1 Engine Stall problem of the 2018 Volkswagen Passat

Failure Date: 01/24/2019

My father was heading home when he stopped the hill down from his house. Upon trying to accelerate he noticed the vehicle did not want to go. The engine had stalled/hesitated. He pressed the gas a few times and nothing happened, the rpm ha d was the only thing moving. Then, all of a sudden, the vehicle sped off and he lost control of the vehicle because this happened at the beginning of a curve and he couldn't regain control of the vehicle and slammed into a telephone pole which broke his neck and back. There is something wrong with these Passats. My brother and his wife have told me that their 2018 Passats do the same thing (hesitation/stalling).

On 10-20-16 at 6:00pm, vehicle engine stumbled and stalled without warning in middle of 6 lane freeway at rush hour. Travel speed at time of stall 40mph, adjacent exit lane was moving at 65 mph plus. Had to coast through traffic to emergency lane. Would not restart. Towed to dealer. Diagnosed as catastrophic high pressure fuel pump failure. Fuel diagnosis acceptable. Odometer reading 60,846 miles, powertrain warranty 60,000 miles. Serviced at dealer on 10-12-16 at 59,833 miles including fuel filter. Vwoa denied any warranty claim, later agreed to 50% of cost. I paid $2,843. 16 all services performed, fueled at local station all receipts kept. Failed pump part number03l-130-755-ab. Replaced with p/n 03l-130-851-hx.

5 Engine Stall problem of the 2013 Volkswagen Passat

Failure Date: 03/26/2015

Driving northerly on I-95 at highway speed going up the incline to the piscataqua river bridge (the border between new hampshire and maine), the vehicle lost forward power about halfway up the incline of the bridge approach. The engine did not stall at any time during or after the event. Driver was preoccupied with [1] turning on hazard flashers, [2] safely negotiating entry to the breakdown lane, and [3] not braking in an attempt to coast to the top of the bridge such that the car could coast down the far side of the bridge and allow exiting the highway at the nearby exit #1 in maine. The driver's preoccupation with safely addressing the power loss event did not allow him to scan any of the gauges or indicators on the front panel. Upon reaching the top of the bridge the car was coasting to a stop and the driver shifted between drive / sport / neutral to see if any power could be restored. Within 30 seconds or less the car again resumed forward motion in the drive shift setting. Car was driven to the nearby vw dealer where it was purchased. Service department checked (diesel) fuel quality which was good, and found no error codes when a scan was done. A vta case was opened and owner contacted vw customer care in auburn hills, mi. Subsequent testing at the same dealer's service department on 9 April 2015 also resulted in no findings for a cause. Vw recommends I continue driving it until the power loss occurs again. I asked what they would then do if no error codes were again found. They indicated they would ask me to lend them the car to drive until they can get the problem to reoccur. (= a no-cost lease back to vw!). Owners' opinion is that there is a design fault in the Volkswagen Passat engine/transmission pairing that is directly related to a deficiency of meaningful error sensors and fault / error code readout values during a power loss event. .

11 Engine Stall problem of the 2006 Volkswagen Passat

Failure Date: 06/12/2010

Symptom #1) car will not start or if it does start it will immediately stall and steering column will lock. After moving the steering wheel back and forth repeatedly, reopening the door several times and attempting to start the push ignition 5-10 times it will eventually start and run. Symptom #2) major safety issue! car will lose all power without warning at highway speeds. This defect causes the engine to stall immediately, the loss of power steering and the loss of all power controls at speeds at least up to 70 mph. There is no warning from the car itself. There is no stuttering or noise. Suddenly the car is just dead and rolling along at extreme speeds. The fix is to shift the car into neutral and attempt to restart by removing and reinserting the key until it starts again. The dashboard will light up "steering column defect" and prompt a warning light for the steering column as if it were locked from a car alarm prompt. Occasionally, I have been unable to restart the car while in motion and have had to pull off to the side of the road. This is done without the aid of power steering and can be very dangerous in traffic and at high speeds as there is no way of "knowing" when the defect will occur. This defect is occurring daily. I took the car into the dealer for diagnosis. Was told it was a defect in the steering column requiring a complete replacement. Estimated cost to myself was $1,000-2,000. Car is now out of warranty (58,000 miles). I believe this defect is not a result of any habit of myself as the driver but rather a defect in the workmanship of the vehicle and the dealer should be subject to a recall. A search on google about this issue revealed thousands of other drivers with the exact same problem (stall at highway speeds, loss of power steering, difficulty starting and restarting, possible stranding of the driver). I urge a recall to move forward immediately!.

12 Engine Stall problem of the 2002 Volkswagen Passat

Failure Date: 08/12/2008

Driving at 60 mph the engine completely stalled requiring an emergency maneuver to clear highway. Vw mechanic says rod snapped and put hole through engine. Not oil-related.

13 Engine Stall problem of the 2001 Volkswagen Passat

Failure Date: 07/01/2008

I was driving to my new employment when my 2001. 5 Passat lost power. The engine ran very rough and the idle was stable. The engine continued to stall and rendered the vehicle unusable. My Passat was taken to a garage near my place of employment and I was told the cylinder #4 has failed. I had the vehicle towed home (90 miles) to my local garage to be told the same. Cylinder #4 has no compression and the turbo has also failed as a result of the failing cylinder. I was told by vw that I need to replace the coil packs and spark plugs and the error should clear up. I had the mechanic replace the spark plugs and all four coil packs on the vehicle. After the repair the mechanic stated to me that the vehicle performance and issue was not fixed with the repair and the cylinder #4 was still down. I have been left without a vehicle now for almost two months while still having to make payments on a vehicle that I can not use.

The VIN was unavailable. The failure mileage was 80,000.

19 Engine Stall problem of the 1997 Volkswagen Passat

Failure Date: 03/20/1999

Engine intermittent stalling. Occurs during acceleration & steady speed. Hot or cold. No identifiable pattern. If car dies, it will start right up (most times it just surges & does not actually die). The surging motion can last between 15 & 45 secs. Has occured 4 previous times (thats prompted this complaint). Previous occurrences: 8/19/97 8,658 mi; 6/19/98 18,413 mi; 7/31/98 19,841 mi; 9/14/98 21,402. Completely frustrated and concerned dealer will bill me when I take the car in the 5th time to repair something that should have been fixed a year and a half ago.

20 Engine Stall problem of the 2000 Volkswagen Passat

The engine starts to stall when you accelerate at higher speeds. Every time taken to the dealer, he says the air filter is soaked w/water. He has no explaination. Finally admitted that there are "several" cars throughout the country w/this problem. His last solution (from vw) was to remove the snow grill (which makes no sense & did not correct the problem). It is terrifying to try & pass a car on a 2 lane road or in the middle of a 5 lane expressway & have your car start to stall . The airbag default light has also come on twice. Please help.
