Volkswagen Passat owners have reported 17 problems related to coolant leaking (under the engine and engine cooling category). The most recently reported issues are listed below. Also please check out the statistics and reliability analysis of Volkswagen Passat based on all problems reported for the Passat.
A. The engine. 1. My Volkswagen Passat 2013 tdi can not pass massachusetts state inspection, after several times of repair the problem was tracked to emission that the repair shop was not able to fix it (alphacars & motorcycles, alphacars, 649 massachusetts Ave, boxborough, MA 01719, phone: (978) 263-9000). (dates of repairs: ~05/30/2020, ~06/29/2020) 2. Dealer did three recalls and repairing for emission, charged $590 (07/31/2020). But emission issue persisted (08/27/20), and needed to be returned to dealer (08/28/20). 3. Dealer intended to charge another $650 for diagnosis of the emission issue (09/09/2020). 4. The diesel emission issue of this vehicle is not fixed after many repairs, when this issue can be fixed is unknown, whether it is possible to have this issue fixed is unknown. Given that this diesel emission issue comes from Volkswagen's well known software scandal on diesel emissions, and likely due to defective modification conducted later, this vehicle imposes a major risk to driver's safety. B. Airbag. Every time I start the vehicle, I got warning message about the airbag, even though the vehicle is regularly maintained by Volkswagen dealer. The airbag may be defective, and imposes a major risk to driver's safety. C. The vehicle had major coolant leaking. At regular maintenance with dealer, after my complaint, the dealer found a hole and fixed it. Around middle of June, 2020, the leaking became very severe, I got warning light when driving on highway, and the engine temperature was very high and had a danger of complete shutdown.

My heater core is bad. There was a previous recall on older Passat models, but for 2015 it is not included. I had to pay $871 to have my heater core replaced, as it started to leak coolant in my car. One of the hoses going to my firewall also busted, so it had to be changed. The car was leaking lots of coolant from under the car too. On 9/11 after they supposedly fixed it on 9/07/19, my low coolant light turned on. I was near dealer, so they said they would look at it. They think it had an air bubble that came out, which made my coolant light come on. They topped it off. Dealer said they changed my heater core, but I still have no heat inside my car. Taking back 9/23 to have car looked at.

The car has coolant issues, had power steering system replaced, now there's a gas leak, replaced gas cap loss of power suspension is horrible now everytime I refuel the car struggles to turn on.
"in relation to fuel pump recall". . . . Since the year started my car has been hesitant to start and sometimes needs a second start. On January 9th I started my car up in the morning and about 3 symbols popped: the gas cap, engine check, and the warning symbols. I turned it off securing my gas cap and waited a few mins and turned it back on. Now the engine check is gone so I continue my morning commute. Eventually the gas cap symbol is off, warning is still on but now the engine check is back on so I went to get it checked out at advance auto parts with emission and leakage codes identified. So then I bring it to a local shop who specializes in vw and they tell me I have fuel, oil, and coolant leakage. They cant fix the fuel leak but the other two is fixable which only brings to me concern about this recent recall. I have read other drivers of my vehicle (2006 Passat) getting involved in fender benders, car stalls, engine problems etc. This will be a huge inconvenience if the car gives out on me and I need a quick resolution to this because I have a child who just turned 4 months and cant risk getting into a car wreck with her in the car. Vw at least give us a time frame on this issue because you're putting our lives at risks.

My vehicle has been nothing but a nightmare! first the thermostat housing broke got that fixed and then everything else went down hill! oil pressure light started going and then it started overheating. The hoses all break and leak the coolant out plus the transmission code p742 which the transmission is stuck off is on . I can't afford the car worst car ever. It is fine if idle but once your driving everything starts beeping and when I'm turning you hear a noise on the side that your turning!.

I have had my 2003 vw Passat a year now I have just noticed in the past week that it had a leak I thought it was from the window or sun roof I went to vacuum the car out on a nice day and seen that it still had very wet carpet and then noticed the carpet was a green color like it was coolant I then had my bf check it and it is. I run a daycare and use this car daily with my children we have been breathing in this coolant for weeks now and that probably explains my daughter saying she gets headaches when we drive the car. I have done some research and see it is a very common and recalled thing with the heater core and I had no idea I hope us breathing this in hasn't done any damage I have a one year old who has been in it this whole time as well. Im very unpleased with this car.
I noticed my coolant reservoir was low and added coolant. I had also noticed the smell of coolant in the car. The next day I check coolant level again it it was low with no leaks noticed under car. I opened rear passenger door and found at least 1" of coolant on top of the carpet. I started looking online for this issue and found hundreds of people that have experienced this on Volkswagen. I think they should have recalled these or at least have to correct the problem case by case. My granddaughter has to ride in the back of this car and I don't believe it's safe anymore. I will have to bypass heater core to stop this until repairs can me made. What can be done to get Volkswagen to fix this?.
My car has been leaking coolant. I took it to a shop and was informed that the heater core was bad. I have had to replace the inside computer already and probably all the carpet since the water has been leaking into the car. I suffer from asthma and can no longer drive this car since it smells like coolant/mold and not to mention water leaking on my foot as I drive (very unsafe since the pedal gets slippery. ) I have read online on many sites that there was a recall regarding this matter and the owners were never notified. I need this fixed before something bad happens; either I get into an accident or I end up in the hospital. Thank you very much for getting back to me and getting this matter fixed promptly.

I am the original owner of a 2000 vw Passat, 4 cyl. On 3/24/06, the defrost no longer worked properly in the vehicle. Pinkish-orange coolant started spraying out on my feet while driving, white smoke came spilling out of the vents & the coolant spread itself thick on the interior of the windshield & windows. This left it cloudy & I had to pull the vehicle over and wipe the windows with cleaner and paper towels. With it becoming immediately cloudy, I lost visibility of the cars in front of me. Coolant also leaked onto the passenger floor board/mat. I immediately looked online for feedback and found it could possibly be a cracked heater core (which is not covered under my extended warranty). I took it by a vw dealer for a drive by diagnosis, it was confirmed it was the heater core. I contacted vw of America immediately to notify them of this problem and asked if they could assist with 50%-100% of the repairs because it was a reported problem everywhere. Vw customer care said I needed to set up a diagnosis appt with the vw dealer, which was on 4/24/06. 10 minutes after I dropped my car off, my service consultant russell dilley w/miramar vw in san diego, CA called my cell phone and said "yes it is the heater core". Prior to leaving my car with him, he believed it to be a cracked heater core, just with my few symptoms explained and he said he has seen this problem many times before and he confirmed vw of America had covered the cost of the repairs. I notified vw of America customer care that the diagnosis was performed and ready. I had to pay $99. 00 for the so called one hour diagnosis appt, even though it was confirmed in 10 minutes. Customer care said they would contact me within 48 hours to let me know their decision w/the assistance of the repair. I received a call yesterday 5/1/06 from marlina, she said vw of America will not be able to assist with the repair of the cracked heater core because of the age of the vehicle & the mileage. Year 2000, mileage 89k.
