failed to start. I was there several hours before I could get in contact with family members to come and rescue me. Each time we have taken the car to a Volkswagen dearlership and had it "fixed". My question is how many times do we have to have it fixed????
I have gone on various sites and the comment is that the 1997 Jetta has starting problems. If this is so then doesn't this mean that the starter or the wiring is defective. Granted the car probably won't blow up because of this but a car should be reliable enough just to start - shouldn't it? we have had the car four years now and have had repeated failures. Sometimes it would start eventually but we have had 3 different occasions when it would not start and it went in for repairs. Twice ( two different dealerships) we were told it was a bad starter and it was supposedly replaced. The combined cost - $1100. 00. The third time we protested and demanded that it be fixed - that time - $150. 00. Now we are up against a fourth trip to a dealership. I am 56 years old and have had many different cars - old & new, but never have I had an experience like this!!! and I know I am not the only one!.

We bought the 1997 Jetta used in 2000. Since then it had it's ignition changed (new key to start engine). The third starter was just put in. We thought the new starter would fix the problem of the engine not turning over, but it's back again less than 21 days after the starter was put. It's in the shop , starter was checked; it's not the starter.
Multiple problems: main complaint 1. Failure of window regulator, driver and passenger side - several times on each side 2. The car is a 1999 and I have replaced the battery twice once in 2000 (blew up) and once recently (8/2003) and now starter motor and alternator are failing. Sometimes the gas gauge works and sometimes it doesn't, sometimes the key lock/alarm works sometimes it doesn't and horn works intermittently - all problems since 2000. The car is known to lock/unlock itself. The fender liner and front grills fell off in 2000. The sunroof cover and the sunroof have both failed once. The gas tank cover failed twice. The front clutch dropped off the engine while driving at 24500 miles and the dealership did not work with me on expenses ($600 to fix). The vw symbol on all 4 tires have fallen off (only in place with adhesive).
Malfuctioned iginition switch is causing starter to engage when applying clutch. Feel free to provide any further information.
Problems with ignition switch and tire equipment. The dealer replaced the ignition switch and starter assembly. On another occasion, while the consumer was driving, the rear tire fell off the vehicle, themechanic informed the consumer it was due to ball bearing seizing which caused a tremendous amount of heat.
Starter failed in oct, 99. New part replaced by dealer. Starter failed again may, 2000. New part is needed again.
