2 Structure problem of the 2013 Volkswagen Jetta

Failure Date: 12/14/2012

A couple of weeks after buying this new vehicle I noticed that hundreds of foggy looking spots would appear in the rear windshield at certain times of the day. When these spots appear it is almost impossible to see out of this windshield or into it . This usually happens around dawn and around dusk though it has happened at other times of the day also. I have pursued having this problem resolved by contacting the dealer several times only to be told it is because of the window being polarized and that the window is up to manufacturer specifications. Pretty much they have told me, too bad that's the way it is. I have expressed to the dealer and to Volkswagen of America that this is a safety issue due to the fact that you can not see out of or in through the windshield when these foggy spots are there. After months of trying to get them to at least acknowledge there is a problem they finally sent an executive down to look at the problem. Their last time I heard from them, they said they would tint the rear windshield so that I wouldn't see the problem. To me this does not make any sense. If you try to cover up the problem you do not solve the problem. I feel that they are trying to cover up a manufacturing problem and ignoring safety issues. I don't know who to talk to or where to go from here with this problem. It seems as though I am getting nowhere with them. I am reading about others with the same problems in vw forums on the internet and am sure there must be other complaints about this problem and am wondering if others have sent complaints into this department also. Any help would be appreciated.

3 Structure problem of the 2009 Volkswagen Jetta

Failure Date: 10/01/2012

The contact owns a 2009 Volkswagen Jetta. The contact stated that the steering wheel cover slip in the air bag horn area was defective and the contact was concerned that the air bag would erroneously deploy. The vehicle was taken to the dealer for inspection. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 50,000 and the current mileage was 71,000. Updated 08/27/lj the steering air bag cover also served as the horn contact area I. E. The consumer had to press the air bag cover to activate the horn. The steering wheel air bag cover was splitting in multiple areas due to horn usage I. E pressing on the cover to activate the horn. The steering wheel air bag cover should withstand a lifetime of use without failure. The manufacturer was made aware of the issue, but they refused to replace the steering wheel airbag which included the cover. Updated 08/29/13.

5 Structure problem of the 2010 Volkswagen Jetta

Failure Date: 08/31/2012

The seal between the connectors and the drain hose for the sunroof drains leak (three of four connectors), allowing water to run down the both driver and passenger side a-pillars. This resulted in the airbag and its associated mounts/wiring and harness getting soaked. The water continued down the a pillars to collect in the front wheel wells. The path of the water was over/through the drivers side interior junction/fuze block. The rear drains also leak, causing intermittent electrical malfunctions. Note that this leak is not due to the drains being blocked. Rather the seals between the white plastic that connects to the drain and the brown drain hose is not complete. This allows water to drip down onto the frame. As much as 2-3 gallons of water could enter during a mild rain storm.

6 Structure problem of the 2006 Volkswagen Jetta

Failure Date: 08/12/2012

The headliner is pulling away from the rear pillars. Being the primary driver of the vehicle I do not spend time in the back seat. My daughter is currently learning to drive so on a recent errand I was sitting in the back seat and looked up to see the headliner completely pulling away and coming down from the roof of the car and dome light. When I got back home, I did some internet research and found a multitude of websites, forums, etc. With people experiencing the same issue. . Read more...

7 Structure problem of the 2004 Volkswagen Jetta

Failure Date: 09/21/2011

Last year I was driving home from school one night it was cold out so I turned on my heated seat. My seat started to get very hot in an isolated area so I turned it remembering the recall I received in the mail. The recall stated that the heating element in the seat could be faulty and the seat could catch fire. I called my dealership and they expressed to me that the recall was expired! what how could some thing that could cause injury have an expiration date? well after that I no longer used the seat but one day my son who wanted the car to be warm for his mother started it and turned on both heated seats by the time I went out to the car it was filled with smoke and a hole burned through my seat. Another issue I have is I got a recall on my sun roof saying it causes the drivers side back and front floor to flood. When it did I took it in to my dealer they "fixed it", well last week it poured terrible the next day I went out to my vehicle to find 4 inches of water on the floor of my drivers side back seat. Today 09/18/2012 I took it in to my dealer to be repaired and they wanted to charge me $100 for diagnostic fee. This is outrageous I have a child and to have water sit in between the metal of the car floor and the carpet I am disgusted!!! it smells so bad I had to sprinkle baking soda on the floor to keep the smell at bay. The water is still squishing between the carpet and the metal and it is supposed to storm again today!!! I am completely fed up with Volkswagen!.

8 Structure problem of the 2001 Volkswagen Jetta

Failure Date: 09/07/2011

Debris from gaskets in air ventilation system exits the air vents and hits the occupants. The debris, on occasion, hit the driver in the eye causing temporary loss of vision. The debris flying out into the face of the driver or other vehicle occupant is always a distraction to driver attention to driving even when direct contact with the eye(s) does not occur.

9 Structure problem of the 2011 Volkswagen Jetta

Failure Date: 02/01/2011

The contact owns a 2011 Volkswagen Jetta. The contact was driving approximately 55 mph when suddenly, there was a loud wind sound inside the vehicle as if the exterior wind was blowing in through the front driver and passenger doors. The windows in the vehicle were closed. The vehicle was taken to the dealer where the technician stated that the air was entering through the side view mirrors. The dealer was unable to make any repairs because the failure was considered a design flaw. The approximate failure mileage was 2,900. The VIN was unavailable. Updated 5/9/11.

10 Structure problem of the 2006 Volkswagen Jetta

Failure Date: 08/05/2010

Fabric headliner on interior roof of 2006 vw Jetta is separating, sagging down so that I cannot see out of rearview mirror. Apparently this is common defect w/the car- the glue separates after only a few years.

11 Structure problem of the 2006 Volkswagen Jetta

Failure Date: 05/13/2010

Bought new vw Jetta sedan on 08/17/06. On 05/13/10 took the car to the dealer because of car decelerating while driving I. E. Dropping in seconds from 60 miles to 20 miles. It was taken to the dealer multiple times for the same problem. Dealer answer "unable to replicate problem" until warranty of four years expired. The problem continues even after the carbon accumulated on the throttle was cleaned and the fuel pump was replaced. Due to unsafe to drive, requested for the dealer to buy the car back as a lemon. The dealer refuses because the four yr warranty is over. Other problems experienced with this vehicle during this period: air bags lights going off, air bag cover falling off, trunk opening on its own while driving, rain water leaking inside the lining of the car, screws coming off a door panel, doors falling off the hinges, emergency switch falling inside panel, fuel cap not locking, recalls. Dealer recommending to replace the steering wheel column for 2,340.

12 Structure problem of the 2010 Volkswagen Jetta

Failure Date: 05/01/2010

The contact owns a 2010 Volkswagen Jetta. During moderate to heavy rainy weather conditions large amounts of water flowed onto the windshield due to the design of the roof. The design of the windshield wipers also forced large amounts of water into the viewing range of the driver. The manufacturer was notified and informed him that the vehicle was operating as designed. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was unknown and the current mileage was 1,754. Updated 10/26/10. Updated 10/26/jb.

13 Structure problem of the 2003 Volkswagen Jetta

Failure Date: 01/01/2010

I own a 2003 vw Jetta tdi. Six months ago the clear coat started peeling from the hood and now it is peeling everywhere. I spoke to vw customer care and they said out of warranty, too bad. Less then 7 years old. At least gm paint jobs don't fall off the minute the warranty runs out. The only good thing is I drive it around with a sign stating, "don't laugh, your vw will look like this soon".

14 Structure problem of the 2008 Volkswagen Jetta

Failure Date: 09/14/2009

Toxic mold: thank you for this message. For the record, we did not request financial relief for the mold problem with our 2008 leased Volkswagen (vw) Jetta. We requested receipt of a new, mold-free vehicle for the completion of our lease. This request was made because of the recurrent mold problem that resulted from a manufacturer's defective gasket seal on the car's trunk. We also must iterate that the mold is a serious toxic health hazard for which we will hold volkwagen responsible if health, I. E. , breathing or other mold related problems result from this hazardous condition for which vw refuses to take responsibility by either fully abating the mold in this vehicle or replacing the vehicle with a healthy, I. E. , mold-free, vehicle. It is our desire to receive full-service from the vehicle that I am currently leasing, however, if it is determined by certified mold inspectors, that this vehicle is unsafe due to a toxic mold infestation, we will pursue this matter to the full-extent of the laws of the state of florida, and those of the u. S. Federal government. Volkswagen's callous determination that the health of the drivers and passengers of this leased vw vehicle are not worthy of the concern and resolution of this problem, is an unfortunate situation that must be made known to all vw owners/drivers/passengers, and particularly to the government agencies that regulate the automobile industry, and the consumer health agencies of the state of florida an the united states. To all those in receipt of this message, please pass this along to all people you know who drive cars, ride in cars, or who are in the market to purchase or lease a car. Thank you for your consideration of the health and safety of all vehicle owners, particularly those who own or lease Volkswagen vehicles. For additional information about this please contact me by response to this e-mail.

17 Structure problem of the 2004 Volkswagen Jetta

Failure Date: 02/01/2009

Car is flooded after a rain; had sunroof drains cleaned by mechanic @ $245; did not solve the problem; rugs smell of mildew causing respiratory distress. The last considerable rain storm we had produced measurable water buildup. Had to use wet vac.

18 Structure problem of the 2001 Volkswagen Jetta

Failure Date: 08/06/2008

I own a 2001 vw Jetta. I bought it 3 years ago, used from the Volkswagen dealership. The automobile was sold as a "certified" auto, which I found out later does not mean much. My trunk is locked shut and does not open manually or with remote, I've had to replace cv boots, catalytic converter, transmission and numerous headlight, taillight and blinker bulbs. And today one of my headlights is so dim, it doesn't really provide any light when it is dark. I have replaced it and replaced it. It stays fine for about 2 days and then just dims out again. I can't afford to keep taking it to Volkswagen. It's a rip off and they don't even fix anything right anyway. My engine fan went out all of the sudden the other day, causing the car to overheat. I had to get it towed. That isn't the first time I have had to pay to have it towed. The interior plastic coating on armrests and all plastic inside is peeling and looks terrible. When I push unlock all doors, the driver's side back seat door will not open unless I reach inside and pull the lock open manually. There is so much more, but I don't want to waste my time. I know nothing will happen, even though it is so obvious that these cars are complete lemons, and they need to stop selling them to people.

19 Structure problem of the 2002 Volkswagen Jetta

Failure Date: 08/15/2007

Volkswagens use of cheap plastics on the oil stick of my 2002 Volkswagen Jetta caused plastic from the oil stick to fall into my motor and cause motor damage including an oil leak and eurasian auto service in panama city already has a vw product that is broken down in their shop, and even Volkswagens own service manager in panama city, mike boatwright, told vw they should authorize him to make the repairs but they refused, the ostensibly lowest bid plastics used for the 2002 vw's also caused mike boatwright to ask that vw replace my headlight lenses as they are creating a traffic hazard, and not only is this nationwide, but mallory horne of the florida dmv who referred me to you wrote to me that " your complaint has not fallen on deaf ears, I just got rid of my Volkswagen Jetta for the same headlight problem" and I will be happy to mail you a copy in support of my complaint, also walmart's service manager in callaway florida is the person who found that my car is now leaking oil due to Volkswagen failing to repair the motor and he says that he saw the same Volkswagen problem in new england at his previous job (scott). Also the cheap plastics used on my car that caused these safety traffic violations, were used on the glove box lock which is broken and the radio aerial which is broken. The first 2002 vw I was given broke down in traffic in the dark and was exchanged the following day. So there are more than enough witnesses that the 2002 Volkswagen Jettas should be recalled, me, jerry p carroll, mike boatwright, reggie at eurasian, mallory horne, and scott at walmart, in addition there are many students at my college with the same problem who are in hope that you will help them also. Breaking down in traffic with limited headlights is a national safety crisis, as far as deaths and injuries, entering zero only means that vw has managed so far to conceal any.

20 Structure problem of the 2002 Volkswagen Jetta

Failure Date: 07/15/2007

2002 Jetta roof leaks water when heavy rain. Research shows that may people are having the same issue.

21 Structure problem of the 2001 Volkswagen Jetta

Failure Date: 01/28/2007

I have a 2001 Jetta and is has a crayon smell in it. It gets worst in the heat. I have complained to the corporate office and nothing has been done. There are numerous complaints of the same complaint on the internet however it continues to be ignored. It is to the point where I get a headache when I'm in the car. I read one complaint said it was a type of plastic wax Jetta uses in the vehicle and that product is toxic. I have exhausted all options and don't know what else I can do to get them to do a recall on this matter due to the number of complaints.

22 Structure problem of the 1999 Volkswagen Jetta

Failure Date: 01/16/2007

This is a follow-on of my NHTSA complaint #10175337, because today, I experienced a third water ingestion into my son's 1999 vw Jetta, and vw of America said, basically, "sorry, we cannot cover this water damage any more than we could cover the second water damage you had on 27 Nov 06 -- unlike the water damage we covered for you on the 13 oct 05 damage!" with hundreds of blogs complaining of water leakage into the Jetta's -- including thru 2006 models and ackowledgement by the dealer that this is a common occurrence! -- nobody with any smarts should consider buying one of these cars that the manufacturer declines to admit there is a design flaw or from a dealer who refuses to sign a pledge that if any future leak occurs it will be covered at their expense! as an aside, not a single homeowner in my 80-home subdivision had 1-drop of water entry during rains that entered my son's car! I returned the car to the dealership today because of water ingestion for a third time at the same point of entry it did on the second time for an out-of-pocket expense of over $1000. 00! I'm a die-hard vw owner, having owned one since high school in 1961, but my wife has just decried I or our son will never own another! a recall must be issued by vw at the behest of NHTSA, period!.

25 Structure problem of the 2001 Volkswagen Jetta

Failure Date: 07/06/2006

I bought my 2001 Volkswagen Jetta used in July 2006. Ever since, there has been a horrible smell of crayons infused throughout my car. I tried everything to get the smell out. However, this smell is becoming a daily burden for me to even drive the car for more than 5 minutes since I get headaches and really affects my allergies. I tried to research this smell and found many forums of people with the same problem saying that it is coming from a chemical in the carpet. I am confused as to why Volkswagen is not doing anything about this problem since it can be very serious. Chemicals seeping through the carpets and the driver breathing it in every time they drive is not a problem that a driver should be worrying about. A car is unsafe enough but to add toxins is unacceptable. I didn't pay for a car to get headaches and breath in chemicals when I drive it. Is there anything that can be done about this problem? thank you for listening to a problem that has really become a burden on my everyday life!.

26 Structure problem of the 2001 Volkswagen Jetta

28 Structure problem of the 2000 Volkswagen Jetta

Failure Date: 02/15/2006

I had recently bought this car from "skyline" dealer in colorado , I've owned it for,one year hit a speed bump and the engine fell forward(break-away engine) the engine had broke off the engine bolts(mounts) and the only thing to hold part of it up is the transmission arm. I have just now found someone to make the 8/15/06 repairs its a slow go,and still owe over 17,000 on it the insurance company wouldn't help they said that someone had weld the bolts back on incorrectly so this has happened before, I didn't notice, neither did the dealership for that matter in there many point inspection.

31 Structure problem of the 2005 Volkswagen Jetta

Failure Date: 08/25/2005

I purchased a certified pre-owned 2005 Volkswagen Jetta GLS tdi from randy hiley Volkswagen on August 25th 2005. I took the car into north point Volkswagen in sherwood, arkansas to have the fuel gauge checked out on September 2nd 2005. The service tech took me to the shop to look at the car. He asked me if I knew the car was damaged, I said no. The salesman had said it had never been wrecked and if it had been wrecked they would sell the car at wholesale. The service tech at north point showed me the fuel pump/fuel gauge-sending unit had been broken. He said the only time they have seen this happen is if a car had been in a wreck. They put the car on the lift and found that the car had been repaired on the driver's side. We found bad welds, and no paint/rust protectant. Hiley paid for the fuel pump to be replaced. If you look at the vw web site for certified pre-owned you'd see that it shows under the underbody tab "no sign of damage". I called hiley vw to see what they were going to do about this. To which they said, "there is nothing we can do. " (hiley, general manager). I have had hiley fix a seat belt problem and check four wheel alignment on the car. After I argued with general manager about all the problems with the car. I'm tired of arguing! which I had to drive to arlington. The air bag light in on now. I took the car into moffitt vw. They say it's a problem with the seat belt. There's a flaw in the windshield. There are no doorsill protectors on the driver's side of the car. The rear passenger seat will not lock into place. There may be more wrong with the car, I have stopped looking. I have submitted a consumer complaint form with the texas attorney general's office and the arkansas attorney general's office. I have also submitted a complaint form with the better business bureau. What does this mean "certified"? is it just a way to dump a not "up to snuff" car on an unsuspecting customer?.

33 Structure problem of the 2001 Volkswagen Jetta

2001 Jetta- makes winding noise at 40 mph, ear piercing, technicians claim this is normal but overpowers radio? unacceptable. Transmission shifts erratically all the time, car will lunge forward when at a stop when foot taken off brake pedal. Car makes a knocking noise when at a complete stop.

34 Structure problem of the 2000 Volkswagen Jetta

Failure Date: 10/19/2004

My car has 58,000 miles on it and like many others on this site it has suffered problem after problem with each one getting more serious. I have replaced a mass air flow sensor, glove box, turbo parts, and some plastic clips on the arm rest. But, when the air conditioner, fuel gauge started acting up, and the fact that this car has stalled on us three or more times recently (while out driving),then safety becomes an issue. The dealership could not fix the problem with the air conditioner coming and going or the stalling problem, as for the fuel gauge, we just fill up for every 280 miles put on the tripmeter.

35 Structure problem of the 1999 Volkswagen Jetta

Failure Date: 06/01/2004

When it rained the floor of the vehicle became wet. The owner took the vehicle to the dealer. They fixed it and told the owner there was no guarantee that the repair would resolve the problem. The vehicle was returned to the dealer because the floorboard continued to get wet when it rained. The dealer has not provided a permanent solution.
