Volkswagen Jetta owners have reported 8 problems related to trunk lid (under the structure category). The most recently reported issues are listed below. Also please check out the statistics and reliability analysis of Volkswagen Jetta based on all problems reported for the Jetta.
Upon accessing the trunk, I have been struck on the back of the head numerous times because the trunk lid does not stay up upon opening. I have heard that this design flaw was corrected after a certain manufacturer date, but I reported it to my dealer who did nothing about it and said that nothing could be done about it.

Trunk lid does not stay open all the way unless it is pushed and locked into place. Could knock someone out if you forget to do this. Never seen a design like this. Vw should address and fix this hazard.
I am the owner of a 2006 vw Jetta tdi sedan. I purchased the vehicle used in a private sale in 2009. By 2011 I was having numerous problems with the vehicle. The dual mass flywheel failed just after I had my car at the dealership for the timing belt service (approximate mileage 106,000). I had to have it towed (at my expense) to the dealership since it wasn't safe to drive the 130 miles. Dealership said it was a known problem but Volkswagen of America has not offered any assistance. Apparently someone has to die to get their attention. Approximate cost of repairs: $1,800. 2nd big problem is electrical. Wiring harness in the driver door failed soon after I purchased it. It started with the driver window switch not working. Then the lock/unlock button quit working. Then the interior/exterior safety lights. I have heard that it will progress to the trunk lid, the other windows, the fuel door, ect. Once again an extremely common problem due to a poor design. Once again Volkswagen of America has refused to offer assistance - the dealership quoted me just under $500 in parts and labor. Why would a harness cost $205!!! third problem is cosmetic issues. The paint is flaking off especially near the seams and at the wheel wheels. Rust formed where the paint bubbled up at two of the four wheel wheels. There is a service bulletin for paint problems in the generation before this vehicle and a 10-12 year corrosion warranty that vw refuses to honor. Additionally, problems with poor manufacturing practices and materials abound in this vehicle. The headliner pulls away from the pillars at the seams in the rear due to defective materials. It will separate from the roof and become a hanging visibility hazard. The plastic dash pieces don't fit together - shrinking and pulling away at the seams. Stereo buttons (as well as door switches) bubble and flake off.

The trunk of my 2006 Volkswagen Jetta turbo will randomly open while driving and/or parked. This has happened while I have been driving on several occasion blocking the visibility from my rear view mirror. The trunk will also close, however, the car/dashboard recognizes the trunk as being open; disabling the ability to opening the trunk with the keyless entry and within the car. I notice this issue usually occurs more frequently when the weather is colder.
The right rear hinge on the trunk of my 2004 Jetta cracked on a joint. This caused the trunk to close in an imbalanced way. I recently closed my trunk and the leading edge of the trunk lid made contact with the back light (rear windshield) glass and shattered the glass completely. The glass fell into the car creating a very hazardous situation. When I contacted my local vw dealer to inquire about getting the hinge fixed, they explained that this is a common problem on vw Jetta and passats and they have had numerous similar failures. I also contacted my insurance company (geico) and they told me the same thing, that they had an unusual number of claims from vw owners of shattered back lights (rear windshield) after the trunk lid was closed by the owner. If my kids were sitting in the rear seat, they would have been shattered with glass. Because my car has over 50,000 miles I am out of warranty. I called vw customer service and was basically given the run around. I said this is a safety issue and not a mileage based issue and they should fix my car, but they have refused.

I purchased a 2000 vplkswagen Jetta in the year 2002, pre-owned. I have had nothing but problems with it since I bought it, and now am trading it in, and taking a $3000 loss. Here is a list of the problems I have had in the last 2 years listed from first problems to most recent:
1. Window tray broke, window fell into the door. $300
2. Trunk latch broke, had to get replaced $50
3. Sunroof broke, would not move and needed the entire thing replaced including the motor. $1800
4. Water pump leaked out all coolant, needed to be replaced $ 600
5. Strut coil snaped in half while driving, needed to replace both sides $500
6. Lastly, (this is the point when I decided to file a complaint and trade the car in for another brand) water leaking from the electrical panel on top of inside roof. Sunroof then malfunctioned, opening when the car was started and the knob was not touched. Had to pay to disconnect power sunroof. Whatever you do, please, do not buy a vw Jetta. That is unless you want to have it continually in the shop and having to spend a lot of money on repairs.
