1 Gas Recirculation Valve (egr Valve) problem of the 2014 Volkswagen Passat

Failure Date: 04/22/2024

Emissions system on engine has premature failures following the tdi scandal modifications, causing the coolant system to fail prematurely. Have had 2 heater cores clogged in the past 3 years, resulting in egr failures, impacting emissions and potential engine overheats.

2 Gas Recirculation Valve (egr Valve) problem of the 2015 Volkswagen Passat

Failure Date: 03/20/2023

I have no heat on the passenger side of the vehicle from any of the vents. The windshield would ice up due to this. The drivers side works fine. This car does not have climatronic. It has manual controls. I have been told the heater core is clogging by my mechanic. This is a 2015. Vw extended the warranty for 2012-14 Passat tdi's with the ckra engine however this is a 2015 with the cvca tdi engine. Is there any extended coverage for this generation engine? I don't want this to develop into a larger issue with deficient egr cooling problems. The heater core in the 2015 is the same part number used in previous model years which are covered by the recall.

3 Gas Recirculation Valve (egr Valve) problem of the 2013 Volkswagen Passat

Failure Date: 10/13/2021

My car's engine performance weakened and it would not go past 40mph. Two loops appeared on the dashboard flashing, pulled over turned off car then started it again. Two loop icon on dash went away. Started driving again and car would not drive past 20mph and started making a weird loud noise. I was driving through patterson pass road (very dangerous and super narrow road to even consider pulling over in) pulled over again and parked my car and walked away from my car since that is too narrow to even consider waiting in the car. I called a towing company to have my car towed to vw dealership. I bought this car not even 2 years ago from vw with only 16k miles. Have done all maintenances on it and this is the second engine problem ive had in less than 2 years. The first problem was replacing the egr valve and now this.

4 Gas Recirculation Valve (egr Valve) problem of the 2013 Volkswagen Passat

Failure Date: 09/11/2020

The contact owns a 2013 Volkswagen Passat. The contact stated that while driving at various speeds, the vehicle decelerated inadvertently, failed to respond upon depressing the brake pedal, and lost motive power. Several unknown warning lights were illuminated. The contact was unable to pull to the side of the road. The vehicle failed to restart and was towed to the dealer, where the egr valve was replaced; however, the failure recurred. The vehicle was towed several times, to a second dealer, tracy Volkswagen (2605 auto plaza way, tracy, CA 95304), and an unknown turbocharger part, the fuel tank, and the battery were replaced; however, the failure persisted. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure was approximately 40,000.

5 Gas Recirculation Valve (egr Valve) problem of the 2014 Volkswagen Passat

Failure Date: 10/30/2019

This vehicle has experienced cooling system issues since 49000 miles. The car now has 122,500 miles. The heater core has been replaced 5 times, 2 radiators, egr cooler, intercooler, oil cooler, transmission cooler. These are all impacted with some sort of sludge. Vw had issued an extended warranty on the heater core addressed by TSB 80-15-04. After numerous conversation with vw and the dealer service department the parts other then the heater core that is covered under the TSB have been replaced at no cost to me except the inconvenience of the time involved to resolve these issues. Vw is claiming that these vehicles do not have an issue other than what the TSB addresses. I have since traded the car in on a 2015 Passat tdi that now appears to be experiencing the same issues. There isn't a TSB or extended warranty for the cooling system/heater on this model. I believe this to be a safety issue, not having the proper heating system could impair visibility in the winter.

6 Gas Recirculation Valve (egr Valve) problem of the 2010 Volkswagen Passat

Failure Date: 09/18/2019

Informed that timing chain broke spreading metal bits throughout turbo engine and engine needs to be replaced. Vw will cover timing chain installation but remainder of repair will be our responsibility. The car had 72,000 miles and under the 10yr/100,000 mile warranty. We believe that dealership should have informed us about the timing chain drive failure and advised us to replace before it disintegrated! the vehicle had been back and forth to the dealership three previous times because of the jerking of the issue so that should have been a clue to the service department. After a 10-day holiday where the car stayed in the driveway, when we started it a terrible noise occurred and we could not start it so it was towed to dealership. Fortunately, when the incident happened, we were not driving on a crowded, busy city street or the freeway. We have been loyal vw owners for 50+ years and used our local dealership for 21+ years. We just purchased a new car and it's not a vw. I will get in touch with our lawyer if the dealership will not cover all repairs and labor.

7 Gas Recirculation Valve (egr Valve) problem of the 2012 Volkswagen Passat

Failure Date: 02/05/2018

On my 2012 tdi when the weather gets cold ~ below 10 degrees fahrenheit the engine feels like it is misfiring. It usually starts fine, but it stumbles/misfired for the first mile or so. The car does not want to get up to speed, nor will it shift into the next gear, the engine will rev to 3000 rpm and more when cold, which is very bad for the engine. I will manually shift into the next gear and then it chugs and misfires and struggles to get up to speed.

8 Gas Recirculation Valve (egr Valve) problem of the 2009 Volkswagen Passat

Failure Date: 10/12/2017

Found out there was a timing chain issue with the vehicle where it jumped 22 degrees. After research have found on a number of forums that this is a widespread issue with this engine in both vw and Audi vehicles. Vw will not issue a recall, the claim is, due to it being too widespread and extremely expensive. Under most circumstances from what I have read, it causes catastrophic engine failure. Luckily, mine did not jump that far, but it still was an expensive repair that shouldn't have had to happen. Well now I have had $4200 in repairs made to my engine due to this issue and I think vw should have paid for it.

9 Gas Recirculation Valve (egr Valve) problem of the 2009 Volkswagen Passat

Failure Date: 12/26/2014

Initial failure occurred whike accelerating onto main thoroughfare. Vehicle lost all engine power and stalled out. Vehicle was send to vw dealer for repair where some warranty repairs were made as well as preventative maintentice that was advised. The car was returned as "repaired" and after driving home experienced the exact same failure while the car was idiling in the driveway. Car was returned again and experienced the same failure a second time while I was traveling on i275 in detroit. The car stalled out and I again lost all power. I was forced to the side of the road where the car then failed to start. I was forced to sit for three hours in 20 degree weather with a twice in 2 weeks repaired issue as my car was buried in snow on the interstate. This is a major safety hazard!.

10 Gas Recirculation Valve (egr Valve) problem of the 2013 Volkswagen Passat

Failure Date: 01/24/2014

I bought a 2013 Passat se may 16, 2013, it currently has 28,000 miles on it and I take very good care of it. 2 weeks ago I just started my trip to work (75 miles one way / 95% highway) when the glow plug indicator came on and I immediately lost most power. It was about 7 degrees f, I was able to limp it to a dealer, who, after contacting vw technician support determined my turbo was shot and needed to be replaced. The support tech said that they have seen this only a couple of times and it was the first incident seen at my dealership, he said the replacement was a larger turbo, pump, pipe, filters and everything. It took a week and a half to do the job most of the time was waiting for parts.

12 Gas Recirculation Valve (egr Valve) problem of the 2003 Volkswagen Passat

Failure Date: 06/08/2008

Driving on I-87 upstate NY around albany in the fast lane about 80 miles an hour the car completely lost power. We pulled over quickly to the grassy area between the highways. We heard a sound but it might have been from the road when we pulled off or a backfire? the car was completely dead. We called 911 and a sheriff arrived soon and told us how difficult it would be to get back on the highway with traffic going 90-95 miles an hour. We had to get into the fast lane. We drove a little on the grassy area to see if the car would work. With great difficult and tremendous fear we managed to get onto the highway. We were then able to drive to nyc without problems in the slower lanes. No lights or sounds came on to warn us of the loss of power. This happened about 6 weeks ago as we were approaching the williamsburg bridge in manhattan but going at a much slower speed. We pulled over and had to restart the car. We have had the recalls from vw but not a recent one that may have come out in may. It seems like it could be a fuel tank issue. I will be taking it back to vw in brooklyn in two weeks to have them look at it. They have told me that since I did come in and get all the recalls that it could not be that. I am afraid of this car and only have about 27,000 miles after 5 years. It is a 2003 Passat turbo wagon. It was a hot day on June 8th and when we turned on the car the temp out side light said 101 degrees.

13 Gas Recirculation Valve (egr Valve) problem of the 2007 Volkswagen Passat

Failure Date: 02/18/2008

My 2007 vw Passat wagon has 3 times on trips longer than 4 hours in 0 degree weather started chugging and shaking on the highway. Each time has been worse and lasted longer. The first time a call to a vw dealer said it was the gas cap and it would be ok. The second time a Subaru mechanic diagnosed misfiring and a bad coil so I took it to a vw dealer who said there was nothing they could find wrong to fix. The third time I was nearly stranded on a remote highway. I eventually got home to my private mechanic who agreed it was misfiring and a bad coil and will fix it.

14 Gas Recirculation Valve (egr Valve) problem of the 2001 Volkswagen Passat

Failure Date: 08/15/2007

I brought my vehicle for service on August 4, 2007, at vw dealership fairfax imports, in fairfax, va. At this time I informed mr. David deloatche, service advisor, that my coolant light (stop red light flashing) had come on and there seemed to be a leak as the fluid was not sustaining and rather spilling out. On August 4, 2007, I was charged $776. 99 for manifold of services including an injector flush, power steering flush, brake fluid flush, and coolant flush. The coolant bottle was replaced and I was assured that there was no engine flush needed. I was informed that there wasn't enough time to fix the temperature sensor and the car was safe for me to drive. As I left the parking lot on August 4, 2007, after my service at fairfax imports, the coolant light came on and the temperature sensor rose to 260 degrees. I called david deloatche immediately to inquire on the safety of my car. I was assured once again to ignore the coolant light and the temperature sensor, and that it is safe for me to turn on and use the air conditioning and that the car was completely safe for me to drive. My employer, ibm sent me for training to palisades, NY from August 5 to 12, 2007. On Wednesday, August 15, 2007, I was enroute to ibm office in bethesda, MD from fairfax, va. My engine blew out on highway 270 and I was placed in a dangerous situation. My safety was disregarded as my vehicle wasn't properly fixed, and I was abandoned on a major highway.

15 Gas Recirculation Valve (egr Valve) problem of the 2000 Volkswagen Passat

Failure Date: 02/03/2006

2000 Passat GLS 4-motion v6 has been regularly serviced. Oil changes every 3000 miles. At appx 65000 miles, with no warning, the car overheated while idling (it had been idling for less than 8 minutes, it was only 50 degrees outside, the coolant had been checked a few weeks previous at the car's last oil change). The temperature gauge in the dash maxed out and steam and smoke started issuing from under the hood. Turned the car off & let it cool for appx 20 minutes before opening hood. Checked coolant, it had completely boiled away. Replaced coolant, let car continue to cool for appx another 1. 5 hrs. Started car and drove it (slowly) to a garage specializing in european cars. (my regular mechanic. ) replaced the water pump and thermostat, both of which had stopped working. Vw recommends that the timing belt be replaced at 80000 miles. Mechanic told me that the timing belt looked significantly worn and that it should be replaced now for fear it might break before the regularly scheduled replacement. Replaced timing belt. Total cost of replacing water pump, thermostat and timing belt: $725. Due to excessive engine temperature from the water pump and thermostat failure, pistons and valves in engine now knock and engine is noisy, particularly when first started. Engine no longer seems to be as responsive, power wise, as it was previously. 65000 miles seems a bit young to be experiencing a water pump failure. The fact that the engine overheated so quickly and with no prior indication of an impending problem, and that this resulted in such stress to the engine leads me to believe that there may have been a design flaw involved. (have had water pumps go out in other cars, but never prior to 80000 miles, never in under 8 minutes and never with such dire results and high repair costs.

16 Gas Recirculation Valve (egr Valve) problem of the 1999 Volkswagen Passat

Failure Date: 02/07/2005

I am writing about engine failure regarding a 1999 Volkswagen Passat 1. 8t. I purchased the car in 2003 at 29,000 miles and the car currently has around 77,000. Volkswagen has an extended warranty that states (to some degree) that if the engine fails due to sludge and is under 80,000 miles the owner will be able to have their engine replaced, 'if' they have records of all oil changes (of not more than 5,000 miles). My complaint is this, I do not have all the records since one of the locations that I went to no longer has a record of oil changes due to a computer malfunction. Additionally, when I called Volkswagen's 'customer advocate' they indicated that the decision is really up to the area service manager who can arbitrarily decide to repair or not repair the vehicle. Thus, my complaint is that Volkswagen knows that their engine has a problem and will not fix it. I have asked to have them send me a copy of their warranty indicating this, but wanted to lodge a complaint against the company for the 1999 Volkswagen Passat 1. 8t with the hopes of an investigation into the engine and whether it is faulty. Thank you.

18 Gas Recirculation Valve (egr Valve) problem of the 1999 Volkswagen Passat

Failure Date: 05/09/2000

While driving about any speed then parking, turning off engine, and then trying to start the engine, it won't restart. With spark plugs and thermostat installed at factoury, the vehicle runs at 165 degree. When new spark plugs and thermostat were installed, the vehicle run at 190 degree. The owner says these items have been on recall.
