38 Horn Assembly problem of the 2013 Volkswagen Passat

Failure Date: 08/11/2018

We took our car in for service on 8/11/18 due to the air bag light coming on and steering wheel functions no longer working. The dealership confirmed the issue with the clockspring and stated that because our car was out of warranty that we would be responsible for repairs. We stated that this seems like an issue with defective equipment since the car is only 5 yrs old as well as a safety issue with the vehicle. We escalated the issue to the corporate customer service. The rep stated again that they would not cover the repairs because the car was past its warranty. We conducted our own research on recalls for this vehicle as there has been others (I. E. Air bag and adblue heater). We located the 2015 recall on the clock spring and discussed this with vw customer service as well. They refused to acknowledge our vehicle as one of the ones affected even though we are experiencing the same issues. We are concerned with this safety issue as we are not able to use the horn, the airbag is inoperable as well.

39 Horn Assembly problem of the 2015 Volkswagen Passat

Failure Date: 07/20/2018

At around 47,000 miles I began hearing a clicking noise when turning my steering wheel. After a day or two of this my airbag light came on. I lost function of my horn and found that out while traveling at highway speeds when some one was merging into my lane without checking to see if it was clear. I also lost all steering wheel mounted controls. I purchased the vehicle used about 27 days prior so I returned to the dealer and was informed I was responsible for the repairs. They did trouble shoot the issue and let me know that the clock spring was defective.

Failure Date: 07/03/2018

Brought the car for airbag sign-on on 07-14-2018. Peabody MA vw dealer said that clock spring need to be replaced for $731. Horn, button on the handle not functioning. It looks like vw trying Dodge the real issue on recall.

There was a noise like a overtightened spring from the steering column when turning at low speed. Right afterwards, the horn as well as steering wheel controls for audio and phone stopped working. 44 Horn Assembly problem of the 2013 Volkswagen Passat

Failure Date: 05/16/2018

I have the same issue as investigation rq 17-009. My clockspring was part of a recall with previous owner having the recall completed in 2017. Now the clockspring is broken once again. I contacted vw and they informed me the recall is closed and on me to fix or dealer I purchased the car through. This is a vw issue. I heard and felt the clock spring pop while making a hard turn a few days ago. Lost all hand controls, horn and airbag light. This is a serious safety issue with no airbag.

45 Horn Assembly problem of the 2013 Volkswagen Passat

Failure Date: 05/01/2018

Tl the contact owns a 2013 Volkswagen Passat. The contact stated that the horn was inoperable. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. Hilton head Volkswagen (137 auto mall blvd, hardyville, SC) and the manufacturer were notified of the failure. The contact indicated that the failure occurred after the vehicle was serviced per an unknown air bag recall. The failure mileage was 400.

46 Horn Assembly problem of the 2013 Volkswagen Passat

Failure Date: 04/13/2018

My vehicle was a part of the vehicles that had the clockspring recall. I took it to a vw dealership to have the recall fixed and exactly one year after they 'fixed' the clockspring, it ceased to work again. Now the airbag warning light is on, the horn does not work, and neither do any of the steering wheel controls. Vw refuses to fix the issue without a charge of upwards of $500, stating that because it is not apart of the initial recall it is not their responsibility.

47 Horn Assembly problem of the 2015 Volkswagen Passat

Failure Date: 04/05/2018

Tl the contact owns a 2015 Volkswagen Passat. The contact stated that the air bag indicator illuminated and remained lit. The contact also stated that the horn did not work. There were no warning indicators illuminated. The dealer was not called. The manufacturer was made aware of the failures and referred the contact to NHTSA. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The failure mileage was approximately 94,000.

48 Horn Assembly problem of the 2015 Volkswagen Passat

Failure Date: 03/01/2018

Around the 60,000 mile mark, the airbag light came on, and the horn, as well as the steering wheel controls, stopped working. Went to the dealership, where they figured it was the clockspring, which would cost nearly $700 to replace. Vw has prevously issued recalls for other models because of this very issue.

49 Horn Assembly problem of the 2014 Volkswagen Passat

Failure Date: 02/08/2018

In August of 2017, my airbag light came on and my horn stopped working. There was also a clicking sound when turning the steering wheel. I took the vehicle to Volkswagen and was informed that the clock spring had failed and needed to be replaced. After conducting some research, I found that other 2014 Passats had been recalled for the same exact issue. My VIN was not covered under the recall, and so I had to pay out of pocket for a new clock spring. I believe that the Volkswagen recall was not broad enough to cover all vehicles affected. I reported this to the NHTSA at the time of the incident. However, about 6 months later, my vehicle began having the same issues. I was informed that the second clock spring had failed and needed to be replaced. Because the part was new, Volkswagen covered the repairs. I did not report this second occurrence of clock spring failure at the time. I am reporting the re-occurrence of the clock spring failure now, as I still hope the initial recall will be expanded and that I will get refunded from replacing it the first time. I hope this additional information can help with any ongoing investigations. I am providing documentation of both instances of clock spring failure in my 2014 Passat.

50 Horn Assembly problem of the 2012 Volkswagen Passat

Failure Date: 02/08/2018

Clock spring failure after recall service was performed. 2-8-2018 - upon starting to drive when I turned the steering wheel I heard a scraping sound in the steering column and then the air bag light came on indicating air bag not working, all control switches on the steering wheel and horn was not working. I had the recall for the protective cover over the steering wheel clock spring installed at the vw dealer in March 2016. Vw dealer and the corporate customer service tell me the replacement of the clock spring is not a warranty issue since the recall was performed over 12 months ago. It's obvious to me that the cover recall fix was not the correct fix and possibly caused the problem I now have with the car. Since vw knew there was a re-design of the clock spring to correct a design flaw the cover recall should have been to automatically replace the clock spring with the improved design. I'm being told I'll have to pay $500 to make the repair which I find very unfair in light of the re-design for the part or the possibility the recall repair was not correct and may be the cause of the probelm now.

51 Horn Assembly problem of the 2012 Volkswagen Passat

Failure Date: 01/26/2018

In 2016 my clock spring broke and was replaced as part of the 2015 clock spring recall. In January 2018 my clock spring went out again. I currently have an airbag light on, the horn is not working, and all controls on the steering wheel do not work. The clock spring that was replaced as part of the recall has failed and vw refuses to pay for a replacement. Thank you.

52 Horn Assembly problem of the 2014 Volkswagen Passat

Failure Date: 01/15/2018

Front driver airbag fault light in on, vehicle horn does not work, when turning steering wheel there is clicking sound. This is similar to recall number 1v483000 dated 08/04/2015 but my vehicle is not on recall list.

53 Horn Assembly problem of the 2012 Volkswagen Passat

Failure Date: 01/15/2018

In March of 2016 our clock spring was replaced due to a NHTSA mandated recall. In October of 2017 our airbag was replaced in the takata recall. In January of 2018 the horn started malfunctioning while turning the steering wheel and at times while going straight. This occurred while we were traveling out of town. Fuse was pulled and then replaced by dealer when brought in for service. Couldn't duplicate issue. Same issue occurred end of April. Brought in for service and they informed us the clock spring was broken. It was not under warranty and would be $741 to fix. We declined. We feel this should be covered since a recalled replacement part has failed again in less than two years.

54 Horn Assembly problem of the 2013 Volkswagen Passat

Failure Date: 01/07/2018

A 2013 Volkswagen Passat, on January 7the airbag warning light came on and "error: airbag" warning was displayed. The horn no longer works and the buttons around the steering wheel are inoperable. The vehicle was taken to vw in findlay, OH where it was diagnosed that the takaka airbag recall was in effect for this vehicle and that recalled part was replaced. However the steering wheel makes a clicking noise when it is turned, the buttons around the steering wheel are still not working and the airbag warning light and "error:airbag" warning is still on.

55 Horn Assembly problem of the 2012 Volkswagen Passat

Failure Date: 01/02/2018

My airbag light came on and the horn stopped working as well as the buttons on the steering wheel. Took my car to the dealership for 2 recalls and they said the problem is with my clock spring. One of the recalls they are doing replaces the clock spring cover. They quoted me a new clock spring for ~$500. They are replaced the clock spring cover for a clock spring that is defective.

56 Horn Assembly problem of the 2010 Volkswagen Passat

Failure Date: 12/01/2017

The contact owns a 2010 Volkswagen Passat. When the steering wheel was turned, the horn inadvertently sounded. The vehicle had to be turned off and restarted to disengage the horn. The contact stated that the failure began after the vehicle was serviced on January 25, 2016 for NHTSA campaign number: 15v483000 (air bags). The vehicle was not taken back to the dealer (Audi boise, 8400 west franklin road boise, idaho 83709, (208) 377-5400) for diagnostic testing or repairs; however, the contact removed the horn relay. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 52,000.

57 Horn Assembly problem of the 2014 Volkswagen Passat

Failure Date: 11/18/2017

I have a 2014 vw Passat-car went in for a recall for airbags. (vw is saying that it is not takata recall) at the time my car was taken in, there were no problems with it. Had the recall completed and maybe weeks later my clock spring goes out (took a right turn, heard a click, and the "seatbelt airbag malfunction" light turned on) all the controls on my steering wheel go out, including the horn. I take it it to vw in scottsdale shortly after this happened and they told me that it is not related, not covered, and that my car was not part of the takata recall . . (on their website it states 2012-2014 Passat included in the reacall) the service manager I spoke with said that he has never heard of the clock spring going out on its own. Little fishy how nothing is wrong with my car, I get the recall done, and weeks after my clock spring goes out (which is related to the airbag!) and told me it would be about $875 to fix! my car has only 58,000 miles on it.

58 Horn Assembly problem of the 2012 Volkswagen Passat

Failure Date: 09/25/2017

Clock spring on my vehicle broke for a second time disabling my horn and steering wheel controls. My airbag light is also on. Not only is this a costly fix, but my safety is in jeopardy again due to a part that is widely known to be defective for years. For some reason my car is not included in this voluntary recall and it is very upsetting. Please include this VIN in your recall or even the defective replacements. I don't want to die over a car part.

59 Horn Assembly problem of the 2014 Volkswagen Passat

Failure Date: 08/15/2017

The contact owns a 2014 Volkswagen Passat. Upon starting the vehicle, the air bag indicator illuminated and the horn failed to sound. On other occasions, the steering wheel clicked when turned. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic where it was diagnosed that the clock spring failed and needed to be replaced. The vehicle was also taken to savannah Volkswagen (50 eisenhower dr, savannah, GA 31406) where the diagnosis was confirmed. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure and stated that the VIN was not included in NHTSA campaign number: 15v483000 (air bags). The approximate failure mileage was 50,000.

60 Horn Assembly problem of the 2015 Volkswagen Passat

Failure Date: 08/09/2017

I was in my drive way and started my car when the air bag malfunction light came on in my car. At that point the horn, cruise control, phone, and radio functions all stopped working on my steering wheel. I looked in my owner manual and it said to call the dealership immediately. When I called - the vw dealership I normally go to said it would be 2-3 weeks before they could get me in. I asked if the vehicle was safe to drive and they, of course, would not tell me "yes or no. " only to find out later that the entire time I was driving with this light on - my airbags would not have deployed if I were in an accident. I have 2 children and if we were in a wreck and me or one of my children were injured due to my airbags not working -- vw would have a lawsuit on their hands. It is a matter of time before this occurs. So,I took my vehicle to an authorized vw dealership. After running a diagnostic on the car - I was told that the steering wheel clock spring was faulty. I left the car to be repaired. While I was without my vehicle (one week due to having to order parts, etc. ) I researched the issue. I was excited to see that vw had issued a recall in Aug. 2015 for the steering wheel clock spring. Unfortunately, it is only for 2010-2014 Passat. My Passat is considered a 2015; however, the production date is Dec. 2014. I was told at the dealership that I would have to pay for this repair out of pocket because my car was not covered under the recall. I contacted vw care center and even emailed several managers from the corporate location. My emails were never answered and the customer care center said there was nothing they could do. I am left with paying over $500 in repairs and almost $200 for the rental car I had to get for the 7 days my car was at the dealership. I would like to know why my car is not covered under the recall when it has the exact same issues.

61 Horn Assembly problem of the 2012 Volkswagen Passat

Failure Date: 08/01/2017

Takata recall. 2017 had airbag recall completed, no issues prior to recall. After recall, horn sounds while driving and while vehicle is running, and can't be shut off. Dealership refuses to fix, identifies as new problem. Changed clock spring to fix horn issue for $500, horn now intermittently sounds while driving, steering wheel controls, and cruise controls no longer work.

62 Horn Assembly problem of the 2015 Volkswagen Passat

Failure Date: 07/20/2017

Air bag error message and light illuminates. The steering wheel makes a cracking sound while turning in either direction. Also the buttons on the steering wheel do not work to include the horn.

63 Horn Assembly problem of the 2013 Volkswagen Passat

Failure Date: 07/05/2017

The repaired clock spring failed again per dealer. So the air bag doesn't work and neither does the horn or any other steering wheel controls. She was driving and turned the steering wheel and heard a pop !.

64 Horn Assembly problem of the 2014 Volkswagen Passat

Failure Date: 07/05/2017

2014 Volkswagen Passat was diagnosed with failure of the steering wheel clock spring resulting in loss of function for airbag, horn, and steering wheel control buttons. Airbag light was illuminated, and horn/buttons did not work. I took the vehicle in for repair right away. My VIN was not included in the existing recall (vw 69l2, NHTSA 15v-483) even though my issue appeared to be exactly the same concerns and symptoms as described in the existing recall notice. The current recall includes 2014 Volkswagen Passat cars manufactured in the us, but my vehicle was excluded. I had the vehicle repaired at a Volkswagen dealership (momentum Volkswagen of jersey village, houston, TX) at my cost of $544. 01. Date of repair was 05-Jul-2017, vehicle mileage 80200.

65 Horn Assembly problem of the 2012 Volkswagen Passat

Failure Date: 06/06/2017

Air bag light indicator light on on dash. No horn, clock or steering wheel controls working; maybe air bag not working. Steering column control module needed to be replaced, along with clock spring. Winter/spring 2017.

66 Horn Assembly problem of the 2013 Volkswagen Passat

Failure Date: 05/15/2017

Takata recall - I'm placing myself in debt due to the repairs for a car that isn't that old. I'm having electrical problems, steering wheel and brake issues. This company has numerous issues, recalls and legal issues with their cars. I din't sign-up to pay all this money out of pocket, and the airbag recall still isn't available. They were supposed to fix the steering wheel recall, and now my horn doesn't work or any controls on the steering unit. Now how much more money do I have to put into this car? I'm going to notify the better business bureau. I expect certain expenses, but this is a bit much and unfair to the consumer to incur more debt than anticipated. I have obligations and I have to be at work and can't afford to be off due to all these mechanical issues. Especially when the consumer is paying a car note and the car was never reported in an accident. What do you propose I do at this point?.

67 Horn Assembly problem of the 2014 Volkswagen Passat

Failure Date: 05/15/2017

The contact owns a 2014 Volkswagen Passat. While driving 55 mph, the horn failed to work and the air bag warning indicator illuminated. The vehicle was taken to the local dealer (bob penkhus Volvo Mazda Volkswagen; 1101 motor city dr, colorado springs, CO 80905; (719) 473-4100) where it was diagnosed that the air bag clock spring needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The contact received notification of NHTSA campaign number: 16v078000 (air bags). The part to do the repair was unavailable. The contact stated that the manufacturer exceeded a reasonable amount of time for the recall repair. The manufacturer was contacted at 800-822-8987 and stated that the vehicle was not included in the recall and the contact had to pay for the repair. The failure mileage was 70,000.

68 Horn Assembly problem of the 2012 Volkswagen Passat

Failure Date: 05/10/2017

I had taken my car to get the spring wire replaced back when the recall came out. I wasnt having any trouble with it then. They fixed it with what I assume was a faulty spring wire. So now all my components on my steering wheel do not work, my horn does not work and my airbag light is on with it reading airbag error. I have looked it up and it says faulty spring wire, which is weird because I thought they replaced it with a good part and now because ive already gotten the recal done they wont do it again under recall.

69 Horn Assembly problem of the 2013 Volkswagen Passat

Failure Date: 05/05/2017

Takata recall after having my air bags replaced on 5/5/2017 I discovered my horn will not function. When I called the dealership who installed the replacement takata airbag they told me I would be charged for the repair. I told them they failed in their air bag replacement repair work. I did not make an appointment. So now my car is unsafe as I do not have a horn. The Volkswagen dealership is Volkswagen of murrieta, 41300 date street, murrieta, CA 92562, 951-894-6555.

70 Horn Assembly problem of the 2013 Volkswagen Passat

Failure Date: 12/16/2016

Clock spring recall. Was fixed in 2016 but is again broken and vw refuses to reimburse the dealer or cover the cost of the repair. Due to this recalled part not being repaired properly, my airbag light is on, I do not have a horn, cruise control, not have the ability to use my steering wheel controls. This, I feel is also relevant to the airbag recall. I cannot sell my car with this issue, nor do I have the $ to fix it. It is dangerous to drive it, as it already has an airbag not working, the airbag light on and no horn. I have contacted both the dealership and vw and they refuse to cover the cost of this recalled part.
