38 Engine Belts And Pulleys problem of the 2003 Volkswagen Passat

Failure Date: 08/08/2005

Purchased vehicle on 8/4/03 8/8/05 - engine oil light came on, vehicle diagnosed w/ "engine oil sludge" by dealership, warranty item. 8/11/05- spoke w/ dealership to confirm sludge issue and presented oil change receipts,(vehicle purchased w/ 19637 miles) , dealer declined to honor the warranty and recommended a engine flush & oil change 8/12/05 - retrieved vehicle and had engine flushed & oil changed 8/13/05 - vehicle cut off & remains inoperable 8/21/05 - vehicle was towed to receive diagnoses 8/26/05 - vehicle diagnosed w/ no oil pressure or compression. Cause - (bad oil pump) timing belt jumped r&r valve cover and locked up cam #1 cylinder. No sludge was found in engine, valve cover, oil pan or engine block. Engine was free of sludge and would not have caused the engine to fail (documented by auto repairman) 8/26/05 - towed vehicle to another (engine repair specialist) repair shop. 9/22/05 - diagnoses result "no" engine oil sludge found. (engine was totally disassembled and examined in every detail) sludge would be expected if poor maintenance was the issue. A simple oil flush would not have removed engine oil sludge (documented by service center) 9/23/05 - contacted vw customer care to report my findings. No resolution obtained to date. I was told to obtain another engine analysis. 9/26/05 - contacted vw again to inform them that another analysis is impossible because the engine is disassembled. 10/7/05 - towed the vehicle back to my home. Vehicle presently garaged and inoperable. * since then, I've read many accounts of this "same" issue happening to vw Passat owners. Vw has admitted to engine problems with their 4 cylinder turbo engines but has not issued a recall. This is a serious product stewardship issue and vw should be made to repair and reimburse consumers for these costly repairs. I've spent thousands of dollars in my attempt to uncover the "real" problem which is a faulty engine and/or oil pump.

39 Engine Belts And Pulleys problem of the 1998 Volkswagen Passat

Failure Date: 07/22/2005

While driving on i95 (MD) southbound from elkton, MD to aberdeen proving grounds, MD, the car suddenly stalled. Obviously, without engine power, the steering and brakes were difficult to operate. Traffic was however avoided due to aid of a highway patrol right behind me. The vehicle was picked up and towed within a couple of hours and taken to a local garage. Cause of the problem was failed timing belt. Car has less than 100,000 miles and it's onnly 7 years old. However, vw refuse to honor the 100,000 miles/10year power train warranty.

40 Engine Belts And Pulleys problem of the 1998 Volkswagen Passat

Failure Date: 06/05/2005

98 vw Passat have had nothing but one problem after the other with this vehicle. Just had to replace my oil pump now my timing belt went and destroyed my engine. After I see that this has happened to several others I believe vw should take care of this expense. I have had to go through the expense of the front control arms, speed sensor etc. My car has been in the garage more than I have drove it. Problems with transmission.

The consumer soon discovered there was a recall on the fuel pump, however the consumers vehicle identification number was not included in the recall. The front cv boot and timing belt were replaced. The vehicle also had a transmission leak. The drivers heated seat malfunctioned.

42 Engine Belts And Pulleys problem of the 2000 Volkswagen Passat

Failure Date: 12/23/2004

The car was making a funny noise and then the engine stopped. We had it towed to minuteman vw in bedford, MA and they said that the oil pump had failed and that both the oil pump and the engine would have to be replaced at a cost of $6,320. 00. The 2000 Passat has 60,586 miles on it and had been in for service at 55,478 miles. The service department told us that it should be covered under the 10 year/100,000 mile power train warranty, but when they submitted our claim to vw they refused to cover it because they said I needed to provide copies of every oil change receipt for the past 4 1/2 years. I was able to find 4 receipts, but I do not see anywhere in the owners manual where it clearly and explicitly states that warranty repairs will only be performed if all receipts for all services performed on the car are provided. I noticed that there have been several technical service bulletins issued on this car which relate to engine problems and would like this defect to be considered for a recall. Thank you.

45 Engine Belts And Pulleys problem of the 1998 Volkswagen Passat

Failure Date: 08/18/2004

(1) while driving down the highway at 60 mph the engine shut down and would not turn over again. I called a tow truck and had it delivered to my mechanics garage. (2) mechanic determined that it was the timing belt that went, and that Volkswagen had remanufactuered the tensioner and pulley for what ever reason. After buying new parts and rebuilding the head because the valves were destroyed upon contact with the pistons( naturally). After putting the engine back together with the new parts and rebuilt head, the cam seized up and blew the motor.

46 Engine Belts And Pulleys problem of the 1999 Volkswagen Passat

Failure Date: 06/01/2004

Timing belt on vehicle broke resulting in damage to the engine valves. The newer editions of the Passat have redesigned tension systems for the timing belt.

47 Engine Belts And Pulleys problem of the 1999 Volkswagen Passat

Failure Date: 04/10/2004

There are no specific events leading to the failure besides regular use of the vehicle Passat 1999. The abs warning light periodically has come on and lengthened in duration until it stayed on permanently. The braking is still normal, but the abs control unit is recommended to be replaced by the dealer. I have not replaced the abs control. Also, the timing belt tensioner went out on my Passat 1999. I was driving on a freeway when the car just cut out. I coasted it over to the side of the road where it would not turn over. This part was redesigned on later models because of its tendency to fail. I had to redo all of my rods. I still have the old part in my possession.

48 Engine Belts And Pulleys problem of the 1999 Volkswagen Passat

Failure Date: 02/18/2004

Timing belt failure caused a catastrophic engine failure. No warning is described in owners manual or maintenance schedule. Engine failed at 91000 miles during highway driving, required some immediate action to avoid an accident.

49 Engine Belts And Pulleys problem of the 1998 Volkswagen Passat

Failure Date: 01/05/2004

Vehicle lost all power on freeway traveling at 65 mph. Would not turn over. Linkage to timing belt malfunctioned @ 100,710 miles. Found out that both timing belt and linkage are not due to be changed until 105,000. Faulty prior to vw's specifications.

50 Engine Belts And Pulleys problem of the 1999 Volkswagen Passat

Failure Date: 08/15/2003

Electrical problems from the start, melting of plastic, lights in the car working sporadically at best. Oil, drain, oil pump, camshaft, all blamed on lack of verifiable oil changes. Timing belt - let go on highway at 85000 miles (warranty for 1999 Passat, 100,000 miles) blamed on oil changes. 82 days in shop steering goes during this time and I'm told I need an altenator [ 3rd one ] the story goes on and on. . . . . .

51 Engine Belts And Pulleys problem of the 1999 Volkswagen Passat

Failure Date: 06/18/2003

Timing chain tensioner seals leaking and vw will not honor their replacements under the powertrain warranty.

52 Engine Belts And Pulleys problem of the 1998 Volkswagen Passat

Failure Date: 05/09/2003

The timing belt on my 1998 vw Passat with the 1. 8t engine failed at 75,000 miles stranding me by the side of the road. The car has been regularly maintained by vw. The vw maintenance schedule requires replacement of the belt at 105,000 miles. Vw denied my warranty claim stating that the original warranty applies only to the first owner. However, my research shows that this is a well known problem and vw refuses to do anything about it.

53 Engine Belts And Pulleys problem of the 1999 Volkswagen Passat

Failure Date: 04/27/2003

The timing belt loosened, flapped up, and severed. When this occurred the vehicle lost power and stalled. The engine would not run and the vehicle did not accelerate. The vehicle displayed a rough idle and rattled. This was a common problem with these vehicles, per dealership. The timing belt tensioner failed while the vehicle was in motion. The timing belt broke after the tensioner shredded it. The vehicle was shifted into park while in motion. The power brakes and the power steering failed. The vehicle was purchased with 52,515 miles and the failure had already occurred. Less than 4k miles later. The consumer requested reimbursement.

54 Engine Belts And Pulleys problem of the 1998 Volkswagen Passat

Failure Date: 04/01/2003

Nar 04/07/2003 mr. The timing belt, cylinder heads and the mass air flow had to replaced and the consumer is requesting reimbursement. In the past the consumer had to replace 2 window regulators, the sun roof opened and closed for no reason, the rear door would not lock, the windshield wipers did not work.

55 Engine Belts And Pulleys problem of the 1999 Volkswagen Passat

Failure Date: 03/17/2003

Timing belt tensioner on my 1999 vw Passat 1. 8t (VIN # wvwma63b2xe246012) failed at 76,623 miles causing timing belt to slip off, thus causing major engine valve damage. I was close to home and was able to return home and call a tow truck, but had I been further away from home I'm not sure what would have happened. Vw advises owners to have timing belts checked at 40,000 and 80,000 miles and to have them replaced at 106,000. Because the timing belt tensioner fails early I believe this part should be recalled or at the very least that vw should advise owners to replace the timing belt tensioner at 60,000--70,000 miles in order to avoid severe engine damage.

56 Engine Belts And Pulleys problem of the 1997 Volkswagen Passat

Failure Date: 01/15/2003

Seat belts never raval all the way (minor issue), air conditioner gets cold only for about a minute (once again minor), and now it misfires on cylinders 5 and 6. I have replaced both O2 sensors, the coil pack (3 times), ignition wires (twice), spark plugs (twice in 4,000 miles), and the ecu. Still misfires after 3 shops and the dealer having it twice for about 2 weeks straight (ken garff orem vw/Audi dealership). They told me "there is nothing we can do", vw America said "there is nothing we can do, those dealerships are independent from us". The dealer the first time I brought it in, broke some engine coverings, that I had to complain about to have them decide to replace. The next round I got the car back and the hood was poped a little bit but closed (I live 2 miles from the dealer). So I decided to take a look and not to my suprise, they left a few engine components unbolted and sitting in the engine compartment. They also left their tools and the bolts in small casim parts of the sheet metal. The wire harness was looked at and they convieniently left the wires cut but not all the way through. Vw America all through this said only that I can complain and that they will "note this in my record, but thats all we can do. " they haven't even offered to help me find a new dealer or tell me a typical way to fix a misfire.

57 Engine Belts And Pulleys problem of the 1998 Volkswagen Passat

Failure Date: 01/14/2003

My car died suddenly while I was driving on route 9. My car started to lose acceleration, but I was unable to pull off the road before the engine died. The problem turned out to be related to the timing belt. Apparently the timing belt tensioner failed, causing the timing belt to go into the engine and damage cylinder heads. My local mechanic has informed me the manufacturer has issued a service bulletin that recommends replacing the part. I had the part inspected at 55,000 miles by my local dealer and was not told of the problem or advised to replace the part. At 66,000 miles, the part failed, causing the engine failure during highway driving. The manufacturer is refusing to cover the cost of repair, stating that the car is out of warranty as I am not the original owner.

58 Engine Belts And Pulleys problem of the 1999 Volkswagen Passat

Failure Date: 10/20/2002

Consumer stated that the timing belt broke, causing the engine to freeze up. Ts.

59 Engine Belts And Pulleys problem of the 1999 Volkswagen Passat

Failure Date: 09/06/2002

I purchased a 1999 volkswagan Passat in April of 2002 with 49,000 miles on it the timing belt broke on it at 58,000 miles in September of that same year. As per volkswagon, the belt is not due to be changed until 105,000 miles. It ruined the top end of my engine, cost to repair is 3,000-4,000 dollars. Volkswagan will not pay for any of the cost, I find this to be unfair that I should get only 6 months use out of a car that I still owe 17,000 dollars on.

60 Engine Belts And Pulleys problem of the 1997 Volkswagen Passat

Failure Date: 08/01/2002

The engine cuts out without warning while I am driving. I have not bee rear ended but I'm afraid that I might be. When the engine dies I pull to the side of the road with any remaining power. After 30 seconds to 1 minute I'm able to restart the engine and proceed. I have had the vechicle towed 2 times to the Volkswagen Audi dealership here in las vegas. The first time the dealer did recall work on the engine, changed the timing belts and air filter. The second time the dealer blamed the problem on a faulty ignition switch. After picking up the car my husband and I have still experienced the engine cutting out. This is a potentially dangerous problem especially in las vegas where the traffic is intense. I have read online at a tdi forum that other owners of this car have experienced this problem and that it may be due to a faulty relay in the fuse box. Mr.

61 Engine Belts And Pulleys problem of the 1998 Volkswagen Passat

Failure Date: 02/02/2002

The timing belt tensioner fails causing the belt to become loose and fail prematurely. Vw is aware of this problem. They have in fact issued an updated part that correct this problem. However I know of many people who have complained about the same problem, and this should be recalled. It is goingt o cost me more than 1,500 dollars to fix this and I am doing it myself. If I were to have taken this to the dealership it would be double that. When the belt fails the valves get bent. I love this car, but htis is a joke. The whole reason I bought this car was so I would not need to work on it.

62 Engine Belts And Pulleys problem of the 1998 Volkswagen Passat

Failure Date: 01/01/2001

Catalytic converter replaced early on in ownership. Water pump, oil pump, timing belt replaced two months ago. Turbo replaced twice and still defective. Electrical problems with driver's side window, heated seat, trunk light. Suspension system bushings need replacement @ only 56,000 miles. Steering column replaced early on.

63 Engine Belts And Pulleys problem of the 2000 Volkswagen Passat

Failure Date: 12/01/2000

Consumer stated the vehicle hesitated during start up in cold weather, and also there was a rough start at times, also the water pump seized, causing the timing belt and the hydraulic tensioner to be damaged.
