Turbocharger failed. Started making noises, then power losses, then dashboard lights. By the time I got to the dealership, it was no longer drivable. Dealership diagnosed turbocharger failure due to 'internal malfunction' and stated that it was not a problem that could have been caused by driving style, external factors.

While stopped at a red light, the engine accelerated by itself (computer failure?). My husband, who was driving, had to use both feet, pressing down as hard as he could, to stop the car. Fortunately, no one was in front of us and we were far enough back that we did not accelerate into the intersection. The engine sound returned to normal after 15-30 seconds and we drove it home without further incident but we have stopped driving the car for safety reasons. In addition, the abs computer module has also failed, though we have not had any incidents related to that failure as the brakes are otherwise fine.

The contact owns a 2003 Volkswagen Passat. The contact stated the vehicle started to make noises while driving 40mph. He stated that the oil function light also came on. The vehicle was taken to a mechanic and they stated that they have seen this before and should take the vehicle to the manufacturer. The contact took the vehicle to the manufacturer and they refused to repair the vehicle because he didn't have all his records for the oil changes. The failure and current mileages was 96,000.

Engine noise, rattle, oil light. Engine (turbo diesel // Passat) does not seem normal and much noisier than usual. Other fiends with tdi's have had major concerns with their cars (same circumstances).

I have a '01 vw Passat. I had to go to the vw dealer today since I was hearing a pinging noise when I drive. They checked and advised that the lower control arm and tie ends would need to be replaced since they were worn out. The car has 77k miles and on researching have found that other vw Passat owners from the same time frame are having the same issue. It has been attributed to design flaws. I am worried that this is going to deteriorate and lead to an accident. Additionally they identified a valve cover camshaft seal leakage. This is another issue that has been identified by other owners.

The contact owns a 2003 Volkswagen Passat. While driving 60 mph the vehicle began to make noise and then stalled. The vehicle did not restart and was towed to a mechanic. 2003 vw Passat suddenly began making engine noise and oil pressure warning came on. Vw determined problem was sludge, and they cleaned the engine leaving a bill of $1900 plus that they are refusing to cover with manufacturers warranty unless I can produce oil chg receipts. I have done 2 of them myself and only have bank statements with credit card charges. The others, I have receipts for. They are still refusing to cover. This is a major widespread problem and their recommendations to change from regular oil to synthetic oil came in 2004, a year after I was following their previous instructions, etc. For a known issue, they should not be allowed to hold consumers hostage on a situation like this. I do my own oil chgs to save money. My 10k oil chg at vw was $110. I can do it for less then half of that amount.
