6 Engine Shut Off Without Warning problem of the 2004 Volkswagen Passat

Failure Date: 03/08/2015

March 8 at approximately 10pm: on a trip back from out of town with my 2 young children and puppy, the rpms in the vw Passat began escalating yet no additional power was coming into the engine. I tried shifting to a lower gear and also attempted cruise control to minimize the rpm racing. Cruise control did not respond and the change in gear did nothing for the racing rpms. A few more miles down the highway the car began losing momentum -¿ it was similar to the feeling of running out of gas though I had a full tank. I moved the car into the service lane before the engine shut off. Within seconds of pulling over, the engine began smoking. I felt the need to get out of the vehicle, even though I was on the highway late at night, pregnant, with 2 small children and a puppy. We left everything in the car, got out (I called 911) and were about 8 feet away when flames became visible escaping from the hood of the vehicle. A state trooper was passing through at the time and noticed the strong smell; he quickly circled back and then saw the fire. Two fire trucks and 2 more state troopers arrived at the scene -¿¿ but by that point -¿¿ the entire front end of my car was in flames. The tires were so hot from the fire that they had melted to the road. The front end of the car was completely destroyed, the driver'¿¿s side window was blown out, and the dashboard melted. Everything in the car experienced chemical smoke damage and/or water damage from the fire trucks. The insurance company ¿¿totaled¿ the car this morning. Sunday night I noticed that NHTSA was at one point investigating vw Passat engine fires. I would encourage you to continue that investigation. Though my children and puppy were not physically injured (I don'tt know if they have suffered mental trauma) -¿¿ I am pregnant and do not know if the fumes will be toxic to my unborn child.

9 Engine Shut Off Without Warning problem of the 2000 Volkswagen Passat

Failure Date: 05/04/2014

I have had my 2000 vw Passat since 2006 and have had only regular wear and tear unitl about 3 weeks ago. I was driving on 95 in fort lauderdale, FL moving at about 65-70 mph when the engine shut off, power steering was gone and pushing brakes took all I had to try and safely steer and come to a complete stop crossing over 5 lanes of traffic to the break-down lane. Once I was completely stopped I was able to turn the key to the off position and restart the vehicle. Aside from the engine, steering and brakes all other functions were or at least seemed to still be working (dash lights, radio, windows) the vehicle did this 4 more times while I attempted to drive to the nearest exit and call for assistance. I tested all the fuses and they all were in working order and the next set of symptoms occurred a week later. I was trying to unlock the car with the remote and there was not connection being made between the key and the car, I manually unlocked the doors and put the key in the ignition. The engine didnt start or even attempt to turn over. All dash lights were on as well as the radio, however, I had lost the power windows, locks, trunk, gas lid and all interior light functions. I currently have the vehicle being looked at and hope to give an update when I find out the issue.

10 Engine Shut Off Without Warning problem of the 2012 Volkswagen Passat

Failure Date: 09/12/2013

I driving through my neighborhood when I got a flashing light on my dash, quickly the engine began to feel shaky and the vehicle shut off completely. I was able to pull to the side of the street but the car would no longer start. The car had to be towed to the closest vw dealership. The next day I received a call from the dealership telling me it was a high pressure fuel pump failure (hpfp) that caused the issue and that because a part had to be ordered and the work required was extensive, it would take them about a week. I did get my car in about 5 days and all repairs were covered under warranty. I asked the service manager how much the job would have cost without warranty and he said it was about a $5,700 job! it appalled me that he had no explanation for why the hpfp failed so early into the car's life. Needless to say, there is a sense of uneasiness that I have now wondering if this could happen again when the vehicle is no longer under warranty.

13 Engine Shut Off Without Warning problem of the 2003 Volkswagen Passat

14 Engine Shut Off Without Warning problem of the 2003 Volkswagen Passat

Failure Date: 05/01/2003

I purchased a new 2003 Volkswagen Passat from smith Volkswagen of wilmington, DE. From the beginning the car would intermittently experience total engine shutdown at mid-rpm while under full acceleration. This made any kind of merging into traffic maneuver a hazardous undertaking. The car was returned to the dealer several times for repair but with no success. This caused us for the entire time we owned the vehicle to completely modify the way we drove - never knowing when the engine would die out. Now after struggling with this for 3 years I receive recall notice "safety recall m7", one month after we traded in the Volkswagen on another car. This notice describes our problem but underplays the havoc the problem can actually cause when it occurs to your car. These vehicles are a danger to their drivers and to all the cars around them on the road. They should be removed from the highway until they are fixed now that Volkswagen has finally admitted something is wrong 3 years later.
