1 Trunk Wiring problem of the 2002 Volkswagen Jetta

Failure Date: 08/08/2017

Known melting fuse box on top of battery. From schematics, appears s180 fuse (coolant fan) as predominant point of failure. Issue has been reported (via web) across numerous models and years. Called vw for fix; as techs appear void of a general consensus to problem/fix. Unfortunately, vw refuses to acknowledge and/or provide solution to customer(s). Refers me to dealer, which is over an hour away. Just need info to order repair kit and restore vehicle integrity/safety. Concerned as this may be a potential fire hazard; due to the volume of heat generated by wiring within internal compartment. In turn, I understand the age of the vehicle is outside the normal warranty period. As stated, just want an answer to repair; however, vw customer care rep commented I should reporting this issue in hopes to draw additional attention of other owners and, eventually, the NHTSA to get vw to respond to customers questions.

2 Trunk Wiring problem of the 2010 Volkswagen Jetta

Failure Date: 09/01/2015

The tail lights and brake lights were not working. Discovered during annual state required inspection in September 2015. I was driving the vehicle regularly on rural, city and highway roads without tail and brake lights and was unaware. A repair to the electrical wiring was required. Addtionally, the trunk latch was only working intermittently prior to this repair. Since the wiring repair was made, I have had no issues with the trunk release not working. The rear passenger door on the drivers side doesn't lock and unlock when you depress the keyfob or the button in the car to lock all the doors. This is a very infrequently used door and it is the door used the least in the vehicle. Dealer states it is a bad door latch. I have not repaired it. It doesn't always open from the outside, sometimes I have to reach in and open it from the inside to get the door open. On 01. 12. 2016 the car radio stopped working. The fuses are good and intact. The bluetooth no longer works since the radio doesn't work. It is completely out of service, nothing works on the radio. I relied heavily on the bluetooth for hands free phone calls since the vehicle is manual transmission. Vehicle was stationary when discovered. Vehicle has approximately 55,000 miles on it.

3 Trunk Wiring problem of the 2006 Volkswagen Jetta

Failure Date: 07/07/2014

The driver side door wiring harness has failed and with it the driver side controls do not work. The door will not lock, the window will not roll down, the gas cap release does not work and the trunk release does not work. The airbag light also came on. I have checked all fuses and have found no problems. After I had a certified mechanic check the vehicle, it was discovered all the wires in the driver side wiring harness are all broken.

4 Trunk Wiring problem of the 2006 Volkswagen Jetta

Failure Date: 06/02/2014

The driver side door wiring harness has failed and with it the driver side controls do not work. The door will not lock, the window will not roll down, the gas cap release does not work and the trunk release does not work. It also seems to have caused a short the rear driver side door as the window is stuck down and will not roll up. The airbag light also came on. I have checked all fuses and have found no problems.

5 Trunk Wiring problem of the 2006 Volkswagen Jetta

Failure Date: 03/05/2014

The indicator lights on the driver's door consol turns off when the door is open slightly more than halfway. If the door is closed the power window does not work sometimes, so I have to open the door slightly for it to work. Driver side door works occasionally as well as the trunk with the key less entry. I did some research on the internet and I now believe that it's the wiring harness causing the problems.

6 Trunk Wiring problem of the 2006 Volkswagen Jetta

Failure Date: 03/03/2014

The windows, gas door, mirrors, trunk no longer work because of a faulty wiring harness that vw has acknowledged. They are only fixing vehicles with less then 100,000 miles or 8. 5 years of service. It is a safety concern because the back two windows can be rolled down by children. I have 2 small children and one with downs syndrome that keeps rolling the windows down because the wiring harness has failed and vw is not going to fix the cars and instead let small children die because they can roll down the windows. Also, everytime I have to open the gas lever I scrape my arm on some pointing screws. This is ridiculous that a recall has not been issued on the vw Jetta wiring harness.

7 Trunk Wiring problem of the 2005 Volkswagen Jetta

Failure Date: 04/10/2013

Left turn signal, drivers door/all remote window switches, trunk/fuel door release, drivers door lock key fob locking of drivers door/drivers door internal lock are all inoperative. Occasionally, the cabin interior light remains on with a drivers "door open" indication on the instrument cluster even though the drivers door is closed and secure (but unable to be locked from the drivers door lock switch in the passenger cabin). The primary safety issue related to this problem is that the left turn signal displays on instrument cluster, but does not activate on the rear turn signal light and drivers window (along with all other windows remotely controlled on drivers door) are inoperative if needed to make a hand turn signal or egress from the vehicle in an accident (or submerged under water for an egress). Dealer and manufacture both refused to cover the replacement cost of the faulty part. I have performed every manufacture required service required (all documented) since purchasing this vehicle in the interest of safety and reliability. It had very low mileage on my purchase in early 2007. Per vw technical service bulletin, group 09-01 (201-7600), February 26, 2009, states that the drivers door wiring harness was manufactured 80 mm too short. This results in putting strain on the numerous wires in this harness near the door boot and connector plug causing wires to break and/or electrically short. My vehicle was affected by the VIN range of this manufactures service bulletin. The new replacement drivers door electrical harness are now 80 mm longer than the originally manufactured (installed) faulty part that the manufacture is unwilling to replace at their cost (parts or labor). I will pay for my repair personally, but believe that the safety aspect of this faulty part could compromise the safety of the driver and occupants in addition to other motorist.

9 Trunk Wiring problem of the 2005 Volkswagen Jetta

Failure Date: 05/01/2012

Windows, door locks, trunk and fuel door release and airbags non-functioning due to wiring harness located in drivers door. Found out there is issue concerning the length of the harness that causes wires to break over time.

10 Trunk Wiring problem of the 2006 Volkswagen Jetta

Failure Date: 10/10/2011

The wiring harness that runs from the engine compartment to the drives side door has cracking and broken wires. The service department states it needs to be replaced. They suggest it is not an isolated incident. Wires with broken insulation after 6 years in a door harness that is designed to open and close multiple times daily seems to be a significant safety issue. Are there other wire issues? is the wire (car built in mexico) an issue overall?.

11 Trunk Wiring problem of the 2005 Volkswagen Jetta

Failure Date: 07/08/2011

Wiring harness between the body and the doors flexes during opening and closing of the door. The wire coating becomes brittle with age and cracks causing stress points in the wire leading to breakage of 1 or more wires in the harness leading to inoperable controls and electronics in the door, possible electrical short, and potential fire hazard. This failure tends to occur after a couple years of usage. This particular vehicle failed at 65,000 miles. Usually the driver's door fails first as it is used most frequently. This equipment includes but may not be limited to window controls, door locks, door open sensor, air bag system crash sensor, trunk release switch, fuel door release switch, door mirror adjustment, mirror turn signal indicator, mirror heating element. Wiring harness must be replaced which costs approximately $150-$200. Harness should be redesigned with longer wires to avoid stretching of the wire and wire coating material changed to avoid brittleness with age and work hardening.

12 Trunk Wiring problem of the 2006 Volkswagen Jetta

Failure Date: 03/10/2011

Driver's side wiring harness failure - several wires in the wiring harness between the passenger compartment and driver door have failed, making it impossible to operate windows, door locks, release fuel door, and release trunk from driver door. The failed wiring also results in a constant door ajar indication on the instrument panel and illumination of the front dome and entry lamps. Safety systems may be compromised if the onboard computer believes the door is ajar. Vw states that this is a problem that they are familiar with, yet the cost for repair is over $400.

13 Trunk Wiring problem of the 2006 Volkswagen Jetta

Failure Date: 02/02/2011

I am the owner of a 2006 vw Jetta tdi sedan. I purchased the vehicle used in a private sale in 2009. By 2011 I was having numerous problems with the vehicle. The dual mass flywheel failed just after I had my car at the dealership for the timing belt service (approximate mileage 106,000). I had to have it towed (at my expense) to the dealership since it wasn't safe to drive the 130 miles. Dealership said it was a known problem but Volkswagen of America has not offered any assistance. Apparently someone has to die to get their attention. Approximate cost of repairs: $1,800. 2nd big problem is electrical. Wiring harness in the driver door failed soon after I purchased it. It started with the driver window switch not working. Then the lock/unlock button quit working. Then the interior/exterior safety lights. I have heard that it will progress to the trunk lid, the other windows, the fuel door, ect. Once again an extremely common problem due to a poor design. Once again Volkswagen of America has refused to offer assistance - the dealership quoted me just under $500 in parts and labor. Why would a harness cost $205!!! third problem is cosmetic issues. The paint is flaking off especially near the seams and at the wheel wheels. Rust formed where the paint bubbled up at two of the four wheel wheels. There is a service bulletin for paint problems in the generation before this vehicle and a 10-12 year corrosion warranty that vw refuses to honor. Additionally, problems with poor manufacturing practices and materials abound in this vehicle. The headliner pulls away from the pillars at the seams in the rear due to defective materials. It will separate from the roof and become a hanging visibility hazard. The plastic dash pieces don't fit together - shrinking and pulling away at the seams. Stereo buttons (as well as door switches) bubble and flake off.

14 Trunk Wiring problem of the 2006 Volkswagen Jetta

Failure Date: 01/02/2011

In the past year we have felt nothing but disappointment and frustration with our Jetta. The most concerning issue to us is that all controls and power on the driver side door do not work. We are unable to put down any windows from the driver’s side door, unlock or lock any doors, open the gas cap or open the trunk. The blinker on the driver’s side mirror does not work, the safety light at the bottom of the driver’s side door does not work when the door is opened, there is no control of the child safety locks, and the driver’s side and passenger side mirrors cannot be adjusted. I know that Volkswagen takes great pride in the safety of its vehicles, and as one can see, with the loss of power to the driver’s side door a substantial amount of these features are useless. I shutter to wonder if the airbags in the car are also on same wiring as the driver’s door. These are all huge safety concerns to us. And now, within the past two weeks the trunk sporadically won’t close and the battery is loosing its charge, which we know may be a normal maintenance issue, but it is just one more thing. It feels as if there is a new issue every week! . We now feel “stuck with this vehicle that we are unable to afford to fix. So we avoid driving it as much as possible because we don’t believe it is safe to drive our family with two young children around in. In addition to the safety concerns, the car cannot be driven through a drive through restaurant or a tollbooth since the driver’s side window will not come down. I’m sure this is not the reputation Volkswagen wants for its vehicles. We are very disappointed and feel helpless. I have read this complaint repeatedly on this website and wonder why this has not been recalled? please help!.

15 Trunk Wiring problem of the 2006 Volkswagen Jetta

Failure Date: 12/10/2010

Driver's side wiring harness failure - several wires in the wiring harness between the passenger compartment and driver door have failed, making it impossible to operate windows, door locks, release fuel door, and release trunk from driver door. There is no manual release for the fuel door. The failed wiring also results in a constant door ajar indication on the instrument panel and illumination of the front dome and entry lamps. Safety systems may be compromised if the onboard computer believes the door is ajar.

16 Trunk Wiring problem of the 2006 Volkswagen Jetta

Failure Date: 12/01/2009

Several wires in the wiring harness between the passenger compartment and driver door have failed, making it impossible to operate windows, door locks, release fuel door, and release trunk from driver door. There is no manual release for the fuel door. The failed wiring also results in a constant door ajar indication on the instrument panel and illumination of the front dome and entry lamps. The wire insulation and strands appeared to be brittle, which raises concerns about other wiring in the vehicle. This wiring was inside a protective rubber boot, integral to the harness, between the cabin and door. There was no moisture or debris within the boot when it was opened to inspect the wiring.

17 Trunk Wiring problem of the 2006 Volkswagen Jetta

Failure Date: 03/04/2006

I have a 06' Jetta it has 10,000 miles on it and has had several problems. 1. Stero broke after 2 mo. And 6 cd's were stuck in damaged cd player and I still have not recieved them back like I was told after 4 months of being fixed. 2. Paint was peeling off front bumper, was repaired. 3. Back center console would not stay in place. 4. Steering wheel makes sqeaking noise when turned to the right. 5. Hazard button fell into dash. 6. Paint is now peeling again. 7. Chrome on wheel is peeling. 8. A brand new transmission had to be put in after 3 attempts of fixing it vw tech support told the valencia service department to just replace it. 9. When replacing the transmission the service department noticed that the drive shaft which is holding the axel spinndeles and wheels altogether to the steering wheel. The bolt was stripped and tech support said it was a factory malfunction and unsafe to drive unless fixed . We came to find out the squeaking noise from the steering wheel was due to this problem.

18 Trunk Wiring problem of the 2002 Volkswagen Jetta

Failure Date: 03/01/2006

Purchased used 2002 vw Jetta 1. 8 turbo (5 speed) with 34,000 miles still under warranty. Taken to dealership for blown fuses (cigarette lighter), trunk latch, center console, and transmission repairs. Fuse problem was ongoing. Within a few months, a local mechanic installed a small boost gauge on the dash, which was wired into a 10 amp fuse. Within five days, the car was being backed out of the driveway when smoke began pouring from all the dash vents. The wire harness, fuse block, and controller components located behind the dash were destroyed by fire. Vw of America prepared to send investigators to nm, but when they discovered gauge wiring may have contributed, they did not investigate. Have read of other electrical fires behind instrument panel, dash, since this time. Our son was driving the car at the time of the fire, but was able to get out.

19 Trunk Wiring problem of the 2001 Volkswagen Jetta

Failure Date: 06/15/2001

Numerous problems with 2001 vw Jetta, purchased new in June, 2001. Including : windows sporadically malfunctioning (when I called vw corporate as well as my local dealer, I was told that after the dealer evaluated problem I could be responsible for the labor charge depending on the outcome of their diagnosis!!); trunk latch has been replaced once (out of warranty) and now latch does not respond to remotes nor to the inside release on driver door; driver door lock does not respond to remotes nor to control on driver door (the other three door locks are presently functioning); interior coating on plastic door handles and center console began to peel within six months of delivery; center console latch broke long ago; check engine light comes on/off sporadically (brought car to certified mechanic but problem undiagnosed); a wax substance was constantly running into doorwells; vw dealer replaced coil, cables and buffer in response to rough engine idle complaint and I incurred all costs and inconvenience of car in shop , this at 72,000 miles, hazard lights malfunctioned; turn signals malfunctioned; now I hear of a brake light recall and an emergency light switch problem. I am just realizing recently that I am not alone with my Jetta problems, that numerous jjetta owners are having the same problems ( I researched on internet) . Vw customer service not helpful at all in resolving these problems.
