Drove car without problems. Came back an hour later and it started, but engine was shaking. Moved it across parking lot and shut engine off. Next time I tried to turn it on, would not start. Took it to mechanic, said that timing chain broke and ruined the rest of the engine. Did research and found this to be a common issue with vw engines. Faulty timing chains are used which cause catastrophic engine failure leaving driver at risk if this happens when driving. Even when not driving, the possibility of such a common occurrence from one of their products failing and ruining the rest of the car is unfair to consumers and Volkswagen should be held accountable beyond warranty liabilities for any of their vehicles that this happens to. They should not be allowed to build faulty engines and leave consumers to foot the bill for their shoddy designs and workmanship. ## #vpic# 1 - check digit (9th position) does not calculate properly #vpic#.

Timing chain decided to give up as I was driving on a major highway. Now I'm stuck having to potentially replace the engine, a 5k bill. Just purchased the car last year and still making payment on it. Never had any indication or illumination on the dashboard of warning for the engine failure.

Timing chain broke resulting in catastrophic engine failure. This vehicle has had numerous recalls and is the subject of multiple class action lawsuits. If you have the option to purchase a vw cc do not do it. These vehicles are complete garbage and should be recalled completely by the manufacturer.
Volkswagen timing chain has been replaced 3 times by Volkswagen each time the chain needed to be replaced, it was just outside of warranty leading to law suit. And this time, just outside manufacturing warranty by 2 days, the rocker arms in my vw 2. 0 engine failed also locking the motor up completely unable to repair. I've looked online and there are hundreds if not thousands of similar complaints. If we know volkswagon knew about these issues why is there no recall to service the effected (now 3 times and permanent) a vehicles safety of operation on texas state roads and highways yet dont get reimbursed due to 3 days. . . . . Was driving straight on tollway access road and motor locked up. No noise no indication. No warning.

Since the summer of 2017 I have been having problems with my Passat stalling, and or loosing poower when I am driving, last September 2017 I was told that a recall (20ae) was coming out that was related to my failures. Around October 15, 2017 I found out that the recall was issued. Since then I have been told by the local volkswagon garage that parts for the recall are not available. My case# from volkswagon group of America is #519607. At one point I was told by volkswagon group of America that I should get in touch with my local dealer (Volkswagen of marietta) and have it expected. On February 27, 2018 (case number 180145272) I called again and was told that my complaint would again be registered. I will now be up to the regional manager to look at his case load and respond. I do not recall him ever responding to me. The local dealer at that time said that they would do something only if the car was inspected and the found was found. They also told me that the problem was only detectable if the problem occured whe they were testing the car. If they did not detect the failure I would have to pay for the inspection. It is therefore obvious to me that this is a non-starter and I will have topay for an inspection and never get a repair for my problem unless I pay close to $2,000. I am a married senior citizen (80 years old) , adisabled veteran and wife who is 77 years old and we rely on this car. Due to this problem and other lies by vw the value of my car is less than what I owe on the car. I would have liked to sell the can and buy another. The car's engine failed after a violent shake this last Friday June 8, 2018. It has been ok over the weekend. Something needs to be done. Any suggestions? this morning I again called volkswagon group of America, and was told that I would get a return call which has yet to happen. My phone # is 770-309-9678.

I was driving the car when the engine failed without any warning and without any dashboard instruments indicating impending failure. Me and my CO-passenger are lucky to be alive today. Further we are lucky we didn't crash into a public bus pulling in at the bus stop as we veered to the right to brake and park the vehicle. This car has been meticulously maintained at the dealership since its acquisition and at the 65,000 service it was given an excellent bill of health. When the car was towed to the dealership for repairs it was diagnosed as unusual engine failure.

On July 16, 2014 at approximately 5:00 pm, my 2012 Volkswagen Passat tdi sel premium lost power on the highway. The engine failed and shut off while I was traveling on interstate 95 north and left me stranded on the highway surrounded by cars traveling at speeds greater than 65 mph. The engine failure put my life, my colleague's life and my fetus'¿ life in danger and could have been disastrous for other motor vehicles as well. My car was towed to a Volkswagen service center, where they inspected the fuel system and found a broken bolt. This bolt held the fuel rail and fuel injectors in place and when it broke, caused the injectors to pop out of the cylinder head and the subsequent engine failure. The installed bolt was part of the fuel system replacement repair that another dealership service center, closer to my home, performed back in April 2014. I'¿ve had three major incidents with my vw now, all within the last 3 months and it seems to be stemming from the fuel system replacement. When the fuel system was replaced, the service center blamed it on a "bad batch of diesel fuel" from a local gas station. They said that within 3 weeks, they've had around 25 cars come in with the same problem. My car is not even 3 years old and has only 44,000 miles on it. This is completely unacceptable. Because of these incidents, the last one of which put my life as well as 2 other lives in grave danger, I would like to submit this complaint, in case it is a more wide spread problem.

Engine failure.
The vw 1. 8t engine has know sludge issues that lead to engine failure. When the engine fails the driver looses all power functions associated with the vehicle. This includes steering and brakes. This is exactly what happened to me and I was lucky enough to be in the left hand lane and was able to pull over and park. Had this happened when I was on an interstate it could have been a completely different outcome.
My wife was driving alone in our 2007 Volkswagen Passat with the 3. 6 liter engine on a remote, lonely rural road when the "check engine and oil" lights illuminated. She pulled off the road as soon as possible but was frightened at being alone and stranded on a remote road. Fortunately a texas state trooper drove by, stopped and called a tow truck from the nearest town. The vehicle was towed to a vw dealership. The engine was declared a total loss, apparently due to loss of oil pressure. An estimate of $12,000 was quoted to me for replacing the engine. Volkswagen of America refused to authorize repairs under the 60,000 mile power train warranty in spite of the numerous complaints registered on line for this exact same problem with this exact same year, make, model and engine including NHTSA odi numbers 10229007, 10203527, 10203183 and 10193036 and additional numerous complaints on the vw vortex website. I have the original odometer disclosure statement showing that vw had driven the vehicle 195 miles before I purchased it. I am filing this complaint because of the potential danger of personal injury to occupants due to fire or harm from passing motorists due to being stranded in a remote location. Vw has known of this problem for some time but has refused to take action to remedy the issue prior to catastrophic engine failure.

"oil sludge" related repairs on '98-04 model year vw Passat equipped with 1. 8l turbo engines. Was not notified until engine light came on March 2010. Letter from vw of America did not prescribe 3000 mile oil change, but when contacted, said in order for "extended warranty to be enforced" vehicle must have 3000 mile oil change. Letter from vw subsequently faxed over on 3/22/10 does not state rules regulating oil change or subsequent limitations on "extended warranty". My 04 vw Passat with 35k miles had to have a new engine, and had I seen the August '04 letter prior to 03/10 would have gotten rid of car as soon as I read letter. The engine is clearly defective, and vw has an obligation to inform all vw owners of these vehicles to inform them of this deformity. I bought the car new in 2004 and never saw a copy of this letter until my engine failed. The letter states 5000 mile oil change intervals, but when I presented proof to gunther vw of coconut creek florida, that my car was in compliance, they stated that it had to be 3000 mile intervals. There are over 197000 websites, and blogs dealing with the vw 1. 8 turbo, but no one has addressed this problem, and people continue to buy these cars off used car lots, unaware that they are buying a car with limited expectations, and possible engine replacement. Please feel free to contact me at [xxx]. So that we can discuss saving someone's life before this car's engine failure in heavy traffic. You have officially been notified of the dangers of this engine. [xxx]

The contact owns a 2005 vw Passat. While driving 30 mph, the low pressure warning light illuminated on the instrument panel; which instructed her to discontinue operation. It the contact chose to continue operating the vehicle engine failure could have occurred. The vehicle was towed to a dealer for inspection. A technician replaced the turbo along with the oil and pick-tube; to avoid oil from entering into the inner cooler. The current and failure mileages were 62,000. Updated 10/21/09

2004 Volkswagen Passat. Consumer writes in regards to engine failure and unsatisfactory customer service at dealership. The consumer was informed it would cost 8,000 to replace the engine. She discovered a recall was issued for wagons for engine oil sludge. The dealer then stated, they would replace the engine for $4,000. The consumer stated the mileage was well within range, for the engine to be covered under the 65,000 mile warranty.
I currently lease a 2005 vw Passat. Warranty offered: 5 yr/ 50,000 mile. Approx. Nov 7, 2008 vehicle dashboard began to register "stop oil press low". Immediately pulled into closest gas station and purchased a synthetic oil for vw thinking this would solve the problem. On Nov 17, 2008 dashboard lit up again with same message and immediately brought vehicle into vista vw, pompano bch, florida. Was instructed that issue was possibly due to faulty oil pressure dip stick cylinder and need of oil change. (cylinder replaced and oil change completed) prior oil change was completed at vista vw pompano beach. Vw mechanic placed a clear oil change maint. Sticker with incorrect mileage due at next oil change. Oil change should have occurred at 38,000 miles vs. 45,000. Vista vw stated I would need to pay for a diagnostic test to be completed (approx $166. 00) as well as an hourly charge for labor (approx. $110 p/hr) not including any and all repair to be paid for upon completion. This due to warranty expired. Brought vehicle in at 792 miles over 50,000. Due to the expense that I would have incurred it was not feasible for me to go ahead and perform this diagnostic test hence causing me to leave no further choice but to decline service. I attempted to trade my Passat in early and release a new vehicle and was unsuccessful in doing so. Approximately 1 month later I was at gunther vw coconut creek and informed finance mgr that I now have an engine light on. I was told to try and drive the vehicle back home and see if the light goes out. That maybe it's a faulty sensor. Upon arrival at my residence the vehicle completely shut down and engine failed. The following day I had the vehicle towed to a mechanic. My mechanic stated that the approx. Cost for repair would be anywhere between $8,000 - $10,000. I immediately began research and found there is a lawsuit from the consumers of vw Passats in regard to this exact same mechanical issue & vw will not comply with this issue.
The contact owns a 2004 Volkswagen Passat. While driving 50 mph, the stop warning indicator illuminated on the instrument panel. Within seconds, the contact was unable to accelerate. The vehicle was towed to the dealer and they stated that the engine failed due to a massive oil deposit. The engine was replaced. The VIN was unknown. The failure mileage was 77,000 and current mileage was 89,000.
I have a 2004 vw Passat 1. 8 t. I have a complaint with this whole oil sludge issue. Although I do not have a problem yet but I want to be prepared in the advent of mechanical failure. The problem I have is that I received a letter in the mail 2 years ago about the possibility of engine failure do to oil sludge. I since then have been taking the car to the dealer and paying 80 dollars to get the oil changed with the full synthetic oil. Now I am reading that even when using the synthetic oil there are numerous cases of engine failures do to oil sludge. Not to mention the dealer will not cover costs of engine replacement if all receipts of oil changes are not shown. Which is not fair because up until 2 years ago I did not even think we had a problem. So vw has a defect with there unsafe engines and on top of it they scare people into getting the oil changed with full synthetic and then come up with an excuse like you were late on an oil change therefore you have to pay $5,000. 00 for engine replacement. I still owe $12,000. 00 on the care and I owe more then the car is worth so I cannot sell it, please tell me what can I do to protect myself. Had I have known this in 2004 I would never have purchased the vehicle. I just don't that this is the american way to sell people a inferior product and then make money off there turmoil.
Engine fails due to oil sludge problem.
Turbo started sucking up oil, eventually leading to engine failure.
Complete/catastrophic engine failure at approx 1,800 miles. Dealer stated bolt relating to timing chain failed, causing serious internal engine damage. Vehichle was replaced, but new vehicle has same engine, and many others with same engine are having similar failures.
2002 Volkswagen Passat 1. 8t engine failure due to oil sludge at 62,600 miles. .
Complete engine failure check oil pressure light appeared at 38000 miles; brought to vw dealer - told that the sensor light was stuck on car is taken to vw dealer at 40444 for 40000 mile maintenance check oil pressure light appears at 44578 miles; car taken to another dealer and dealer claims engine is total loss.
Since purchasing my 2002 Passat in November 2001 it has regularly had problems with the electrical system. The items that have broken have been: stereo (on 3 different occasions, has necessitated 6 trips to dealership), engine failure light gone off 3 times, headlights failed to go on, indicator light stopped functioning, car more often than not fails to turn over without multiple attempts.
