There was a recall for the wheel housing on the passenger side rear protector shield. When they installed the hook it made noise and it fell off. When it fell off it started to squeak. He called the dealership, and took vehicle to dealer, and they put in another hook . The hook fell off again, and he called the dealership, but they would not help him. He took the vehicle to another mechanic, who told him the recall work was done wrongly. There should have been a hole drilled for the hook to latch onto. The letter stated it was a safety recall, wk14. Could not locate the NHTSA recall number. (11/08/05) tank guard on the rear passenger side.

While parked, panels located under engine and side protectant pieces, became unattached. Dealership tried to blame on driver- which isn't true, as the car was not driven in three days - all panels show fatigue, and some odd-cracking damage. Second repair shop show demonstrated weak screws, cracking along mouting points, and the bumper becoming unattached. Including damage to the screws themselves, with premature rusting, and the screw's heads completley falling off. While being towed to dealership, all panels became detached. (3 pc system) this is a certified-used vehicle - org. From IL sold in mn. Vehicle was in dealership that week for oil change, dealership reported no problems - however after the fact, the car was parked in a garage. Vw will not stand behind their product as they feel that it was not caused be the scews malfunctioning, but by "added and unknown stress increases.

The plastic inside front fender liner on both sides of my 2000 vw Jetta GLS tdi have come loose in the front and are rubbing against the front tires. I purchased this car less than 5 months ago, it was certified pre owned car from a vw dealer and was given a 110 point inspection. I have driven the car appx 10,000 miles since purchase without any accidents or incidents that may cause these items to come loose. When I brought the car to the dealer I was told that this is very common among these cars and is not a warranty item, furthermore, they advised me that this had to be driver induced damage, although they never inspected it. I called the vw customer care line and requested a factory service rep come and assess the problem only to be told when they called me back that the dealer told them that I had damaged the car, so they would not send a factory rep and the case has been closed. I believe this is a safety issue due to rubbing/interference with the front tires and needs to be addressed, especially considering the dealer told me that this is a common problem and they keep several replacement parts in stock due to frequency.
Problem with manual transmission not shifting into reverse; difficult to shift into and out of reverse and second gear, forcing you to double clutch to enable shifting. Ticking sound when in reverse. This resulted in chipped and pitted reverse idle gear and gear teeth missing. Also, shifter lever vibrating, becoming loose and eventually breaking off. Vehicle also recalled for a fire protective shield in the right rear wheel housing. Vehicle in shop for over a month due to litigation with penn warranty corp. Refusing to repair, stating damage was due to driver misuse.
While traveling in the left lane of the PA turnpike at a speed of 65 mph, the right side seat and curtain air bags deployed for no reason and without warning. I was safely able to pull over to the right lane and then off to the highway since the engine shuts down with air bag deployment. Upon having the vehicle inspected by a vw dealer no damage to the vehicle was found. I did not hit any pot hole or road debris. There is an obvious fault with the computer and/or sensor system in the vehicle. The vw dealer claims to have heard of no such occurence eventhough there appear to be many such occurences as listed on this webiste. Vw America claims there was an impact to the right rear axel which set off the airbag. Again there was no impact at the time of deployment. Traveling at that speed and in the environment I was there should have been more damage to my car than a scratch on the rear axel undercarriage.

Vehicle's transmission failed. The transmission had gone out when it was under warranty. It had taken three weeks to get the vehicle back at that time. The following year, the vehicle started to jerk. The vehicle was out of warranty. It wasn't until the vehicle stopped again, the consumer was told the transmission had leaked. There were numerous repairs. The vehicle was placed in the shop for the timing belt and the cylinder head. The vehicle also had to be taken in for a protective shield in the right rear wheel housing. The distributor cap, ignition rotor, and the spark plugs were replaced. Repair was also made to the wire for the ignition coil/cam shaft. The ignition switch was replaced and the engine control modules.
Continual problems with the rear end noise, heat shield loose and muffler center clamp loose, however after repairs noise persisted.
