3 Battery problem of the 2005 Volkswagen Passat

Failure Date: 03/01/2011

While driving my 2005 vw Passat station wagon for about 10 minutes, the check engine light flashed. As I was pulling to the side of the road, the battery light came on. I turned the car off and immediately noticed white smoke coming from the hood of the engine, as well as a brown burn circle. I got myself and my daughter out of the vehicle, and called 911. Within 2-3 minutes, the entire engine was engulfed in flames. The firemen informed me that they believe it started with/near the battery. It was considered an electrical fire. The car had not been acting up, nor had the check engine light been coming on in recent weeks or months. The car is a complete loss. The vw Passat was only 6 yrs old, with less than 70,000 miles on it. Regular tune-ups and maintenance was performed on this vehicle. It was shocking how quickly it went up in flames.

5 Battery problem of the 2003 Volkswagen Passat

Failure Date: 06/10/2009

Pollen filter and/ or sunroof drains become blocked and water leaks behind battery and into cabin of car. The water then pools under and behind the drivers seat where the convenience module is stored. I am concerned because it caused my car to be unable to start because it is affecting the electrical components of the car. In addition, the pooling under the drivers seat is troubling since it is a hub for interior electrical equipment. The convenience module in my car now has to be replaced.

6 Battery problem of the 2000 Volkswagen Passat

Failure Date: 07/04/2008

The contact owns a 2000 Volkswagen Passat. The contact experienced issues with the electrical system. The alarm in her vehicle would go off unexpectedly. She had to unplug the battery in order to shut off the alarm. In addition, the contact could not control the locking and unlocking of the doors or the windows going up and down. The only window she could control was the driver's side window. There was also approximately four inches of water under the driver's seat. She believed that it was collective rain water that did not drain, but rather escaped into the vehicle. She took the vehicle to the dealer and they stated that the repairs would cost over $4,000. The manufacturer called the dealer and asked them why it would cost so much for the repairs. The contact's case was filed by the manufacturer. She also took the vehicle to an outside mechanic and they stated that the issues were common among Volkswagen owners. The current mileage was approximately 103,000 and failure mileage was approximately 102,000.

7 Battery problem of the 1999 Volkswagen Passat

Failure Date: 12/12/2007

Over time leaves collected in the battery compartment of my '99 Volkswagen Passat wagon. This led to rain water leaking into the passenger compartment and corroding the ecu under the driver's seat. The alarm and locks started working on their own, sometimes in the middle of the night, and the vehicle would no longer start. The initial reaction from Volkswagen was to "cheaply fix" and the sell the car as soon as possible because it would have lifelong problems without a "proper fix" which would cost more than the car was worth (~$6-$8k).

9 Battery problem of the 1999 Volkswagen Passat

Failure Date: 12/02/2005

I own a 1999 vw Passat v6. It currently has approx 67,975 miles. From the first year of purchase to this current date, I've experienced the sunroof opening on it's own during winter months. This sunroof has a manual dial control, and therefore it mystifies me that this can occur. My rate of speed has no impact on the occurance, since I could be merely travelling at 45 50 mph when it happens. I've reported this issue to the dealer, but of course if the problem is not replicated when they test drive the car, it is considered non-existent (in their opinion). I am tired of the multiple premature complaints on this vehicle and at this point, I'm considering another vehicle. This is what my time line looks like: 48,824 miles replaced all upper links replace v belt 49,576 miles replaced water pump and battery 53,629 miles replaced cv boot joints and both front axels 57,512 miles replaced upper links again 61,972 miles, being told that all gasket seals have to be replaced. I'm currently driving with the folling conditions: no heat at my feet if my heat setting is for both body and feet. My key keeps coming apart and getting stuck in the ignition. My sunroof opens on its own when it's cold outside. My left rear passenger door lock wouldn't lock when I lock the car. The trunk light comes on when it feels like. I have to fill up on coolant every 700 miles or so.

10 Battery problem of the 2000 Volkswagen Passat

Failure Date: 05/13/2005

I own a 2000 v6 Passat, which I have serviced regularly at a vw dealership. On March 25, 2005, the dealership performed a 60k mile maintenance check on my Passat. This service included a check of my original vw battery. The battery readouts indicated that the battery was fine. On may 13, 2005 (mileage 61336), my battery completely exploded like a bomb when I went to restart my car after refueling at a petrol station. I contacted vw USA and they not only did not care about the situation but did not see that any resulting damage should be covered by them. Ultimately, I paid for the new battery, my insurance carrier covered windshield replacement and my vw dealership covered the remaining damage to the vehicle. My dealership informed me that I was the 2nd customer to experience this problem at their dealership.
