3 different occasions my car would loose power and shut down on the highway. I had it towed and all three times they stated it was different things and that they had to take steps in replacing good parts to find the bad ones. Just to find out that it was the fuel pump control module that they thought it was the whole time. Now there is a recall on it. Which I have summitted the paper work and they conveniently cannot find. This past weekend my car wouldn't turn over at all when I tried to start it in a parking lot so I had it towed for the 4th time in 2. 5years. They are claiming that the engine motor is bad and it would cost $7500. 00 to replace. The technician cannot find any oil leaks nd claim there was only about a half of court of oil in the motor. I had the oil changed less than 2 months prior and both Volkswagen and my mechanic said that there is no way it could of run for that long on half a court of oil and should hold 5. 6 quarts. Which leads to the motor eating so to speak the oil. ( a bad engine) although I spent over $20'000. 00 on this vehicle and have had all these issues Volkswagen is telling me that they will not help at all with repairing the engine. That I will have to eat the $9000. 00 still owed on the vehicle. Words cannot describe how disappointed I am with the customer service by Volkswagen.

My car has oil leak. I went to puente hills Volkswagen four time. After replace twice rear seal and oil separator. The engine is still leak. I went to local mechanic to do inspect. The leaking is just from big leak to small leak. I did take a picture and email to vw USA. They could not do anything. Even with warranty repair, the car could not fix.

1. Oil was leaking and we repaired it in a local garage. A day later we noticed the oil sludge problem - which told us oil something, stop engine. We called the vw dealer in hartford, CT, and they suggested to bring the car in immediately otherwise it will impact the engine. We immediately took and droped it at the vw dealer and they called us next day telling the oil is not getting into the engine. Everything is blocked. They suggested to repair it otherwise the engine will be dead. We asked them to repair and paid close to $1800. They have replaced bunch of pipes, and parts but labor cost was lot more than parts. But I learned on the internet, that this is an existing problem and vw is aware of it. I read thru few forums on the net, and they all suggested, if I do not have all the oil change receipts, they will not cover the repair charges. But I am surprised, that vw dealer never mentioned about the existing problem, I had to learn thru internet. 2. Check engine sign comes all the time on my dashboard, first time I took it, they repaired (same dealer) fixing and replacing small parts and again most of it is labor charges and less parts. We paid about $2000. All these repairs happened within couple of months of each other. Again 10 days later, the check engine sign comes and they repaired again few things and charged about $500. A week later the check engiine sign comes again. We call the dealer and he says bring it in. I am sick and tired of taking this car every week to the dealer and paying them lot of money every time I take it. My car is 2002 vw Passat 1. 8t. I heard there are lot of known problem with this model and dealer never mentioned to us once.

The contact owns a 2004 Volkswagen Passat. On October 24, 2009 she noticed that the vehicle had an oil leak. The dealer replaced the oil pan at the owners expense for $500. On January 12, 2010, the oil failure recurred; however, the dealer replaced the oil tank for $500. She stated that the failures occurred when she drove over a speed bump and a rock while driving approximately 15 mph. I have talked to, blogged with, and communicated with various Volkswagen Passat owners and previous owners one complaint that has just become my biggest problem is due to oil sludge build up that occurs and effects the oil pressure censor in these vehicles I own a 2002 Passat wagon and had a terrible oil leak months after I got it covered by warranty. Now months after, I start blogging and investigating on my own the cost to repair this so called oil sludge problem which is so bad in these vehicles I am told this will cost $500-$2000 to fix! why hasn't this problem which is not covered or honored by Volkswagen or extended warranty been recalled???? this is a very common problem, and the fact that I take very good care of my vehicle sound be taken into consideration when it goes in the shop for such a common default in these cars. . . Please help shine the light on this issue I am sure if it is investigated by you that you will see the hardship of this problem hopefully you aren't a Passat owner yourself.
It never occurred to me that there was a problem with the engine. . . Everytime I have the oil changed but it seems to be losing a little bit of oil. I need to add oil every 200 to 300 miles to the engine. . . . I've checked for oil leaks. . Cant find any. . . Please advise. . . Rear seals? maybe.
Car driven to airport parking on 9/26 running fine. Car picked up at airport parking on 10/4. Engine running a bit rough. "check engine" light started to flash. Within five miles, there was an engine fire behind engine by firewall low. Before emergency/fire personnel could arrive, car fully engulfed and totally destroyed. Car regularly maintained. No oil/fluid leakage. Running fine prior to eight day idle in parking garage.
I have a 2001 vw Passat that I purchased a 18 months ago. The car was a certified vw and had a warranty extended till 74,000 miles. At 70,000 miles while driving I had the stop low oil pressure light come on- it was time for an oil change so I took it in for an oil change and for the dealer to find the problem. No issue was found. Now at 75,500 miles the light comes on again- this time more issues. I pulled over immediately to find that all my oil was leaking out of the car. Towed vehicle to closest vw dealer as I was 120 miles away from home. Dealer informs me that the camshaft adjusters were leaking oil badly and the cost to fix is $2,600. - car is still in the shop and hopefully no more problems will be found. 1,500 mi outside warranty and vw can do nothing to help lower the expense- even though I had a issue w/ low oil while within my warranty period.

My car, a 2004 vw Passat glx automatic, has had a transmission problem since the day I bought it, when the salesperson told me it just needed to adjust to my driving style. Months later, it was clear that it wasn't adjusting to my driving style. I took it in and it was "fixed. " about may or June of 2006, it began to experience problems again, e. G. , slamming, surging, delayed engagement, etc. I gave it some time, hoping it would "readjust," then took it in November of 2006, when the problems had become more acute. In a 4-5 minute test drive within a mile of the dealer, the most worrisome malfunctions could not be repeated. The service manager at the time said the minor issues were normal, and that I would have to "write a letter" to get the problem addressed. On Saturday, 2/3/07, a transmission surge propelled my car over a speed bump and into the concrete, causing what I presumed was an oil leak. This transmission issue presents obvious hazards to people, in addition to property. As of today (2/6/07), the dealer is requesting that I pay approximately $900 to fix the oil pan so they can drive the car and address the transmission malfunction.
With just about 70000 miles on the Volkswagen Passat, the engine started leaking oil from 4 areas: cam seals, valve gaskets and some leaks on top of the catalytic converter. The oils leaked onto the catalytic converter causing toxic fumes. The problem recurs consistently even after fixing it. The Volkswagen Passat 2001 model is extremely dangerous with such rudimentary engine problems and could potentially cause death. There is no clear documentation on what parts are covered under warranty available to the customer. With the nearest dealership 30 miles away, it becomes extremely difficult to take the car to the dealer everytime this happens just to check if the parts will be covered under warranty and it costs nearly $3000 to fix these problems.

I own a 2004 Volkswagen Passat, which I lease from vw. I was backing out of my driveway at no more than three miles per hour into the street. As I cut the wheel to keep the vehicle on my side of the traffic lanes, I ran askew of the driveway and over the rising edge where the driveway rises to meet the curb - a mere 6". I have pictures. I heard a faint scraping noise and lamented the fact I scraped the bottom of the car, but given the miniscule height of the drop from mid-curb edge to the street, I didn't think anything of it and proceeded to my destination and then back home without incident. The next time I used my car I noticed a large puddle of oil and was shocked to find that the oil pan, which was strategically engineered to reside at the lowest and most susceptible place on the engine, had the tiniest crack and was leaking oil. I called vw to inquire about a new part where they informed me that the oil pan is aluminum and cost $158 for a new one, but that because it is bolted to the vehicles sub-frame it will cost me $650 in labor to repair the part. Nearly $800 to fix an oil pan? this is clearly an attempt by vw to extort more money from its customers. Who would design a vehicle in such a manner as this otherwise? to place an aluminum oil pan at the lowest point of the engine with no protection is criminal. Luckily I noticed this leak, but others who may be less observant could easily rupture this oil pan as innocuously as I did and failing to notice the leak, continue to drive the car as it leaks oil - potentially burning up the motor and causing dangerous engine fires or worse, the engine seizing at high speeds. I contacted vw about this issue and that they wouldn't do anything to help me recoup the costs of this repair. This car has a major safety flaw that could make millions of motorists susceptible to serious harm and I hope that the NHTSA will further investigate this issue and help save any future loss of money or life.
The contact took vehicle to dealer for recall repairs. Upon inspection the technician noticed the steering assembly came loose. The vehicle was being repaired at the dealership. They replaced both lower control arms and both tie rods. Also, the dealership also found there was an oil leak and the abs was defective. The technician discovered the steering rack assembly was loose to the point it could have fallen of from the frame. Updated 11/29/05.

Purchased the vehcile (second-hand) from the Lexus dealership on veterans drive in metairie,la back in March 2004. Here is my complaint: my family evacuated for hurricane 'katrina' and we left the vw behind at the house. Well, it sat for about a month. Once we got back to the vehicle, we noticed it was not running good at all. Very rough. Very different than before the storm. I checked the car out and found out it was very low on oil. Yet, we have no oil leaks. I could not explain where the oil had gone. And the oil in the case of the vehicle looked "grainy" and "sludgey". We thought it was storm related and filed a claim with state farm. We then took it to the local vw dealer near my office to have to locate the problem. The vw service guy said, yes, Volkswagen has identified a mechanical problem with our model vehicle where the turbo can not handle conventional motor oil. They would fix that free of charge. . . . However, they need the last 12 month history of our oil changes. Well, at first I thought this would be no problem. We have always gotten our regular oill changes so the receipts should be handy. Well, I didn't take into account that the destruction of our new orleans home by hurricane katrina. Our house was a total loss and so were those receipts. I think we managed to get our hands on two of them. Well, that's not good enough for vw. As a matter of fact, they won't even take hand-written receipts from the oil change places. I am extremely angry that they will not fix an existing problem with their vehicle without this information. They acknowledge the fact that it's the vehicle mechanisms but they refuse to fix it without copies of receipts I can never produce. All of new orleans was destroyed. Now, my wife, who has to commute 50 miles each way to work, has to drive her unsafe vehicle and endanger her life because vw refuses to fix a problem they admit their car has. We have no recourse but to file this complaint with the NHTSA.
The contact owns a 1999 Volkswagen Passat. The car has been t dealer, serviced as the original owner on a regular basis. The oil has been changed on schedule. The vehicle has 112,000 miles on it. The contact was informed on 9-30-05 that the engine needed an overhaul, and that it would cost in excess of $1000. 00 to replace the valve rings/o-rings). The contact was told that if this was not done oil would leak , and the car could catch on fire. The contact's daughter has a friend who told her that this was a known problem with the 1999 Passat. The contact called the manufacturer, and was told the warrant expired, and they could not do anything about it. Also she called bbb and filed a complaint against Volkswagen. .
The contact owns a 2001 Volkswagen Passat. While driving approximately 55 mph, the "stop vehicle do not drive", and oil pressure warning indicators illuminated on the instrument panel. The indicators remained illuminated until the engine was turned off. The vehicle was towed to an authorized dealer and they repaired the engine. The previous repair required the vehicle to remain at the dealer for one month. On three separate occasions, the vehicle was taken to an authorized dealer for identical failures, but there were no resolutions. In addition, during rainy weather conditions, five inches of water leaked onto the front passenger side floor panel. There was electrical failure due to the water leakage that caused gear component damage. Recently, the contact received a recall notice that consists of installation of a drainage filter and fuel system component repair. The vehicle has not been repaired for these malfunctions. The NHTSA campaign id number was unknown. The failure mileage was 36,000 and current mileage was 85,000.
2000 Passat -oil pressure light and a big stop light came on with no prior warnings or anything wrong. Immediately turned off. Waited about 1 hour then drove 1 mile home. Next day had it towed to dealership for diagnosis. Was told by vw mechanic he was not supposed to tell me but my engine was blown due to oil sludge in the engine which was a "known problem" with this year. Wanted $9500 to replace engine (only 52k miles) I still owed $7500 on the car. Replaced engine at another garage for $5400 then had to replace turbo for $2000. Oil is now leaking and they do not know what the problem is. Called vw. They said they would be glad to pay for a replacement engine if I could produce every oil change receipt. The garage where I got my oil changed only keeps records in the computer for 6 months then they are put in boxes in storage. Vw basically said "too bad". I have had 2 jettas and now this Passat. I will not buy another vw product. I had no problems with the jettas. If they have "known problems" why are they not recalls? vw could not answer this question.

On November 21, 2002, my 2001 vw jetta GLS 1. 8 turbo lost the oil drain plug on the highway. I stopped the car as soon as possible but the engine and turbo were damged severely and had to be replaced. Total cost $6,500. I was not reimbursed. I replaced the jetta with a 2003 vw Passat w8. On November 23, 2003 the oil was changed by the dealer and the dealer contends that the oil drain plug was tightened to factory specifications (20 nm), however the car had an oil leak coming from the drain plug. The dealer replaced the plug free of charge. Here is what is common to both situations: both drain plugs were tightened to at least the factory specification (I changed the oil and always used a torque wrench on the jetta) and both had drain plugs pull away from the pan. I do not know what the root cause was but I have a hypothesis on two important variables: (1) both pans are made of aluminum, which changes shape easily with temperature change, (2) the drain plug is manufactured in such a way that the washer (seal ring) cannot be removed and replaced. If the seal were warped or damaged in some way (perhaps overtorquing or dropping the plug) it might not seal properly. Would like for someone to contact me as Volkswagen has been less than helpful (especially with the jetta).

Upper control arms on both sides are worn out. Tie rods are worn out on both sides. Catalytic converters needed replaced. I paid for the tie rods, warranty covered converters, and I have not had the upper control arms replaced. Oil leaks on engine. Interior lights do not activate when drivers door is opened.
Oil leaking from valve cover seals, cylinder head and cam cover seals.
Head gaske leaking oil can cause slick freeways causing accidents. Lower control arm failure can cause sudden death of vehicle in motion.

Oil pan was designed without a protective cover, and has on two occasions became punctured, causing a major oil leak.
Oil line broke while driving. Also, abs/master cylinder malfunctioned, causing the entire abs system to be replaced. Vehicle was not braking properly when brakes were applied. In addition, had pads replaced twice/needed a new booster installed, and sun roof was replaced because it leaked and made a squealing noise.
Car is leaking oil. Attempted repair three times. Car was smoking from beneath passenger compartment.
The vehicle was found w/oil leak since 5000miles. 4 times was the vehicle brought to the dealer for service for oil leak. The car was brought to service last on 1/3/00. It is estimated on 2/20/00 the car will have the engine replaced, due to pin-hole in engine block. I have lost the use of the vehicle since 1/3/00.
Mechanic refuses to repair 2001 Passat electronic control system. The consumer stated the problem had been mis-diagnosed on more than one occasion. The vehicle had an oil hose leak.
2003 Volkswagen Passat with recall for faulty seal and heat shield. Consumer had the problem repaired and then received the recalls. He would like reimbursement for these repairs. The consumer stated there was a burning smell coming from the vehicle. The dealer discovered oil leaking from the valve cover and cleaned it. The sunroof tubes and drain plug were replaced.
Consumer noticed engine consumed and leaked an excessive amount of oil. While under warranty, dealer had inspected several times but couldn't find anything wrong. Now it's out warranty and they have a kit to fix the problem.
